Food is always so good! Came down to spend the day in Hartsville/Darlington and went to this jewel that is in the middle of nowhere. The waitresses are always so kind. Sitting on the back deck you can see the lake, it is so nice. Always feel at home here. The sweet potato pie and the greens are the best!

Great atmosphere, clean, nice waitress, food was very good. You pay next door in the attached General Store on your way out.

I was on a 2 week vacation back to the Carolinas in September and made a few BBQ stops , 5 to be exact . I grew up in Bennettsville , S.C. , but now live in Las Vegas , Nevada . I have also lived in Texas so I an well versed in regional BBQ . For Pulled Pork it's got to be Carolina style . Las Vegas has exploded with BBQ places and I have tried most of them . They tend to be more Texas style which is great for Brisket and Hot Links . I was driving back to Charlotte for my plane that night , so I only had time to get a quick Pulled Pork Sandwich and Sweet Tea . I would have loved to do the buffet , but I had to hit the road . I have had friends post pictures on Facebook about this place that live in the Bennettsville / Marlboro County area , so I had to give it a try . The sandwich was good and the slaw on it made it perfect . I really liked the atmosphere and the general store . Great outdoor setting with rockers . The service was good and friendly . Now I have to do my ratings . I ate at 5 BBQ places on my 2 week trip home to the Carolinas in September and I have to give Number #1 to Smithfield's in Laurinburg , N.C, , but only by a small margin . Number #2 Scott's in Hemmingway was so tender and sauce with just the right kick Number #3 would be Shuler's which has a very nice facility and spot on sandwich . Number #4 would be Stanton's Fly In Barbecue and Fish Camp , which is in my hometown of Bennettsville , S.C. and has a runway for small planes and helicopters to land there , which is pretty cool . Number #5 Fat Buddies in Waynesville , N.C. which had a cool decor , but nothing special about the food .

Can't beat these prices! Very reasonable.

Another good vacation on the road lunch. Your Yelp reviews were plentiful and star-filled so we took another chance and it was all (mostly) good! The best bet is to go for the buffet and I did not see anyone not get it. Very reasonable at $9.50 a person which includes your drink and dessert. I'll start with dessert - banana pudding. Period. There are a few other choices but don't bother. So good. The buffet has about 20-30 items including rice, fried okra, corn on the cob, Mac and cheese, mild and regular pulled pork, fried chicken, green beans, coleslaw, and a bunch of other good things. The staff was quick in replacing and adding to the items that ran out. One thing that my wife did not realize in reading some reviews that that this is a vinegar-based bbq joint. When she tried her serving, it was a big no bueno. Kid and I liked it, though, but I do prefer the non-vinegar base better. As someone else mentioned, if vinegar is not your thing, don't come here. My wife says, "I've finally found a food I won't eat; vinegar based pulled pork." What was even better than the bbq was the fried chicken. Light batter and crunchy, and quickly devoured. Even got seconds of it. Green beans were awesome. Like a Cracker Barrel, this place makes you exit out a different door right into a 10' walkway to the "General Store." We detoured into the parking lot to continue our trip but a look through the door revealed a take-home bakery in addition to the tchotchkes. $32 for three buffets. Includes drink and dessert, but add your tip! Service was quick, efficient, and friendly.

So when we came to Myrtle Beach for our family vacation one of the things I really wanted to try was some great authentic whole hog Carolina BBQ. This is the place. I remember seeing Scott's come up on a few shows I had watched and I also saw Rodney on a few YouTube videos, so I was excited to try it out. There's a lot of history here. The staff here are all very welcoming and super friendly. The young women behind the counter were all very helpful. For food we went with the bbq plate, rib plate, and chicken plate. All of the meats were tender and delicious. In this region of Carolina the sauce is primarily a vinegar pepper sauce which I really enjoyed. The tables are set up in the perfect spot, right outside the hanger where they cook the meats... so all the delicious smells from the smoke and meats come wafting through. It's a great experience. My hats off to the staff and family for all their hard work and dedication to the craft. The foods delicious and made with love. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're looking for some great whole hog bbq. Thanks again!

Well today, 4 years later of saying that, we stopped. It's a small 'food truck' (but it doesn't move from this spot), and I believe the smoker in the front is where eveything is made. The smell is unmistakeable and you can take it to go or eat inside a covered area that has booths and even a pool table. They sell farm fresh eggs and other various produce, flavored honeys and bottle of bbq sauce. What we ordered.. 1/2 rack ribs - don't even know where to start with how tender, fall of the bone the ribs were, with a perfectly spicy bbq sauce 1/2 lb sliced brisket - this is their best seller and my lord, I entirely understand why 1/2 chicken - hubs loves chicken and this was like a mutant because it was gigantic and not overly smokey, but just right dipped in the rib sauce A small container of potato salad - had I known how truly delicious this was going to be, I'd definitely have gone bigger. Next time!! It was a tad sweet but balanced perfectly with relish. I have no problem traveling for quality.. this spot is about 1.5 hours away from Myrtle beach where we stay, and worth every minute of the drive. Best of all, I got to meet Mike!! He's a southern gentleman, a blast to chat with and I cant wait to go back. If you're traveling south on 95 through SC, it's a couple miles off the Bucees exit, I suggest you take the detour and give it a try!!!!

He was SO hospitable, sweet and genuinely welcoming. He gave great recommendations and did not steer us wrong. These days, it's not always easy to come across service like that, which made it even more appreciated. I ordered the Sunset Blush drink and it was delicious. We also got the cornbread and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the BEST cornbread I've ever had. So soft and flavorful. The brisket sandwich was a little dry (could be because we went during closing) but still had really good flavor. The mac and cheese though... WOW. I am very picky with mac and cheese and most places miss the mark, but this tasted homemade. Easily a 10/10. My husband got the peach bourbon burger and said it was great. The kids ate everything in sight which is always a win...lastly the cinnamon roll cheesecake for dessert... phenomenal!!! Overall such a great experience and I'm really glad we stopped in!

After driving 15 hours on March 21, 2026, my husband and I were genuinely excited to try this place and planned to take our food back to the hotel. Unfortunately, the experience started off poorly and never really recovered. First, parking is extremely limited out front, which is frustrating when you're tired and just want a quick pickup. Inside, things only got worse. The front-of-house staff was shockingly unprofessional. The employee helping us clearly didn't understand her job and had to be corrected multiple times by another staff member--something no customer should have to witness. It created confusion, delays, and zero confidence in our order. We paid about $50 for a sampler, which is not cheap, and yet the same employee argued about giving us the sides because she entered the order incorrectly. If another, more competent employee hadn't stepped in, I'm convinced it would have escalated further. Even then, we never received one of the four sides we paid for. To make matters worse, we were never asked if we wanted drinks to go, and we weren't given plates, silverware, or even BBQ sauce--basic essentials for a takeout order. That's just unacceptable. While waiting, we also watched this same employee tell three separate dine-in families to go sit and wait while she stood there rolling silverware. Completely rude and dismissive. If I had been one of those customers, I would have walked out. This is the first impression customers get, and it's a terrible reflection of how the place is run. Between the disorganization, poor communication, and outright unfriendly behavior, the service was a mess. The only reason this isn't a one-star review is because the food itself was actually very good. The burnt ends and ribs were the standout--absolutely delicious. But great BBQ can't fully make up for such a frustrating and poorly managed customer experience.

There's no polite way to say it: something fundamental has been lost at Old South BBQ…read more On a recent sunny afternoon, a friend and I--both barbecue enthusiasts--set out to try Old South after hearing it had reopened under new management. I had never been, but my friend spoke of it with near reverence, describing a once-legendary roadside joint steeped in South Carolina barbecue tradition. And that tradition matters. In South Carolina, barbecue isn't just food--it's history. Proper whole-hog or pulled pork is defined by slow cooking over hardwood coals--hickory or oak--for upwards of 8 to 12 hours. The state proudly claims all four major regional sauce styles, from the iconic mustard-based "Carolina Gold" to vinegar, light tomato, and heavy tomato sauces. It's a place where technique and patience are inseparable from authenticity. Old South still looks the part. The atmosphere is classic and charming: a casual, no-frills roadside spot with a nostalgic 1950s picnic scene, complete with indoor seating and outdoor tables. It's family-friendly, dog-friendly, and on the surface, exactly the kind of place you want to love. The menu hits all the expected notes--pulled pork, baby back ribs, chicken--and the house-made sauces are genuinely enjoyable. But then the food arrives. The wings, ribs, and pulled pork were all missing the one thing that defines barbecue: smoke. Not subtle smoke--none. It tasted as though everything had been cooked in a gas oven. Yes, the food was tender and even flavorful in places, but without that slow-smoked backbone, it feels hollow. If smoke isn't part of the process, can it really be called barbecue? Curious--and increasingly skeptical--we walked over to the smokehouse. It looked abandoned. No lingering wood aroma, no signs of recent use, not even a stray log in sight. When I asked our server about the pitmaster, she casually mentioned he usually comes in around 4 p.m.--a surprising detail, considering authentic barbecue is an all-day (and often all-night) process. At that point, the analogy felt unavoidable: if you put a Hyundai engine in a Porsche 911, is it still a Porsche? My friend and I left with the same conclusion--Old South BBQ may still carry the name and the look, but it's lost its soul. The bones of something great are still there, but without the craft and care that once defined it, it feels like a tribute rather than the real thing. To be fair, our server was friendly and attentive, and that effort didn't go unnoticed. But good service can't replace what's missing from the pit. For a place once remembered as a cornerstone of South Carolina barbecue, that's a tough rib to swallow.
