My family and I came in for lunch today. My wife and I are both BBQ enthusiasts and do a lot of smoking at home. So when we came to Myrtle Beach for our family vacation one of the things I really wanted to try was some great authentic whole hog Carolina BBQ. This is the place. I remember seeing Scott's come up on a few shows I had watched and I also saw Rodney on a few YouTube videos, so I was excited to try it out. There's a lot of history here. The staff here are all very welcoming and super friendly. The young women behind the counter were all very helpful. For food we went with the bbq plate, rib plate, and chicken plate. All of the meats were tender and delicious. In this region of Carolina the sauce is primarily a vinegar pepper sauce which I really enjoyed. The tables are set up in the perfect spot, right outside the hanger where they cook the meats... so all the delicious smells from the smoke and meats come wafting through. It's a great experience. My hats off to the staff and family for all their hard work and dedication to the craft. The foods delicious and made with love. Wow, where to start. We've watched countless YouTube documentaries, the Netflix special, and other food reviews on the original birthplace of Rodney. We've never made it a priority until recently to go out of our way one Friday to eat lunch at Scott's in Hemingway. I was absolutely blown away by the pork, beans, and potato salad. Loved the tangy BBQ sauce and the portions were huge! Only ding is they really need to invest a tiny bit of money on sprucing up a bit. I get the rustic and original nature of the place, but the flies are no joke and only place to eat is out in the lot (no screen) or in your car. Scott's Bar-B-Que has a an excellent reputation, and based on my experience yesterday, it is well-deserved. The restaurant is essentially a little store, but there are picnic tables outside. It is located outside of Hemingway, and it is worth the drive. I had a two meat plate of pulled pork and pork ribs. They were both outstanding. I also am a fan of the tangy vinegar sauce. (That was a completely new bbq sauce for me, and I am a fan!) I came in about 10 minutes before closing, and they had already put away the beans, which was a disappointment, because I like to judge a barbecue place also on its baked beans. However, the potato salad and coleslaw were quite good. I drove about 45 minutes out of the way to try Scott's Bar-B-Que, and I am very happy that I did. read more

Nice service, and absolutely delicious meat and sides. The potato salad was particularly delicious, but the beans are incredibly soft and unctuous as well! Made the trip to Hemingway for a new truck and stopped by Scott's a little late in the day... 2:30. No Ribs . BUT they had pulled pork and smoked chicken. I wasn't disappointed. The barbecue is good little on the spicy side, but nonetheless good. I was really disappointed in the staff. I told him this was my first time there they don't take any debit cards or credit cards cash only so I had planned to eat more but I only had enough cash for a sandwich. It happened to be a cold windy day, and the only place to eat is outside on a pork bench There are tables inside, but they are being used by employees for their breaks and they won't let you eat inside regardless of the weather conditions. So my dad and I took our food to the local gas station in a in their dining room. That was my first and last time to Scott's barbecue. read more

Scott's Bar-B-Que is award-winning, famous, and in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, my family and I were staying in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of a takeout/delivery-desert. Scott's is a little outside of downtown, and literally on the side of the road. I had read about the famous bar-b-que pits and I imagined I could glimpse them in the back, but who knows! The parking spots were pretty full but we squeezed into a questionable space. 3 older gentleman sat on a bench outside, chatting. A sign on the door said only 3 people at a time, but the owner let us in, as there was plenty of room to social distance inside. Waiting in line, I tried to read the signs and awards and articles hanging on the wall, and tried to identify the celebrities posing with the owners in the photo board by the order window. A basket of mini cucumbers and another of pecans sat next to some soda and chips for sale. I love seeing home grown stuff for sale. Truthfully, I couldn't understand the menu. Was a BBQ plate the BBQ sandwich plus sides? Or just BBQ with sides? FYI, the plate = sandwich plus sides. It also comes with BBQ sauce, so don't order that separately! They only take cash, and the woman who rang me up calculated the total with a calculator and a sheet of paper. Love it! The BBQ (pork) was insanely tender and definitely delicious. I was not a huge fan of the BBQ sauce, which is Carolina style- spicy and vinegary, but I ate the whole things anyways! The plate portion is huge! 1 plate could easily make 3 sandwiches. We took a BBQ road trip to Hemingway to check out the original location of Rodney Scott's bbQ joint. I've been a fan for decades. Following his rise to fame and eating my weight in delicious smoked pork! Rodney is a legend and has won accolades and international fame as a James Beard winner. It started here! Still the best BBQ in the Carolinas or for that matter in the Southeast. You can't really compare it to Texas, Memphis, or St. Louis BBQ because they are all different styles. I read a review that was posted four months ago by someone who complained the the BBQ was in four inch strands. Seriously? It's called "pulled pork" for a reason. I know that there are some places that make "chopped 'cue" especially in North Carolina but that stuff is just chopped mush. We were very excited to try this place so the disappointment was even more pronounced. We ordered a bunch of dishes and none of them were standouts except for the fried chicken sandwich. I am so grateful for Yelpers that posted recommendations of that sandwich because that was the only thing I finished. The other meats were not that tender and the sauces were nothing special. As you can see from the pictures I tried a bunch of different dishes but we would not up not finishing anything other than the chicken sandwich. A lot of people mentioned that the strong vinegar in the RS sauce was not very appetizing, but I know that is a signature of North Carolina BBQ. But that did not bother me as much as the lack of flavor and tenderness in meats themselves other than the chicken sandwich. read more

Traveling through SC and lucky to be around the area on a day it's open, not exactly on our way but we made it on our way. CASH ONLY. Got there early on a Wednesday and tried the chicken, ribs, pulled pork, and the 3 sides offered. That plate was hefty! My partner and I shared and still had leftovers. Couldn't believe how much food we got for the price. The chicken was great, the pulled pork was AMAZING, the ribs were my least favorite and they were still really good. The vinegar sauce is magical and I want to marry it. The sides were all meh and if I went back I wouldn't order any but the slaw. I have seen many videos and stories on Scott's BBQ . I grew up in Bennettsville , S.C. , but now live in Las Vegas , Nevada . I have also lived in Texas , so I am well versed in regional BBQ . For Pulled Pork , it's got to be Carolina BBQ . Las Vegas has exploded with lots of BBQ places , but most are Texas style , but they all do Pulled Pork . I have tried most of them . They do make good Brisket and Hot Links . As far as Scott's goes , I found the Pulled Pork to be very tender and the sauce is point on . I just got the sandwich since I was driving back to Charlotte that night to catch a plane , so I didn't have a lot of time to eat . The parking lot / road was full and I had to park a ways from the place . I ate mine in the car . The drive is something else . I was coming from Myrtle Beach , so it was a long detour . I ate at 4 BBQ places on my 2 week trip home to the Carolinas in September and I have to give Scott's #2 . Number #1 would be Smithfield's in Laurinburg , N.C, , but only by a small margin . Number #3 would be Shuler's in Latta , S.C. which has a very nice facility . Number #4 would be Stanton's Fly In Barbecue and Fish Camp , which is in my hometown of Bennettsville , S.C. and has a runway for small planes and helicopters to land there , which is pretty cool . read more

We always take the long way to Charleston so that we can grab lunch here on our way down! Stop and eat here, if you find yourself anywhere near it! When we went, they weren't seating anyone inside, so you had to either take your food to go or there were a few picnic tables out front. We opted to eat there. There aren't too many options (which is a good thing!), but you can't really go wrong. Normally we just always did the pork BBQ, but I switched up my order this time around and got their chicken. Wow! I'm SO glad that I did!! I think that I will always stick with the chicken not (but still get to eat some pulled pork that my hubby orders - almost like you can get a taste of it all!) We have been to his location in Charleston, but this one in Hemingway is just better somehow! No kidding...I think I can safely say that this is THE best BBQ I have ever had! After watching a show back a few years ago on UNC-tv ( NC's PBS station) called A Chef's Table - BBQ about Rodney Scott's BBQ - we couldn't wait to try it on our next visit to Charleston. Since then, we have visited the place every time we go to Charleston and hit RS BBQ as our pilgrimage! The ribs are absolutely amazing- they were smoky, flavorful & meaty. I am not a fan of the mushy, falling of the bone, tasteless ribs that I find too often at bbq joints. The quality of the meat here, combined with the master bbq skills of Mr. Scott and that killer spicy vinegar mop sauce is just heaven! Cooked in a smokehouse attached to the restaurant, the "whole hog bbq" is nothing like what you're used to. The whole hog is smoked very slowly over hardwood coals to a juicy & tender finish but the meat bites back! That's a good thing- like the difference between a factory farm chicken and a local one. Night and day!! Not to besmirch the other offerings like his pulled pork, brisket and smoked chicken wings as they are epically good, too! Oh... and our favorite sides - done so southern - the collards, hush puppies, cornbread and mac & cheese! Must haves along with all the above! Tip: we always go on a Sunday for lunch before we drive back to Asheville. This will be our only meal of the day! We order way too much, eat some and take the rest back home with us to enjoy for another day! After reading all the rave reviews about Scott's Bar-B-Que authenticity to the East North Carolina region and seeing Anthony Bourdain and Sean Brock praise the delicious whole hog on Parts Unknown, our expectations were SKY HIGH on the food .... but we left highly disappointed. First off, I've read numerous articles about Rodney Scott and I want to say that I respect his place in the BBQ community. I respect that there are many BBQ purists who bow down to his skillset, work ethic and ability to cook whole hogs the old school way, but that just doesn't define good food. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, Scott's is as authentic as it gets cosmetically. There are no fancy decorations or even a legit building that it resides in. It's basically a shed/home with a makeshift looking sign at the top. There's a gravel area next to it that is used as the "parking lot", although it's basically just the side of the desolate road. Behind the shed is the giant BBQ pit dome and where the family prepares the wood to use for cooking. The inside looked like a small, dingy convenience store as there were food items (bread, canned food) and goods that were sitting on wood shelves. There were also 3 small tables and a few chairs along with some counter-top seating as well. The kitchen area and ordering window were directly to the right once customers walked in. A funny thing was that it was easy to spot newbies walking into Scott's since they all had a look of bewilderment wondering what time warp they just walked thru. The menu hung over the top of the ordering window and it was very simple. Customers can either order a whole hog or portions of it, BBQ sandwiches or BBQ/chicken plates with 2 sides (baked beans, cole slaw or potato salad). That's it! The big positive on the menu was that sandwiches and plates were relatively cheap at no more than $7. My wife and I ordered the BBQ plate with sides and a chicken plate with sides, which both came with 2 slices of white bread. The sides for both plates were the same, baked beans and potato salad. We were given potato salad because they did not have cole slaw that day, which was OK. To say we were disappointed in the food was an understatement. The BBQ in the BBQ plate was pulled whole hog/pork (no substitutions) and it was as dry as a doggy bone. It also lacked much flavor too. We had to douse it with the BBQ vinegar sauce that was sitting on the counter, but that didn't really help since it wasn't true thick BBQ sauce. The sauce was more of a vinegar liquid with spice. The texture of the whole hog reminded me of certain variations of beef jerky, but with less flavor to it. The chicken in the chicken plate did not fare much better. It was also really dry and devoid of flavor, despite being a wing. The beans and potato salad were OK, but didn't make up for the letdown in the meats. At first glance, the ladies behind the counter didn't seem all that cordial and were only interested in just hearing what customers wanted to order. However, we eventually warmed up to them when we asked if we could see the ($12) T-shirts that were being sold inside and they gladly assisted with no reservations. Other than the friendly service though, we were really dissatisfied with the experience. We did not mind the hole in the wall setting as we had been to plenty of restaurants and dingy spots in our travels. To be honest, we prefer hole in the walls because of their authenticity, but at the end of the day the food is what matters and Scott's was far from what we define as good. read more

So, I'm reading an article in Southern Living "The South's Top 50 Barbecue Joints Of 2023" and it lists Scott's Bar-B-Q as #5. I enjoy bbq and like to try deferent places and Scott's is in Hemingway, SC. ROAD TRIP. So, my wife and I we drive from Aiken, SC to try out Scott's. (A two- and half-hour drive) The setting was as described and that doesn't bother me. The employees were nice enough. We ordered the three-meat plate that comes with two sides. We got slaw and baked beans. The ribs had very little meat on them. The pulled pork was moist but didn't have flavor other than a red pepper bite but was not "followed by a sweet surge of hardware smoke that lingers on the tongue" like described in the article. The chicken was the worst meat on the plate as it was dry and flavorless. The beans could have come out of a can. If they didn't, they are working too hard to make Bush's. The slaw was OK, nothing to even write about. This is the first BBQ joint we have tried on this "The South's Top 50 Barbecue Joints Of 2023" and I am now very concerned with going off this writer's opinion. I'm not the biggest fan of all forms of pork barbecue served up in South Carolina, but what is offered here is better than most, but short of the ENC BBQ I prefer. The Scott family has been cooking whole hog barbecue over hardwood coals since the early '70's, and it has reached an iconic status in SC. We ordered up a couple of pounds of pork barbecue and a barbecue sandwich to go. The pork sandwich consisted of a nice amount of pulled, not chopped, pork and 2 slices of loaf bread, no slaw, no sauce - you have to order the slaw as a side item, it seems - kinda lame for a $5.50 sandwich (for reference, Stamey's chopped sandwich with slaw is $3.25). As served up to us, the pork was smokey, but was really dry and stringy, and while the sauce helped, it was far from moist and tender pig. And when you add much sauce to a sandwich made up of sliced loaf bread, the sandwich gets soggy and comes apart - not a big fan of the mess it becomes. The sauce is a vinegar based one, and carries some real heat. It was an interesting experience but, frankly not one I'd repeat. read more

I was so excited that I was finally getting a chance to have what was supposed to be the best in Carolina bbq. I ordered ribs and pulled pork. I am still a,month later, disappointed beyond words. The ribs were gray in color, with no bark. One bite and threw them out. Turned out, the ribs were better than the pulled pork. The pulled pork was in globs of meat three or four inches long. I tried putting sauce on it to see if it would help, but the sauce turned out to taste like Texas Pete with water and cayenne pepper added. I waited about writing the review. I did not want to be unfair, but hell the stuff was awful. Maybe a bad day, but I really don't think so. Sorry, but I would avoid if I were you. read more

This was my most painful BBQ experience ever! But I say that in a good way. First thing first, make sure you have cash or you will frantically drive around the small town of Hemingway looking for an ATM. There is a CVS you can go in and buy something and get cash back. Second, this is an absolute hole in the wall with 3 tables, coolers with drinks, a counter with bananas, junk behind the counter, a tv, and several people outside ready to greet you when you come in sitting on benches. Third, the menu is very limited...sandwich, chicken, pork, and they do ribs but I think ribs is not an everyday thing. Fourth, Scott's is very cheap, a large portion, and good value. My pork plate with baked beans, slaw, and a bottle of water was $8 something. See my photos of how much pork you get...but it is a ton. Fifth, the pork is delicious! It is a tid bit dry. But you notice it less when you add the sauce. Remember how I said this was painful? The BBQ sauce is straight vinegar and pepper that gives it a bite. There is no sweet tea or potato salad to help ease the bite so you pretty much have to suffer. The slaw was really creamy and good slaw. Beans weren't bad but nothing special about them. They tasted a lot like Bush beans heated super hot. You have never had a BBQ experience like Scott's. I don't like the fact they don't have sweet tea especially since it is so cheap to make and you really need it here! It was good but man that sauce causes a lot of pain to suffer through. Always our shredded pork stop on the way to Myrtle Beach. We get 2-3 lbs of smoked meats (pork and chicken) to provide a few meals in the condo. And the cracklings are the best anywhere. My mom baked her in the oven for a greasy treat. Scott's cook the skin just right to make the cracklings dry and crisp. Look for the sandwich bags of them. I eat an entire bag driving to the beach! Check out Scott's early in the day because they close the doors when they run out. A little bit of pig heaven in the middle of nowhere. read more
