I'm going to make a bold statement right now..this is the absolute best BBQ I've ever had. We've passed Michael D'z BBQ every time on our way to and from Bucees in Florence, SC and every time we say 'next time we're stopping there'. Well today, 4 years later of saying that, we stopped. It's a small 'food truck' (but it doesn't move from this spot), and I believe the smoker in the front is where eveything is made. The smell is unmistakeable and you can take it to go or eat inside a covered area that has booths and even a pool table. They sell farm fresh eggs and other various produce, flavored honeys and bottle of bbq sauce. What we ordered.. 1/2 rack ribs - don't even know where to start with how tender, fall of the bone the ribs were, with a perfectly spicy bbq sauce 1/2 lb sliced brisket - this is their best seller and my lord, I entirely understand why 1/2 chicken - hubs loves chicken and this was like a mutant because it was gigantic and not overly smokey, but just right dipped in the rib sauce A small container of potato salad - had I known how truly delicious this was going to be, I'd definitely have gone bigger. Next time!! It was a tad sweet but balanced perfectly with relish. I have no problem traveling for quality.. this spot is about 1.5 hours away from Myrtle beach where we stay, and worth every minute of the drive. Best of all, I got to meet Mike!! He's a southern gentleman, a blast to chat with and I cant wait to go back. If you're traveling south on 95 through SC, it's a couple miles off the Bucees exit, I suggest you take the detour and give it a try!!!! read more

I'll start with what's good: The brisket was amazing. Tender, juicy, fatty, just how I like it. The ribeye steak sandwich was cooked properly but was lacking some seasoning, but was saved by putting some BBQ red sauce, so spend the extra money for it. The people there were really friendly too. Honestly, the issue I have with this place and why I didn't rate it higher was the cleanliness. If you need to use a bathroom, hold it and go to Buc-ee's down the road. But my biggest issue was the overabundance of flies everywhere. Hopefully they invest in some fans or traps so I don't have to get eaten alive waiting for food or watch the dozens (yes, dozens) mating on the jam and snack table. read more

We've lived within an hour of this place for 9 months now, and probably had it about 9 times....its delicious! Often times we get 1/2 lbs of chopped bbq pork, or a bbq pork sandwich, but this time around we tried to ribs! WOW! This guy definitely knows what he's doin around a smoker. So happy to have found an incredible local bbq joint. Do not sleep on this place, don't pass it because it doesn't look fancy enough. Stopped in for lunch 11/18 on the way to the beach for Thanksgiving. Kind of an odd set up. You order and pick up you food from a food trailer. In front of the trailer is a building with old booths and tables. It also has a large screen TV, a lone pool table and a bathroom. If you don't want a large Trump cut out staring at you while you eat, have to listen to Fox news blasting from the TV or read other political crap plastered all over the inside, then I suggest you eat outside or in your vehicle. On the back side of the trailer is a picnic area with concrete tables and benches, wooden picnic tables and old booths with tables which is where we sat since it was sunny and 77 the day we stopped in. There is also tons of stacked hickory wood out back used for smoking. We both got pork barbecue sandwiches without slaw since they only have the green mayo based slaw neither one of us like. Plus they charge extra for slaw on a sandwich here which has always been included on a sandwich at any other barbecue joint we have eaten at. The barbecue was chopped so fine it was like barbeque mush and we have never, ever eaten barbeque chopped this fine before. Although you could taste the smoke and you received a generous portion on slightly larger than normal bun, it was far from best barbecue we have ever eaten especially for the price, with a barbeque sandwich without slaw costing $7 each, $8 each with slaw. We split some baked beans for our side that were served room temp at best that came straight from a can and was some the worst baked beans we have ever eaten. All drinks come in cans or bottles. Two barbeque pork sandwiches with one side, one water and a Pepsi was just shy of $25, cash only. Service was friendly. My wife ended up with an upset stomach after eating here and we both said the same thing, we have eaten barbecue that was way better than what we got here, so this place was a one and done for us. read more

The portions were generous and the $28 price reasonable. There was no sauce provided and no drinks were included. The beans tasted like they were right out of a can and included no bacon/pork. Very bland. The slaw taste like it was from a grocery store rather than home made. Didn't seem fresh/crisp. The ribs were charred and dry to the bone. The pulled pork was pulverized like hash. We ordered the pork bbq sandwich basket. For $6 you get just the sandwich, but for $12 you also get a small amount of slaw and unremarkable crinkle fries. The sandwich is sizable by itself. The pork bbq is, let's say, interesting. I've grown up eating eastern carolina vinegar bbq, but I've never tasted a concoction like this. I felt like I'd smoked a pack of cigarettes after eating the sandwich as it had so much smoke flavoring added to it. I don't see how that much smoke flavor would be infused into the meat just from the cooking process, unless cardboard adds that much flavor. If you think the best barbecue is always found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this isn't it. If, on the other hand, you think it can be found coming from a trailer anchored to a concrete slab on a county road, just past maybe a half dozen churches and a score of mobile homes, then you've found it. It being D'z Pit Cooked Barbecue in Florence. Order at the window (Sheila has the big smile and welcoming chatter), and then take it inside the 1950's poolhall in the building next store. The one with years of Coke memorabilia, an antique motorcycle for ambiance and a few booths for 'cue customers. As someone who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read 120+ Yelp reviews covering barbecue joints from New York City to San Diego ), we won't contend this is the best, but it's pretty darn good and for those who big on spice, D'z has some to spare. We ordered their "Little BBQ Platter, which they say serves approximately two people, and which in our experience, coupled with an extra side and some pork rinds (more on those later) was enough for four. Starting first with the meat. the ribs are well rubbed babybacks served in an aluminum gizmo with sauce that was maybe a quarter inch deep. The ribs are good; there's a thick coating of the rub which adds texture and spice. On the subject of spice, it's most notable on the brisket, which Sheila and pit master Nancy explained, is because beef absorbs more of the spice than pork. Pulled pork, in most places, comes in strands. At D'z its almost pulverized which is a good thing because that means the fat stays in the mix and the fat catches the smoke's flavor and with a couple of kitchen supplied shots of their sauce, adds to a full flavored taste. The brisket came chopped in maybe half inch pieces and was by far (see above for reason) the most spicey. Half of us thought it was great, the other half (whose opinion we generally ignored) thought not. We didn't sample the chicken; you're on your own there. Now about the sides: Good and very good, slaw and the potato salad in that order. Turns out the trailer is a little too cramped to make them on the premise so they are, in corporate speak, out sourced. Use your imagination. What's in the rub? Well pepper for certain, but after that, no one is talking except to say that owner Mike Livingston (the shirtless one who comes through the pool hall to make sure everyone is enjoying their food) is about to start selling it in stores. The wood is also an important ingredient. Author Calvin Trillin once proclaimed that "if it ain't cooked over wood, it ain't barbecue." So be it, and at D'z they lean heavily on oak with some hickory in small chunks along the way. Not sure whether we ordered the pork rinds or they came with the meal. Whatever (don't you hate it when people say that?) they came seasoned with some of their super secret rub, but saying they're good would be an understatement. Bought an extra order to go. Sauces? You want to know about sauces? Easy; they have one - sort of a combination of vinegar, tomato base, pepper and no one will tell anyone else what else. The place itself, a trailer alongside a poll hall dining room is the sort if place you'd expect to find some southern charm (lot of signs for various politicians) and good southern 'cue - and we weren't disappointed. Four stars and a promise to stop by again when we're anywhere close. read more

We ordered the 2 BBQ Pork sandwiches and cole slaw special. I also ordered the small bbq platter to go. The lovely lady packaged it up perfectly for travel as I was bringing it home to our family. Everything was fairly priced for the quality. The sandwiches were cooked and stacked to perfection! The slaw was super creamy but not overpowering. The meat, so tender and well spiced. If we didn't live 6 hours away, we'd be here every week! This will be our go to when passing through SC Oh, forgot to mention. We grabbed a bag of boiled peanuts for my mom. The BBQ is good but not great and sides nothing special. As my partner said of his BBQ pork sandwich, "I've had worse, but I've had better". I ordered the rib basket which came with fries and coleslaw. The three ribs were meaty but on the small size with a thin somewhat bland BBQ sauce. The fries were the frozen crinkle style but served piping hot and cole slaw was fine. They have canned drinks only, so I could not get the iced tea hit I was craving since we were in our way back from PA. The owners nice and friendly. The place itself is in on the dive side, which I don't mind if the food is great. Prices are fair for food ordered. Food 3 - Food is good but nothing out of the ordinary, no sauces other than what was slathered on the ribs. Atmosphere 2 You have the option to eat outside on the side of the road or in what I would describe in a pool hall with a couple tables. Note - The 2nd is for the pool tables. I was looking for a place to eat on my Way to Florida and was tired of all the crappy fast food along the way. This place was about 10 min off of 95 but worth the slight detour. It was just a roadside place with a few tables outside and a few inside a separate eating area. You order outside and bring it to your seat yourself. The bbq pork and beef brisket sandwiches were amazing despite the buns that hot soggy pretty quickly.
