The food disappoints me. Even though I think they have quality meats, the over-seasoning of items like the HAMBURGER and CHEESTEAK sandwichs are so inundated with other ingredients that the quality of meat the flavor is totally lost. If that wasn't enough, the seasonings do not seem to pair well. IMO, simple salt and pepper is all that's necessary. What a waste of quality product. read more

In a previous incarnation, the river grill was a dive bar. Now you're as likely to rub elbows with a NYC stock broker as their mailman or lawn person. They have an excellent tap rotation of local &/or craft beers & do a mean martini as well. The sandwiches and appies are my favorites (the spicy chicken tacos is enough for dinner & the nachos can feed 4 as an appy easy). Live music is typically later in the week after 10 and parents bring their kids just as the happy hour crowd leave. Yes this is my favorite pub in the area. read more

DO NOT waste your time and money going here! We are Chatham residents and thought we would give another local place a try. We will never be back. It was SO disappointing. My husband, daughter and I were treated so bad. Service is awful. The manager yelled at us multiple times. I think her name was Addie. When we addressed it she was extremely defensive and rude in front of our 11 year old daughter. She was mocking us as we were asking questions about the menu. Just disgusting. I will never give them business. We left and went to Charley's Aunt and they are so amazing, helpful and kind! The food at Charley's Aunt is so good as well as the atmosphere. Industrial-park roadhouse with 16+2 taps, big bar, tiny dining room, a dozen TVs, food that's miles above pub grub, fast brusque service, fair prices and (unfortunately) factory-grade sound levels. So you'll eat and drink very well at the River Grille, maybe watch 7 games simultaneously lol, but adult conversation is physically impossible. What? Is this a dive bar? Can you hear me? No it's not a dive bar. What?? Right, what's on tap, this is important -- and what's that plus 2 :). The 16 beer taps included industrial cheap beers like Coors light, Corona light, PBR and Yuengling; macro brews Stella, Guinness and Blue Moon; also craft IPAs Carton 077XX, Dogfish Head 60 minute, Founder's and Lagunitas. Plus+ 2 bonus taps, one with mojitos, how often do you see that, another pouring hard lemonade. Unfortunately our (very punk and not very young) server didn't know her beers so we kinda ordered randomly. We succumbed to the power of Yelp suggestions and ordered the mac-n-cheese app. That $11 big ramekin was far meatier than I expected cos loaded with ham and such, and much less cheesy. Definitely stuffed with mushrooms so if you're not a 'shroom fan you might not enjoy. Arrived with an excellent crust from the oven but dude, this is a meal in itself -- if you get this app alone you're done. Also tried the potato skins - deeply charred outsides were a turn off at first, then I started to appreciate the flavor, quantity of potato and proper texture - so I recommend. Altho at $9 for 3 big skins it's awkward to split among 4 people yet somehow we managed. Those app prices sound scary, right? But pints were only $6 or $7; a cheddar burger was $12 and sammiches were about $15, that seemed very reasonable. So $$ (two dollars) is about right, yet you can blow $25 plus on an entree if you like and cross into $$$ territory if you're thirsty. Don't miss the fries here, they're the battered Belgian-style potato kind, fried perfectly and nicely salted, plus a sprinkle of some herbs on top, highly recommend. Vegetarian rating: 1.5 stars bcos the choices are so limited: apps like quesadillas; several salads; only entree is a veggie burger; some sides like the fries might let you cobble together a meal. Too bad, I bet this chef could really rock the veg with one hand behind his back. Has a few tables out front. That seems like the best option - good beer, great food, only the volume of trucks going past -- a lot quieter than inside haha. We ate here on Friday. Came for an early dinner. Impossible to get a spot at the bar during happy hour, so we ate at a bar table. Decor is more like a dive bar, but the food is eclectic. My bf ordered a burger, which was perfectly cooked and amazing. The fries are yummy and very crisp. I had the pulled chicken tacos with homemade tortilla shells with lots of fresh tomatoes and lettuce, as well as salsa, quacamole, and sour cream. Very good and very fresh. Nice beer and wine selection. Good service. Can't wait to try other food options. read more

This place is always packed at lunch time on a Friday. Sure, it's a bar and grill, but the food is much better than you would expect. However, the prices could be a little bit better foodwise. My favorite bar with some of the best food in the area! The white truffle mac and cheese is to die for!!! The wings are meaty and they have a bunch of sauce options, which I love. The calamari is always cooked to perfection and comes with a few dipping sauce so you don't get bored. One star is doing this restaurant a favor. My experience here was disastrous due to the hostess with the Red hair. I witnessed her rudely disrespect a party of 5 who had been waiting for a table for over an hour. The waitress seemed distressed and unfit for the service industry on what seemed to be a quite slow night. I hope this hostess actions are not indicative of the culture amongst staff at River Grille. I will certainly not being going back and will make sure to tell all my friends, coworkers, and family about the disrepect I experienced and witnessed here from the hostess with the red hair. I write this review with great hesitation. I fear that by giving the review that it deserves will draw more attention to this little gem and leave me without a table when I want one. My husband met one of the owners, Peter, about a year ago. We have been meaning to stop by and just never did until tonight. This is by far one of the best pub menus that I have ever seen. The variety is wonderful, there is something for everyone. The choice of salads is incredible and it is not just the same old salad, they are interesting and delicious. The burgers are delicious, sweet potato fries are wonderful ($2 up charge) and the spinach and Gorgonzola salad was out of this world. Our server, Frank, was attentive, polite, friendly and informative. The wine list, while short, is very nice. There is a good bar crowd and the obligatory flat screens with sports playing but the upper level offers a nice, quiet section for a wonderful meal. Without a doubt, we will be back. Solid place! I recall it as a dive bar years ago (yes, back when upscale Chatham still could support one-anyone older than 15 could get served), but the new owners have totally redone it. Our waitress told me one of the owners is the chef, and it shows. A good test is simple food, and my burger was perfectly cooked rare, the bacon strips crispy and in a lattice on top of the patty, and the other condiments fresh and tasty. We had errands to run, so we didn't try any of the craft beers-but the unsweetened iced tea was the best I've ever had, including what I make myself. Our waitress was terrific, lots of off street parking-and a rooster outside within earshot from a neighbors coop. While it wasn't cheap at $14.95, it came with a big pile of excellent fresh cut fries, and at 10oz I saved half the burger for dinner so it made almost two meals. read more

Its been in my yelp bookmarks for awhile so my bf and i finally went for dinner one sunday night. The place is a little smelly i guess i have a sensitive nose and it is a dive bar so idk what i expected. We were seated immediately in the back room area instead of the bar. The waitresses were very kind and helpful. We ordered the spinach salad to share as an appetizer and the kitchen split it into two plates for us which i thought was really nice. Especially since we didnt ask them to. The salad itself is one of the better salads ive had at a restaurant. Definitely surprising how a crusty dark bar could have a bright and fresh salad :) For our entrees my bf ordered the french dip which is HUGE and looked great but i didnt get a bite. French fries were very crispy but soft inside, the perfect composition. I ordered a chicken quesadilla to eat as my main entree. It was really yummy, a little bit of spice and nice pieces of white meat chicken. Came with guac, salsa, and sourcream on the side. The portions are massive here and i ended up taking half my quesadilla home. This place has really great bar food, but i'm not a huge fan of the atmosphere (just personally not my thing). A coworker's band was playing here, so I dragged The Man out and figured we'd grab dinner before the music started. The restaurant is located in the middle of a somewhat shady-looking area (as shady as you can get around here, anyway), and I almost missed the driveway leading to the small parking lot around back. The lot was tiny, and to exit, you drive around the back of the building next door and down a very narrow alleyway. Definitely not something you'd want to do when a few beers in! The restaurant itself was clean, but small since it appeared to be a converted house. The bar area is downstairs with the dining area upstairs. It was a Friday night and quite busy when we walked in around 8 o'clock. There was no host/ess station, so we kind of wandered aimlessly through the bar until we found someone who told us to go up the stairs and put our name on the list to be seated. Since it was first-come, first-serve it didn't take too long for them to get us a table. The service wasn't super, but the server didn't screw up our order and we didn't have to wait too long for it - just not a lot of interaction and it took longer than normal to get our order taken. A nice couple seated next to us actually gave us recommendations on what to get. I opted for the spring rolls and a salad since I wasn't very hungry, while The Man got the French Dip. Great choices, IMO. The sandwich was sizeable, the meat was tender, and the au juis was delicious. My spring rolls were lovely - crispy outside, the perfect amount of filling so things didn't keep falling out as I was trying to eat, and very flavorful. My salad was, well, a salad. Pricewise, it was quite reasonable considering how much food comes on the plate. I've heard that they've had some issues keeping beers on tap, but since The Man only had one and it came without issue, I can't really complain. The food here is definitely worth coming back for, but I would most likely do it during the week to avoid the weekend rush. read more

Good portion. The waitress was very pleasant and tentative. I ate the chicken ranch sandwich which was decent size with a good portion of fries. My uncle ordered the ten ounce burger and also came with fries. The burger was too big for him so he only ate half of it and took the rest home. My aunt ordered the spicy chicken tacos as an appetizer but they gave you 3 tacos with regular size taco shells. I would definitely go there again and try something else next time. I travel often for business and I am always looking for a fun, "diamond in the rough" place to eat. I have been to the River Grille twice now on two different trips and I love this place!! So much so, that the second time I brought my GF and here's what she said about it. "Have you ever watched Guy Fieri's Triple D food show? Well we went to a place last night that could definitely be featured on his show. From the outside you would miss it for sure. Go inside and it just looks like a bar-ish grill. Order the 3 cheese, bacon, mushroom and ham Mac n cheese and let your taste buds have a party!!! We had to order more and more food because each item was sooooo amazing and unexpected!" The Town Tavern had a special place in our hearts so when we heard a new team came in to improve upon someplace we already enjoyed we were excited. Same basic layout of the Town Tavern, although I think someone may have done a little more design work. Food was good. We split a mac and cheese app, tasty but a bit on the oily side. Our waitress was pretty good too. She brought us bread and took our orders very quickly. A nice attention to detail was how our Woodchuck Ciders were served in official Vermont Woodchuck Cider glasses. I really love when a bar does that. So I went here mid-day after a doctors appointment where they took blood, and I hadn't eaten yet, so I didn't want to drink. The soda I ordered was way too sweet- bad mix on the syrup. I ordered a burger and wings, but the fryer was down, so I just got a burger. I went big boy, which is sautéed onion and bbq sauce. The burger was huge (big boy) but the bun was made for a little boy. Also, the bun was super hot. Combined with the excessive amount of sloppy onions, it was impossible to pick up and eat this burger with my hands. First burger maybe ever I had to eat with a fork and knife. Meat had no seasoning, bbq sauce was terrible. This was one of the worst burgers I've ever tasted... and its priced at almost $15! My very cute waitress offered soup or coleslaw instead of fries. I went coleslaw, and had 1 bite of the worst coleslaw on the planet. So that's the meal- flat soda, no fryer, sloppy/tasteless burger and dumpster coleslaw. Awesome. read more

I've had good experiences with River Grille in the past, but the last time I visited with a group of friends left a really sour taste in my mouth and I'm not sure I'll go there again. We were a large group, and we found a table on the front porch with enough room, but we were told that they don't serve food outside (for some reason) and that we'd have to wait for a table inside. Despite this, people sitting at the table outside next to us got food served to them. After waiting a long time with no timeframe as to when we would be seated, we continually asked the staff for a real timeframe until finally a waitress very rudely told us that we had no choice but to wait, and that the other table that got food outside shouldn't have gotten it to begin with, and she grumbled about how she was getting yelled at by other customers so she didn't want any more arguments (sorry miss, but that's your problem, not mine). After waiting 45 minutes to an hour with no ETA as to when we'd be seated inside, we finally gave up and went to the diner. It's a shame, because I usually enjoy the River Grille, but this was just awful and the way the waitress treated us was completely unreasonable. read more

Omg so surprisedand thrilled... Think great neighborhood bar/atmosphere crossed with amazing food and you have River grille! The mussels... oh where do I start? Soo delish tender fresh with the most amazing sauce and garlic toast for sopping up all that goodness. We could have stopped there but we didn't! Hunny had baked mostaccoli so delish. This is one of my wife and I's favorite places in the area. It is a very relaxed atmosphere and feels like the friendly neighborhood tavern. They have a great draft beer selection and the food is delicious. I recommend the burger sliders that are very juicy, the bbq chicken sliders and French dip are also great. You really can't go wrong.
