A solid 4. Close to a 5. Our room was a suite with over 700'. A nice den area with a good TV. A seperate kitchenette that would be useful for many if in town more than a day or two. If you had a 3rd person or a couple kids I think the room would even be better so they could use the couch. Our king size bed was very comfortable. The Tv in the bedroom did not work well which was a little frustrating but we got over that. The staff was friendly and very helpful. I am glad I took a chance on this hotel, despite scary negative reviews. This was a great find for us, value-wise and convenience-wise, as my college age daughter is living in another building right down the block, and the price was very fair for what you got. The suite was perfectly clean, had a comfortable bed, deep bathtub, kitchenette, and working coffee maker. Staff at the front desk somewhat dim but friendly. Is it glamorous or well decorated? No way. Was the room under $150? Yes! Unheard of in this town. While we paid in advance for a Spothero spot nearby (to avoid $48 parking fee), we found legal street parking right on the same block, so there wasn't even any need to pay for parking. Love the hotel staff is nice they have a restaurant on site ,CVS and liquor store right next door. The deluxe suite is very spacious, has a nice dining room, has a nice size kitchen w stove, forks, knives, drinking glasses, pots, toaster, microwave also a keriq machine The living room has a nice desk table, beautiful pictures on the wall. I like the bathroom with the mirrors on the wall and glass shelf. The body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and soap are all from Bath and Body Works. The bedroom has a king-size bed. The sheets are so soft the bed is so comfortable . The hotel is very clean across the street is the bus stop, the restaurant Tonic is an 8 minute walk. Room 630 reeks of mold and mildew. The stench gave us headaches, and caused us to cough and sneeze. We took pictures and showed them to the front desk, she insisted that there was nothing wrong with the room and was rude to us like she was doing us a favor after moving us to a different room. In addition, regarding location, although close by to transportation and sights, there were many homeless people camped out nearby. read more

PROS: this is a nice hotel to stay in that's not too far from the memorials and monuments. The rates are affordable, they have a gym, many rooms, and most of the staff is very nice. Patrick helped me at check in very well CONS: they have two tiny parking lots that only hold 12 cars, meanwhile it costs $48 to park there. Miguel was also a bit rude on the phone when I called in before check in. Breakfast must be bought, and is not complimentary OVERALL: it's a good hotel to stay at it. It's not my first option but I'm confident you're not going to be upset with it read more

This interaction was the worst initial experience I've ever had at a hotel. After being disappointed by one of my faves (see review for Hotel Hive), I was left on the rainy streets of DC at 2:30 am to find a new stay. Since I have often stayed at Hotel Hive, I know the area well and always pass State Plaza Hotel on my walks. I drove down the block, parked at the back entrance and looked them up online. Since it was so late, I could not book online without setting check-in for later that day. After calling many times, I finally got an answer. The gentleman on the phone told me the nightly rate. I asked if it could be matched to any online offers, and he told me no. He suggested that I book online and then come in. When I look online, and all the quotes are in total price. I repeatedly called back again until he answered and asked for the full cost to compare. He gives me a rate of around $650. I then shared with him my issue about the discrepancy with the dates. He stated that if I use hotels.com, it should allow me to do so. Fair enough. I also inform him that I am trying to enter the building to no avail. He tells me that I am at the back entrance and should come around to the front E Street entrance. I try hotels.com as he suggested and it is still not allowing me to include the current night's stay. Exhausted, I was willing to pay the $650-ish quoted to get some rest. I go in and tell him I spoke with him on the phone and couldn't do what he suggested, so I'll book at the rate quoted. He puts all the information in, and I notice it's taking some time. He volunteered that it was because of a system issue with adding the taxes for the last night. I tell him no problem. After additional time passed, he said he misquoted me because he calculated it manually and not in the system. He said that he applied a 15% discount but that I would still owe a difference of over $100. Confused, I calmly repeated what he said to ensure I understood. At this, he became visibly irritated. I ask what can be done to honor the original quote since that's what was said. He condescendingly reiterates that he already gave me a 15% discount and he can go back to the initial rate if that's not good enough. I calmly stated that while I appreciate that it doesn't resolve the issue of the misquote because I'm still paying more than quoted. He then stated that he would simple charge me the original rate. I tell him no and calmly try to explain my point of view, and he then cuts me off and tells me I can leave. At this point, I'm stunned. I asked him why he would prefer to turn a customer away than work to resolve the issue. He reiterates that I should go. I then inquired if there was a manager I could speak to. He stated he was the manager, which was even more shocking. I asked for a business card for his boss, and he hands me a generic hotel business card. I turn around to leave and then turn back and asked if he would prefer to turn away a paying customer and risk negative word of mouth than correct his mistake. He reiterated that he would and I should go. So I did. I was astonished at this type of behavior from a hotel representative in general but especially from a manager. I hope that the $100 saved was worth turning away from someone who is a loyal customer of businesses that prioritize quality and customer experience. Thankfully I found a wonderful place to stay at the AC Hotel Downtown (see review), where I was treated with kindness and respect. I suggest you skip this place and go there. You may even receive a superior experience for less, as I did. read more

Stayed here 3 nights on our first-ever trip to Washington DC. It is an older building and has a nostalgic feel with the old-style awning extenting from the door to the street and a "bell hop". Electrical and plumbing are up-to-date. Room has most of the standard amenities and lots of closet space. Posatives: Friendly and helpful Staff Just two blocks up from the National Mall Very clean, quiet. Room included a hot pot separate from the coffe maker. Reasonably priced for the area. Cafe in the Hotel. Negatives: No refrigerator in the room. Noisy toilet Very limited parking (extra cost) Hotel cafe is a little pricey. Other: Just across the street from GW University. Conclution and Recommendations: Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again but would explore other options too. Great place to stay for the price. read more

I wouldn't stay here again. Getting from the north building to the south building (the hotel has 2 parts, and I was with a large group who was attending a conference together) by way of an outdoor parking lot, in a locked courtyard that felt creepy, doesn't feel safe as a woman alone. But the biggest problem I have with this is the HVAC system. The entire hotel is either on air conditioning or heat. You have no choice -- that is controlled by management and is changed seasonally. I visited at the end of September, and I found the night and early morning to be chilly. I could not turn on the heat in my room, however, because there was no heat on in the hotel. Only the AC was on for the hotel at that time. That is, I could have the air conditioning off or on, but heat was not an option. Another problem I have with this hotel is that the rooms have only a deadbolt to lock them. I strongly prefer a room that also has a chain (or another type of lock) on the inside of the door. Again, I say this particularly as a woman traveling alone. The bathroom was tiny, but that was fine because I was staying there alone. The room was really more of a suite because it had a dressing area outside of the bathroom, a nicely-sized room, and a full kitchen. The room/suite was clean. The hotel has adorable mail slots on every floor near the elevators. It was really fun to post a letter! read more

A bit tired looking on the outside but a very clean warm refurbished super comfortable and affordable gleaming hotel. Right across from the State Dept. which often sends its official visitors to stay. Strong staff including doorman. Unintentionally retro kitchens in rooms. It's like an extended stay 1967. Great new carpets and gleaming tile bathrooms. (The CVS next door is dingy but super convenient to stock up that hotel big fridge. Liquor store out the door as well.) Great daily laundry service if needed. A strange mirrored identical image lobby on different sides of same block can absolutely throw you when dropped off by a cab. Huh? A maze to get to other side. Sometimes same doorman continues the illusion. Clean. Warm. Safe. Solid. Well serviced. Big rooms. A short walk below GW campus. The friendly uniformed staff and guests sometimes all seem born overseas and all striving for the American Dream. read more

So I have noticed that a lot of the average reviews are pertaining to the area around the hotel and the lack of things that are open during the weekend. Here is the thing this hotel is located right across the street...so to speak.....from the State Department and is also near various other Federal Buildings. Now with that being said in most U.S. Cities things being closed and pretty boring neighborhoods are pretty much the norm and I know because I have to been to plenty of big cities and witnessed the same problem. None of these things have anything to do with the State Plaza Hotel. This hotel has a great charm and ambiance to it and while it is old the renovations that have been made to the place has not taken away that charm. I love the incandescent light bulbs in the bathroom...the old school gas stove in the kitchen...and the very simple furnishings located throughout the room. The bed is very comfortable and the room itself is plenty big enough to move around. If I had one complaint it was the lip that leads from the kitchen to the main room area. It is a little dangerous if you don't watch your step...you could stub your toe and hurt yourself if you're not careful. Everything else was just fine which included the WiFi, and the heat was awesome considering it was cold in DC...LOL!!! NOTE: There is a bus stop about 30 seconds across the street from the hotel and I highly recommend taking public transportation to get around the area. It is very inexpensive with the Metro Bus only cost 2 bucks and the Circulator Bus is only a buck. The best part is you can transfer to either bus for free. The Metro Train is a great option as well but it is a bit of walk to the two major train stations near the hotel unless you are in your twenties and in good shape.....LOL!!!!! This area does have a 24hr CVS next door for pretty much anything you need and there is a homeless tent city so to speak across from the Hotel but they pretty much keep to themselves and don't bother people at all. It's okay for the area. If you have a car and can stay elsewhere, stay in Georgetown. The homeless camp across the street will keep you from venturing out on foot. There is nothing nearby that is open on the weekends. Coffee shop, donut, nothing. The elevator is original and you take your life if your hand when you ride it. You have to haul yourself and bags up a dozen steep steps to get to the elevator from the lobby. The rooms are clean, but again, rundown. Wi-fi is very spotty. Rooms are spacious but the TV is fairly small for being across the room. Most of the cable stations were fuzzy, and we had to stream GoT just to watch it. Only a couple local channels came in clearly. They spent time and money to update the lobby but it didn't go further than that. I am not a fan and will remember to look elsewhere. read more

The hotel was overall not what I was expecting. Besides not having your car parked in a garage right at the hotel (it's on another street) the a/c was not working. No one said anything at check in. Then I was told it was being worked on and finally the very nice maintenance guy brought in some fans. At this point it was almost 11pm and I was traveling with three young kids. This was not ideal and caused my kids to not sleep well. They went to bed very late and then we slept in a very loud room bc of the ac trying to run (but not putting out any kind of air) and two fans on high so it was extremely loud. The two stars are simply bc the maintenance guys was extremely sweet and helpful. The ac not working was not compensated or anything even though it caused us to not have a restful nights sleep. read more

Is this the 4 seasons? No it's not fam. But it is a pretty well taken care of , older hotel located near a lot of great stuff in the heart of DC. It was also perfect for this weekend trip for my wedding anniversary and to see Tom segura live at the Warner Theatre (review of that place coming soon. ) this hotel has a great staff who is accommodating and helpful. The parking this visit cost 46$ a day for valet parking. However there seems to be a 24 hour garage right next door with limited space for way less and another parking garage a block or so away. So do your homework. The hotel is located right next to a cvs and a liquor store. Incase you wanna get lit up before going out on the town. As some have mentioned the surrounding area has some usual things you find in metropolitan settings. Like homeless people. They won't bother you if you don't bother them, I promise. The room we got has a full kitchen area which is actually kinda great. Full size fridge which we took full advantage of, US postal service drop boxes on every floor which we actually used. All in all is it a luxury hotel? hell no! But it didn't have a luxury rate either. I think we paid 129 a night or maybe less plus 46$ a night for valet. read more

I had booked to go see my daughter for Parents Weekend only to have her get cast in a show and have her time for Parents Weekend booked with tech for the show. I called and asked if it were possible to slide my non-refundable prepaid reservation a weekend so I could not only see my kid but see her show and they were more than accommodating. The hotel is perfect location on Foggy Bottom next to the National Mall. Upon arrival I was quickly checked in and the front desk gal was great. Now, I don't advertise my profession, however with what I do I look at cleanliness a lot, and know all the spots that are typically missed in everyday cleaning. My first thing when entering any hotel room is to check the bed, and then work my way out just to see the standard of cleanliness (for my own curiosity and to see how well my dust allergy needs to be contained with meds). I hit the whole room and deemed the room clean. I couldn't even find dust by running a hand on the high horizontal surfaces or by moving the night stand. Bravo! I stopped by the desk and asked for express checkout so I could quietly slip away when leaving and my student could stay until her 8am class and they happily obliged. I didn't try the restaurant - but I did quickly use the business center to print tickets for a museum and the ease of use was spectacular. I will definitely be booking this facility over the next 4+ years as long as my daughter is dormed nearby. read more

The room is clean and roomy. The decor is updated and carpet is well maintained. Customer service is good as well. Only thing g is they do t allow later checkout ...the bathroom/shower is also clean and contemporary. I have a dinette..full size refrigerator ... microwave, range and dishes if and when you decide to stay for a longer stay.....maybe next time I visit WV definitely will stay again here..don't expect for a view there is none.. read more

Pros: was upgraded to a large suite with a full kitchen, living room, and dinning space (read on other sites that it is pretty common to get an upgrade, was expecting it upon arrival). The suite was immaculately clean, it had a mod vibe to it, and a wonderful view of George Washington University dorms. Felt like Hitchcock's Rear Window since we had a perfect view into several student apartments. We opened the windows at night and it was pretty loud and rowdy, the street has a lot of student housing which made the streets feel safe because there were many groups of people walking around late at night. It was fun to hear the bustle and feeling the energy while getting ready. If you do not like noise, rest assured that it was perfectly quiet if the windows were closed, we had no sleep disturbances. Very close to all the attractions and great restaurants. Cons: bed was good, not great. read more

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE Do not stay here. Peter the ASM is a joke and Gabriella at the front desk is a liar and has terrible customer service skills. During check in I had 2 reservations. one for the my first night and one for my next 5 nights. Gabriella told me during check in I would have to come back the next morning in order to "check out" and "Check in again" under my 2nd reservation. They also made us pay for the room a second time because they couldn't "find the digital credit card" that shows it was paid already. When I asked about checking out and checking back in Gabriella told me I would stay in the same room and nothing would change. When I asked why she couldn't just merge the reservations she said I would just have to do it this way. When I asked her if I had to switch rooms she told me no, nothing would change I could stay in the same room. I went to work the next morning and when I came back that night to "check out and check back in" guess who the agent was??? Yup Gabriella. She informed If I wanted to stay in my same room (that she had checked me into the night before!!!) that I would have to pay an "upcharge" of $80 per night. I asked for a manager and Peter told me the same thing. I then asked for my new keys so I can move my stuff and I was told I would have to go get all of my stuff first, bring it down to the lobby and check in to my new room. This is absolutely asinine! What property does this to their guest???? I made sure Peter got an ear full when he unlocked my old room and helped me move all my things to a new room. The best part was watching him tell me there was nothing he could do to fix it cause he can't override the new price. HE'S THE FREAKING MANAGER HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS TO MAKE IT RIGHT! Don't stay here unless you have a desire to get your chain jerked around by Peter and Gabriella. I think they secretly like pissing off guest. Also Peter if you get to read this, your empathy in the elevator was a joke and I saw right through it. Take your meal vouchers and give them to the homeless, cause it's worthless it me! read more

So our flight got in way earlier than check in(which was at 3pm) upon arrival I called the hotel and asked if they were able to hold our luggage until check in, not only did they do so but they were also able to accommodate us with an early check in which was around 11am. Front desk and doormen were very welcoming greeting us as we entered and left the hotel and helped with all of our needs. House keeping came in daily to make the bed, wash our dishes and give us clean towels. We ate at the cafe once, it was a little pricey but the food wasn't bad. It's next door to a CVS and a liquor store so we were able to get water and snacks as needed. All in all the stay was nice I would recommend State Plaza to anyone wanting to be in the city it's about 10mins from the White House and all the monuments and museums. We used scooters to get around faster. Absolutely love DC can't wait to be back! read more

COMFORTABLE AND CONVENIENT This is a very good choice of hotel if you're visiting on business or here on vacation. It's within easy walking distance of all the monuments and museums, as well as the major federal government buildings and George Washington University. There also are transit stops nearby. The hotel itself is in a quiet neighborhood, is comfortably furnished, and has a friendly staff. Room rates are very reasonable for downtown DC. Note for disabled visitors: Because of the age of the building, access from the lobby to the elevator and guest rooms requires either going up several stairs or going outside and back in through another door. read more

This hotel has got to be the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in. Even the stairwells and the garage is super-clean. Wow! Convenient location, very, very friendly staff, ridiculously comfy beds, intensely perfect water pressure, plenty of hot water, too. Rooms have an adorable kitchenette with a full fridge, stove, microwave, utensils, coffeemaker, tea kettle... even a copy of the Washington Post delivered each morning. Love it! Wifi is free and speedy, too. The 24-hour CVS directly next door is super-convenient, and the proximity to DC tourist spots (Washington Monument, etc.) is lovely. If you forced me to complain about something, I'd whine that the elevators are slightly slow (first world problem!), and that the rooms are spendy... but don't be shy about asking for the AAA discount if you're a member. There is no swimming pool, there is no late night lounge to mingle with the locals in but the State Plaza Hotel isn't that kind of downtown D.C. hotel anyway. The State Plaza Hotel is an affordable, convenient and respectable hotel located on a quiet street between the Elipse and the Kennedy Center. What once were studio apartments or perhaps housing for State Department employees are now fine hotel rooms. The State Plaza has its cons just like anything in life, but the pros far outweigh anything negative you can think of. CHECK-IN Check-in was fast (completed within 4 minutes) and courteous. The staff was attentive, polite and served with a smile. They do put a small charge on your card for incidentals ($30) which is standard in the hotel industry. ROOM We had reserved a room with two beds and unlike most hotels these were not tiny double beds these were two massive queen beds. The room was impeccably clean and welcoming. The beds were wrapped in bright white linens and each had five massive pillows. CON #1: The pillows are so massive that you can't really use them. They are hard and don't give in to your body weight so it's like this huge awkward boulder you are trying to sleep on. CON #2: The typical hotel bleach smell. With so much bright white linen in the place the smell of bleach can be a bit much. There was a nice 42" HD television and a decent selection of cable channels along with a generous dresser and decent writing desk (which I am sitting at now) completing the main room. Each room also has a nice little kitchenette complete with stove, full size refrigerator, dishes, silverware and a sink. You can request a microwave in your room for a small additional fee, looking back I wish I had. The bathroom includes a sitting area or as my daughter kept calling it a "powder room". The sitting area has a nice little table complete with oversized wall mirror and a little bench. It apparently reminds some of old horror movies as I woke up one morning to find my daughter sitting there brushing her hair singing "Ring Around the Posie" in a distorted voice, she thought it was hilarious. The bathroom itself has a great big shower-head that brings a rainstorm down on you. The water pressure was outstanding and the linens were clean and plentiful. CON #3: Some people fart, let's face it. So when dad (that would be me) blows up the bathroom he would like to be able to vent out the noxious gas so that others can use the bathroom in the next 3-4 hours. Unfortunately I could not find the fan or any exhaust vent. So you may want to bring the Febreeze. Three little innocuous "negatives" certainly won't ruin your stay in this hotel. I highly recommend staying here and enjoying the affordability, convenience and service of a great hotel. Services include laundry service, room service and a free paper delivered to your door each morning. OVERALL: If you are looking for a hotel that is centrally located and has a CVS, Starbucks, Subway and Dunkin Donuts within .25 block then this is your new D.C. hotel. If you are looking for an affordable, clean and spacious room on a quiet street, then this is your new D.C. hotel. The State Plaze Hotel is my new home away from home. read more

Really can't complain about anything. The price was one of the best and I didn't realize we would have a full kitchen. I was with my 9 year old daughter for a sightseeing trip so we wouldn't have used the kitchen anyway. This place is located within walking distance of just about everything. The beds were very comfortable and water pressure in the shower was great! There is a CVS right next door in case you forget anything on your trip. We had a difficult time getting a taxi to to go to the washington nationals baseball game and the conceierge had an employee drive us and we just had to give him a small fee. The service was exceptional, every employee we encountered was helpful and kind (including the woman at the front desk when we arrived at 6am to drop our bags off and wander around until they let us check in - at 9am which was amazing after a rough red eye flight) The room was huge, full kitchen and awesome remodeled bathroom. I actually took a picture of what kind of mattress because it was so comfortable. Not an amazing view from our room but super close to everything. There is a CVS and liquor store right next door; the CVS was a lifesaver... Let's be real, so was the liquor store. We explored a lot and didn't find anywhere I would consider more centrally located, would absolutely stay again. read more

The price is too high for the quality of service and room you get. Room temperature is controlled through out the building, they turned an old apartment with cheap makeover to a hotel and they have no parking. Found a bug in the room as we walked in, bathroom was not fully cleaned but on the upside they have full kitchen. Pay the extra $30 a night and get something else. read more

Hotel itself was nice. Shady when it comes to finances. Was told I would pay a $60 authorization for incidentals. After checking out my bank account showed that the $60 hold was gone, but replaced with a $500 authorization, this was after I already paid almost $800 for the stay. 3 days later there is still a $500 hold on my account and my hotel bill has been paid. Hotel staff and GM spent entire conversation talking down to me stating I didn't understand how it works and blamed my bank. I even placed the bank on the phone with them and they explained that the hotels merchant was the one holding those funds. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels and never had this happen. I never approved them to run a $500 authorization of my card. Will be shredding this card asap so they can't charge my card for anything else. read more

The State Plaza Hotel is overall pretty impressive. We asked for a room on the eighth floor and got a huge room. My dad and I had a dressing room, bathroom, kitchen, dining room, closet space, bedroom, and office. My only complaint would be the entrance. We arrived but no one was there to greet us outside and direct us, but Frances at the front desk was very helpful and showed us where to go and what to do. Also, there are stairs to get to the elevator which can be difficult to navigate without help carrying your luggage. With the two elevators, it may take a while to get to your room. The hotel also claims they are friendly to the environment by reusing things but they replaced soap bars that have been used once. Overall, the location was great, right next to the monuments and has a CVS next to it. Also, it was nice to get The Washington Post in the morning. The interior is pretty, modern, and spacious, and the rooms are simple, clean, large, and can get very warm. I received one of the suites that came with a large living room and a kitchen (including a stove, microwave, and refrigerator). The rooms were clean and felt recently renovated. The bathroom was nice, and modern. I had 2 minor gripes. First, it is nice to have a kitchen, but the cabinets were sticky. Ugh. Second, the rooms were dimly lit. It would've been nice to have a couple of extra lights. Again, these are pretty minor issues. The staff were pleasant and professional. Overall, it was a decent experience. I wasn't particularly impressed or disappointed, so about 3.5 stars. I'll bump them to a 4 since they gave me an upgraded room for free. read more

Our check-in was seamless! Parking outrageous at $46/day. Our suite is enormous and even has a great little kitchenette. Room is very clean and very attentive staff! Our first time in DC and my husband picked a great hotel with a wonderful location! Very pleased here so far! read more

Work sets me up here when I visit DC. I've stayed here twice in the past 4 months but I have to say I like this hotel. The front desk staff is very friendly. Housekeeping will ask if you want your room clean, even if you're hanging out in your room they don't forget about you. The kitchenettes are huge and there is a bag of ice in your full size fridge. Complimentary water in room, comfy beds and pillows. TV and channels are more than adequate. Overall a good place to stay. Would recommend read more

The good: Good location, very spacious rooms, full kitchen with fridge, close to tourist stuff. Porters were polite, front desk attentive. The in-house restaurant is VERY good, and very reasonably priced. The meh: Had to call four times to get an extra roll of toilet paper delivered, and only got it after two hours. Cleaning staff missed vital items while cleaning, like the pair of panties a previous guest had left under the vanity chair. We left them there, too. read more

Great hotel! The staff is first rate and super attentive. The rooms are spotless and very large. Ours came with a full kitchen and a dressing room off the bathroom, but I think they all might. There is a restaurant on premise but we didn't eat there. Parking is crazy expensive but they only have about eight spaces in the garage. The layout is pretty confusing initially because there are two towers and you can't get from one to the other from any floor but the garage level. Once you figure out where your room is and how to get there it's not a big deal though. Both towers have a front desk and doormen. It is by the State Department so everything shuts down on the weekends. The Dunkin isn't open but the Starbucks is open, but with modified weekend hours. The Metro- Foggy Bottom and GWU are all within walking distance and once within the campus there are plenty of food options. We ate at Tonic @ Quigley's both nights and it was fantastic. The National Mall is also within walking distance. A great place to stay if you're going to an event at the Kennedy Center. read more
