Pork chops, mac'n'cheese and baked beans.
    Katherine H.

We grabbed some food to go. There were so many wonderful looking choices. The staff were very patient as we debated the best way to order for everyone. I went with pork chops, mac'n'cheese, baked beans, and hush puppies with sweet tea. The prices were really great for so much food. My family had fried chicken, collard greens, and sweet potatoes. Everything I tried was amazing! One of the best pork chops I've ever had. It's pretty simple inside. The buffet prices were amazing!

Chicken bog, mustard bbq, Mac & cheese, green beans, Lima beans, Brunswick stew, and hush puppies.

That spontaneous decision turned into one of our favorite discoveries. We had just moved from Virginia to Conway and were still getting a feel for the area, so everything felt new. The restaurant offered both indoor and outdoor seating, but the real draw? A peaceful view of the Waccamaw Riverwalk. Sitting outside, overlooking the water, we instantly relaxed--it was the perfect welcome to our new town. Then came the food--and wow. We were blown away. I ordered the seafood sampler loaded with shrimp, oysters, catfish, tater tots, and coleslaw. Every bite was fresh, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. My wife went with the pulled pork dinner, complete with classic sides, pickles, and Texas toast. We swapped bites and couldn't stop raving about how good everything was--especially for the price. Coming from Virginia, I thought I knew BBQ--ketchup-based and familiar. But this was something else entirely. That rich, tangy mustard-based South Carolina barbecue completely changed my expectations. It was a delicious surprise that instantly made me a fan. Our waitress let us know they served brunch on weekends--so back we went. Same riverside view, same laid-back vibe, but a whole new level of indulgence. I ordered the Brunch Chimichanga--crispy, savory perfection--while my wife went all-in on the Brunch Burger: French toast, sausage beef patty, over-easy egg, bacon, American cheese, maple syrup, powdered sugar, and hashbrown casserole. Yes, it was as incredible as it sounds. Now, Bonfire Taqueria isn't just a place we tried--it's a place we return to again and again. Great food, relaxing views, and a welcoming atmosphere make it one of our go-to spots to unwind, sip a drink, and soak in everything we love about downtown Conway.

Luckily I saw a packed place on Mr. Joe White Avenue called Simply Southern Smokehouse. Place looked legit and had a full parking lot so I pulled in. There is only one way in and once you get in, the cashier is on the right with the $15 all you can eat buffet right next to it. The $15 also included all you can drink soft drinks, water and sweet tea. I paid my money and grabbed a plate and ran right up to the buffet. They start out light with vegetables and sides, working up to the main courses of fried chicken, fried fish, pulled pork, smoked chicken and some hot wings. After that, they had some mac & cheese, and then the desserts which was blueberry cobbler, peach cobbler, homemade banana pudding...and a couple of other things. I started off with some broad beans, stewed okra and tomatoes, smoked chicken and hot wings. I brought my plate and my silverware to an empty table, which was getting hard to find as the place was so packed and then went up to fetch me a glass of water to wash it down with. They serve Pepsi products and of course sweet tea but I was going to save my calories for dessert. The place was clean, well lit and the seating was well designed with booths along the wall and tables in the center... and plenty of room between the tables. Once seated I dug right in. The broad beans were excellent. Done right and full of flavor. The stewed tomatoes and okra, although cook correctly was a bit bland for my liking. The smoked chicken was excellent and I used a bit of the golden SC BBQ sauce on it...great...and homemade. The hot wings were the real deal meaty and moist with a nice kick. I finished the plate in about five minutes. Time for round two. On my second trip up, I put some collard greens, lima beans, a piece of fried chicken and a piece of fried fish on the fresh plate. As I sat down to eat, I put a bit of hot vinegar sauce on the collard greens and dug in. The collards were excellent and the homemade vinegar hot sauce gave it a bit of a kick and bite. The Lima beans were soft and loaded with flavor. I then moved on to the fried chicken, which was cooked correctly with the skin crispy and well battered and the meat moist on the inside. That said, it was bland. Given how well the beans were seasoned I was surprised. Same thing with the fish, but they had a real good house sauce for it which gave it a nice flavor and saved it, but overall both the fried chicken and the fried fish were bland. I then went up for a plate number three and realized I was not gonna be able to eat anymore mains, which was a shame since the pulled pork looked great... It will have to wait for the next time I come. I did, however leave a bit of room for dessert and I'm glad I did . The banana pudding was delicious with a full banana taste and 'Nilla wafers on top and bottom adding a bit of crunch. I only had enough room for one of the cobbler so I chose peach and it did not disappoint. Nice and warm with a sweet peach flavor and tasty crumbles. I wanted more but controlled myself. As I got up to leave, I placed five dollars on the table for the cleanup guy who was hustling and keeping the place neat and tidy. I then looked around and noticed this was a real local spot full of people from Myrtle Beach. You have families, elderly people, young people, construction workers and people from local businesses. For $15 it cannot be beat. Not only will I be back again but I plan on bringing some of my friends from up north who are going to love this place...plus I gotta try that pulled pork and Mac and cheese...if the fried chicken and fish have more seasoning, I'll up them to 5 stars.

This evening was a very good experience, mostly. Let's get the less than positive out of the way. We made reservations for 5PM. We were out and about and got there about a half an hour early. Walk in, spoke with the hostess and explained we knew we were early. (By the way, there were very few people in the restaurant at the time). The Hostess, an older female with longish greying hair, huffed then showed us to a table. She at least took us to an outside table as we requested. She never identified herself. And honestly we felt as if we were bothering her. Ok, enough of that. Now the positive. Our server was Taylor. This young man was awesome. He was upbeat and personable. Very pleasant and wanted to communicate, not just serve us. My wife and I asked for water, and ordered an appetizer of their Mac and Cheese balls. They were awesome. Hot, fresh, stuffed with pasta and warm flavorful cheese. Next we ordered cocktails. My wife ordered a Painkiller. Me an Old Fashion. Taylor recommended I try their version, New Fashion. Made with their mix of a house Bourbon. Man it was good. And the Painkiller? Let's just saw I held my wife hand, and guided her to our vehicle. For our main courses, my wife had the chicken and sausage pasta. I had the Bison Ribeye. Both we would order again without hesitation. The pasta dish was huge. With two breasts and numerous pieces of sausage. Over Fettuccini style pasta, with a lite and flavorful red sauce. It tasted fresh, and rich. She could only eat about a third of it. The rest came home. I ordered my Bison medium rare. The Chef hit it perfectly. Beautiful red meat in the center, nice and warm. So much flavor, and tender. With it I had the potato of the day. They were mashed with the skin. Full of butter, milk, and seasoned. In addition I had a side of creamed spinach. Very rich and deep. The cream tasted similar to a cheese sauce. So good. I brought nothing home. Finished the entire meal there. In addition, because it was our anniversary, the gave us a very nice card. And a piece of cake for dessert. Champaign was offered, but neither of us drink it, and didn't want to waste it. If you haven't tried Crooked Oak Tavern, you are missing a very nice experience.

I'm suspecting that it will be the same weekend every year. There is a BBQ competition and all contestants must smoke Boston Butts and make pulled pork (hey, it's South Carolina). They also have the option of smoking ribs for judging. Cash prizes are awarded in both categories but in order to get the Grand Champion prize you have to cook in both categories. Judging is done on Saturday and the Shrine Club serves the pulled pork around 11:30. Let me tell you, that pulled pork was delicious. Being the first year, there are a few minor kinks the organizers need to work out for next year. Some extra napkins would have been nice. The festival also has an arts and craft area for vendors which is fun to walk around. There are also quite a few bounce castles for kids. Definitely worth visiting next time around.

What a bummer and a let down! While visiting our daughter at…read morethe beach, we decided to attend this festival to have something fun to do on a Friday night. After checking three different websites, and driving 30+ minutes to get there, we found out only soup was being served Friday night and the barbecue was not being served until Saturday. Also there is absolutely no signage directing you where to park that's close to the event or once your parked where the event is located, so we walked around aimlessly until we asked someone where the venue was and he pointed us in the right direction. Not one of the three websites said that the barbecue was only being served on Saturday, it they had we would not have gone Friday night, because I wanted barbeque, not no damn soup! On top of that tickets were one dollar each for a soup sample served in a very small styrofoam cup. My daughter bought a few tickets and some of the vendors did not even fill the very small cup all the way up so to me this was a big waste of money to pay a dollar for a couple of tablespoonfuls of soup. And from what I heard while we were walking around, we were not the only ones complaining about this issue including the vendors who said they had to be there Friday night serving soup to be able to participate in the barbecue in Saturday. To me this event was poorly planned and executed because If your websites say it's a two day event, then barbecue needs to be served both nights or inform people on the websites that barbeque is only going to be served on Saturday night so people like me and many others that didn't want no damn soup wouldn't waste their time and gas driving there to get barbecue to find out you could only get soup on Friday night.

The employees were nice and I heard the cashier telling someone it was her family's business. It's not decorated fancy , but the dining room is clean and has honest bbq. I got the Pulled Pork Plate with 2 Sides and a Sweet Tea. I also ordered an extra side. If you're a Veteran like me , your drink is free. The Pulled Pork was tasty and a good portion and they give you a bun even though you didn't order a sandwich you have bread to go with it. I ordered Hush Puppies as my bread , but still ate the top bun with my meal. Hush Puppies were pretty good when warm , my last one when it cooled down then tasted a little oily so eat them while they're hot. Usually I get a Pulled Pork Sandwich instead of a platter and have Slaw on it. Well I got a side of Slaw and it was Mayo style , not Vinegar style and I didn't like it. The young lady let me replace them with the Beans and they were very good. Potato Salad was average , I like a little more mustard in mine. Now for the BBQ Sauces. They have 5 BBQ Sauces which is a good variety to have. I liked the Hot , Vinegar , and Rob Sauce the most. For Pulled Pork I found if you mix the Hot and Vinegar Sauces it worked the best. If I would've had Brisket then the Rob Sauce would be my pick for it. The Mild was okay , but I prefer more of a kick. The Mustard Sauce was weak and not tangy enough and I usually like a good mustard sauce sometimes on pulled pork , but prefer the vinegar. Sweet tea ok , not too sweet like some places. Overall it's a well rounded bbq place. My total with tax was $19.70 with my free Veteran's drink , pulled pork platter and 3 sides. I would like to come back and try the Brisket next time. I would recommend you giving it a try and support a local family business.
