    Chicken Satay
    Eddie T.

Food: 3 Service: 3 Ambiance: 3 Tip: Cash Only I gave this place a 3 because it's not the best Thai I have ever had in terms of food, service or ambiance. That said, the experience was good. This place has been here a very long time because of the student and local faithful. The family that runs this place is very sweet and hospitable, but they are understaffed. We came in shortly after the lunch hour and it took a good 10 minutes to get served drinks. They have stopped serving several of their items, but they remain on the menu so be aware. We had the Chicken Satay, Panang Curry with Chicken, and Chicken Pad Thai. The Chicken Satay was a little dry. The Panang Curry needed more coconut milk, and the Chicken Pad Thai was perfect.

    Drunken Noodles (Pad Kee Mao)

Easily my favorite restaurant on state street. The soups are fragrant and delicious. The stir fry dishes show great use of wok-hay. The curry is just fine in my opinion. A warning though. If you come during peak hours, especially with a group, be prepared to wait up to 25-40 minutes for your food as it's just one guy making the food. Coming multiple times will be rewarding as he will remember you and likely also your preferences in how you like your food made. I recommend the Kao Poun (a type of coconut noodle soup), Drunken Noodles, and Tom Yum noodle soup. If you ask for anything spicy it will actually be rather spicy. Vegetarians and Vegans also have a lot of good options here.

I took a group here for lunch and while we should have called ahead, we ended up have a great and delicious lunch! Go to the red banner on state street that says "Rising Sons" and try this place. The food is fresh and delicious, so much flavor. We shared veggie and pork egg rolls, rangoons, pad thai, curry, soup. Everything was absolutely delicious. The windows were open so air could flow through and it's bigger on the inside than it looks from the street. They also do pickup/carry out, which I recommend too!

Rising Sons is allowing indoor seating as of December 2021. My friend always raves about this place and it did not disappoint! I got the Panang Curry w/ tofu, and my buds got the Pad See Ew w/ chicken and the Tom Kha. The dishes all look so appetizing, but guys, the SMELL. The aroma is just as enticing as the beauty of each dish. The Panang Curry sports a gorgeous, orange color and the Tom Kha looks so well seasoned. The ol' saying "If it looks good, it must taste good" definitely rings true here, because the authentic flavors match up with their irresistible looks. The portions are also hearty and filling, allowing for at least 2 meals from each serving. If you get any curry, keep in mind they do not have brown rice and the rice:curry ratio is a bit off, as seen in the image. But you can always take some rice to go as the curry portion is definitely made with leftovers in mind! The one downside to Rising Sons is that the service is a bit hard to swallow. The owner is an incredibly hard worker and seems to run the show all on his own. Yes, that means the man who seats you at your table is also going to cook your food and ring up your bill. As a result of this, everything takes quite a bit longer and he doesn't have time for many pleasantries as you can imagine. So maybe cut out more space in your schedule for lunch/dinner if you were thinking of coming here, because the food is worth it!

Rising Sons is an awesome Thai restaurant with a bit of an identity crisis. It's Lao/Thai, but it calls itself a deli, and the decor is left over from the soul food restaurant that used to be in the space. All this combined makes up the charm of the place! I highly recommend the crab rangoons - they're my favorite crab rangoons in Madison, they have tons of filling. I also really like the squash curry. They give you plenty of veggies and rice to go with it! One complaint is that it is cash only, so plan for that!

*Note: they DO NOT take credit or debit cards. CASH or CHECKS ONLY* Love, love, love the food here! If you are on State St. in Madison, WI by campus and have a craving for authentic Laos/Thai food then you should definitely stop by here. The atmosphere is a quaint little spot with regular tables and diner-style bar seating in front of the kitchen. Cute and clean. The Food: Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup- 5/5 this dish was flavorful and packed just the right amount of sweet, sour, and spicy. Definitely a must try! Papaya Salad - 4/5 so very tasty. Perfect mix of spicy, sweet and sour as well Garlic pork - 4/5 flavorful and cooked just right Crab Rangoon - 4/5 loved every bite of it! We come here every time we get to Madison. We will always return to this restaurant when we come here! They have so many authentic recipes on the menu that are real Lao staples. Try the mok gai, mok pa, or galapao.

Not the best Thai/Vietnamese but decent for Madison. Also the prices are extremely cheap but they only take cash. Go to Walgreens and get cash back. I got the coconut curry soup with veggies. It was simple yet delicious. The veggies were definitely from a bag though. My friend got the soy sauce pho which was okay - a bit salty in my taste. But at 10 dollars can't complain!

Pad Thai with shrimp and curry.

Visited on a weekend night in the late summer around dinner time. Ordered Pad Thai with shrimp and a curry with chicken. Pros: outside dining is very nice. Secluded with exposed brick and shade. Prices were very reasonable. Cons: The food wasn't great. The sauce on the Pad Thai was odd. The curry was a little better but still not something I would order again. The service was very inattentive.

Pad Thai and pad pet basil w tofu

Their pad Thai tastes exactly like pad Thai. Their pad pet basil (with tofu) tasted exactly like pad pet basil (with tofu). Both were amazing. I need to know how to make the tofu. The candy was COMPLIMENTARY! Everything about this experience gave me chills! Best eaten at a park at sunset.

Let's get the important point out of the way first. ~~ Cash only ~~ This was one of the first places I visited when I initially set food in Madison years and years ago, so it brings back many fond memories. I remember being impressed with their Penang Green Curry. As for all their curries, you get a choice of tofu, meat or shrimp (shrimps come at an extra). For the green curry there're eggplant and bamboo shoots, some of my favorite ingredients in my curry. It also comes with generous serving of rice to go with the rich curry gravy. Over the course of several years we've been through almost the entire menu. I like their curries, noodle soups, tom yum and drunken noodles. But sad to say I think things have changed somewhat, on my recent trips I've been less impressed with Rising Sons. Maybe the saying that your appetite changes over time is true? Or maybe there are a lot of newer options that are more refreshing popping up in town over the years. Not imagining myself going back unless things change back to the way they were before.

My husband and I decided to check out this place yesterday and it wasn't too bad. The pad thai was normal, alittle too much tamarind flavor but not bad. The husband had pho and it was alright. Not as flavorful though. The papaya salad was what got me. I loved it! It had a perfect blend of sweetness and sourness. I am a huge papaya salad lover and it was amazing. We do like that they had variety of food. We would like to come back and try the curries and soups. Their service was okay. They didn't check up on us during our meal and didn't say much to us but that's usually how Asian resturants are so we are use to it. Just thought I'd point that out in case you were expecting amazing customer service.

Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodle) at Rising Sons Deli. Delicious.

They had a…read moreregular menu that included curries, noodles, and salads, but also a rotating daily menu, all at very affordable prices. The people working at the cart were really nice and accommodating, and were happy to modify any dish they could for ingredients that you can't or don't eat. The first thing I tried was the squash curry, which was a really generous portion size for $7, consisting of rice topped with a rich coconut milk-based curry filled with chicken, kabocha, and zucchini. It was really filling and tasty. But the real winner from the cart after a few visits was the avocado spring roll, which was $3.50 and the size of a burrito. It was basically a giant fresh roll filled with avocado, lettuce, cabbage, mint, rice noodles, cucumber, carrot, and peanut sauce. We got the medium spicy sauce, and it had a fantastic kick to it. Still can't believe something so large was only a few dollars, as it was such a great deal. Definitely worth trying this cart if you're looking for something to eat on campus.

Not that flavorful so if you're looking for the sour and strong taste, wouldn't recommend this. Pan fried Pork dumplings - it's fake pork but I can't even tell the difference! The sauce is great and not super salty. Egg roll with spring roll - unique item but didn't stand out. Egg roll gave a crunch but not much taste Spring roll - always a solid choice. The sauce is amazing! Umami and perfect amount of salty. Coconut sticky rice - more like a soup/congee texture. It was hot and the coconut rice overpowered the mango so it didn't have a cohesive taste. 2 individual bathrooms. Parking is free but difficult to find. Would recommend making a reservation. It had carrots in it which I had never seen before and it was incredibly dry and sweet. They also didn't have sticky rice I could order unless it was the sticky rice for dessert with coconut milk in it which I didn't want. It also costed me extra for cucumber and lettuce which should automatically come with it (who eats Larb by itself???). They truly live up to their name "Hot-N-Spicy" and the cultural significance of the Thai chili pepper which is a food symbol of Thailand which often represents hospitality, warmth, and resilience! They bring all the spice and don't hold back! If you are not used to spice/spicy hot dishes, I suggest you start at level one spice and work your way up. They will ask you on dishes made with chili peppers what spice level you want 1-4 and can even make it hotter also! Hot-N-Spicy is genuinely unique because they offer Issan food dishes and flavors that is uniquely from the Issan/Isan Northeast region of Thailand that is heavily influenced by Lao and Cambodian flavors with the use of heat, fresh herbs, and the heavy use of fermented fish sauce that brings different flavors different from other regions of Thailand. As an update, Hot-N-Spicy used to be located in the back of the Viet Hoa Market. It is now located next door from the market in a larger space in the same strip mall that allows for a more comfortable sit-down seating experience of a full restaurant. I have tried almost everything on their menu and have never been disappointed! For appetizers, I love their angel wings which are deboned chicken wings stuffed with chicken, carrot, and bean thread noodles fried to pure crispy perfection! Their most popular selling appetizers are their amazingly addictively delicious crab rangoons! Their chicken satay is also a must try! I also recommend trying their beef jerky which is so delicious, it often sells out quickly during the day! Their main entrees are so outstanding, it is hard just to order one entree! My absolute favorite that I recommend is their steak Laab which is the best Laab I have had in Madison! It is heavily influenced with Isaan flavors/culture with minced beef, tripe, red onion, cilantro, mint, fresh lime juice, rice powder, fish sauce and scallions. I love the beef steak Laab because it is unlike anything you will ever taste with so much flavor from a combination of flavors with hint of sour with the lime, salty/umami/pungence from the fish sauce, balanced with refreshing different herbs, texture with the tripe, while the toasted rice powder gives this dish a tiny bit of crunch/texture that gives a subtle nutty flavor! This dish is a minced meat salad traditionally eaten with your hands and sticky rice/vegetables like cucumber. I also really enjoy their Pad Thai, Pho, and Crispy Noodle Lad Na! Your visit wouldn't be complete without quenching your thirst with either their Thai iced coffee/tea! Hot-N-Spicy remains at the top of my list for Thai/Lao cuisine!
