A richly rewarding experience is found at Rich Table. Located in the heart of Hayes Valley on the corner of Gough and Oak Streets in San Francisco, Rich Table has become a local institution since they opened in the summer of 2012, and all credit goes to chefs and owners Sarah and Evan Rich, who have used their training and experience from local restaurants such as Quince, Coi, and Michael Mina to create their own niche in the well regarded San Francisco dining scene. So popular is Rich Table that for two years since their opening they received a well deserved Michelin star for their elevated take on New American comfort cuisine served in a warm yet dimly lit room that features relaxed barn-chic charm which make it perfect for their style of cooking. I had the opportunity to dine here when they originally opened when a friend and I managed to get reservations for early in the evening on a weekend and what I remember was the warm authentic dishes coming from their open kitchen and the fact that we were really squeezed in their intimate dining room. What hasn't changed since my most recent visit is the fresh ingredients that are highlighted throughout their menu, as on top of their menu they proudly state "Go to the Market, See What's Good & Cook It". What also hasn't changed after all these years is the fact that reservations are still hard to come by as our large party of six people were able to get a reservation at 8:45 p.m. on a weekend evening. We originally had our appetites piqued for their Large Group Family Style Menu, which was $95 per guest for a four course meal and lasts 3 hours, and after we managed to move our dinner to another time, we tried calling their phone number to see if we could still enjoy their pre-fixe meal, our phone calls were never returned.
Luckily, even without the four course meal, we were able to split many items from their menu family-style and still save a few bucks when our bill was presented. Our service led by our main server Ronald made us feel like we were at home dining with family, as it was he who recommended that we order three courses each from the three main sections of their menu, which consisted of first courses, pastas, and main courses. After seeing some dishes right behind our table with their open kitchen, we decided to order their Red Little Gems served with Roasted Beets, Pickled Jidori Eggs and Horseradish. We also ordered their Burrata served with Saag, Full Belly Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Roti; and from their Market Bites section of their menu, two servings of their Blue Fin Toro Toast, which was their Japanese Milk Bread topped with Yuzu Kosho. From their pasta section of their menu, we ordered their Tonnarelli served "Cacio E Pepe" style with sea urchin and Idiazabal; their Baked Rigatoni which was topped with aged beef, Cowgirl Creamery Wagon Wheel cheese, and pickled spring onions; and their Linguini, which was topped with Manila Clams, "First of the Season" Asparagus, and Daikon.
For our third course, we ordered their Pork Chop served with Thompson Grape-Char Siu, broccoli, and Rutabaga mustard; their MacFarland Trout served with Blood Orange Cioppino, fennel, pickled ginger, and Douglas Fir croutons; and their 21-Day Dry Aged Ribeye served "Animal Style" served with caramelized onions and wedge potatoes. Our meal was served delicately from their team in a progressive way as if we were partaking in a culinary journey through someone's private kitchen, which in this case were the Rich's and their restaurant's Chef de Cuisine Gizela Ho, who we could see over our shoulder supervising and tasting every dish that came out of their kitchen. The highlights for me were definitely their Tonnarelli and Baked Rigatoni from their pasta section of their menu, and their Pork Chop from their entrée section of their menu. For dessert we enjoyed their Chocolate Panna Cotta, which was topped with a white chocolate crumble and whipped cream, and since we were celebrating a birthday of which we put in our reservation, they treated us to their Salted Mint Chocolate Sable served with milk ice cream and a chocolate cremeux, which is a dessert featured on their family style dining menu, which gave us the best of both worlds. Our bill came to be about $448 with tax and a 20 percent automatic gratuity included, which was a considerable amount for a considerable amount of amazing food for all to enjoy. At Rich Table, we were treated like family with an exceptionally crafted meal served with thoughtful attention to detail. A perfect meal enjoyed for the perfect evening. Here's to hoping that Rich Table enjoys their well-deserved kudos and success with additional enterprises for years to come! read more
