I spotted this marker on the way to the beach, not home. So we were unable to make much of a purchase. I didn't want to buy any of their fresh meat as it was possible that it might spoil before it made it home. Instead, I got to enjoy the historical marker here and continue onwards. The front of the sign reads, "Burrows's Service Station. This significant cultural and architectural example of a 20th-century country store was built in 1937 by Theron Burrows (1910-1973) when U.S. Hwy. 521 was finished from Georgetown to Manning. A combination grocery and gas station with family living quarters on the second floor, it was affiliated with Esso (now Exxon) and had the motto "we serve the needs of the neighborhood."" And on the reverse, "Cooper's Country Store. Burrows's Service Station sold not only staple goods, fresh meat, and produce, but also clothing, farm supplies, hardware, feed and seed, and automotive products and parts. After Burrows died in 1973 his son-in-law George Cooper bought the business, renaming it "Cooper's Country Store;" it now boasts several second- and third-generation employees and customers." I drove 40 miles to see if all the talk about this place was true or not. This was one of the dirtiest places that sell food that I've ever been in. People working there were like zombies. Since I made the trip to get there, I decided to at least try the BBQ. Got a pound to bring home and it is absolutely the worst I've ever had in my entire life. Not sure what the folks who wrote the articles in Southern Living and Garden & Gun magazines were smoking but I'd sure like to have some of that stuff. read more

*Face mask required* sign at front door, Nobody that works there wears one. -Customer service is terrible at the deli/ food line. -Dirty and cluttered. You run into or trip over merchandise. One thing I love about the south is older country stores, this one was a disappointment. read more

I have been coming here my entire life. The best barbecue on the planet. The people here are kind and helpful in every way. I don't live around there anymore but I order and pick up when I come into town regularly. This time I am coming through on a Sunday when they are closed. I called them up anyway and they said they would have it ready for me and They would put it at a predetermined spot for me to pick up all nicely packed in ice. They told me to pay when I could. Needless to say I just paid him over the phone and they have known me for 5+ decades so they offered that but these folks are just that helpful and the BBQ is divinely made! Love them! One year I did a taste test with friends from Colorado using 3 BBQ's from the area. Coopers won hands down! I have found it moist and delicious. I may be prejudice since I grew up in Williamsburg County, but BBQ fixed this way where one is continually basting or mopping the hog makes for a more moist BBQ! Vinegar and black/red pepper sauce is the best!!! read more

My wife and I are trying to visit the BBQ places on the Best of SOuth Carolina BBQ lists. We drove 2 hours to Cooper's Country Store to give it a try. We entered the store and found our way to the back where the meat counter is. I ordered two pulled pork sandwiches. The gentleman handed me two sandwiches which were wrapped in plastic wrap. I said are these fresh and he said I just made them. We took them outside to the picnic tables and ate them. They were cold. They did taste good and had a nice tang to the sauce. However best in SC, not in my book. read more

This place is horrible. I ordered a bbq sandwich and a hotdog. BBQ sandwich he took out of the fridge and slung it in a microwave for 30 seconds. Asked for bbq sauce and he says we only have Texas Pete. Almost choked on my first bite it was so dry. Next I unwrapped the hot dog only to find a dyed red weenie staring back at me. Flew in to Kingstree from Washington State for a long weekend to visit my Daughter who now lives there. We were looking for a BBQ place to try and her Boss Suggested Coopers Country Store. My Daughter had been to the other BBQ places in the area Brown's and Monkey Bottom Boys. She thought this was the best, the flavor from the vinegar based sauce is amazing!!! They really got a winner here. May not be for everyone. If you are looking for a full service restaurant this is not the place but if you want just a BBQ sandwich some ribs chicken etc to eat on the go, take home or eat outside in the shade I would be surprised if you are disappointed. Great family run store with a little bit of everything. Tourists on their way to the beach often stop and make it a regular destination. They are known for their country smoked hams. One of a few places you will see an old fashion butcher shop. My husband would always have to stop when he was taking our daughter out for a drive to the farm. They would come back with a slab of bologna and cheese cut off the wheel. That was their special treat. A very unique store. Really one of a kind! read more

i have heard about this place for a few years now and thought we would make the trip coming home from the beach back to Columbia, very disappointed! i got half a BBQ chicken and it was just a baked chicken drowned in BBQ sauce,real BBQ chicken is cooked over a wood pit that you can taste and smell. the others got BBQ sandwich's that barely had any meat on them and they could not even finish them. after that disappointment we did not even buy any of their other meats at the counter especially after seeing some of it[sausage links that were shriveled up].if you want good BBQ chicken then try hites BBQ in w cola,sc or true bbq[anything they have is good].looking for good meat then try wil-moore farms,old timey meat market. coopers was a big let down, i would not recommend this place to anyone. read more
