Let me start off by saying when I use to frequent School House BBQ, which was years ago, the food was very good, well seasoned and tasty. We kept returning to eat there. However, yesterday we stopped by there to eat and the food was not good at all. The food did not leave an impression for me to want to return. The food was bland. It needs more seasoning (such as the dressing needed more salt and pepper, the macaroni needed to be mixed in with the macaroni noodles and pepper, fried chicken fried too hard with no substance, sweet potatoes was not sweet, and the list goes on. I was with a group and they also expressed the same thoughts. Please take this review and improve upon the taste of your food. read more

Rode out with several motorcycle groups for a cold weather fund raising ride (temp went from 38° to a high of 54°). The money was donated to the church group which were providing the wait staff at this School house BBQ. Not sure if the church runs it or not. It is called the School house because that what it was originally back in the 1930's. It is a cool building and keeps its nice tended School house charm throughout. The food is buffet style and they had all the southern fare you would expect. I sampled a bit of everything and all was delicious. Rode to the School House BBQ with the Throttle Down Motorcycle Ministries RC on Saturday. Beautiful Scenic ride to Scranton,SC . The building reminded me of a Nostalgic Old meeting Hall setting. The buffet offered southern comfort food priced at only $10 all you could eat. Clean, friendly environment, and huge parking lot across the street at the closed gas station for additional parking. All Required CDC Protocols were followed. The Schoolhouse BBQ offered Hot Buffet, Salad & Dessert Bar Style food as well as items on a menu such as wings, sandwiches, croissant sandwiches, ice cream, burgers, dogs and a host of side orders. We opted for the buffet. Everything is home made and very tasty. My husband had the fried chicken which was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, Creamy macaroni & cheese, collard greens, green beans, and a sliver of cornbread. I, on the other hand had the southern favorites, Spicy pulled Pork,BBQ chicken, Fried Chicken with lots of brown gravy, the okra soup with chunks of tomatoes and sweet corn kernels over white rice, collard greens with neck bones, green beans with ham, corn bread and corn on the cob. Service: 5 Food Taste: 4.5 Food Presentation:4.5 Decor:5 Prices:5 Customer Service:5 Covid-19 protocols: 5+ For desert there was old country peach cobbler,Oreo cookie pudding, chocolate cake, vanilla cake, German chocolate cake, Carrot cake, and Ice cream. The food was Good well seasoned, well cooked (nothing was sitting so it wasn't dry or burned), no frills, and nostalgic almost like eating at grandma's house after church on Sunday. All staff wore gloves, masked and social distanced. Our seating arrangement was a great distance from other tables and diners. I honestly don't get the hype. I love good southern food but this buffet was lacking. Building was great, buffet was clean but that's about it. It's a small buffet and most of the food is bland and needed salt added to eat it. Fried chicken was really good. I was with a large group and all the dessert left much to be desired. Again, just ok. We have not been in a while, took my mother and her friend. Raved all the way there about the food. We get there it is awful. The dressing, potato salad even the chicken and rice were so sweet. It was awful. The sweet potatos were bland. Never had sweet gummy dressing like that. Seems someone got the sugar and salt mixed up. It was so bad we just got up and left. Came here for a meeting and I was a little disappointed. Food lacked salt across the board. Buffet was full but still disappointed in it. Fried chicken was good but rice and Gravy was bland. Corn was mushy and scalloped potatoes were not as cheesy as could be. Such a cool place with the interior but could use some sprucing up on the food. read more

I mean, what's not been said about this place? It's all so tasty! I even eat the green peas and I'm NOT a pea eater. So good. My absolute favorite thing on the bar is the peach bread pudding/cobbler. Oh. My. Goodness! It's heaven on a plate. I'll admit that I have some with each plate I make and then have another helping for dessert. I can taste it now! I have been coming here for years. Today I stopped by. They took my $14 I had one small plate of food. Went back for seconds? Hardly anything. No desert. Empty. Lunch was only $19.00 for two includes drink full buffet with a lot of items, and desert. Everything was very clean. We sat inside with lots of room. The Schoolhouse BBQ just north of downtown Scranton is a fixed-price buffet-style barbecue restaurant with cafeteria seating in a big old wooden school house overlooking the ACL (CSX) mainline. So you can stuff yourself silly and watch trains fly by out the rear window. I stopped on a road trip and it was nice to get a "home cooked" meal instead of fast food or expensive chain restaurant meals for once. I loaded up on vegetables and went back for seconds of the BBQ, even though it is quite spicy in the vinegar department--it had me tearing up and choking at first until I realized I was eating too quickly. You can eat healthy(er) by choosing from string beans, peas, corn, rice, mashed potatoes, or load up on gravy, fried chicken (which some prefer over the BBQ), all kinds of sweets and desserts. Everything is all-you-can-eat including iced tea (Southern and unsweetened), coffee, water soft drinks, and maybe other drinks as well. Atmosphere when I was there mid-afternoon was laid back, the hostess was very friendly and accomodating. Seating is anywhere from 4-top round tables to big 8-top round tables. NOTE WELL: Schoolhouse is like a number of barbeque places that only open Thursday through Sunday, so beware on other days. Also, they only accept cash, so leave home without your American Express. I sat all the way in the back of the great room and watched a man named E560 and Q493 go flying by on the CSX A-line in the short time I was there. Not too shabby! I'm a transplant from the Midwest and my first BBQ experience was the sweet sauces of Tennessee and I loved it until moving to this area (for two years) and discovered vinegar base BBQ. Now vinegar base is my absolute favorite. Haven't been back for several years and the great Country Cousins is long gone but Schoolhouse BBQ is great and just as good. My wife and I will consider the 300 mile trip worth it because we missed this type buffet so much. There is nothing on the tables that wasn't delicious. The price is a real bargain and the staff very friendly. I understand they do not use wood which is quite unusual but the pork was so moist and tasty I didn't even notice. I have lived in the north for 13 years and just recently moved back South. This is authentic southern food at it's breast!! The buffet is well stocked with southern favorites, including very yummy chicken and dumplings and they even have fried fat back. I felt like I was back in my mom's and dad's kitchen when I was kid. I know this isn't a place you need to eat at every day (maybe not even every week), but the calories are worth it. I even enjoyed looking at the old signs and advertisements from back in the day. The food was very good for a buffet and very reasonably priced. Three of us ate for $28.50 which included tax and drinks. The fried and barbequed chicken were great as was the vinegar-sauced pork bbq. BEST kale salad that I've ever had.The sweet potatoes, slaw, beets, and collards were all good. After eating there I now understand why the locals talk about it all of the time. The food here was amazing! It is a buffet style restaurant with a lot of options. THE ONE THING THAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF IS THAT THEY ONLY TAKE CASH. One Sunday our family went to church and then took a brief drive down to Scranton, SC from our home base in Florence. We had one idea in mind -- home cookin'. We found it at Schoolhouse Bar-B-Cue. The drive from Florence on Highway 52 was leisurely, just had to remember to watch our speed through the various limit changes. On this day, it was sunny, warm and pert near perfect.
