I ordered the tofu bowl. You get one veggie for free, I chose the cucumber. There are also three spice levels - no spice, medium, and hot. The bowl has two large scoops of rice and the protein is placed on top then tomatoes, green onions, and the soy vinegar. The tofu came with bbq sauce. The tofu was firm and lightly seasoned. I didn't think I would use the bbq sauce but the tofu needed a little more flavor. I couldn't finish the rice because the bottom of the bowl has a pool of soy vinegar and it was too vinegary for me. There are not many seating options. Eco friendly bowls and cutlery. Staff are friendly. Plenty of free parking.

11/10 BBQ is amazing. Tasty, moist and seasoned. Rice bowl has perfectly cooked rice. One of the best lunch spots in Michigan

Fast casual vibe. The meat was tender and flavorful. Tried the short rib and chicken, but will go back for brisket and burgers (early so they haven't sold out!). The sushi rice base paired well with the flavors in the meat. Friendly service. Wish they had more sauce options.

First time at this location, their bbq meat taste didn't change from their original location. What did change was the prices and looks like the veggies that were included is now upcharge. Very simple layout, definitely a take out location, but they have seats along the window for dine-in option. The service was good, ordered and food was ready in few minutes. Wasn't fan of the "tipping" when paying, but I guess everyone has to get one board. I got the brisket, ribs and pork belly with the extra veggies for all (all med), came out to like $64 for three bowls. Favorite was the ribs and pork belly, the brisket was bit dry.

I saw Amanda L's review of Ricewood recently and knew I had to check it out while in town. This location is in a little suburban strip mall type spot, they do have some seating but we saw quite a bit of takeout happening. The guy taking our order was really helpful with suggestions as it was our first time. I went with the brisket rice bowl, medium spice, and added kimchi. Nate got the pulled pork sandwich. We also got the sesame cucumbers and a side of fries. They threw in a drink for free which was really nice. (Although they didn't have any diet options at the time. I just got some soda water and mixed in a little lemonade.) The food came out and I was shocked at the portion of the rice bowl specifically. I got a ton of brisket for $17 and the bowl felt like it weighed five pounds. We definitely could have split it (and probably should have)! The brisket was pretty tender and there were about 7 perfect slices. The rice was cooked pretty well and seasoned nicely and the kimchi was really good. (Better than the kimchi I had at Miss Kim!) The spice level was perfect for me, not too hot but a nice kick. I had some of the pork from the sandwich and it was tender and not dry. The sesame cucumbers were just okay, I don't think we'd get those again. And the fries were a massive portion. I really like the idea of the Korean/BBQ fusion (not to be confused with Korean BBQ) and think this concept would do really well in Grand Rapids. They have vegetarian options - I'd love to try the Szeuchuan tofu!

I've been dying to try Ricewood after all the buzz I have heard about it. I came to the Maple location, which is definitely more of a "to-go" sort of place, with just a few bar counter style seating along the wall and window perimeters of the store. My friend and I were meeting up for a quick lunch though, so it worked perfectly for us! Ricewood's menu is pretty straightforward and simple, which I love to see, because that typically means they know what they're good at and they don't need to bother with anything else and I'm here to CONFIRM that that's the case! I ordered the brisket rice bowl, which is definitely their signature. The brisket is so PERFECT! So tender, easy to pull apart or bite into, without being too mushy. The vinegary rice pairs so well with it and with all the other fixings in the bowl, which you can customize on what you want to add or leave out of it. They give you so much within a bowl of theirs, it's super impressive and I had leftovers to take home with me. Heating it up in the microwave with an ice cube did the trick and it tasted just as good at home! For eating right then and there, they basically have rice bowls with different kinds of proteins (including tofu for vegans and vegetarians!) and sandwiches, which subs the rice for buns and has all the same protein options as well. My friend ordered the sandwich and it was also massive and definitely way more messy, so it just depends on what you're in the mood for! Another super cool thing Ricewood offers is their meats by the pound that you can take to go! I was sooo tempted to get some of their delicious brisket! It's all cooked and glorious and I'm sure they would probably provide reheating/general serving instructions if you asked as you took the meat home, but I definitely think I'll be back to take advantage of this option in the near future! I haven't been able to stop thinking about that brisket!!

Massive pulled pork bowl with kimchi, pickled onions, and some spicy sauce on the side

Ricewood is an American BBQ Asian fusion restaurant, which sounds a little odd at first, but is actually genius and delicious. It's located in a strip mall and is small with limited indoor seating. We came pretty late in the day so they were out of most of the meats, which wasn't the worst thing in the world because they did have pulled pork. The guy at the counter was very apologetic and went out of his way to make sure the dietary restrictions I have were accommodated. I got a pulled pork bowl with kimchi and pickled onions and was fully not prepared for how big it was. It had to have been 1-2lbs of food in that bowl. I ate maybe half of it before I started going into a food coma and saved the rest for later. It made great leftovers! I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Ann Arbor, but earlier in the day to try some different meats!

This is partly a review for Ricewood (Maple) and partly a review for Ricewood hosted Meogjia pop up events (which I think have happened twice now!). I stopped by here yesterday for the second Meogjia pop up, and am so happy that Ricewood hosts these, supporting local/small businesses - Meogjia who sources from other local/small businesses Q Bakehouse and Dave Makes Pasta. All the food at these pop ups are always a hit. This time I got the Korean Bolognese Lasagna and the Taiwanese 3 Cup Chicken Meatball Sub. Yum and yum. Last time I got a Pimento Cheese Bulgogi Sando and Polenta Cake Dakbokkeomtang. Everything we've tried has been SO tasty with a real depth of flavor. Part of the proceeds also go to Ozone House. Shoutout Meogjia and props to Ricewood for hosting these! The only bummer (though totally makes sense logistically) is that I can't also get Ricewood while I'm there for these pop ups! Would love to take home Ricewood BBQ while I'm at it, as their meat is SO GOOD. The Ricewood Rice Bowls are insanely tasty, and unique compared to other BBQ joints in the area given the Asian flavor fusion. Every meat I've tried has been tasty, but I especially love the tender brisket. And I love all the add ons. Plus the Maple location has waffle fries!! I've also ordered just the meat (priced by weight) to go as well, which has really elevated my at home bowls/salads.

ABSOLUTELY GAS! Litterally went here and cured my depression. The food is a huge plus and is so delicious that I actually attempt to save some for later. Their service is impeccable as well. There is a very short wait for the food but it's awesome because you could Shazam their whole playlist and be ready for the next event you throw. Literally have never had a complaint from here. GET THE FRIES! Best fries in the city!!

Maxwell L.

Very similar to the Ricewood I had at York but much more calm and chill. The cashier and employees were all super smiley and friendly. We got the ribs and brisket over rice. While not cheap, they made up for it in quantity. Each bowl comes heaping with rice and in different spice levels. I made the mistake of getting hot, and it is def no joke! The barbecue is super flavorful and yummy. The ribs had a meaty bite, and the brisket was super tender (my favorite meat)! Although, I def had to take regular water breaks because the spice was pretty intense. Don't let anyone tell you Ann Arbor doesn't have good BBQ!

Came here with some friends for takeout . They said this was the best brisket they'd ever had so we had to check it out. I got a brisket sandwich and my wife got a brisket rice bowl. My sandwich was just ok. All my brisket was burnt ends and just not that great. My wife had extra brisket and shared a piece with me and it was quite good, perfect texture and better flavor. If it wasn't for her meal, I'd say 3 stars. Put the good brisket on the sandwich! read more

The brisket rice bowl was sooooo good! The brisket was super tender and moist. It was just fatty enough to not be too much. Having it on sushi rice was genius! The rice vinegar in the rice paired so well with the meat! It also helped to portion control how much meat I was eating. The only thing I would recommend is adding some veggies to the bowl. Then I would eat it every meal! We came here on a Friday night, and were able to get in and out pretty quick. The staff was very friendly. I will definitely be back for more! read more

We catered from Ricewood for a high school graduation open house and the food was such a hit! We worked with Darin and it was such a smooth and easy process from beginning til end. We ordered the beef brisket (the big time favorite of many of our guests), Szechuan tofu and chicken, a couple trays of Mac and Cheese and the rice bowls. This included 3 different sauces, chopped tomatoes and green onions. We had plenty of food and leftovers for more than 100 guests and made lots of fried rice for leftovers. I had several guests wanting catering information because of how happy they were with the food. We've also been here for just a quick meal and the service and food are always great. Thank you Darin and team for such delicious food and a wonderful catering experience! read more

Tried this place out recently. The waffle fries were great, but there is a house soy sauce they dump on every bowl. Neither of us liked it, and it never goes away, even when we added in other sauces. The meat was okay. It tastes a little flat, and none of the extras we put on helped. Overall, this seems like the corporatification of a fusion BBQ + Asian bowl restaurant, and they do neither of them good enough to come back for more. read more

Very consistent product. I flip between the different types of protein for my bowl, and it all has been good. I enjoy the Asian - BBQ fusion. For example, their kimchi complements the brisket really well and cuts through the fattiness in a really good way. Service is always on point. They actually take the time to learn your name and seek actively to make sure you are happy. Side bonus is they have one of the best soda machines in town. read more

One of our daughters has raved about this place since they were just a food truck and we finally went to the restaurant. Not much seating, but there was brisk carry out business. I got the pulled pork bowl and my husband got the brisket bowl. I hindsight we could have split a bowl, but then we wouldn't have tried two types! Both were very yummy. The pork belly rice bowl was very moist and tender with a large portion of rice underneath. I went with the recommended chili crisps and ordered it with a medium sauce which had enough heat that didn't keep it from losing flavor. The rice bowl had enough leftovers for the next day. This place is absolutely dreadful. The first time I went, the meat was dry and the bowls (all three) were so sour. There was no balance at all and they are terrible at smoking meat. The second time I went, the same exact thing happened. I actually couldn't even finish the bowls the second time because they were even more sour. This place is honestly just a trendy place that doesn't really know how to craft food so that it is tender and well-balanced flavor-wise. People rave about it because most people follow trends. If you care about having a well-crafted, balanced meal, you should go somewhere else. Also, the first time I went I had to wait so long to get a small thing of ketchup that my fries were cold. I was told the ketchup was on the counter. Went to the counter and it wasn't there. Informed them and they said they would grab it right away. Then I see them helping new customers instead. Several minutes go by, and I ask again. Again, the same thing happens. I inform them again after several minutes, and a guy comes out and puts a thing down on the table and gives the most in-genuine "sorry". I couldn't even try to enjoy my meal (which was so bad it wouldn't have been enjoyed anyway) read more

I have been going to Ricewood for some time now, and it is about time for me to give them some LOVE! Quite honestly, everything we have had there has been a delight to eat!! From the brisket, to the burnt ends, wings, smash burger, pulled pork, and of course their fries...we've enjoyed it all!! Something to remember, smash burgers are Fridays and sometimes Saturday, with the wings coming on Saturdays. The bowls are great, but I am more of a sandwich person! When they say spicy, they mean spicy!! Lastly, I would say the guys who work there are pretty cool dudes. Super friendly guys and they certainly enjoy what they do!! Ricewood is a place I highly recommend, and get there on the early side on Fridays, they can run out of burgers read more

First time eating at Ricewood. Ordered the brisket rice bowl and a pork belly rice bowl, the latter with chili crisp added. $15 each and it was plenty of food. The brisket was fork tender - to nit-pick, I found it a little dry - and the pork belly just melt in your mouth. I normally pass on rice when ordering with Indian food but this version, with a soy-vinegar sauce, was delicious. Service was fast and friendlier than at almost any other Ann Arbor restaurant/take-out that I've been to. I'll be back and will add more of the sides to the bowl. read more

Used to love this place. Been going since food truck and 1st in line was free. Since I don't live that close or would not be able to eat till after work, I wojld sometimes ask if could get a sandwich deconstructed. Gabe, Frank, were always cool. I don't know what happened, but called up to Maple Store, and inquired about meatloaf sammie and dude answering was like nope. Said we are open till 8 so if you want to eat late come get it late. First I work in Ann Arbor but don't live here, so I would need to get while in town. Second these sandwiches are not premade, what is the big deal with putting my meat on the side so my bun does not become paper mache. After paying we took a seat and waited a few minutes for the food to arrive. When it came out we were given a choice of sauces and we elected to try a couple. Now for the reason we went. The brisket was tender, moist , and well smoked. They use a dry rub on both the brisket and the pork and it works well for both meats we tried. The ribs were also tender and tasty and done just the way I like them-bite off the bone. Ribs are overcooked in my opinion when they "fall off the bone" because they aren't ribs at that point! Being from Texas, we complemented them before we left and even gave another customer a quick opinion of how good the barbecue was. You may note that I'm not reviewing any sides because if the meat is as good as this was you don't need any sides. Their sauce is good, not too sweet and they have a sweeter option as well as a hot (habanero) sauce that is also good. If you need a good barbecue fix and you are in Ann Arbor you can't go wrong with Satchel's.

Next time we will just do the hot pot because there's so many options for it. Everything was fresh and clean, we were very pleased and thought the food was delicious. We told our waiter it was our first time there and he explained everything but it was really fast. We were able to eventually figure things out, but we made a mess. The pricing was a little confusing, but it's an all you can eat place and we expected it would be on the higher end and would have to pay extra to take leftovers home. We definitely plan to return!

I went back to the sauce/food station to see what they had and by the time I came back, the waiter brought the water. After our tablet was unlocked, we started our order. Their marinated meats were way too sweet for me. The prime brisket had no fat, thus very chewy. Couldn't tell the difference between the beef bulgogi and spicy beef bulgogi. The person bringing out meat dropped a lot on the floor while pushing the cart or dropped them on the cart. As for the meat options, if you want the value for your money, I would recommend the following: - Hanger Steak - Angus Chuck Flap Tail - Finger Ribs - Pork Cheek - Short Ribs (marinated) - does have a lot of fat on them - KPOT Steak (we didn't get any) If its your first time with friends, it worth trying all the meat. You do have 2 hour limit, so if you have someone in your group that loves to talk, tell them to shut up and eat :) As for the sauce bar area, they had six hot food items, would skip them... the sauces, the ssam jang was not your typical ssam jang... would recommend you make your own sauce... kimchi was super sweet. I would recommend the pickled radish to be used with your lettuce for lettuce wrap. Wasn't a fan of the interior with their ambient lighting.. while it wasn't a huge hinderance to walk around, it was bit annoying lol. Overall, decent AYCE Kbbq, meat quality is decent, nothing special, but worth the experience once.

The Driveway Plate gets you 6 wings, a biscuit, celery, carrots, and blue cheese dressing (don't you DARE ask for ranch or you'll end up on the wall of shame). The wings are perfectly cooked staying tender and moist inside with generous amount of sauce. There are several delicious flavors to choose from. The dudes working are chill, friendly, and bring real Buffalo, NY roots to A2. They're happy to answer questions and point you in a direction. Be prepared for a wait at prime times and you'll need to either eat outside (picnic tables and a few other tables & chairs) or get it to go, because there is no inside seating (or room to wait for your order either). This is odd because the food is good, the prices are decent, and service came with a smile. Enter under the Mash awning and turn left. This is in the former back/overflow room for Blue Tractor. Head to the counter to order, grab your silverware and drink, and take your number to a table to wait. The food comes out quickly. We ordered chips and guacamole to start. At first it's in your face with a combination of lime and salt, but after the second chip it's delicious. I do wish the guacamole and tomatoes were chopped into smaller pieces, but the flavor is stellar. The brisket on my taco was very fatty. Don't get me wrong, I know fat is flavor and the bark on their brisket is possibly heaven sent, but I can only take the texture of fat to a certain extent and I'm grossed out. I left some of the fat on my tray. It pairs well with the roasted tomato salsa. The pulled pork taco is excellent. The ingredients work well together, with the combination of crunchy and chewy textures and the pickled pepper relish with tangy lime slaw creating a wonderful flavor profile. When we return I'll only order one taco if we get chips and guacamole. Enjoy!

3, bordering on 4 stars as I know that they're brand new and hopefully will improve some things…read moreover time. I've gone 3 times now for happy hour. I'll start with what I would consider to be the areas to improve: 1. They have an email signup form promoted on the website that advertises a free taco when you sign up. Great! I tried to do it and when I asked about it there they were like, yeah we might send out discounts or coupons in the future. Just a wildly misleading promo. 2. The pricing for happy hour margs is odd. On the website it advertised 36 oz margs for $5, and when I went in I was asked what size I wanted. I said "whatever is on the happy hour menu" and I was told that both sizes were. What does that mean? Both of them are $5? 3. 2 out of the 3 times I went the margs were served on the rocks instead of frozen because the machine hadn't frozen them yet 4. It seems like there are some major kitchen issues with getting food out on time - I overheard a table waiting a really long time for their tacos Now for the positives: 1. Margs are great, and even though the pricing is very odd and unclear what is certain is that they're a good deal 2. Nice people working 3. Good hot sauces (hell yeah tapatio and Valentina!!!) 4. I like the system of ordering at a register and getting to choose your own table, makes it a more casual/fluid dining experience imo. 5. Guac is great and they are not stingy with the chips, that's for sure. Overall there are definitely some major kinks to work out, but I think it definitely has 4-5 star potential.

One suggestion would be to communicate the ordering process more clearly. We sat at our table for about 20 minutes before realizing that we were supposed to order in the back. A simple sign or announcement explaining how ordering works would make the experience much smoother. I also think more marketing and promotion could really help bring in a larger crowd. It seemed like the smaller audience made some of the comedians uncomfortable, and a bigger turnout could create a much better atmosphere for both the comedians and the audience. As far as the comedy itself, Jade Locke's set was disappointing. Everyone else did a good job with the small crowd lol Rather than focusing on jokes and comedy, much of Jades time was spent discussing her political views. I found some of the comments to be ignorant and disrespectful, and it took away from the overall experience. I came to enjoy a comedy show and would have preferred the focus to remain on comedy rather than political commentary/complaining/degrading. The wind was too high to use the patio, so husband's son and I sat in the bright bar area. It is a lovely restaurant, and our server was very friendly and efficient. We started with the brisket chili because we just had to try this no bean super flavorful meaty cup. It was actually an oval ramekin of chili with melted cheddar on top. I took several bites before husband returned from his trip to the restroom, and then he ate the rest. We loved the chili! Maybe a little salty but otherwise perfect. Husband ordered the brisket and chicken combo with beans and coleslaw. The beans also had brisket in them, but a different flavor profile than the chili. The coleslaw was fresh if not unique. It came with a cornbread loaf and a pile of pickled onions and cucumbers that were really brightly flavored and super enjoyable. Son ordered half a pound of brisket and ate that (and helped his dad finish his too). He had a mac and cheese and waffle french fries as his sides, it's only complaint was he didn't like the cheese on top of the Mac which is totally personal preference. He did not order the combo plate because he ate my corn bread. I ordered the smoked barbecued salmon with green beans and cheddar grits. The grits required salt and pepper, but were tasty and devoured. The green beans had a unique mustard sauce, based on one of their barbecue sauces. Although we ate about half of them, this is probably my least favorite way to have green beans. The salmon was a very generous boneless skinless piece of fish, perfectly cooked tender not dry with a little barbecue sauce on top. I tried a bunch of the sauces and actually preferred the apple, and the spicy. It is fun that there are five different sauces on the table. The North Carolina is very thin and vinegary, which is probably good for drenching brisket. The bark on the brisket was delectable, even though son leaves this behind I ate some! This restaurant doesn't have very many reviews, they have not been open super long. Visit and give them some love! I would happily come back, but would love to see them add some happy hour discounted appetizers and drinks for my next visit.
