I have been many times since they opened in November and tried most things (except cupcakes). Croissants are probably their best item, but can sometimes be gummy and undercooked or dense. But when they are done well they are flaky and delicious. Biscuits are also very, very good. They had gingerbread men during the holidays that were excellent. Bread is just OK, the baguette was like air, not substantial at all and not good for sandwiches. The sliced bread is also just mediocre. Wagshals does a better job there...Bagels were awful, like lead and weirdly salty. Muffins are also just OK. I appreciate having this place so I can pop in if I am craving a pastry or biscuit, I still think some recipes need to be tweaked, but if I were eating at a regular bakery the same would probably be true...hope they can keep this going! read more

My girlfriend and I made a special trip into D.C. To try Rise. She's recently discovered a slight gluten allergy. We're glad that there is a gluten free bakery option but we're disappointed overall. We bought a cinnamon bun, an eclair and chocolate croissant. The croissant tasted good but was pretty dense. The eclair was lighter and what you'd expect except that it had a slight burnt taste. The cinnamon roll was also burnt and missing it's icing. We're hoping that this was a fluke given how many good reviews there are. We might give it another shot some other time. read more

Simply the best gluten free bakery I've ever been to. The biscuits are flakey and delicious. I also recommend the scones and muffins. The bread is wonderful too. Rise Bakery provided all of the desserts for our wedding - four wedding cakes and six pies! Our guests scraped the plates clean, and we've been getting compliments ever since. I highly recommend the team at Rise - they were very responsive, fun to work with, and extremely reasonably priced. When you eat gluten-free (whether by choice or medical necessity), there are certain hard truths you must come to accept. You will have to explain this eating pattern nearly every day. GF doesn't mean low calorie, and calories still matter. And perhaps most painfully, the GF versions of some things just don't taste as good as the originals, and some things are just impossible to recreate without gluten. Regarding this last point, croissants are a prime example. Most pastries with a light, fluffy texture are damn near impossible to recreate GF while maintaining edibility. So imagine my surprise when my wife and I stopped in to Rise to find not only good-for-GF croissants, but arguably some of the best croissants we have ever had. Hands down. Full stop. What did they do? A deal with the wheat devil? Synthetic gluten? Magic? Who knows, and frankly, who cares? These croissants, which come in plain, chocolate, and ham and cheese varieties, are enough to make Rise Bakery a regular stop on our weekend rounds. But the fact that they do pretty much everything well only adds to their appeal. Their hoagie rolls also compare favorably to full-gluten rolls, and their bagels were also outstanding. I only hope they continue developing recipes for those hard to recreate foods that so many people on a GF diet pine for, because so far, every swing has been a home run. read more

It's wonderful to know there's a bakery in DC that is exclusively gluten-free, with no cross-contamination risks. Unfortunately, their hours have made it tough for me to get over there while they're open, but I was finally able to try it recently. That day, they were out of a lot of items that I wanted to try, such as muffins, cinnamon rolls, individual bagels, etc. At the register, there were free samples of frosted brownies that were chewy and rich but a little too sweet (and they were out of those too). With the options available, I ended up getting a croissant, which I loved. It was soft, and the "crust" had a slight flakiness and buttery texture that is very hard to replicate in a gluten free food. The center was denser and almost gooey, compared to a regular croissant, but that is typical for gluten free flour. I was really happy with the croissant and am looking forward to trying more of their food, especially the breads and bagels. read more

I love Rise Bakery! They are one of the few places where you can get a cake/cupcake that is both gluten-free AND vegan. Stopped on a visit to DC. I got the red velvet cupcake, a chocolate croissant, and a maple glazed donut. The donut was just ok. Taste was on par, but the texture just wasn't there. As with others I have had, was more akin to a biscuit than a fluffy donut I remember pre-gluten-free. The red velvet cupcake was good. Tasty, great frosting. Texture was not grainy but a little dry (typical GF). The croissant, though. Oh my goodness, this was delicious. I haven't experienced a texture like this in GF for a very long time. Bottom line: stick to non-croissant options and avoid the coffee; shell out for mail-order GF croissants instead. I was super-excited to come here, since it's only the second place I've seen offering GF croissants! Unfortunately, I think I've gotten totally spoiled from the ones that Mariposa offers in CA, because the texture on these was really off - not flaky at all. The flavor was great (quite nice and buttery), and my partner said that if you thought of it as a thick, rolled up crepe, then it was totally fine. If you temper your expectations, then you may be able to enjoy it more than I did. I also appreciate their clarity on labeling, and their helpfulness when it comes to talking about the ingredients. Gluten-free usually means crumbly or off-tasting baked goods. Not so here at Rise Bakery. The butter croissants are absolutely delicious. Buttery as they should be with a touch of sweet to compliment the salty. The brownie is dedicant and divine. The bagels are very dense, but hardy and more like any other gluten-free bagel you can find. The other desserts (muffins, cupcakes, cookies) are on the sweet side, but all very good. First, the customer service was awesome. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and offered samples of the Nutella brownie, which was VERY good (even though that's not what I bought). Since Saturday is the day I allow myself a treat meal, I'm always on the hunt for a good gluten-free desert. There are a few good places around town, but most--like Red Velvet on 7th--don't have a good variety. This place did not disappoint! I had the chocolate chip cookie and a Brown Butter Pecan cupcake. The cake is more on the dense side; I wouldn't necessarily describe it as "moist," but I think it's a perfect balance for the heavier type of icing that it's paired with, which is a creamy, cold butter cream that would probably melt immediately if left at room temp. So the somewhat heavier cake is needed to hold this. Although my preference is a lighter, fluffier cake and a medium-texture, more sugary icing (not the whipped cream icing, but the "birthday cake" icing), I still really enjoyed this cupcake a lot. It wasn't too sweet, and the "richness" was perfect all around. I only wish it was a little bigger, lol. I'd definitely go back and I would also recommend this joint to anyone looking for a good variety of gluten-free and/or vegan sweet options. Oh, and the cookie was perfect. read more

Although I'm not glucose intolerant I was happy to see a new locally-owned bakery in the neighborhood and tried one of their croissants last weekend. It was a little heavier than a regular (non gluten-free) croissant but definitely tasty; I'd definitely go back for more. Their sweets (brownies, cupcakes, cookies, etc...) look good, too, so I'm sure I'll be trying those out soon. I was recently banned by my doctor from eating gluten ("Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity") - I am so happy to have discovered this place - a life saver. I tried their chocolate croissant - excellent, and I love that they don't make it overly sweet. Good chocolate as well. I took home the sandwich bread - very good, as well - wow, I can now have toasts and sandwiches! It made a nice light and fluffy toast (they are sold frozen, but you can just leave a slice out for a bit at room temperature and toast like a regular sliced bread). My friend tried a cinnamon bun - again, it's not overly sweet, and very nicely done (I doubt if you can tell it was gluten free). It is so nice to be able to eat great baked goods - without the bloating and nausea that wheat causes. I will surely be back to try more. I've been to Rise Bakery several times. I have tasted many of the items that they have with my favorite being the biscuits. Many of the other items are a bit too rich though, and I don't feel well after eating them. I think Rise Bakery could probably use some tweaks to their recipes to make them better. However, the primary reason for the three star rating was that an order I had made online a week earlier was not fulfilled when I arrived at the bakery. It seemed that it hadn't been recorded or wasn't recieved by the staff. I left very disappointed and the bakery was unable to make the order within the time I needed it. It was probably a mistake, but I didn't get a sense of any remorse or urgency from the manager to fix the issue. I may return in the future for their storefront items, but it seems the business doesn't take small orders seriously. read more

Ordered a cinnamon roll, a biscuit and a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread (Frozen). Cinnamon roll was like a rock. Heavy. Surprisingly very good and not as heavy when you bite it. The icing on top was icky. The biscuit was really good. No textural issues or funny aftertaste. The bread was awful. Dry. No, DRY. Crumbled when I tried to remove a slice. Texture of a dry sponge. Could slightly taste the cinnamon , but there were almost no raisins in it. Not every slice had one. Horrible waste of money. I don't really need to make another special trip. Sad. Glad I didn't spend $75 to have this shipped to me. read more

I could not give Rise Bakery a higher review, and I would if I could. I was planning on buying a cake from them for my gluten-free friend's birthday party. However, 48 hours before the event, the phone line at Rise was down. Terribly concerned, I reached out to them on Yelp and Twitter, and was able to reach them 24 hours or so before I was hoping to pickup the cake. They said that they would be able to make the cake that I wanted to buy (a 9" red velvet) as long as I could do late pickup. Delighted to be able to buy a cake that my friend could enjoy for his birthday, I made the necessary arrangements with them. I mention this story because Rise Bakery did an amazing job of accommodating my needs, which is really just one more reason to use them for any gluten-free cake situation. The first reason though, would definitely be their cake. The cake itself was excellent. I'm not a major cake fan, but the crumb was even and perhaps a little more quick-bread like (a compliment as far as I'm concerned), while I kept dragging my fork back through the cream cheese frosting, which was superb. Rise Bakery is fantastic and I look forward to buying more gluten-free baked goods from them in the future. read more
