My husband and I went here recently because we wanted to try something new and it had decent reviews. Well, we were not impressed. It was a cold day outside and it seems that they need to do some improvements in this place. We were freezing the entire time we were there. Actually had to eat with our jackets on! They had a space heater by our table but it put out zero heat! The place was also pretty dirty. Now for the food review...super basic and bland. Potatoes were kinda hard, omelet bland and pancakes seemed like they came out of a box. The staff was pleasant and the guy who delivered our food was very polite but unfortunately, that's not enough to encourage us to come back. We both really enjoyed the breakfast burritos - the chipotle aioli was awesome. Pancakes were good! The potatoes were subpar and I would've rather not ordered, sadly. Cozy unassuming restaurant in Monona. Stopped in for weekend brunch with a friend who recommended the place. It was extremely busy but we were able to get a table. After deciding what to get, we went up to order and the worker who gave us menus took our order immediately. I wanted to try their Honduran options and ordered the pupusa and baleada. I rushed in to get a sandwich to go and ordered the T.B.A. Sandwich. What an explosion of flavor! Fresh sliced turkey,thick cut bacon with red onion and chipotle aioli added a wonderful combination of flavors. The multigrain bread was perfectly toasted. Monona Bakery is more than a bakery. Aside from various baked goods they also have a pretty robust savory menu which leans towards Honduran and Mexican fair. Everything in samples was good. The flan was rich and well crafted. I was excited to see Morning Buns in the bakery case. My bun was good but a little on the dry side. I really enjoyed the Beleada: Homemade flour tortilla filled with refried beans, scrambled eggs, avocado, cheese, and Honduran cream. For $4.50 this was a great brunch option when paired with a pasty. The staff are friendly and the prices great. The dining room is somewhat lackluster and drafty (was 20 degrees outside). But, you know what, this place is a neighborhood gem and is worth frequenting. read more

A review in two parts, as the restaurant is probably only 2 and a half stars, but the bakery 4 and a half. Restaurant: Pros - Solid breakfast burrito, bean and cheese papusas are amazing Cons - Can be pricy for breakfast depending on what you get (13.50 for an -- IMO -- standard spinach omelet is too damn high, some options aren't good combinations (or perhaps -- don't fit my expectations) I've tried their baledas with chicken and they were fine, and the papusas ran the gamut from amazing (beans and cheese), to run of the mill (most of the others), to the one I didn't care for (Loroco) The breakfast burrito I had the one time I got it was good but also rather run of the mill. Service was fine, the dining area inside is small so it isn't too hard to managed I'd imagine. Ambiance feels a bit busy because it's also a bakery so there's a lot of coming and going but it's not different a feel than any other combination restaurant / bakery. Speaking of the bakery! Bakery: We haven't bought anything here we haven't enjoyed, though obviously bakes vary. Their croissants are good, the raspberry cream cheese croissant being my favorite. Mrs. T can't go here without getting a pineapple danish. You can't go wrong with any of them (unless you don't like the specific filling, then obviously -- you can). Their desserts (and I'm going to pretend raspberry cream cheese croissants are breakfast food) are consistently good with our preferences being for their tuxedo cake slices and eclairs. The only reason the bakery isn't five stars is every once in awhile we get a dry slice (usually brownies or carrot cake). But by "every once in awhile" you can guess (rightly) that the occasional dry slice hasn't kept us from coming back! read more

I dined in for lunch on a Saturday. The place was packed. One orders food and see if a seat gets available during that time. My food took 45 minute to be ready. Fortunately I got a seat by then. Horchata was excellent. Banana soda was just ok. Baleada was my favorite breakfast item. Traditional Honduran breakfast was really good as well. Papusa was ok. I travel to Madison once or twice a year and always come back to this place. They have a wide breakfast/brunch style menu, born and continuing from Honduran food while incorporating classic American breakfast/lunch foods, Mexican, a variety of salads etc., all with generous choices of pastries and tasty coffee drinks. Delicious Honduran dinner! I ordered the Spinach walnut salad with grilled chicken. My husband ordered the Quinoa Power Salad with grilled chicken. We shared a bean and cheese Pupisa and veggie taco. For dessert my husband bought a chocolate brownie. The large dinner salads were made with fresh ingredients. I really enjoyed the pears and strawberries in my salad. Nice balsamic vinaigrette. I've been to Monona Bakery and Eatery before for their pastries and donuts. So good. I dropped in for lunch with a friend on a Friday and ordered the Plato Tipico. I got it with chickens and plantains. Also ordered a pupusa and tres leches cake. So good. So much leftover for another meal. Everything was fresh and made to order. Highly recommend. Let me start by saying I used to love this place and its food and staff,within a year it's at the worst I've ever seen it! This establishment is very filthy and very run down it needs an upgrade desperately. Seating yea good luck they take your order without telling you there's no seating and will not be any for at least 20minutes , you finally get your table and it's sit as soon as you see one open don't wait to be seated or think because you got there before others your next for a table nope it's every person for themselves if you don't jump onto the first dirty table you see you'll loose it to someone else theres no I'm in line for table . After you get your dirty table if you don't ask for it to be cleaned they won't! Food well one chilaquiles plate with champurrado, a plate with bacon and two pancakes cheap bottled orange juice, another plate with two scrambled eggs sausage links and French toast with a cheap bottled orange juice comes out too $72 and then some . The wait for plates to arrive between 20-30 minutes, when the chilaquiles arrived the eggs were wrong from over easy to scrambled I mentioned it to the mean waitress who said well it's what it said I had to tell her well its definitely not what I asked for so grumpy pants to them back , the pancake plate came with strawberries on the side the pancakes were dried from over cooking the strawberries half rotten half bruised the bacon burnt to an extra crisp, the French toast plate well not any better the French toast was black burnt yet raw inside the sausage links dried almost burnt the scrambled eggs also dried over cooked. The chilaquiles plate is give it a 2 out of 10 10 being good 1 being bad. The avocado on the chilaquiles had lots of black on it bruised or old. I'm sorry to have to say this of a place we used to really enjoy ! Some advice to the owner check on your cooks check the place out see how it's doing at all different times you might notice this yourself and to the people who go there and sit for 20minutes an hour after you eat your food be mindful of others who are standing waiting for a table we noticed a lady walk in with a baby she asked for a slice of pie they sold it to her alright but didn't mention to her there was no seats available she stood with her baby and pie while people sat and simply chatted on an empty table , maybe put up a sign asking patrons who finish their meals if they could please give the table to the next person in line when all tables are taken . Stopped in for a snack on a Saturday. Spotted a sign that says "Try our delicious homemade iced tea" (or similar) so I did. The clerk added "I love their iced tea." My expectations were now very high for this iced tea! The 16 oz iced tea came in a plastic cup with a no-straw-needed top. My first sip was super strong. This is not wimpy iced tea. Once I got used to it, I was able to make out a cinnamony flavor. If you like strong iced tea you're going to love this iced tea. The bakery case was full of delicious looking pastries. I settled on an almond croissant and an eclair to share. Both were of generous size. The eclair was smothered in rich chocolate frosting, but I would have liked a bit more cream in the middle. The almond croissant was above average and I would definitely get both items again. read more

It is safe to say that we have fallen in love with Monona Bakery & Eatery. On a whim, I wanted to order breakfast food (pandemic urges) and we discovered this place! We have now ordered from them twice for the full Monona Bakery Home Eatery Experience. The berry crepes from this restaurant...oh my gosh. Every bite is like the best bite of food I've ever had. I cannot rave enough about them. The peach crepes are delicious, but they are almost too sweet? We still ordered them twice. Waffles are an excellent choice and the French toast is insane -- insanely delicious. We have twice gotten the breakfast potatoes as well. We are new to baleadas, but if you order food/eat here, you HAVE to try them. I love them -- it's like a breakfast quesadilla? We really love the food from here and will continue to be regular customers. There's more on their menu I want to try, but I cannot imagine ever placing an order without the berry crepes and a few baleadas, so expanding my selections will be a process. read more

This place has been on our radar since we moved here and it is right down the street from us. We found it strange that a bakery had Mexican and Honduran food until we realized who owned the restaurant. With everything closed for dine-in we opted to try their take-out. It was well run, efficient, and safe. We ordered their enchiladas verde and their Honduran tamales. The cheese enchiladas were very good and included rice and fresh avocado - very nice and a good portion. We had never had this type of tamale before and they were different with peas, potatoes and big chunks of pork. They were very moist. We like them a lot. And how can I forget for dessert we tried their tres leches cake and it was great! Prices were reasonable. When in need of our Mexican fix we will definitely order from them again. read more

Horrible! The Pupsas were ok! Not much flavor. We tried the pork, pork & cheese , cheese and loroco. The curtido and salsa have no flavor. We ordered 2 champurrados that took the over 20 mins to get. We had to ask for them. When they arrived it literally was watered down hot chocolate. When I questioned them they said it was. Which it clearly wasn't I've had many different kinds of champurrados from different regions. They were $5.75 each .... Starbucks are better ! read more
