The place is truly an 800-square-foot, one-room cabin, and the proprietor, Richard, is a one-man show. He's your host, waiter, busboy, and cook. And yes, Richard is getting older and moves at a slower pace--but what he does is absolutely worth the wait and definitely worth the price.
Seriously, this is the place, but you have to understand what you're getting into. It's rustic, intimate, and operates at a slow Southern pace. If you're in a hurry, this probably isn't for you. If you're looking for something unique, it's perfect.
Our party of six had catfish and shrimp, and both were excellent and served in generous portions. The fried green tomatoes and fried okra literally came from Richard's garden earlier that day. Everything was fresh, homemade, and delicious.
The total bill for six dinners, six sodas, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, hush puppies, and three desserts came to $140 before tip. Try finding that at a Myrtle Beach tourist restaurant.
As we were leaving, Richard told us not to tell too many people about his place. I think he was only partially joking.
Luvan's is by reservation only. If you don't have a reservation, don't even bother. Richard only serves a few small groups each evening, which is probably part of what makes the experience so special.
And yes, as others have noted, there's no alcohol for sale--but you can bring your own beer to enjoy with dinner. Where else does that happen?
A big YES to Luvan's all around. Just don't tell too many people about it!
