    The entrance to Ritchie's.

While down in Myrtle Beach, SC visiting the family, we took a trip to the town of Loris to have some early dinner at Ritchie's General Store and Eatery. They had read about them in some recent guide and I'm always interested in trying out new places if people are willing to make the trek. As the crow flies, the town of Loris is a little over a 35 minute drive from their part of Myrtle Beach and off we went. Ritchie's is a very nice looking place with the food counter and general store aspect to one side and a sizable dining room on the opposite side in a different room. There are a lot of options but they were looking into the Meat Loaf and I always love an order of that so was game. Essentially you ask the server behind the counter what you'll have and they put it on the plate for you. So a buffet but not really a buffet. There are numerous ways one can order depending on how many sides you wanted or didn't want. I had the meat loaf with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. They also gave a piece of cornbread. The dining room was empty except for us based on the time of day but it was a sizable one. It was very clean and bright and the staff we spoke to were all very friendly. There was a small town vibe to the place which made sense since this was indeed a small town. Being a city guy from NYC I don't get to enjoy that vibe all that much so it was a nice change of pace. All in all I enjoyed my order. It was a filling meat loaf for sure and I left full and definitely in need of a lengthy walk afterwards. I recommend trying the place if you're in the region but based on my distance its highly unlikely that I will be back there. Of course that's not in stone so maybe. Either way nice work Team Ritchie's.

    Shrimp and Grits!

Absolutely blown away by how delicious the shrimp and grits is. Pretty pricey, but wow if you want legit southern cooking that'll have you feeling good this is it. Right on Main Street in loris it's easy enough to get to. Lots of different items on the menu to pick and try as well. This place is a diamond in Loris.

Pot roast, rice and gravy, Mac and cheese, with corn bread.

Good hometown food. The grill cheese sandwich was delicious. Don't forget to try the chicken bog.

Very friendly staff , I am in town for work and had 3 different people tell me to go here for comfort food . Fried chicken on point Mash potato's were instant so that was my least favorite . Luckily I saw a packed place on Mr. Joe White Avenue called Simply Southern Smokehouse. Place looked legit and had a full parking lot so I pulled in. There is only one way in and once you get in, the cashier is on the right with the $15 all you can eat buffet right next to it. The $15 also included all you can drink soft drinks, water and sweet tea. I paid my money and grabbed a plate and ran right up to the buffet. They start out light with vegetables and sides, working up to the main courses of fried chicken, fried fish, pulled pork, smoked chicken and some hot wings. After that, they had some mac & cheese, and then the desserts which was blueberry cobbler, peach cobbler, homemade banana pudding...and a couple of other things. I started off with some broad beans, stewed okra and tomatoes, smoked chicken and hot wings. I brought my plate and my silverware to an empty table, which was getting hard to find as the place was so packed and then went up to fetch me a glass of water to wash it down with. They serve Pepsi products and of course sweet tea but I was going to save my calories for dessert. The place was clean, well lit and the seating was well designed with booths along the wall and tables in the center... and plenty of room between the tables. Once seated I dug right in. The broad beans were excellent. Done right and full of flavor. The stewed tomatoes and okra, although cook correctly was a bit bland for my liking. The smoked chicken was excellent and I used a bit of the golden SC BBQ sauce on it...great...and homemade. The hot wings were the real deal meaty and moist with a nice kick. I finished the plate in about five minutes. Time for round two. On my second trip up, I put some collard greens, lima beans, a piece of fried chicken and a piece of fried fish on the fresh plate. As I sat down to eat, I put a bit of hot vinegar sauce on the collard greens and dug in. The collards were excellent and the homemade vinegar hot sauce gave it a bit of a kick and bite. The Lima beans were soft and loaded with flavor. I then moved on to the fried chicken, which was cooked correctly with the skin crispy and well battered and the meat moist on the inside. That said, it was bland. Given how well the beans were seasoned I was surprised. Same thing with the fish, but they had a real good house sauce for it which gave it a nice flavor and saved it, but overall both the fried chicken and the fried fish were bland. I then went up for a plate number three and realized I was not gonna be able to eat anymore mains, which was a shame since the pulled pork looked great... It will have to wait for the next time I come. I did, however leave a bit of room for dessert and I'm glad I did . The banana pudding was delicious with a full banana taste and 'Nilla wafers on top and bottom adding a bit of crunch. I only had enough room for one of the cobbler so I chose peach and it did not disappoint. Nice and warm with a sweet peach flavor and tasty crumbles. I wanted more but controlled myself. As I got up to leave, I placed five dollars on the table for the cleanup guy who was hustling and keeping the place neat and tidy. I then looked around and noticed this was a real local spot full of people from Myrtle Beach. You have families, elderly people, young people, construction workers and people from local businesses. For $15 it cannot be beat. Not only will I be back again but I plan on bringing some of my friends from up north who are going to love this place...plus I gotta try that pulled pork and Mac and cheese...if the fried chicken and fish have more seasoning, I'll up them to 5 stars.

If you go in the front door there are a few steps to climb. If you need flat entrances they are around back. The host took us to our seats and explained the buffet to us. It is only a buffet place. But you can order a take out as well. There were two tables of food and a dessert table. The salad bar seemed to never end. Everything was cut fresh with no limp vegetables or lettuce. Marilyn brought me coffee and Bev Tea. It was plenty hot and fresh. I absolutely love their coffee. I had two cups before I even finished my plate of food. Marilyn was very attentive to each table and came to ours often. After I finished my salad. I saw Carie filling a plate for someone. When she was done I asked her if she could get me a chicken breast. My joint pain and back pain had been extreme this week. Using the walker was even painful. Carie said, "Absolutely !" She returned quickly and with a smile. The staff is so kind. The manager Tommy came by our table to see how we were enjoying our meal. I let him know the salad bar was perfect. The chicken I enjoyed was tender and juicy. I also noticed the teamwork between the staff was easy and natural like a choreographed dance. Bev and I plan to return for the Easter Sunday Meal. The staff was very friendly, the service was good...I had takeout but the restaurant is a buffet inside. It clearly is a place the locals enjoy and it is an easy stop if you are on the way to the beach. All in all, my favorite was actually the hot dog. The chili was excellent and the slaw had just a touch of sweetness. The BBQ was well prepared, just not my favorite style or taste profile...a bit too much twang. I would recommend Shuler's if you are in the area and look forward to trying other items the next time I return.

The place is a large wooden building that resembles something that would have been built in the 1870's. There are a few bench's and chairs on the front porch to relax in after eating or if you need to wait for a table. They have a general store with some interesting items as well. Schuler's is a buffet style barbecue and all you can eat. Their pulled pork is their best meat. I wasn't really impressed with their ribs though. Don't get me wrong, the were pretty good but I certainly wasn't blown away. Their fried chicken is good but again not much different from most buffets in South Carolina. Their collards are nice and they do offer hash. If you're thinking corn beef hash, it's not that. It's a BBQ or liver hash and it's definitely an acquired taste. I usually put it over rice if I get it. Hash was highly popular in South Carolina for many years. It can't hurt to try it as Schuler's is actually pretty good. Not my favorite barbecue in the area but it's cool place with great people.
