There's a large dining area as well as two semi-private rooms you can reserve for bigger parties. You can call to order takeout. In addition to daily specials, the regular menu includes seafood items, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and sides. Liver and onions and hamburger steaks are also popular. I had a fish sandwich with sweet potato fries. The fish on the sandwich was good, although I wish I had fish in each bite of the sandwich- it was a small portion. I had to ask for tartar sauce, and the server brought it promptly. The fried squash was everyone's favorite, and six of us shared (and devoured) it. The food is simple and VERY inexpensive, and for two sandwiches/fries and appetizer, the bill was less than $25 after tax. The main reason I'm giving three stars is the tipping policies. For one, there's no line to leave a tip on credit cards. Instead, you must request cash back and tip with cash. I saw the notice on the register before receiving my check. I already had cash, as I prefer to tip in cash at restaurants- I know the servers receive it this way. When I saw the sign, I let my uncle know as he was paying for my aunt and other family members and using a credit card. I respect Shady Rest's choice of policy, but wish it was better advertised that tips are cash-only. Our large group only had two servers, and they worked super hard and deserve as much as they can possibly make via tips. This is especially true in a rural area where dollars are tight and fewer people carry cash these days. For a small-town meal, Shady Rest is simple but reliable, with options for everyone, plus the prices are low. The next time I'm in town, I'd order again and cross my fingers that fried squash is on special.

I dipped my fries in the leftover sauce. It added to the great taste of the fries which are hand cut and seasoned nicely. I got the double cheeseburger. I added jalapeños, spicy mustard, ketchup, and mayo from the free condiment list. If you have never tried it like this, I highly suggest it. After the black kids completed their order, the white male employee started yelling something seemingly directed at the customers. Initially, I didn't understand what he said, but I did see that he was looking directly at the group of black kids or me as we were standing near each other. So I asked the young people what he said. Before the girl could repeat what he said he yells, "Whoever smells like weed get out! This is a family establishment! People bring their children in here..." I was extremely offended, as he was still only looking at the black people (the kids and/or me). The kids stepped back unsure of how to respond or react. As the only black adult inside, I asked them if they'd been smoking or if they had weed on them. They responded no. Then the white male moves closer to the front of the counter where the ice cream is served, looked directly at the young people and repeated what he'd previously stated, but added that he'd call the police if they didn't leave. I went into protect mode. I stepped into the kids' semi circle and inhaled. NO WEED SMELL! So, I spoke clearly and loudly to the kids, but also for everyone to hear, "If you haven't been smoking and don't have anything illegal on you don't move! You haven't done anything wrong!" I said it a second time for clarity and affect, as I looked directly at the while man. Then I turned my back to the kids and step forward to wait behind the white couple who were placing their order. Well low and behold, what do you think slaps me directly in the face? THE SMELL OF WEED COMING FROM THE YOUNG WHITE COUPLE WHO HAD A BABY IN THE STROLLER! I immediately moved a few steps back! First of all because the couple smelled horrible. Secondly, to show my displeasure of the "loud" smell. I announced to the kids, "It's not you, it's them." Everyone heard me: customers, employees, and the weed smelling couple. The female employees were watching me as if they didn't know what to think of me... (Yeah, I'm gonna protect mine! I'll protect theirs too, if need be!) The female that was stank turned and looked at me as if she was embarrassed, but did not say a word. Her partner acted as if he was the most innocent person in the room. No shame or guilt. The white male employee goes back to doing whatever he was supposed to be doing before he started accusing black kids of being his culprits. NO APOLOGIES. NOTHING - FROM NO ONE! I was pissed!!! What would have happened if I was not present? Listen WHITE PEOPLE: People smoke weed: black people, white people, Asian people, old people, young people, every race, color and creed. STOP THINKING THAT BLACKS ARE ALWAYS THE THUGS, AND THE CRIMINALS! THIS TIME IT WAS ONE OF YOUR OWN!!
