Oh my gosh! What a great disappointment this was! I had not been to this place in years. I grew up eating here when I was still in my parent's house. And remember it as being really good, but taste buds were sorely disappointed when we decided to go get takeout there a few weeks ago. Everything tasted like it had all been cooked in the same pot. No flavor really at all. The barbecue was greasy, the chicken and rice was overcooked and for the price it was robbery. No one time was more than enough for me to say that I won't be wasting my money there ever again. I don't know what happened to them, but someone truly has not kept up the standard of service even not to mention how much they have let food quality go down! They have done nothing with the appearance of the place inside in all these years either. Takeout area is smaller than my closest. This experience started off bad, and ended up worse. When my wife and I walked in, we were ignored at the register by two employees that were having a conversation and completely ignored us. I'm impossible to miss. I had to interrupt to get the lady's attention. There are no signs telling you to seat yourself. We were in the dining room off to the right, which had a very musty smell. Not appetizing. As far as the food, nothing is labeled. NOTHING! Where do I start? The mac and cheese was overly crusty. The regurgitated pulled pork looked like something for a baby. Upon checking on two different visits, no fried chicken breast. When the bbq chicken came out, it was so dry, the sauce couldn't save it. The ribs were sitting on a plate, nice and cold. The reason it didn't get one star? Because our server was great and the dessert was good. When we got back to the hotel, and we were talking to the bartender about it. We ate here recently and thought it was just alright. If everything would have been as good as the fried chicken then you'd really have something. Aside from that, I thought it was average. The staff seemed friendly and they were always bringing stuff out to refill the buffet so it wasn't like the food was cold we've just had better. This was an experience. The wife and I were passing by Florence on 95 on our way home and decide that we'd try some SC BBQ. There were quite a few places in teh area but we choose Cain's because of the reviews here on Yelp! I have to admit, this was not what I was expecting. I was expecting to walk in and find pork in varying states slathered in various sauces. But this was basically a small buffet with about a dozen or so different local dishes. We arrived a little after 4:30 pm so we got to sample some of both the afternoon and evening dishes. I'll start with the not so good as it easier because there were really only three things I did not care for. The first was the ribs. They were dry and there was very little meat on them. One of the waitresses explained that unlike some other places, Cain's cooks the entire hog. Unfortunately, the portion that was currently being served lacked substance. Another disappointment was the mac and cheese. Even with a "fresh" pan, I found it dry and rather flavorless. The last item on the pass list was the deviled eggs. They could use more paprika and salt and way less pickle! Now for the rest. . . The Chicken Fried Pork Chop were great! As was the Chicken Dumplings. I'm not usually a fan of casseroles but I I could not pass up the opportunity to try a few new things. There was a Potato Casserole that was really quite good, if a bit overboard on the onions. But it still had a nice flavor and I went back for more. The surprise of the day was the Pineapple Casserole. This stuff was heaven on a folk! It was bloody incredible. The thing I found most surprising was the ingredients. Warm pineapple, Ritz crackers and cheese! Who would have thunk it?? To be honest, had I heard those ingredients before trying it, I probably would have passed. They just don't "sound" like something that would be appetizing, let alone taste as good as it does. Just goes to show, you never know.! I did not have any but the wife said the hush puppies were OK. Nothing special but not terrible either. Another surprise was the fried chicken. I guess I bought into the stereotype that everybody in the South makes great Fried Chicken. But I found this choice here to be just OK. Frankly, I like the stuff at Golden Corral more. The waitstaff here was great, The classic southern ladies. Extremely friendly and attentive. 3 or 4 different women must have come over to the table at least a half dozen times to check on us despite pretty much everything being self-serve. A couple actually stayed to chat for quite some time. I guess the irony was that neither of us actually had any of the pulled port and chicken in red sauce. The classic BBQ we had come for. But by the time we had finished sampling everything else we were stuffed and could not managed another folk full. Oh well. Next time. And there will definitely be a next time! And the best part of all this? The price!. $10.45/pp, beverage included! Would definitely recommend to anyone passing anywhere near Florence. It's well worth a short detour. This is the best Southern BBQ buffet in the USA. If you are ever near Florence on the US95, set your GPS and enjoy this bounty of food for only $10.95 including beverage (sweet tea of course). Besides for incredible fried chicken and BBQ chicken with Carolina red sauce, there was an array of dishes most folks outside of that area (Including me) have probably never tried. The highlight of that category was Fried pineapple casserole (cheese and coconut I think) but turnips, butter beans and fried Okra were equally impressive. The mainstays, including mac and cheese, chicken w/Carolina rice, yams, carrot salad, cole slaw and buttery, flaky biscuits were off the chart. Untried were steak and gravy and chopped pork too. Homemade hot sauce on the table and fresh peanut butter cookies for desert also great touches. No names of items on the buffet, no website, no sauce for sale, just incredible low-country southern cookin in the same place for 40 years. Ask who Woody was and hear a great story also. Tradition dictates that this joint is only open Thursday-Saturday, so keep that in mind and have a meal that will be remembered for years. read more

This restaurant is only open Thursday through Sunday, but the food is worth the wait. The bill of fare is buffet style and very local in its flavor. The BBQ is quite good, and the amenities are equally appetizing. Their hush puppies are super! Don't expect to get heart healthy options, I didn't see any. We happened upon Cain's on the way to the coast. We stopped for lunch and saw they had a BBQ buffet. We did not intend to eat so much, but it was very good. The place just began to fill for lunch. I asked others their what they thought, and they each were regulars and loved this place. Though my daughter did not think the mac-n-ceese was "great" she did enjoy it. For me, the focus was on the BBQ, and other buffet items were secondary. The BBQ was very moist and slightly peppery. Maybe a bit heavy on the vinegar, but it was still quite good. It was chopped to a good size and not minced, so it retained good moisture and flavor. I spoke to a woman, the daughter of the original owner I believe she said. She was very nice and came around to ask how folks were doing. We chatted briefly and she mentioned the original restaurant was across the street. She said they now used electric cookers. I know that's not preferred by purists, but the Q was still pretty good. She mentioned they often have live entertainment as well. My wife and I also tried many of the buffet items. The fried chicken had a good flavor and was moist, but was a bit greasy, not real crispy. The chicken bog, a chicken and rice dish, was good. The meat moist and sauce thick. I could have eaten quite a bit of that. Their sweet tea is pretty good as well, good sweet southern tea, but not overly sweet to the point you cannot taste the tea. The potato casserole was also very good, not overly salty, and had a nice cheese flavor, baked for a crispy top and slight crunch when you bite into it. I tried a couple deviled eggs as well; these were good, but a little tangy to me. Not sure what filling they use, but had a mustard taste to them. They were okay, but I think adding paprika would enhance the flavor, and I might cut bake pin the mustard if that is what was used with the mayo. The green beans were excellent, not too soft, not too crisp, just right. They may have been cooked in lard which may not be calorie conscious, but sure adds flavor. My wife did not care for the hush puppies, but I really liked them. They were not very sweet, but just barely sweet enough to add a nice layer to the cornbread. The were cooked perfectly, very light and crisp on the outside, and soft but not chewy on the inside. I even added a little butter and had 6 or so. The BBQ was god enough that I went back for seconds. I mixed in a little cole slaw, a mayo based slaw, and filled up. Regretfully, I had no room for dessert. Overall, I like Cain's. Plenty of southern comfort food and a great price. Certainly not a place that is light on calories, but it is heavy on taste and comfort. The people working there were nice and chatty, which we like. Has a home-like feel, like eating with friends. If you are heading to or from the coast or in the area for other reasons, give Cain's a try. You won't leave hungry. read more

I hate to write a bad review, but this was bad!!! Stopped in for what wAs expected to be southern bbq. Less than impressed. The chicken and rice had bones in every bite. The ribs were mediocre at best. The fried chicken was a greasy mess and super dry. The sides were nothing special. No fresh veggies, everything was out of a can and had no flavor or was overly sweet. The people are nice and for sure have the southern hospitality thing going for them. But the food was among the worst I've had. I love hole in the wall places.. Not so much this one. Tried it with the family for the 1st time last weekend. They had a live bluegrass band so that was kind of neat. Good southern food. BBQ was tasty and surprisingly the fried fish and crab cakes were amazig too. I didn't really care for the hushpuppies at all, but the biscuits on the buffet were delicious.It was also cool that they gave us a pitcher of tea and set on the table so we could help ourselves. I like that because I'm a fast drinker and I hate waiting on refills. I also appreciated the fact that kids under 3 eat free, so my toddler got to have some food without me shelling out another $12/pp. I'd recommend if it if you are in the mood for some real souther bbq. read more
