    Chicken Satay
    Eddie T.

Food: 3 Service: 3 Ambiance: 3 Tip: Cash Only I gave this place a 3 because it's not the best Thai I have ever had in terms of food, service or ambiance. That said, the experience was good. This place has been here a very long time because of the student and local faithful. The family that runs this place is very sweet and hospitable, but they are understaffed. We came in shortly after the lunch hour and it took a good 10 minutes to get served drinks. They have stopped serving several of their items, but they remain on the menu so be aware. We had the Chicken Satay, Panang Curry with Chicken, and Chicken Pad Thai. The Chicken Satay was a little dry. The Panang Curry needed more coconut milk, and the Chicken Pad Thai was perfect.

    Drunken Noodles (Pad Kee Mao)

Easily my favorite restaurant on state street. The soups are fragrant and delicious. The stir fry dishes show great use of wok-hay. The curry is just fine in my opinion. A warning though. If you come during peak hours, especially with a group, be prepared to wait up to 25-40 minutes for your food as it's just one guy making the food. Coming multiple times will be rewarding as he will remember you and likely also your preferences in how you like your food made. I recommend the Kao Poun (a type of coconut noodle soup), Drunken Noodles, and Tom Yum noodle soup. If you ask for anything spicy it will actually be rather spicy. Vegetarians and Vegans also have a lot of good options here.

I took a group here for lunch and while we should have called ahead, we ended up have a great and delicious lunch! Go to the red banner on state street that says "Rising Sons" and try this place. The food is fresh and delicious, so much flavor. We shared veggie and pork egg rolls, rangoons, pad thai, curry, soup. Everything was absolutely delicious. The windows were open so air could flow through and it's bigger on the inside than it looks from the street. They also do pickup/carry out, which I recommend too!

Rising Sons is allowing indoor seating as of December 2021. My friend always raves about this place and it did not disappoint! I got the Panang Curry w/ tofu, and my buds got the Pad See Ew w/ chicken and the Tom Kha. The dishes all look so appetizing, but guys, the SMELL. The aroma is just as enticing as the beauty of each dish. The Panang Curry sports a gorgeous, orange color and the Tom Kha looks so well seasoned. The ol' saying "If it looks good, it must taste good" definitely rings true here, because the authentic flavors match up with their irresistible looks. The portions are also hearty and filling, allowing for at least 2 meals from each serving. If you get any curry, keep in mind they do not have brown rice and the rice:curry ratio is a bit off, as seen in the image. But you can always take some rice to go as the curry portion is definitely made with leftovers in mind! The one downside to Rising Sons is that the service is a bit hard to swallow. The owner is an incredibly hard worker and seems to run the show all on his own. Yes, that means the man who seats you at your table is also going to cook your food and ring up your bill. As a result of this, everything takes quite a bit longer and he doesn't have time for many pleasantries as you can imagine. So maybe cut out more space in your schedule for lunch/dinner if you were thinking of coming here, because the food is worth it!

Rising Sons is an awesome Thai restaurant with a bit of an identity crisis. It's Lao/Thai, but it calls itself a deli, and the decor is left over from the soul food restaurant that used to be in the space. All this combined makes up the charm of the place! I highly recommend the crab rangoons - they're my favorite crab rangoons in Madison, they have tons of filling. I also really like the squash curry. They give you plenty of veggies and rice to go with it! One complaint is that it is cash only, so plan for that!

Not the best Thai/Vietnamese but decent for Madison. Also the prices are extremely cheap but they only take cash. Go to Walgreens and get cash back. I got the coconut curry soup with veggies. It was simple yet delicious. The veggies were definitely from a bag though. My friend got the soy sauce pho which was okay - a bit salty in my taste. But at 10 dollars can't complain!

*Note: they DO NOT take credit or debit cards. CASH or CHECKS ONLY* Love, love, love the food here! If you are on State St. in Madison, WI by campus and have a craving for authentic Laos/Thai food then you should definitely stop by here. The atmosphere is a quaint little spot with regular tables and diner-style bar seating in front of the kitchen. Cute and clean. The Food: Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup- 5/5 this dish was flavorful and packed just the right amount of sweet, sour, and spicy. Definitely a must try! Papaya Salad - 4/5 so very tasty. Perfect mix of spicy, sweet and sour as well Garlic pork - 4/5 flavorful and cooked just right Crab Rangoon - 4/5 loved every bite of it! We come here every time we get to Madison. We will always return to this restaurant when we come here! They have so many authentic recipes on the menu that are real Lao staples. Try the mok gai, mok pa, or galapao.

Pad Thai with shrimp and curry.

Visited on a weekend night in the late summer around dinner time. Ordered Pad Thai with shrimp and a curry with chicken. Pros: outside dining is very nice. Secluded with exposed brick and shade. Prices were very reasonable. Cons: The food wasn't great. The sauce on the Pad Thai was odd. The curry was a little better but still not something I would order again. The service was very inattentive.

Pad Thai and pad pet basil w tofu

Their pad Thai tastes exactly like pad Thai. Their pad pet basil (with tofu) tasted exactly like pad pet basil (with tofu). Both were amazing. I need to know how to make the tofu. The candy was COMPLIMENTARY! Everything about this experience gave me chills! Best eaten at a park at sunset.

Let's get the important point out of the way first. ~~ Cash only ~~ This was one of the first places I visited when I initially set food in Madison years and years ago, so it brings back many fond memories. I remember being impressed with their Penang Green Curry. As for all their curries, you get a choice of tofu, meat or shrimp (shrimps come at an extra). For the green curry there're eggplant and bamboo shoots, some of my favorite ingredients in my curry. It also comes with generous serving of rice to go with the rich curry gravy. Over the course of several years we've been through almost the entire menu. I like their curries, noodle soups, tom yum and drunken noodles. But sad to say I think things have changed somewhat, on my recent trips I've been less impressed with Rising Sons. Maybe the saying that your appetite changes over time is true? Or maybe there are a lot of newer options that are more refreshing popping up in town over the years. Not imagining myself going back unless things change back to the way they were before.

    Pad Thai
    Liz Y.

My husband and I decided to check out this place yesterday and it wasn't too bad. The pad thai was normal, alittle too much tamarind flavor but not bad. The husband had pho and it was alright. Not as flavorful though. The papaya salad was what got me. I loved it! It had a perfect blend of sweetness and sourness. I am a huge papaya salad lover and it was amazing. We do like that they had variety of food. We would like to come back and try the curries and soups. Their service was okay. They didn't check up on us during our meal and didn't say much to us but that's usually how Asian resturants are so we are use to it. Just thought I'd point that out in case you were expecting amazing customer service.

Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodle) at Rising Sons Deli. Delicious.

The people working at the cart were really nice and accommodating, and were happy to modify any dish they could for ingredients that you can't or don't eat. The first thing I tried was the squash curry, which was a really generous portion size for $7, consisting of rice topped with a rich coconut milk-based curry filled with chicken, kabocha, and zucchini. It was really filling and tasty. But the real winner from the cart after a few visits was the avocado spring roll, which was $3.50 and the size of a burrito. It was basically a giant fresh roll filled with avocado, lettuce, cabbage, mint, rice noodles, cucumber, carrot, and peanut sauce. We got the medium spicy sauce, and it had a fantastic kick to it. Still can't believe something so large was only a few dollars, as it was such a great deal. Definitely worth trying this cart if you're looking for something to eat on campus.

The rice is soggy and the bamboo shoot seem like it comes out of a can. 2) hot and sour soup lack has some flavor. Still missing the sour part. Im addition, it is very thick, I think it has too much starch added to it. 3) the broken rice is not made with broken rice. It's made with the same rice as everything else. The bbq pork is drive, again lack seasoning. The fish sauce is so sweet. It's missing the salty part and flavorfulness. I think 3 stars is fair.

Just a simple, down-to-earth place to get some Thai food, and some pretty good food at that. For lack of a picture of what I personally ate, I'll post the pic I got of my friend's Guey Tuey Kee Mao, or what may be more described as "drunken noodles." It was pretty good and authentic - just the right balance of saltiness and sweetness in the sauce, and the chicken in it was done nicely. I personally ordered the Pad-Z-You (probably more towards pad see ew) with beef, and that was also quite good. Extremely straightforward dish that was executed well. Overall, this was a nice place for a casual dinner. The server was also quite friendly too. The food is definitely not "mind-blowing," but it certainly scratches the itch for good Thai food.

It had carrots in it which I had never seen before and it was incredibly dry and sweet. They also didn't have sticky rice I could order unless it was the sticky rice for dessert with coconut milk in it which I didn't want. It also costed me extra for cucumber and lettuce which should automatically come with it (who eats Larb by itself???). As far as ambiance goes, it was kind of dark in there but the decor and atmosphere was okay. The service was very nice but they did forget some of our food at one point. I really like the server who brought our food though; she was charming and enjoyable to talk to. Overall, I see great potential with this place and really only wish the best. The workers and owners here at Hot 'n Spicy are very friendly and the larb siin, thum mak hoong, siin savanh, sai oua (medium), combo crispy lard nar, and sesame balls are the bomb! The larb's bitter and sour, with the beef tasting tender and juicy, just like how I like it and how I make it. The thum has the same fishy, pungent taste that I love, with super fresh papaya and tomatoes. These were the two dishes I ordered when I first checked out this restaurant in April 2022, and both taste just like how I remembered them. The siin savanh's flavorful (with hints of fish sauce and soy sauce), crisp, and tender. The sai oua's super juicy and tender, with spices, and is of the sweet variety (not the sour variety). The jeow som that comes with it is super garlicky and fishy, with a slight hint of spice, just as I'd want it like and how I'd make it myself. The lard nar has crispy noodles that were just right in terms of crisp and flavor (you can feel the crispy while still tasting the flavor of the wide rice noodles) and the protein's also the right level of tenderness (not tough at all)! I think the sauce uses more soy sauce than I'd like, as it's a bit heavier than what I make and see at most other restaurants, but that's no big deal. The sesame balls are warm, the perfect level of chewy, and generously filled. The bean filling's so tasty. They also aren't oily in the slightest! The (regular) sticky rice, purple, is fresh and is a generous option for the price. I wish the food were spicier, as I used to order this same spice level (their spiciest level) years back and found myself sweating and having a runny nose. I hope I might be able to order spicier than their spiciest level next time! I ordered a lot and they were in the middle of a lunch rush during my visit, but all my dishes came at a reasonable time. Also, my waitress, Alyssa (not sure if I spelled her name correctly since I didn't ask her how she spells it), made sure to check on me and other tables every few minutes to see how we were doing! After my meal, I love how Alyssa gave me some stickers, just as I love how I got to speak a little bit with the kitchen staff (as they were less busy by the time I was leaving)! I found it funny how some of them thought I was Kevin, a family friend of theirs. It was this amazing combination of food and service, which reminded me of my family and simpler times, that was the reason this restaurant was my go-to restaurant when I was a law school student at UW-Madison years back (even though this restaurant was out of my way and there were so many other Lao/Southeast Asian restaurants closer to where I was living). My visits here back then helped more than I could ever describe with combating all the stress I had (because law school was so difficult) and the loneliness I had (because I had no luck making friends at the time). Sadly, they didn't have Thai iced tea during my visit, so that'll be a reason for me to come back! I'll have to get their pho next time, as that's also a dish I ordered years ago and loved! Btw, this restaurant will soon be moving from inside of Viet Hoa Market to Mishqui Peruvian Bistro (same plaza), which will allow them to have more tables/seating and more hours, so I'll definitely be back after they've moved!
