Their menu is HUGE, and it was really hard to decide what to order because everything sounded so good. I ended up ordering the Paradise Crepe (crepe with pineapples, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, and strawberry yogurt) - it came with a side of hash browns & toast. Delicious! I also tried my husband's Bacado Omelet (bacon+avocado) - what a great combination! I had only one gripe: it was hotter inside the restaurant than outside! Outside it was a nice 72 degrees or so, but inside it was like 80+. Even with the fans going, I was sweating. I'm totally going to come back. It's a nice breakfast place, but if you're coming on a weekend make sure you have a reservation before you go. Last time my party of 6 had to wait about 30 min on a Sunday around noon. However, the wait wasn't too bad though since there's some benches outside and they have coffee and tea outside. One problem I had with Rick's was that the menu looks eerily similar to Stack's menu. I only noticed because I went to Stacks just two days before I went to Rick's. Even the names and ingredients in the dishes are the same... I ordered the Vegetarian Scramble, and I have to admit it definitely taste better and the ingredients were more fresh than Stacks'. I also shared a Apple Waffle, and I think the waffle was my favorite part of the meal. It's perfectly crispy on the outside but still soft on the inside. Worst Mother's Day brunch ever! In fact the experience pretty much ruined the morning. We got there a little before 11 am. I expected crazy but this was beyond normal. There was no apparent host and they seemed to arbitrarily sit the people waiting. We were finally seated outside after a 40 minute wait then proceeded to wait another 25 minutes to order. I think we could've been seated even faster if we'd asked for counter seats, but this was our first time here so we didn't know. It was extremely busy, so our server was rushed in her interactions with us, and kept forgetting to bring things like water (the glasses are tiiiiny and we didn't once get a refill) and maple syrup. Bf had the hot link omelette and I had the Italian scramble. Both were good, but nothing really special, and the hot link was really just a hot dog, which was disappointing. We also shared a bacon waffle to try, and at $9 for a single waffle, was kind of a rip. Again, it was good, but something we could definitely have made at home for half the price (at least). Perhap's one of the best things to happen to Downtown Los Altos. The only place my dad ever wants to go when I visit home, the bacon cheeseburger is this Taiwan born-American's favorite meal EVER. The food is okay, but it's really nothing special. And unlike some of the reviews we read, the portions for egg entrées are on the small side. We were told our veggie scramble was going to be made with 3 eggs-- definitely didn't seem that way (and yes I make scrambles at home a lot and know the portion sizes). The blueberry germ pancakes were good, and surprisingly filling. Thank goodness, since I was still hungry after the scramble. And the service wasn't nearly as friendly as you usually get in a diner type space like this. So all in all, it was okay. Really disappointed by the way the female manager treated me after I complained about the way the sausage was cooked. This was around noon today, I ordered pork breakfast sausage to be "really well done." My fault for assuming the sausage would spend more time on the grill; instead, it was flash fried in a grease basket and served to me bubbled up and disgusting, with the sausage centers filled with the basket grease. I thought, no way because the food was supposed to be really good here. There is no way they can expect anyone to eat something like this. This is not what "we'll done" means. So, I made my complaint to my very nice waiter, and the manager arrived to my table shortly after. Prior to the food arriving, I had situated myself and my 2 young kids (1 year old and 4 year old) to sit in the empty banquet room, so that we do not disturb the other patrons. When the manager arrived to our table, I showed her the sausage and told her I do not want to eat this, that it is disgusting. She just looked at me and said nothing and crossed her arms; so, I went on to say that I do not want to pay for this. The manager was smiling at me ostentatiously, a smirk on her face and STILL said nothing. It was pretty obvious she did not want me to suggest what she should do here, as I was asking her to take it off the bill because the sausage was not edible. She had an extremely pretentious attitude; and, at this point I said I would take a picture and post a review about this whole experience on Yelp. She then said, "Are you threatening me?" Lol. I can not help but think she was acting this way because no one else was in the room to witness her attitude, as we were seated in the empty banquet room. I was a restaurant manager for several years. There is no reason why a $12 plate of food would cause so much strife between a restaurant manager and a customer. I told her I was ready to leave and would like the check. The waiter then delivered my check with the $12 plate of food still on the check, of course. Oh my. Totally amazing brunch! This place was bustling practically the whole time I was here on a Saturday afternoon. My friend and I came here around 1 for an extremely late brunch. Our server was really helpful when it came to ordering because the menu is so extensive and overwhelming, haha. I ended up ordering the hot links omelet. If you love spicy things, this is what you should order! Also the waffles are delicious as well. We ended up ordering that on top of our own dishes and splitting it. No regrets on the food coma afterwards. Also- beware. They charge an extra dollar for cream cheese! The interior decor is inviting with a forest green color scheme, blue accent lighting and flowers upon flowers! It's a spacious restaurant with a lofted ceiling. The skylights allow natural light to pour in from above. Food Review -- The Blue Germ is a delicious stack of plate-sized pancakes! Served with housemade blueberry jam and a heaping pat of butter, this one might have you feeling a little guilty... The pancakes are fluffy, sweet, and melt in your mouth delicious, stuffed with a generous amount of blueberries. If pancakes aren't your thing, try one of their skillets which are rich and cheesy. The Mountaineer Skillet was one of the best diner-style meals I've had in a long long time. It seemed pretty busy and we were sure we wouldn't get sat for a long time, but the owner was really nice about it and managed to pull together a big table in the back patio. Crab Omelette- A little dry, but good. Lupine Crepe- just ok. Didn't love the flavor combo of chives, sour creme and bacon. Lumberjack Pancakes- HUGE portions. Size of the entire plate. Busy and popular place for weekend breakfast/brunch. Many of the people looked to have been locals which is a good thing. I was so looking forward to coming here to try their Monte Cristo sandwich. Mind you, I knew full well that this wasn't the "real deal" because it wasn't deep fried. We were quickly seated and provided menus. I immediately noticed the sandwich was not listed but recalled it was on their website. So, I asked our server and she informed me that it is only served on the weekdays. What?! That's weird since it should be fairly easy to make since they grilled the egg dipped/battered sandwich instead of deep frying it. So, I went with my alternative, The Cowboy Skillet. Our meals (Hawaiian pancakes, Bacon waffles, and my skillet) were quickly served. Boy, their kitchen staff must be very efficient! Everything tasted fine though I preferred the house potatoes at Original Pancake House instead. Other than that, no issues to complain about or anything to really rave about. Came here after a tough workout looking for some nourishment for my exhausted body. Another friend of mine liked this place so I figured I'd tag along and join him for breakfast. Walking into the restaurant, the waitresses were all dressed up as ladybugs with wings attached to their back. Seems like they usually wear something decorative. Sat down and looked over the menu. The menu looked quite varied with definitely a large selection of food to choose from and I ended up picking up the steak and eggs, substituting the potatoes and bagel for fruit and steamed veggies. The food came out good, nothing too entirely special. I would've personally been able to cook that same breakfast for much less and would've tasted better. This establishment is located in downtown Los Altos, so there's mainly just street parking. A few tables outside on the sidewalk, most of their seating is in the front of the cafe while there are additional seats in the back. Pretty busy establishment, there's typically a wait and it's a bit noisy. My BF likes to go to cafes/diners to eat and relax so I had this place bookmarked because I read that they roast their own beans in house. You'll see the pretty roaster next to the cashier right when you walk in. We came in on 10/19/2014 around 1PM on a lazy Sun for breakfast. Luckily it was only about a 10min wait for us. Our Order: Full Stack Hawaiian Pancakes: ($9.84) Fresh Pineapples, Bananas, Macadamia Nut & Coconut Shreds Crab Scramble: ($12.95) Dungeness Crab, Avocado, Tomatoes, & onions topped w/cheddar-jack cheese with a side of Hollandaise Sauce. Served with potatoes and toast Paradise Dream Smoothie: ($4.75) 20 oz. Orange Juice, Banana, Pineapple, Coconut and Vanilla Yogurt House Coffee: ($2.49) Free refills I was worried that the Hawaiian Pancakes would have too much stuff going on. There were fresh bananas, fresh pineapples, coconut shreds and chunks of macadamia nuts on top of the pancakes. The pancake also had bananas in the batter! The pancakes were just thick enough to hold everything together but wasn't too dense. I surprisingly really enjoyed the pancakes and like them a lot better than the Macadamia Pancakes from Stacks. The scramble had a mix of ingredients that wasn't too sparse, just enough. The crab meat wasn't imitation crab but tasted a bit cool so not sure how fresh since the crab meat should be warm. The potatoes were served in large shreds (almost hash-like but not crispy) which I prefer because I'm not a fan of hashes (too oily for me). Didn't try the Hollandaise Sauce. I had the Paradise Dream Smoothie and it was so refreshing and bright. Really glad I ordered this instead of a milkshake. When you get the house coffee, they bring out a thermal carafe for you to use. It was a decent roast but not something I'd HAVE to come back for. Didn't seem very strong enough because it didn't keep the BF awake too much. Service was just ok. The waitress was a bit hard to flag down since we weren't able to spot her a lot of the times. I waived to him, which he acknowledged, but walked the other way and never came back. Saw a 3rd waiter and asked for our check, but it never came either. After waiting a while, we decided had to go up to the counter to pay where it was the 3rd waiter we asked for the check, he never acknowledged or apologize that no one brought us our check. I understand restaurants are probably short on staffing, but this is no excuse for total lack of service. Don't seat customers in areas that cannot be covered. The meatballs were moist, and there was plenty of mozzarella so that biting into the sandwich produced some nice cheesy strings. Unfortunately, I had to knock off a few stars for the service and the atmosphere. You couldn't tell who was an employee so flagging down someone to finally take your order was a actually quite difficult. Was looking for a good place to grab a late breakfast before exploring the downtown area of Los Altos. Google said it was a solid bet, so we stepped inside. The menu is very breakfast-centric with lunch options. American style fare. We ordered a meat omelette, hash browns, chicken sausage, and a pancake. Service was a little slow. It seemed like the restaurant might be too large for the amount of servers working today. This happens, so no worries. The omelette was tasty. All of the meats flavorful and well proportioned for the size. I loved it. The hash was shaved potato, which was quite good. Just enough salt, and not fried to death. The pancake was enormous. A single one enough to match a double stack, possibly a triple stack, of regular pancakes. Moist, fluffy, and delicious. The chicken sausage was disappointing. Nearly flavorless and watery, as though frozen and cooked quickly. We had a chance to speak with one of the owners who was walking by checking on patrons. She was an absolute delight, and was kind enough to remove the sausage from the check when we shared our enjoyment of everything but that. She also informed us she roasts the coffee there daily herself, which I suspected because of the giant roaster just off the side of the door. The coffee was VERY good, and we bought a pound of beans to take home. You, madam, are excellent at what you do. The coffee is smooth and not too dark. Very good for those with acid troubles in the stomach. All in all a good experience. We'll be back next time we're about downtown in the morning. read more

Great service but I have mixed feelings about the food. We ordered eggs blackstone, salmon eggs benedict, and crepes lupine. I picked eggs blackstone since I was craving bacon and it's basically an eggs benedict with bacon instead of ham. However, it was quite disappointing that the bacon was really tough, not in a burnt kind of way, but in a someone left it too long on the counter kind of way. All the items were beautifully presented and my friends enjoyed their meals, so I feel they probably would have given a better rating than me. I really liked our waitress though, she checked on us many times. I'd likely return again but probably order something different. read more

I came yesterday morning with my co workers for breakfast and we did have an awesome time. The menu is great, the prices are great, service can step it up, and food was delicious. The portions are pretty big and is good enough for a single person to get full off of. I love how they serve bagels rather than toast and I also like how they butter them up. The thing that irritated me was the mimosas. I clearly asked one of the owners if the mimosas were unlimited and I even explained if that meant getting free refills and she said yes. Now when our bill came to pay up, I noticed they charged me for two glasses rather than one so I talked it out. I didn't want to go any further because obviously there was a language barrier mixup. It's whatever, I just wished this could've been better explained and set on the menu rather than for customers to ask. Bottom line the food is good and the portions are on point. First timer at Rick's. The wait was short and the waitress was quick. I had a Greek salad with hash brown and a side of fruit and a small cup of apple juice. It was very flavorful. My friend had the huevos rancheros and I had a bite. The flavors were amazing. I'm thinking of getting it the next time I'm in town. It brought both black and refried beans. And the avocado mixed in, made it that much better. I thought the small apple juice was extremely small. I suggest a bigger cup size for the small portion. We were greeted by a very friendly host and hostess and seated at a table that could fit more than a party of 3. The crepe was really good because they used real crab and the hollandaise sauce was of a good consistency, not watery. The hash browns would have been better if they were crispier though. I liked how the bagel was toasted and buttered. Service was good. Our waitress didn't have a problem having to grab us ketchup or cream cheese for my bagel. Even another waitress who happened to pass by our table asked us if we needed anything or if we were doing ok. We told our waitress to split our checks beforehand and so when it came time to pay she each handed us our check and we went to pay the cashier up front. My total came out to $18 with tip, which seemed expensive for just one person. But, I guess it also depends on what you ordered and if you had any extras or not. For example, I was charged $0.99 for the cream cheese and I didn't know until I got the check. The waitress should have let me know that it was extra because I feel like condiments shouldn't be at any cost because they go hand-in-hand with a meal. I mean you wouldn't charge someone for salt and pepper. I'd come back if I had more money to spare. It is a decent place for brunch. Skip the mints. Want something else? Check. They've got it all. Hash browns and the oh-so-awesome butter coated bagel makes whatever omelet/scramble dish even better than what any other breakfast place can offer. Coffee lovers, rejoice. It's a freaking buffet for coffee, and the waitresses keep on coming. Drink up for some Hazelnut or French Cream! Awesome simple yet hearty breakfast food with ample seating and great coffee- everything you'd want in a breakfast place! The place was obviously popular so waiting is standard. I came here with my mother the day after Christmas so the wait wasn't too bad and we were seated towards the back. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros while my mom ordered a basic breakfast with a side pancake. Their coffee is amazing and fresh with a deep roast flavor that isn't too overwhelming or acrid tasting. My eggs were cooked PERFECTLY which I really appreciated and the food portions were more than generous. Nothing was burnt, over-salted, over-buttered or greasy as you'd find in other breakfast places. I loved their potatoes! The house potatoes were like a thick hash brown with wide pieces. We were promptly seated outside at 11:30, waited for about 20mins before we could order our food. Got our coffee and mimosa in a few minutes but no sign of food. After multiple reminders the waiter comes to our table at 12:45, and asks us to repeat our order saying there was a mix up in the kitchen. Waited for another 20mins and went inside and asked the hostess (who was not customer friendly at all with absolutely no smile on her face) who told us we would get our food in 5 mins. Waited for another 10mins and went back in and asked the hostess to give us our check so we can walk away. She immediately goes to the register with no hesitation or an apology and writes up a check for our drinks which we paid and walked away to go find another place to eat at around 1:30pm. I like Rick's cafe and it's a viable downtown alternative -- and more modern version of -- the Los Altos Coffee Shop (which, while fun and good, is more a trip back to 1950s diner America). Rick's is a breakfast / lunch only place. The decor is modern. The ceilings are nice and high. They have a counter if you're solo or just like eating at the counter. Seating is mostly big booths, but I think there were a few tables as well. Service is good. Menu-wise, they have a strong selection of breakfast stuff (e.g., omelettes, pancakes, crepes) and a good selection at lunch (sandwiches, paninis, salads, burgers). The smoothies are nice and light. Overall, a strong review for a nice place to have lunch in downtown Los Altos (where, frankly, there's not much competition particular if you're not talking Chinese/Japanese/Mexican). read more

The whole downtown was really quiet with most of the open for business restaurants empty while all of a sudden a crowd appeared on the curbside as we made a turn on the road. That's Rick's Cafe. With free coffee offered outside, a few families were waiting patiently for seating. It didn't take us long to get a table for two and the menu offered a variety of choices for our hungry stomaches. We tried their lupine crepe with bacon, sausage, avacado, onion and cheese, and the chuck wagon skillet. Both served with potato and toasted bagels. I love their bagels. They were perfectly toasted with butter, hot and crispy. Not many places will do this value add on bagels. They also offered maple syrup, two kinds of jams as standard condiments, perfect for the bagels. The potatos on the other hand was a bit disappointing. It seemed too healthy for me, thinly cut, cooked mostly with water and parsley, they were a bit tasteless and soft, almost felt like eating noodle, not the heavy-flavor roasted or harsh kind I was expecting. The crepe was good, different ingredients contrasted with interesting flavors and textures. The skillet was a bit bland, but still OK. Service was nice but too bad the juices they offer were not freshly squeezed but bottled. They have a coffee machine on display at the entrance, meaning they roast their own coffee. Looks can be deceiving. I thought this was just a little coffee shop in downtown Los Altos but inside the place is huge. There are a few outdoor tables, then inside several tables, a wall of booths, then a counter and then some more tables. There may even have been even more tables out back. It's crazy. I decided to stop here before work on a Saturday as a treat. I got here early enough so it wasn't busy yet. Every other time I go by here there seems to be a line. I ordered the Chuck Wagon Skillet with potatoes, cheese, eggs, sausage, hot links, mushrooms and onions. It was served with a side of salsa. It was very good and very big. This was a huge meal. Most of the meals come with a bagel. I got toast instead. The table/counter has hot sauce, ketchup and really good preserves. Seriously, the preserves are amazing. You must try them. The service was fine. I like that coffee and water are served in individual pitchers/carafes on the table. It's a lot like Stacks or iHop in that way. It's very convenient. I went here with my friends and I didn't have any preference where we sat. The hostess brings us to the very back of the restaurant in a sun room where no one else was sitting. Mind you we were the only people of color in the whole restaurant. We had to find the waitress and ask her to take our order, and the hospitality was horrible. I don't even know her name and it was a poor experience. The food was not good either. The fruit had been cut with an onion knife and the smoothies were nasty. A good environment with decently quick service and great food. I ordered a crepe which was quite enjoyable, though very simple. The home fries that came with the meal and the bagel were nice complements to the sweet crepe. The home fries were excellent, and is a signature of Rick's cafe, where they slice up the potatoes very thin and bake it from there. It was a nice twist to the classic home fries. read more

My first time at Rick's and I was extremely satisfied with everything. I came here on a Sunday for brunch and parking was pretty easy to find. I never go to Los Altos and this popular brunch spot is located in downtown and there are lots of cool boutiques and other food spots nearby. I'm usually not a brunch person, but I'm always down for brunch crepes! I ordered the Lupine Crepe which was bacon, cheese, avocado, mushroom, ham, chicken sausage, sour cream and chives. The crepe itself was so soft which I liked! I haven't had a crepe with a perfect texture in a while since I prefer crepes with a softer skin than a crunchy skin. The order came with a bagel and potatoes. The potatoes were perfectly cooked an not hard at all. Staff was very accommodating. I came a little late after my party ordered their food, but our food all came together and it wasn't even a lot wait! There was a lot of seating inside too. Prices are very decent and portions were fair. They also have cool tin cups for their water that is for both cold and hot water so you won't burn yourself if you are drinking hot water. read more
