We were visiting Madison recently and found this restaurant through Yelp. It was a Wed. Morning I liked the vibe right when I entered. Bright cheerful charming decor. I was skeptical when I realized we had to order our food at the counter vs. being seated and served. I didn't like having to pay gratuity prior to being provided any service. We ordered Chilaquiles and the French Toast. The chilaquiles was not authentic but we really liked it! Would definitely recommend. Same for the French toast! Yummy. The fruit was so sweet and fresh. The almonds were a nice touch. 5 Stars for the food. I liked that the water was self service. I liked that take out boxes were readily available. I didn't have to ask or wait in either case. I think the only negative of our visit was having to find parking. read more

Tried Marigold Kitchen while downtown and had a great experience overall. I sat outside on a beautiful day, which made for such a nice breakfast café atmosphere. The service was absolutely great, and the restaurant has a lively, charming vibe. It does tend to get busy, so I'd recommend arriving at a reasonable time. I ordered the French toast, which was clearly their own elevated take on the classic. The flavors were good, but the texture was a little different than I expected and threw me off slightly. It felt more like a chic, creative version of French toast rather than the traditional style, which is the only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five. Discovered this spot while my little sister was in town visiting and now have already been back with plans to keep returning. I've ordered the same thing both times because I loved it so much- the Three Grain & Tempeh Bowl. It's so fresh and delicious, filling without making you feel over-full and gross. She had the Mushroom & Gouda Omelette and also very much enjoyed. The seating space is small so you can definitely run into a wait during busy times, but service moves fast! You'll order at the counter and be handed a number to take to your table, where the food will be delivered. During busy times I've seen them try to help coordinate seating arrangements but it is otherwise largely a seat yourself sort of place. This place is a very cute brunch spot and has pretty quick service! You get in line when you come in, order at the counter, and then sit down and they'll bring it out. The atmosphere is very nice with cute decor and a decent amount of seating. I ordered the Cinnamon Toast Crunch latte, which was pretty tasty! This was my second time having breakfast here and it's been excellent both times. I got the mint latte to drink which was fantastic-- they make their mint syrup in house. To eat I got the avocado toast which was slightly above average in my opinion, though the presentation was pretty. The service was incredible. Every staff member I interacted with seemed cheerful and eager to help. The table next to mine had something wrong with their food and the staff immediately took the blame, remade it for them, and offered them a pastry. This place just gets better with time. It was nearly a decade later for my second visit and I was so grateful to find a restaurant that offers nutritional and fun recipes for breakfast. My sister and I popped in on a Saturday morning and we're greeted by the friendly staff. I ordered the Tempeh grain bowl with roasted vegetables and it did not disappoint. I wish more restaurants would get creative with using ingredients like tempeh and tofu to make eating out and finding healthy food, a little easier. This spot is bustling with good energy, colorful decor, and a menu that makes it hard to choose just one dish. So, I didn't choose just one dish... I may have thought bad things about Madison prematurely. I mean, here for an event but who really travels to Madison? But here we were in downtown in a beautiful day with a gorgeous lake-side path and finding ourselves enjoying it. Stopped here for breakfast, shocked in our research how many vegetarian options were available for my wife. Here you could get tofu eggs and tempeh added to your dishes. I got their chilaquiles and gluten free lemon poppyseed pancakes (they had GF toast but their only savory option was this or a coconut thing). The entree was delicious, not too spicy unless you bite into too many jalapeños, and the shredded chicken was great. Could have used a second egg but I'm a big boy so maybe it's just me. I was also surprised by how much I liked the pancakes. It was a gamble as I don't like things too lemony and while you could definitely taste the lemon, it was still very good. And the pancakes, for being gluten free, were fluffy and soft and great. Had a regular coffee and while it was strong, it was just coffee. It gets very busy at peak meal times to plan accordingly. Marigold Kitchen is situated in the heart of downtown Madison and is a stellar local spot that clearly has the heart of Madison and for good reason. I will say that it took me a few trips to Madison before I popped into Marigold Kitchen, and the reason it took so long is because the line to get into Marigold gets real deep real quick...and I never had time! But now, I will be sure to make time. With that being said, do not get discouraged when you see the line of folks circling the block...yes, the line is long...but they are efficient and keep things moving...plus it is worth the wait. The way things work here is a first come first serve situation at the door. There are no dedicated servers, you wait in line until there is space, then you head up to the counter where you order and then find your table. Once the food is ready, they bring it out and you enjoy. So, it is a combination of casual/counter service and sit-down dining...and it works. We got lucky enough to grab a few seats at the bar, which was convenient and also gave us a front row seat to all the action behind the counter and in the kitchen. The menu is a healthy mix of all varieties of dishes, but all with the essence of a fresh and local flare. We came in shortly after opening, so went with breakfast. I went classic pancakes sided with breakfast potatoes and sausage links. My buddy went with the breakfast sandwich and field greens. To wash things down we both went with a cold brew, one to enjoy during and one to go! Both our meals were delicious, simple, yet complex...and prepared well! Their menu is dominated by breakfast and brunch, but they do offer a small selection of lunch style plates and even a few cocktails. If you are willing to wait in the line to get into marigold I fully believe it's worth the wait! I went with some friends for brunch and waited about 30 minutes in line. They took our order in line and by the time we got seated our food was ready within 10 minutes. I was very impressed with the quality of food and timing with the amount of guest they were serving. Visited this morning for the first time and can't believe I've never been here before! While they don't take reservations and parking can be a challenge, everything goes so quickly and is run so smoothly. We arrived and the place was full except for two counter bar seats. The hostess offered those to us and we accepted. She gave us our table number and we ordered at the counter. Even though it was full, the staff were so cheerful and pleasant. We grabbed waters from the water station and sat down. It was so cute inside although it is a little loud when full since it's so tiny. I ordered a Mexican hot chocolate and the chili poached eggs while my friend ordered a bloody Mary and the chorizo and sweet corn hash omelette. Everything came quickly, so quickly even that our food actually arrived before our drinks. The Mexican hot chocolate was the perfect combination of sweet and spicy, plus the perfect temperature. My eggs were perfect too and I liked that they came with prosciutto, greens, and rosemary bread. I added avocado which was pricy but worth it to have a little more going on on the plate. My friend's bloody Mary and omelette were also great. The bloody Mary was so thick and had really good horseradish, while the omelette was so stuffed that she couldn't eat it all with the potatoes. Our food was excellent and the plates we saw coming out all around us looked amazing as well, so I'd love to come back another time to try more of the menu. We came to marigolds after the farmers market and despite the long line out the door, we were seated within 20 minutes. We each got drinks, and the lattes were very good! I recommend trying their specialty ones, it wasn't too sweet but definitely flavorful. I got the chilaquiles and they were delicious, the French toast looked decadent as well. They also provide menus to look at while you're waiting so you're ready to order when it's your turn. Servers were all very friendly. After brining our food items and coffee, they assisted with boxes and to-go cups. One thing to note is that there isn't really table service. This wasn't an issue or even inconvenience, but something to know prior to dining that is something you are wanting. We all had different items, and loved everything we had.
