This BBQ shack is what I've been looking for during my business trips of he last 18 months - a roadside, classic with authentic food. I was hooked when I saw the big letters on a sign - BBQ. A gravel lot, wooden building, open air gazebo and a trailer where the food is prepared. The height of simple southern BBQ that I've been searching for. I called this my "sketchy bbq quest", used in the most loving and endearing way. I wanted REAL BBQ, and DZ didn't disappoint. The menu was simple, but each style could be paired with a basket of fries and slaw, or ordered as just a sandwich. I was delighted to find my favorite style, beef brisket. Our group sat in the side building, I wish it had been a bit warmer so we could use the open air gazebo seating and listen to the cars drive by. Man, it was good. The brisket didn't disappoint, with a good smoky taste that wasn't overdone, and a sauce that zinged enough to still be on my lips an hour later. Owner was nice and reportedly was the chef, builder, janitor, lawn man and advertising.... obviously crushing it as a business man!... We will be back on our next trip! read more

Very simple place with BBQ sandwiches. The very personable owner, Michael, serves up the food from a food truck. We then ate outside at the picnic tables. Michael makes a variety of home made sauces. Delicious Roadside BBQ The smell is noticable first thing, and then you see the arrow sign pointing towards the BBQ Barrell, this place is either going to be terrible or fantastic - and it's the latter. You order in the little black food truck/trailer and try to keep from drooling from the smell coming from the smoker. We ordered the BBQ Sandwich with Slaw and the 3 Rib Plate. Both were scrumptious, the BBQ sauce is red/vinegar base and doesn't need much, but the slaw is a nice tangy and creamy accompaniment. The ribs fall off the bone and the fries were crunchy and warm. Pretty good. I prefer to be able to taste the meat, but it was already covered in sauce. Don't get me wrong, the sauce is quite yummy, but I want to try the meat. I feel like the combo basket wasn't a good deal. My daughter got a brisket sandwich. My brisket combo had the same exact sandwich as hers but with coleslaw and beans since they were out of fries. I could have gotten the sandwich with coleslaw and a side of baked beans. It would have been the same food and I'd have saved $2. Seems to me that a combo should be a better deal, not worse. After driving on this back road nearly a hundred times, I've always wanted to stop and try the BBQ here and yesterday I finally did ! Well praise the lord and pass the brisket ! I ordered the beef brisket combo with fries and slaw, and a pork BBQ sandwich for the homeless guy over on Hwy 76 3 miles away. The brisket was perfectly smoked, piled crazy high on an oversized bun with a side of creamy slaw, and a huge portion of crinkle fries. I could not finish but only half of this plate. Texas has got nothing on this brisket, and since I gave away the pork BBQ combo I'll have to return to try that one. The beef brisket combo was $12.99 but given the portion size, totally worth it. First time eating at D'z BBQ today. It was well worth the drive "all the way" from Florence. I sampled the pulled pork and beef brisket. The pork was chopped with sauce. A very generous portion on a large burger bun. Bun was fluffy and fresh. I was mainly wanting to dig into the BBQ so used the fork and skipped most of the bun. I'm on the fence about the slaw. If I had to guess, I'd say it was Sam's Club bought. Which is to say it tasted nice and went with the BBQ well. But it by itself was just mediocre. Back to the pork, it had a small but tasteful smoke to it. Very lean chop with zero gristle I saw. The D'z sauce is a darker red vinegar base and as others mentioned had a slight kick. I would stop shirt off calling it spicy, however, and I have a very low spice tolerance. The brisket is cooked well and sliced very thin, almost deli thin. I also asked for mine too be chopped. The brisket was very lean with very little fat, I know this is some what abnormal, but this is exactly how I prefer mine. I started here and enjoyed every bite. While I imagine it is cooked in the same smoker as the pork. It did not have near the smoke taste (which was mild) as the pork. The brisket was also sauced with D'z sauce which complimented the brisket and had a slightly different flavor than the pork. Mine came out piping hot and might be the best brisket I've had outside of Texas. The location and atmosphere is 100% rural South Carolina. This feels like a hidden gem trapped in time warp off of the beaten path. Order at the food truck trailer and eat in the bar. Pool tables and motorcycles and signs of an almost forgotten produce stand. If your looking for high class refined establishment, the venue here is not for you. If you are looking for quality cooked fresh BBQ with a unique local twist D'zs should be a must stop. I'll be back for sure, I read to many reviews about the ribs to not come back and try them. We stopped at D'Z Pit BBQ on the way to the beach today. Inexplicably, Waze took us off of US 76 for a few miles, otherwise, we never would have seen D'z's. We smelled smoke when we passed by this quaint location, which includes a food truck. After a quick discussion, we turned around and went back. We bought a pound of the chopped pork BBQ, and my only regrets are that we did not buy several pounds and that we didn't try anything else. The pork was chopped so finely, it was almost a paste. We received two small containers of what I guess is the house sauce, which was thin and slightly spicy. We added some of the sauce when we heated the que for dinner sandwiches, and it enhanced the pork without overpowering it. The pork was lean, and there was no gristle at all. The meat had a pronounced smoky flavor, but it was not too strong. This was some of the best pork BBQ we have had in a very long time, proper since we smoked a pork shoulder last May. I wish we had tried the brisket! Maybe next time. If your on the way to or from the Myrtle Beach area, you won't regret stopping at D'Z's Pit BBQ. We will definitely be making this a regular detour now. read more

I have driven past here a few times lately and on my last trip home from the beach I decided to pull over and give it a try. The BBQ is very good and for the price you get a good serving. We got three sandwiches and mine came with a side of slaw and fries. Everyone liked the sandwiches and the fries had a seasoning on them that was really good, the slaw was good, but I don't like mine so chunky. Ate on property passing through. I had the Pork bbq sandwich with slaw and it was so soggy and wet that bottom of the bun fell apart and couldn't be eaten. Pork is minced and was tender and had good smoke and flavor.Slaw tasted store bought. Beans tasted like baked beans from a can. Fries were just unseasoned frozen crinkle fries dropped in a fryer but the fryer grease needs changed and you can tell. Homemade ketchup and sauces were tasty. My companion said the brisket tasted like lunch meat with sauce on top. Overall it wasn't worth the stop. I'm pretty excited about this place! Every time in the last 2 years or so that we have passed in in route to Myrtle Beach, we have talked about stopping. This time, we did- and I'm hooked. If you blink, you will miss this dive. We got 2 pulled bbq sandwiches and a side of fries. There was probably a 1/2 lb of bbq on each sandwich. Sandwiches and fries were great. The bbq sauce is a red vinegar type sauce and it has some kick! My husband didn't even look at the menu when he ordered or he probably would have gotten ribs as well. He liked the BBQ so much that we plan to stop on the way to the beach next time to get some to go! It's a dive, as I mentioned before. Set off the side of the old Marion Highway outside of Florence. Its a food truck with a smoker set up in front of a bar. The inside of the place however was spotless. I ran in quickly to use the restroom. Bar in the back, with two pool tables and some old motorcycles as decor. The two guys that were there working were very nice. If you find yourself on I95 or headed to the Myrtle Beach area, stop in here and give it a try! read more
