I had red rice, fried fish/shrimp, cabbage/greens mix, and chicken rice. Let's start with the red baby food, because if that was rice, I'd need absolutely NO TEETH to enjoy it! The chicken rice was yuck - no flavor, but lots of chicken. The fried fish was fried soggy and no flavor, just like the shrimp. The cabbage and greens mix ... the cabbage was gross, greens interestingly seasoned with sugar, with a kind of burnt taste. That wasn't bad nor good, but definitely more bad than good. Friendly place on the edge of town. I went in and found a big fluorescent lit room with a service bar at one end. So, I decided to take out. They offer small and large plates, or you can serve yourself and pay by weight. I got a large plate with 3 sides, ribs & cornbread. Huge amount of chicken bogs: rice with sausage & chicken. Classic bbq buffet in the sleepy town of Kingstree, SC. 3 stars because the star of the show - the bbq- didn't taste fresh. I have had their bbq before when it has been fresh and it's awesome so I know they just missed the mark this time . The sides I tried were delicious - collards, dressing , macaroni, meatloaf. The bbq sauce is on point - vinegar based with a little kick to it . The bbq style is pulled. The restaurant is clean and spacious and there is plenty of options on the buffet and dessert bar. There is a salad bar that is $1 extra . I added it but never got a salad so I don't recommend unless you really want a salad . They offer drive through pickup if you don't feel like coming inside . Overall , this restaurant is an asset to Kingstree and I would dine here again whenever I am back in the area and hopefully add more stars. read more

Unless you are a geography nerd, you have probably never heard of Kingtree SC. I fancy myself a geography enthusiast, a geograthusiast if you will, and have never heard of it. There really is nothing here. Except of course this BBQ restaurant. As I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed a plethora of cars and took that as a portend of good food. The food WAS good, but that's it; slightly above average maybe. The cars in the parking lot belonged to a throng of geriatrics having some sort of communal lunch. I would guess the group numbered around 25, making their combined ages equal to that of the Biblical Methuselah. If there is one thing old people know how to do, it is move slowly. And when it is cold outside, like it was today, their poor bones and joints move as freely as a pair of rusty scissors. Being without a 20gallon bucket of WD40, I had to endure the creaky door hinge noises and the sounds of false teeth flapping and clacking loudly. Imagine the tickle I got when their dentures whistled their way through the "sister Suzy sitting on a thistle" refrain from the popular Christmas tune "All I Want for Christmas is Some More False Teeth". As I said, the food was average. Here is the rundown: BBQ- 4 stars. Spicy and juicy and flavorful Fried chicken- 3.5 stars. Not crispy enough Pulled chicken- 2 stars. Very dry Green beans- 2.5 stars. Lifeless Mac and cheese- 3.9 stars- Good flavor but very salty Rice and sausage- 1 star. Cold and flavorless Banana pudding- 2.5 stars. I like my BP made with vanilla pudding instead of banana. Too bananay Pecan pie- 4.5 stars- best thing I had The price was ridiculously expensive. $12.95 for an all you can eat buffet? They even charge extra for the salad bar. One trip to the buffet is $11.55! That is entirely too much. I don't think I've ever paid more than $10 for a comparable BBQ buffet. The first time I went here, I was in a bad place with someone important in my family passing away. He was at the point in his life where he could find no joy, or taste in anything due to all the medication he was on. I had a friend who knew that I was desperate to find something he would eat because he was wasting away before our eyes and everything we tried just wasn't cutting it, he would only take a couple of bites and that would be it. He told me to give Brown's a try and even drove me and my son out there. I got a couple of plates with different things on it to carry it home and the people behind the counter were so nice and friendly and really took care of me fixing the plates and getting things for him! I never did get a chance to thank them for their kindness that day. When I brought the food home, he actually perked up and ate until he was full and kept going back to get more because he enjoyed so much. That was high praise from him indeed! He would never willingly go back for leftovers unless he liked it and it took him 3 days to really eat it all because he wasn't used to eating a whole lot. Great food that left us with great memories! I do believe that was our last good dinner where he perked up before passing a couple months later. read more

A lot of people claim that Bessingers is the best in the state, I have never had it but they are going to have to be damn good to beat Browns. Pork: the pork is fantastic. Juice, spicy, sweet, and everything that pulled porn BBQ should be. Turkey: the turkey has a fantastic smoke flavor with a sauce that has just the right amount of kick and sweetness to it. Something I love with my poultry is sweetness in the sauce Friend chicken: FANTASTIC! Some of the best I have ever had. Juicy and crispy in all the right spots. Side dishes: I tried the mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, coleslaw, pilau, and red rice and I have no complaints. The Brown method is gas cooked, then sauced with just vinegar and pepper. Hardly any smoked flavor. But if you (like most BBQ diners) have no idea what real BBQ is, then you'll probably love this place. The sides are their selling point. The yams are bright orange and not overly sweet. The dressing is the best I've ever had. The BBQ gravy and brown gravy are to die for. But, if you want something truly special and unique to this restaurant (around here anyway), try the Philly Cheesesteak! Don't be shy....go ahead and order it 'all the way'. This barbecue is the best barbecue I've ever had, hands down. I'm from coastal Georgia, where the barbecue is often served with a side of sauce (which can often be delicious). However, this barbecue needs NO sauce because it is marinated in a vinegar-based concoction while it cooks. As a result, it is extremely flavorful and moist on its own. Whenever I'm visiting family in Williamsburg, or whenever they come to visit us at the holidays, I always request a container of Brown's BBQ and I eat it hot or cold until it's all gone. Now note this ain't no Texas style bar b que, where a bad cut of beef is overcooked and then cover with sauce to hide what has happened, It ain't no chicken wing sauce either. On recommendation of hotel in Florence I drove to Kingstree to eat at Brown's--a 50 mile drive, one way. It was not worth the drive and would not have been had the food been free. All of the meat was dry and stringy. The catfish tasted liked it had been dipped in bleach. The only decent item was the glazed sweet potato. The "service" was nonexistent. I realize you should not expect much service from buffet style but when a customer asks for a plate you might actually stop your conversation with your coworker and turn around and not just hand the plate over your shoulder. Additionally, if there are only four tables of diners in the restaurant then there should not be five dirty tables waiting to be cleaned. I went on a Wednesday, arrived at 7:20. Maybe they do better when they are crowded---but I for one will never know. read more

I also have to correct a previous reviewer that Mamma Browns barbecue is NOT "North Carolina" barbecue; it is the epitome of Williamsburg County (South Carolina) Style BBQ. The hot vinegar is actually a homemade, seriously coveted, family secret recipe that is unlike anything you can purchase in any silly tourist gift shop or grocery store; it can only be created when cooking the hog that it it ends up being served with. Even Mrs. Brown herself will not share this recipe with her own offspring, I've heard. I urge anyone craving real barbecue to go to Mamma Browns.
