    Pad Thai with pork
    Dana A.

The food was great. The Gui Chai came first and made us anxious for the incoming dishes. We weren't disappointed. The Tom Ka made us sit back and say, "ah, yes." The Larb and the Pad Thai were very good, too. They have an area that displays traditional Thai items and wall decorations also add to the ambiance. The only negative, which isn't much, is that our server made us wait a bit longer than what I think should be normal. Keep in mind that at no point of my career did I work in a restaurant, so what's normal for me may not be the standard. Nevertheless, I'm a very patient person. Despite any negative, I will gladly return for more. Not only was the good delicious, but the total bill was much lower than we expected. I don't get to Madison often but this restaurant makes me want to find any reason to travel here.

I placed an order online for dinner on a Friday. They said 35 minutes: I showed up 15 minutes late, and it still took them another 20 to get my food ready. I ordered my pad kee mao with the maximum spice level, but it showed zero spicy. The portion size was decent with plenty of beef, but the meat quality was low, the dish was much too tart, and it was lacking on basil. My wife's pad see ew was bland. I don't think I'll be back.

We ordered chicken satay, and dumplings as appetizers. They were delicious. The chicken satay was so juicy. I think it needed the peanut sauce. The chicken itself was not heavily marinated. I guess it was probably you had to it with the sauce. The dumplings were fried very well. There was also an option for you to steam the dumplings instead of fry. As for entrees, I got number 45. My boyfriend got fried rice with pork and his friend got number 41. 41 and 45 were curries. The curries were very creamy due to coconut milk. Our friend asked for spicy level 3 but I think they forgot adding the hot sauce because it was not spicy at all for him. He still enjoyed the curry though. The fried rice was nice as well. As for my order, number 45, it was spicy. I got level 2. I could tolerate it but it was definitely spicier than our friend's curry. I got catfish as the protein. I would not recommend catfish at all because I think they used frozen catfish because you could smell it. The curry had great flavor though. Definitely will come back other dishes.

I wasn't overly impressed by my experience here but it was enough to satisfy the thai craving, particularly in Madison. We were served fairly quickly - the restaurant wasn't crowded on a Friday evening. We ordered the crab rangoon as an appetizer and the pad see ew with tofu and fried rice with shrimp as our entrees. The crab rangoon was well worth the price, we got 3 massive pieces and each was filled with a looot of cream cheese!! The dipping sauce was some sort of house made sauce, not the normal sweet chili that I was expecting. The pad see ew was okay - not my favorite esp since I prefer my noodles to be saucier. But the tofu was done really well! I preferred the fried rice over the noodles tbh and felt like it had more flavor in each bite. The shrimp was plentiful, they def didn't skimp out on that. It did take a while for our server to give us our check before we could leave but overall was satisfied with my experience here.

Delivery Review! I recently ordered from Sa-Bai Thong to deliver to the University Hospital up the street. I placed an ordered online and even though they said earliest deliveries would arrive at 6PM, when I called they were very accommodating to come at 5:45PM since I had a meeting. The hospital can be very complicated, but when driver called, he was super polite and was able to find his way. The food was wrapped very well. All plastic containers and for soups, the containers are wrapped in another plastic bag. Prices are very reasonable too. Food: I ordered the papaya salad, pork larb, and Tom Ka with chicken, all in fire spice level (there are 4 or 5 levels total). All were super delicious! My favorite was the pork larb hands down. The pork was juiced up with citrus-tangy goodness and the fire heat was totally there - I was sniffling and doing the mouth motions, 100% worth! I can't forget the onions and other herbs that really bring it all together into every delicious bite. Would order this for lunch everyday if I could!

This isn't my absolute favorite Thai restaurant in Madison, but I've never had a bad experience here. The food is always tasty, and so many options sound delicious, I have a hard time choosing what to get! My family loves Thai food, and we enjoy Sa-Bai Thong a lot! I'd recommend any of their curries. I will say, the portions aren't huge for the price. However, I think it's worth a visit.

Although basic of me to get the Pad Thai, I still enjoyed it very much! The taste was pretty darn good (4/5) but the portion size was perfect (5/5). It was just enough to fulfill my hunger but not reach to the point of being too full where I couldn't walk/need to take home. Furthermore, I think our server was the owner? Not quite sure but she was so friendly and made the experience so much better (5/5). Lovely ambience and space (4.5/5). Overall I gotta give it a 5/5 for being a wonderful experience for me in Madison! Definitely will come back once more before I leave. P.S. my friend had one of the curries (I forgot which) with coconut milk and it was sooooo good... I might get that next time too

I ordered the following: 1) basil fried rice ($15) 2) hot and sour soup ($5) 3) broken rice with bbq pork ($19) ** Bonus, free egg rolls The price is ok, but the portion is small. 1) basil fried rice barely had any basil flavor, the broccoli took away any flavor left. The rice is soggy and the bamboo shoot seem like it comes out of a can. 2) hot and sour soup lack has some flavor. Still missing the sour part. Im addition, it is very thick, I think it has too much starch added to it. 3) the broken rice is not made with broken rice. It's made with the same rice as everything else. The bbq pork is drive, again lack seasoning. The fish sauce is so sweet. It's missing the salty part and flavorfulness. I think 3 stars is fair.

Just a simple, down-to-earth place to get some Thai food, and some pretty good food at that. For lack of a picture of what I personally ate, I'll post the pic I got of my friend's Guey Tuey Kee Mao, or what may be more described as "drunken noodles." It was pretty good and authentic - just the right balance of saltiness and sweetness in the sauce, and the chicken in it was done nicely. I personally ordered the Pad-Z-You (probably more towards pad see ew) with beef, and that was also quite good. Extremely straightforward dish that was executed well. Overall, this was a nice place for a casual dinner. The server was also quite friendly too. The food is definitely not "mind-blowing," but it certainly scratches the itch for good Thai food.

My friend said that the curry was amazing and they definitely want to come again for that. My other friend didn't like the pad Thai that much and had to put a lot of sauce on it. They thought the soup and the spring rolls were decent and didn't have any complaints. Pork Larb is my favorite food and I really didn't enjoy the pork Larb here. It had carrots in it which I had never seen before and it was incredibly dry and sweet. They also didn't have sticky rice I could order unless it was the sticky rice for dessert with coconut milk in it which I didn't want. It also costed me extra for cucumber and lettuce which should automatically come with it (who eats Larb by itself???). As far as ambiance goes, it was kind of dark in there but the decor and atmosphere was okay. The service was very nice but they did forget some of our food at one point. I really like the server who brought our food though; she was charming and enjoyable to talk to. Overall, I see great potential with this place and really only wish the best. With some tweaking and recipe perfection, this could be a good, treasured spot in the area.

The workers and owners here at Hot 'n Spicy are very friendly and the larb siin, thum mak hoong, siin savanh, sai oua (medium), combo crispy lard nar, and sesame balls are the bomb! The larb's bitter and sour, with the beef tasting tender and juicy, just like how I like it and how I make it. The thum has the same fishy, pungent taste that I love, with super fresh papaya and tomatoes. These were the two dishes I ordered when I first checked out this restaurant in April 2022, and both taste just like how I remembered them. The siin savanh's flavorful (with hints of fish sauce and soy sauce), crisp, and tender. The sai oua's super juicy and tender, with spices, and is of the sweet variety (not the sour variety). The jeow som that comes with it is super garlicky and fishy, with a slight hint of spice, just as I'd want it like and how I'd make it myself. The lard nar has crispy noodles that were just right in terms of crisp and flavor (you can feel the crispy while still tasting the flavor of the wide rice noodles) and the protein's also the right level of tenderness (not tough at all)! I think the sauce uses more soy sauce than I'd like, as it's a bit heavier than what I make and see at most other restaurants, but that's no big deal. The sesame balls are warm, the perfect level of chewy, and generously filled. The bean filling's so tasty. They also aren't oily in the slightest! The (regular) sticky rice, purple, is fresh and is a generous option for the price. I wish the food were spicier, as I used to order this same spice level (their spiciest level) years back and found myself sweating and having a runny nose. I hope I might be able to order spicier than their spiciest level next time! I ordered a lot and they were in the middle of a lunch rush during my visit, but all my dishes came at a reasonable time. Also, my waitress, Alyssa (not sure if I spelled her name correctly since I didn't ask her how she spells it), made sure to check on me and other tables every few minutes to see how we were doing! After my meal, I love how Alyssa gave me some stickers, just as I love how I got to speak a little bit with the kitchen staff (as they were less busy by the time I was leaving)! I found it funny how some of them thought I was Kevin, a family friend of theirs. It was this amazing combination of food and service, which reminded me of my family and simpler times, that was the reason this restaurant was my go-to restaurant when I was a law school student at UW-Madison years back (even though this restaurant was out of my way and there were so many other Lao/Southeast Asian restaurants closer to where I was living). My visits here back then helped more than I could ever describe with combating all the stress I had (because law school was so difficult) and the loneliness I had (because I had no luck making friends at the time). Sadly, they didn't have Thai iced tea during my visit, so that'll be a reason for me to come back! I'll have to get their pho next time, as that's also a dish I ordered years ago and loved! Btw, this restaurant will soon be moving from inside of Viet Hoa Market to Mishqui Peruvian Bistro (same plaza), which will allow them to have more tables/seating and more hours, so I'll definitely be back after they've moved!
