Overall pretty good experience. The Silver Lyan bar was amazing. Very cool ambiance and the drinks were out of this world. They had a long list of unique and innovative cocktails but would happily make whatever you fancy. But for how the hotel is positioned there were a few things that you expect to be better or to be more thoughtful about. Poor quality towels - the towels were thin and scratchy Water pressure - this happens with hotels, particularly in DC but the water pressure left much to be desired. The shower itself was fantastic. Lighting - the lighting in the room and the bath area was very dim, making it difficult for my wife to put on her makeup. The mood lighting is nice but it would be useful if there was a way to control it better. I'd go to the Silver Lyan bar again in a heartbeat but not sure I'd stay at the hotel again. read more

I've avoided writing a review about this place simply because I've "retired" from writing reviews, but this place is worth it. I stayed here in July 2023 and the experience was A1. The service in this place is exceptional - from valet to the front desk to the speakeasy downstairs - and my room was clean. I'm a simple man so I don't ask for much. Everything was extremely clean and all the staff we encountered were so friendly and happy to help in anyway they could. The hotel itself is so beautiful and the room was clean and comfortable and quiet. The location was perfect in December as it was right across the street from this cute Christmas market. Such a wonderful stay! The Riggs Hotel is a beautiful building, filled with wonderful decor. There are loads of fun touches throughout the hotel that evoke the building's roots as a bank. The rooms are large and spacious and highlighted with comfortable, modern ("post-modern"?) furnishings. Everything was very clean. Our room had a large window looking out over the Chinatown area. The staff were, in general, wonderfully friendly and helpful. The was one bit of disappointment for me. At one point during our multi-day stay, as I, my wife, and a mother and young son waited for an elevator to arrive, two staff members ushered a couple from the front door into the elevator past us - blocking our way when the elevator came (without saying a word to us or even acknowledging us), letting the couple into the elevator, punching the button for their floor and then leaving once the doors closed (again without saying a word to us), leaving us to hit the button and wait once more to go up to our rooms. This was not a difficulty, but it was a little frustrating to be made to feel second-class compared to whoever the other two guests were, especially when one of the two staff members had been so nice as usual to us just minutes before. If the two people were in a rush - one was in a tuxedo, so perhaps they were heading to an event - I at least would've happily let them go first as well, but I would've appreciated being asked or having it acknowledged that four of us were present and had been waiting on the elevator first; as it was, I felt like the two people escorted past mattered to the staff and the four of us who were already there did not. read more

Got a reservation to be sure we had a table at this newer Penn Quarter restaurant on a Saturday eve Its fancy style with cloth napkins and cool table items. We got the fish dishes, char and halibut, that came with small quantities of veggies. Delish breadsticks served with water. Dessert were divine chocolate tart and real fresh berries with cream, service was good and social distancing in effect. Felt like a cramped NYC hotel, trying to be boutique but without the perks or the "boutiqueness". $400/night for smallest room ever + parking & guaranteed "Military discount" (but not getting it) doesn't qualify 5 stars for me. Hyatt Regency down street better food & hospitality & quality & Cheaper!! Definitely for this kind of $$ the Waldorf Astoria, neighbor hotel probably worth the extra $100. read more

Loved our visit. Went to DC to visit a few art museums and take a break. The Riggs was wonderful, they even had a birthday cake and card in the room for my wife's Birthday which was very unexpected. You paying for the quality service and the location, the rooms are a little small and this hotel in in a very old bank, so they are "old", but very well maintained and updated to stay in theme with the building. The Riggs Cafe is a must stop and the nightly free champaign was a treat. If you want to walk to a great art museum in the center of DC this is a great place. read more

The rooms have many treats, slippers, tote bag , playing cards and one of the best minibars I've seen! The door man was singing Christmas carols outside while I waited for my Lyft to the airport. The new Riggs hotel, very well located for either the political business or leisure traveler at F & 9th, is a welcome addition to the complement of hotels in downtown DC. Less expensive than many other top DC hotels, it is nevertheless stylish and spiffy, projecting a whimsical attitude with staff that generally aim to please. The food at Cafe Riggs is excellent and interesting - better than most hotel food by far. Considering that it opened after an extensive renovation right before the pandemic, it deserves some credit simply for keeping the lights on and continuing to look so good. That said, it is definitely still working out some kinks, but gives off confidence that the finest challenges of hotel consistency - housekeeping, room service, late night support- will be worked out with time, practice and the resources that come with great occupancy. read more

Stayed in a superior room on the 7th floor for one week. Highlight of the hotel is a grand high ceiling breakfast room on the ground floor next to an equally grand bar. Room was small with a shower/ toilet room, sink outside the room. Heard traffic noise at night. When the room was dark, an alternating red and green flashing light emitted out of the air return register. Our third day we had no hot water and we took cold showers. When I reported it to the front desk I was told it was the boilers, affecting many. The room adjacent to us had a plastic tarp taped with black duct tape over the door opening which we thought was creepy, one of many rooms affected by a recent hotel fire. Breakfast is expensive and a 20% service charge is added, not including gratuity. Hotel is located in a downtown neighborhood with overpriced mediocre restaurants. Stay in a nicer neighborhood and use the metro. read more

Gorgeous hotel right in the heart of Penn Quarter. I took my girlfriend here for a late Valentine's day weekend, and we had a wonderful time! First off, the hotel is in an old bank building, the Riggs National Bank Building, that dates back to 1891. The interior is spectacular, with high ceilings in the lobby and cafe. Corinthian columns are also present in the cafe, which I will get to later. The room was beautiful. We had booked a standard king room. However, when we checked in, the lady at the desk said we had been upgraded to a deluxe king for free! From the fridge that was behind a faux safe, to the large screen TV, everything was perfect! The cafe was very nice as well. From the high ceiling and the columns, and the big windows that made the space full of light, the spot was tremendous. We had breakfast, and the food was scrumptious. I had the Riggs breakfast, sausage, eggs, toasts and hash browns. My girlfriend had the pancakes and turkey bacon. We were very satisfied with our food. To top it off, the level of service was excellent. I had requested, when I made my reservation, that I would pay for some chocolates to be in the room when we arrived. The staff got back to me very quickly with a list of options, and then texted me a few days leading up to our stay to check in and see if I needed anything else. Check in was seamless and the bellhop was extremely helpful. They also have a valet service for parking your vehicle. We had an excellent stay and will be returning for sure! read more

I would like to start off by saying that my review would be higher if not for the slow service at the main bar in the restaurant . The cocktails that I had were tasty and well balanced. I had an entree and it was cooked to perfection, well presented and tasty. I may just chalk it up to a one off. The service at the bar in the vault was world class. We stayed here for 5 nights and had a wonderful experience! As soon as we checked in, the front desk informed us that they had upgraded our room. It was a great beginning to our little vacation! The room was nice, clean and beautifully decorated. Our room was bright with natural light and electric lighting. The blackout curtains were a plus because the bed was right next to the window. The bathroom was a bit odd because the light switch was behind the bathroom door. Besides that, the bathroom was clean and comfortable with a fantastic double shower head and perfect water pressure. Our bath towels were thick and fluffy, like those found in a luxury hotel. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that there was no dresser drawers to store our clothing that couldn't be hung by hangers in the closet. Therefore, we kinda lived out of our suitcases during our stay. The staff, atmosphere and friendly, attentive service were all a plus at the Riggs. The restaurant had delicious food choices and very gracious wait staff. The neighborhood was clean and free of homeless nuisances. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area with a variety of food choices that we certainly took advantage of. With the hotel's central location to many of the DC monuments, museums and attractions I'd definitely recommend staying here!! read more

Stayed for two nights the week of the first Presidential debate. The hotel was clean and nicely decorated. It felt like we had the hotel to ourselves since this is the era of COVID-19. The staff was helpful and respectful. We didn't get to check out the rooftop bar or the cafe because they were closed though. But the location was nice. My wife, our dog (Mabel, a Bernese Mountain Dog) and I have now stayed at the Riggs twice, once over Christmas (my last review, also 5 stars) and the second time over Valentines' Day. The main difference was that COVID restrictions are lighter, so we were able to eat at Cafe Riggs in their dining room as opposed to room service (they cook all room service) and hotel rooms they turned into private dining rooms during the height of COVID. We already knew the food was excellent. Now we learned that so is the restaurant service. Both times we traveled from upstate NY just to stay and eat there, and both times it was worth it. This is the friendliest, most helpful staff of any hotel we've ever stayed at. I'm 66 and I've done a fair amount of traveling, so this is not a trivial compliment. They earned that assessment. I needed a couple of extra things for Valentines Day and they were handled with perfection. The Riggs is dog friendly. What I have learned from staying there is that when most hotels claim to be dog friendly, what they mean is dog tolerant. That's not what the Riggs means. They fuss over dogs because they're all into dogs. If you go with a dog (which you have to tell them, of course; there is an upcharge for cleaning), you'll find a dog bed, dog toy, and a pair of substantial dog bowls in the room. I"ll give you one example that should illustrate what they're like: They have an ostensible size limit on dogs of 35 lbs. Mabel is over twice that but she's gentle, quiet, completely non-aggressive, and non-destructive, so I needed to talk to someone to get permission, in this case Ms. Panameno, the front office manager. As part of the conversation I emailed her a picture of Mabel. When we arrived for Valentine's Day, on the table in our room was a framed card with Mabel's photo saying Welcome Back Mabel. The main negatives are : the room is relatively small and lacks sufficient storage space so it's pretty impractical , the parking is priced unreasonably high, and some of the staff like the valets could use better training. read more

My husband was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, and will be having surgery in the next few weeks. I have contacted Riggs via their online contact form and have left voicemails for their manager, and have never gotten a response regarding my upcoming reservation. I am not asking for a refund on my reservation, but instead would like a credit for a future stay. Although this hotel is beautiful and the service I received their last Summer was great, I am appalled that they are unwilling to even speak with me now that I am dealing with a truly terrible situation. read more

Had 1/2 of a drink at the lobby. My friend went down the block and threw up because he felt sick. We were both kicked out because of racial profiling but used the drinking as an issue. I asked them to look at the cameras as we did not do anything wrong but were kicked out regardless. Lawsuits pending. read more

This was our first getaway in the COVID-19 era for my husband and me. It was just one night but we felt safe the entire time, thanks to the wonderful staff, spacious indoor spaces, and outdoor drinking and dining options. The entire hotel is gorgeous! The rooftop was amazing - great views of the city and the capital dome, and our room was spotless. Also-everyone adhered to the mask and social distancing protocols. The hotel and restaurant have the potential to be great. It's new and they are experiencing growing pains. I wasn't going to post a review because we received such great customer service from the hotel staff and room rate was steeply discounted. But once we were checking out I realized the hotel had a very serious problem, theft. We stayed in the hotel two nights a Friday and Saturday. The first room didn't have heat or hot water. So we had to change rooms. Transferring rooms the first time was not difficult because we had not unpacked. The second room had major plumbing issues, the shower did not drain and the toilet exploded and water started bubbling up from both the shower and the toilet. Since we had plans we couldn't move our belongings quickly. We were told not to worry about and we could pack up our belongings and turn in the old keys when we were ready. We were in our third room getting dressed for the evening when a hotel worker entered our room without knocking lucky I was able grab a towel to cover up. The employee was very apologetic and said that he was told we weren't in the room. That was weird how would they know if we were in our room or not. On my way out for the evening the maintenance man looked surprised that he saw us and said I thought you guys were at the wedding. Then continued to asked about our plans for the evening. I felt very uncomfortable with his line of questions especially because we are women but thought maybe he might just be very friendly. I thought I hadn't left any cash or valuables in my room but I told him we were just going for a quick drinks downstairs. So he knew were in still in the hotel. We had a very large group for dinner in the restaurant. The food was good but we had several servers that weren't communicating to each other so we'd get multiples we didn't ask for. At one point the waiter handed the wrong drink to another diner that took a drink and realized it wasn't hers so the waiter tried to give the contaminated drink to the right person instead of taking it away and giving her a new one. As we were getting ready for check out one of my guest noticed the maintenance man in the hallway and asked we could get back into the our previous room with the plumbing problems because we couldn't find a pair of sunglasses and assumed the glasses just were left behind in the old room. We then found out another worker had been wearing the sunglasses and when questioned about them he was instructed to bring them down to the front desk. Even though we knew what happened to the sunglasses the front desk woman pretended they had been in the lost and found the entire time. But how did they get there if we hadn't even checked out of the hotel yet. So this morning when I was getting dressed for work I realized that a small purse I put in my makeup bag Saturday night was missing. I usually keep a small amount of cash, a credit card, and receipts in the purse so I don't have to carry my entire wallet. I'm not sure of the entire contents or even how much cash was it but I had pretty important usb drives in it. I called the hotel this morning at 8:30 and I'm waiting to hear back from their security team. I will follow up with them around noon if I haven't heard back my next step will be to file a police report. read more

The Riggs has beautiful rooms and a nicely designed lobby. The staff seem pleasant for the most part. It is centrally located to a lot of things you may want to see in DC. That said it's otherwise very average. They don't serve breakfast, they do grab and go, which consists of stale pastries and a cup of coffee ( not a large cup ) that they charge $5.50 for. I expect to pay more in big cities - but you can walk down to Starbucks a block away and actually pay less. You can get a hot breakfast. I'd say this might be covid related, except they do a full dinner menu so clearly they don't mind serving people in the dining room. We walked all over DC for the morning/afternoon, returning just before 3pm. We wanted to sit and have a cocktail - no lunch and no cocktails until after 5pm - the bar is closed. The rooftop bar is also closed. Again - maybe some to do with covid - but we can buy breakfast/lunch or cocktails at a number of nearby hotels. As a whole - I'd say go somewhere else. This has the service level of a Holiday Inn and Suites - but not those prices. read more
