The waitress/hostess was friendly and we ordered 4 tacos . 2 for each of us. The waitress had to ask us again if we reallyy wanted just 4. Big mistake because after we got it, we order another round of 4. Once, they get to the table. the soft tortilla is hot with slight crisp and filled with meat, cilantro/parsley/radish and wedges of lime on the side. They provide you 3 sauce: green hot sauce, red hot sauce, and guacamole sauce. Place all 3 sauce on top, squeeze some lime juice, fold, and take the best bite ever!! After one bite, you are sold!!! I liked Ricos. Imagine if you took a hole-in-the-wall place and then just made it a full size restaurant. Take some old school pizzeria booths. Throw in some raggedy menus and a TV playing Univision telenovelas. And also some waitstaff that speak unintelligible English, and you've got the makings of a pretty good taco place. The steak enchiladas in the verde sauce were pretty damn good. Be warned that unlike other verde sauces, theirs is actually spicy! The menu says that entrees come with your choice of two out of four things (rice, salad, fries and beans), but when we asked, our waitress just said it came with rice and salad, and we would have to pay extra for beans. The salad had a couple of slices of avocado though, so it had that going for it. The tacos were also pretty good. We had the taco al pastor (doner-style meat) and the cow tongue one (which was super tender). With two drinks (they don't serve beer), our total bill was just a little over $21, which is pretty, pretty cheap. Be forewarned that the "chocomilk" was basically just milk with Hershey's powder. The staff (usually just one woman visible) is sometimes hiding in corners, but once you order and are eating, none of that matters. And does it really matter that your table shows the record of the previous four groups to sit there? I think not... The atmosphere... outdoor seating.... being the only white people (plus one Asian) within a 10 block radius.... not understanding really what anyone was saying around me... blasting Mariachi type music etc. etc. also added to the illusion. Service was ridiculously slow... but my annoyance with the slow service was made up in the form of learning that they had free guacamole sauce and had MEXICAN COKES for purchase!!! Now to be fair, I actually bought my coke from across the street (because I figured it'd be cheaper and I was getting low on my cash) after the meal to quench my thirst but my comrades and I loved that they had it. The taco truck on 54th wasn't there so i came here. They have friendly staff, great service, and great tacos. Made a mistake by coming here. 1 star for the food but it was still mediocre. I waited over 40 mins for my order and I was served with attitude from the staff. I'm really hoping it was not a discriminatory feeling that I felt but it was felt alright. I ordered regular veggie soft tacos but did not bother to tell me whether I wanted the small or big one so they made the big one and my bill came out to be doubled its original price that I calculated beforehand. This is an authentic Mexican spot, in fact it's so authentic that you need to order in Spanish. The menu has all the the authentic tacos and what not. They have the best torta I have ever had. Now, they don't have air conditioning, but I don't recall ever being hot there. To be fair it's a hole in the wall kind of place, but you will not have stomach issues after eating her. This is not an American Mexican place, and you will not have tacos that are overloaded with toppings. I suggest the lengua (tongue) taco, and you will not be disappointed. read more

Oh, Rico's... I want to love you more than I do. I wish you could change my mind and I've given you so many chances to do so, but still you sit with a measly 3 stars in my book. You have all the makings of a great taqueria, yet somehow you fall short when it comes to your tacos. 24 hours? Wow. Plenty of seating? Wow. Delivery? Ricos Tacos was the second stop on ¡Taco Crawl! The space was small and very full, thankfully of locals, not intrepid food adventurers in search of best tacos ever. Since this was ¡Taco Crawl!, This review is only about the tacos. We tried four different tacos, including lengua, buche (beef stomach), and suadero (beef belly + other bits). These were full of meaty goodness and garnished with radishes in addition to the usual suspects, onion and cilantro, who tried to pin the blame of radish, but I wasn't having it. The tacos were good, definitely a step above what we had at Xochimilco (less greasy), but not great. What stood out was that none of the three salsas that were served alongside the tacos (roja, verde and an avocado/jalapeno) had much heat, of which the tacos could have used a little. I wouldn't mind going back to Ricos, but it's a middle-of-the-road place. You can do better in the neighborhood at Tulcingo Deli and elsewhere in the city. read more

One of my favorite places for tacos in Sunset Park. The waiters here don't speak much English. The tacos here are tasty and are priced from $2.50 to $3. My favorite are the Tacos Arabes and the AL Pastor toastados. They also have entrees which is around $13 and the portion size is big enough for 2 people. The entrees come with rice, bean, salad, meat of your choice, and 4 steaming hot tortilla wraps. Definitely eat the tortilla wraps before they get cold. They don't charge tax here and I'm not sure they serve tap water so If you want water you have to order a bottle of Poland Spring. Bathroom is very small and it's average at best. read more

Definitely be sure to try the Tacos Arabicas (Arabic Tacos?), because they're incredibly juicy and packed full for tender meat and great flavor. If I can give this place zero stars I would. My family ordered from this place and we found this food to be one of the worst places we have ever ordered from. The green salsa had no salt and no flavor. The tacos de chorizo had no flavor and I found a bone in my tacos that hurt my tooth. The agua de horchata basically tasted like agua with sugar and the agua de Jamaica tasted like sour. The tacos were not separated at all so we have to open all of them one by one and they were cold. Granted it was July 4 but other reviews have stated the wait was longggg as well. I would still come back for tacos after I venture out to see other places around sunset park, but for it's good and fresh ingredients and it's authentic taste. The tacos here are great. like what you get in Mexico. They come in 2 sizes: taquitos that are what you usually get at taco trucks in NYC here go for $1.50 and the larger tacos are $2.50. I had al pastor, enchilada and cecina and were all great. The salsa / hot sauces taste like they are freshly made. The green is a bit spicier and a bit more tangy and the red has a tomato base. I had pozole soup. the small one is actually a generous portion. hearty, satisfying home style cooking that warmed me up during a "wintry mix" rainy day. I like the green walls and the orange benches. You can see the kitchen behind the counter, so you know what is going on. A TV was showing news in Spanish. There are so many new hip restaurants that are trying to reinvent traditional Mexican food in a more glamorous setting with prices that are 3 or 4 times as expensive but they fail to comfort and please your palate as the real thing. They also have great home made orchata (tastes like the real thing, not from a premade mix). I have not tasted their desserts, as tacos and pozole were very filling and satisfying. read more

Hit or miss with the tacos. The al pastor is hands down the best I've ever had. I could live off of those. The chorizo however is soggy and bland. I would avoid it. The chicken is dry and flavorless, although it is not as bad in the burrito, which is not as flavorful as how other places might make them, but there's something homey and about the subtlety of the flavors from the rice and beans. This is definitely a comfort food I want on a rainy or sick day. What stands out the most about Ricos Tacos is the al pastor. It is flavorful with crispy edges without drying out the meat. Scoop some avocado sauce or salsa verde and you are golden. The red sauce could be smokier, and I've had better, but the salsa verde is top-notch. It is tangy, and actually packs a punch unlike others I've tried. The avocado sauce is just as delicious and sitting in the booth downing tacos for a late night snack, you'll eventually end up emptying out the little sauce jars. This place is a hole in the wall, but it is a gem none the less. It is rugged and unpolished, but the tacos are authentic, and the service is no-nonsense. You will find all sorts of people here, from hipsters to teenage couples to old neighborhood geezers, all here for the warmth of company at odd hours of the night or simply the homeliness of the food. read more

When I dream of tacos, I dream of Ricos. Seriously. To be fair, I'm not from the immediate area and haven't fully sampled the neighborhood offerings. But I'm in Brooklyn often, and when I have to make the short and expensive trip back to New Jersey, the $13 Verrazano toll is always made more bearable by the prospect of eating these tacos. I fantasize about them for days before my arrival, anxiously awaiting the first tip of warm tortilla to nestle itself onto my tongue. Driving down 5th Ave. from the BQE is a torturous process. So close, yet so far! Friends who live nearby have recommended other items from the menu, but when I arrive, it is always with a hunger that only a taco can satisfy. I'd love to try the torta cubano, the enchiladas, the anything else they offer. But I cannot get past their chicken tacos, bursting at the seams with piping hot chicken, the sharp, crisp onions, and bright cilantro. A generous squeeze of lime and a slathering of salsa verde and avocado sauce catapults me into taco euphoria, breathing a relieved sigh upon taking the first bite. It's usually two bites, another couple spoonfuls of avocado sauce (seriously, where does that stuff go?) and another two bites before it's inhaled. After two tacos (usually), I kind of slump down into the booth with what can only be described as a tacogasm. I smile, my tummy smiles, and we kind of reflect on the moment we shared. It's quite beautiful, really. For me, these tacos epitomize simple, straightforward food done in a completely delicious way. Neither the food nor the decor is fussy or over-thought. The food and accompaniments are seasoned well but simply, and each of the few components is done so well that, when combined, they make something extraordinary. The chicken has a slight crispiness and nuttiness. The tortillas are piping hot and sturdy without being heavy. I've never had a taco disintegrate and fall into my lap here (not that I would hesitate to fashion my fingers into tweezers to eat the contents anyway). AND SERIOUSLY, THIS AVOCADO SAUCE. I WANT IT ALL. Keep your pico de gallo and cheese away from my tacos (this is the only time I will EVER request to keep cheese away from me). I've lived a block away for over a year now and had Rico's for the first time a couple weeks ago. I had a couple of marinated pork soft tacos. Needless to say I'll be going back again. It's just so much more flavorful than most other tacos I've had. It was sweet and juicy and almost reminded me of Chinese sweet buns. That's how good it was, it reminded me of another ethnicity's cuisine. I must take Tory's advice about the tortas though. That shall be saved for another moment in the life. read more

Antojito means little craving in Spanish, and man, do I have a craving for Ricos Tacos' quesadilla. Yeah, that's right: quesadilla. It's ironic that my favorite dish at Ricos Tacos would be a quesadilla as opposed to the namesake taco. But it's just that the quesadilla stands out against the otherwise middle-of-the-pack taco menu. Quesadilla con hongos comes as a fresh corn tortilla, grilled from homemade masa dough, crisped on the edges, stuffed with woody mushrooms, and layered with semi-soft cheese and picked strips of jalapenos. The homemade tortilla -- not too soft yet not too dry -- really adds life to this classic dish. Seriously good. Tacos are solid too, and for this reason alone, Tacos Ricos should be a stop on any Sunset Park taco crawl -- you know, for posterity's sake. I didn't dislike anything on the taco menu, but my selections of al pastor (slow cooked pork), longaniza (savory pork sausage), and enchilada (spicy pork) tasted rather similar. Soft strands of swine, softened by fatty bits -- all salted to perfection. I think the flavors could have used a bit more spice, and the tortillas were not homemade but rather storebought. Good but not superlative. With Matamoros and others around the corner, I'd be hard pressed to choose Ricos over the rest. read more

The place is small. Imagine a small hole in the wall; this place is probably that size. Little booths are crowded in the middle of the joint with a mirror on one of the walls to give you the illusion of space. Drinks are the usual taqueria fare: Jarritos (I didn't see a huge selection of them, but they had Limn and the Orange kind, which are my favorite, so I was pleased), the apple flavored stuff and regular pop. The options are not extensive: tacos, tortas, etc. Really good, quick stuff. I had a torta of the milanesa variety. My choice of meat was beef and it was delicious. The breading on the meat was nice 'n' crisp and the beef itself was relatively tender. The fixings were delicious, and it is the combination of elements within the sandwich that elevates it to such heights in my estimation: that is, a torta is more than the sum of it's parts. The combination of crispy, tender beef, creamy mayo, avocado and jalapeno that had been soaked in vinegar with its brethren, was wonderful. Also, the bolillo (bread) was lightly toasted, so that's an extra gold star. So, this place did not disappoint. It felt authentic and I'd recommend it if you're jonesin' for some authentic "low brow" Mexican food. read more

I love taco bell. My girlfriend hates it (I don't understand women..) This was our compromise. I have to say, it was pretty damn good. Considering we ate a huge sandwich as well as a bunch of other little things less than an hour before and were absolutely stuffed, we had absolutely no real good reason to come here. I guess we did for the same reason that people climb mountains. Cuz it's there. The tortillas were extremely fresh, the meat was hot and well seasoned. I got the fried pork taco and another pork taco that tasted just like slim jims! YUM!!! This gave me the brilliant idea of buying taco shells and a bunch of slim jims. I'm still working out the details in my head but, slim jim tacos are absolutely brilliant! We got 4 tacos, they were pretty small, and the total bill was $6, $8 with tip. The restaurant has 2 tables outdoors and about 6 or so indoors. It's definitely a hybrid takeout sit in joint. The television on the wall was playing this hilarious Mexican movie. I didn't understand the words, but it was one of the funnier things I've seen in a while. I was surprised I enjoyed this meal considering how full I was. So my Texpat friend has been nagging me to stop by Rico's for, like, forever now. Finally, the other night, we were alone in my car as I gave him a ride home. He looks at me and says that he's hungry and immediately I know what's coming: him: "SUNSET PARK. TACOS. PLEASE?" me: "Man, I gotta get up early tomorrow, and it's so late already." him: "It'll be quick, we'll get them to go. Plus it's only a little bit farther, just like 5 more blocks." me: "Okay, I guess, if we get them to go and it's only 5 more blocks." Well, it turned out to be more like 30 more blocks, and also even though we got them to go the process wasn't exactly rapido: each taco was cooked to order, even at 3:00 in the morning. We got two each of the al pastor and the spicy pork. Cost us about $12 altogether. Note that they are cash only and may or not speak English. I got home and stuffed one of the tacos in my mouth. Tacos taste like Taos should. Small, very fresh, tastes from Mexico, but slow service. The place is small, but that doesn't mean their food isn't good.
