This is a "legacy" dish that used to get great comments from the previous incarnation of Rice Express, so I was a little skeptical if they would be able to delivery the prior chefs level of quality, and not knowing what it was actually like, I really enjoy this dish here. I loved this place. I stopped in for lunch after some medical appointments, and ordered a lunch special. It was pouring that day and I just wanted a warm and comforting meal, and they did not disappoint. Top Chinese Restaurant in Folsom!!! Authentic dishes with amazing service. We just discovered this place this year, next to 99 Ranch Asian Market and have dined here many times already. They serve traditional and rare Chinese cuisine, including salty fish rice and wide variety of congee (rice soup). You can even call and order a few days ahead for special occasions and the owner and chef will find fresh fish, make homemade special farm chicken soup as well as other specialty dishes not on the menu. It was only our third time there because we live in Nevada City/Grass Valley. If I lived closer, I would be a regular for sure. The food is some of the best I have ever had. I have tried the vegetable chicken and the vegetable prawns, and both were amazing (and the leftovers were just as good). My friend has had the walnut prawns twice and walnut chicken once and was very pleased with both. I had a taste of both, and they were very crispy and delicious! Peking Pork Chops - the best I have had since moving up here 20 years ago. For those that order Sweet & Sour Pork/Chicken/Prawns (this is not a real Chinese dish) order the Peking Pork Chops instead. Salt & Pepper Pork Chops - perfectly crispy with tender meat. Sautéed Veggies - prepared with all the veggies I like and omitted the ones I don't. The kitchen is very accommodating. Two Dungeness Crabs ( I brought the live crabs to them) and they prepared them two ways - Salt & Pepper and Ginger Scallion - absolute perfection! Crabs were not over-cooked and flavor was great... I needed soup when I had Covid a couple of months ago. I ordered pork and century egg congee. When I tasted it, it was VERY salty that I had to tweak it and basically try to water it down. It was salty to a point that it was almost inedible and I had Covid! I guess I didn't lose taste. Once I tamed the saltiness of the congee, I was able to enjoy it. We've been coming here since we moved to the Roseville area back in 2019 and i think they changed ownership since after the pandemic but nevertheless, still our go to place whenever we go to the folsom area ( 99ranch) the owners are very friendly , fast service & clean bathrooms too! Been here before and decided to have my favorite - Taiwanese beef noodles. Was suprised coming in with a new look and was right that it was under new management. The soup was way better than before. Ordered from this place last night. Seriously the worst food I have ever eaten!!! We ordered the Seafood Chow fun and Beef Chow fun and it was so greasy with huge gross noodles that seriously made me gag! There was maybe two or three pieces of seafood and the same with the beef. Really so disgusting my husband and I threw it in the garbage. Never have I ever called a food place to talk to the manager, but I was so mad I did. I told him he should be ashamed to serve this kind of "food" (Loose term trust me) much less charge the price that we paid. I walked by this place on my way to Hisui Sushi and if it wasn't for the sign in the window advertising Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, trying a place called "Rice Express" would not have been high on my list. Based on the favorable beef noodle reviews on Yelp, I've tried this place 3x now and am impressed with the flavor and quality of the dishes I tried which are mostly from the special dishes menu. My ratings are based on the authenticity of what I've found in the Folsom area so far (and not compared to the Bay Area). Szechuan Pickle & Shredded Pork Noodle Soup (5 stars) - Multi-dimensional flavors because of the addition of cilantro and I think a hint of sesame oil that I haven't tasted in other preparations from other restaurants. The amount of pickle was generous. The pork was flavorful and tender even though it was unevenly cut. The noodles were cooked beautifully. I will definitely be ordering this again. Beef Noodle Soup (4 stars) - For me, the Beef Flank version edges out the Taiwanese Beef Shank Noodle Soup version for me because of the meat but both are very good. Broth was flavorful, five spice flavors are there but on the lighter side, the beef is tender, the noodles were perfectly al dente. It's great to find a place where I can get my beef noodle fix when I don't feel like making this dish at home. Singapore Style Chow Fun Noodles (4 stars) - I always request that this dish be made with the wider chow fun noodle instead of the thin rice noodles that are usually used. I asked that this be packed for takeaway and the noodles probably continued to cook in the container so they were a bit too soft when I tried the noodles at home. The noodles came with shrimp and Chinese BBQ pork. The only knock is the curry flavor was not as strong as I like but overall the flavors were there. That said, I don't think I'll be ordering this dish again from this restaurant because I have another source for the same dish in the Bay Area. Pork Spareribs over Steamed Rice (4 stars) - For some reason I was expecting this to be a black bean spareribs but it turned out to be more of a "red cooked" five spice flavored sparerib with gravy. I liked the flavor profile and the leftovers were even better since the flavors developed. The pork ribs could have been more tender and the rice on this day was not as soft and fluffy. I am inspired to find an online recipe like this so I can try making it at home. Jalapeno Chicken (4 stars) - I ordered this dish because of all the Yelp photos. Plus I was craving something fried. This was a surprisingly delightful dish. The chicken was very lightly battered, had a very light crunch, and was not greasy. Though the dish came with diced jalapenos, the chicken just has a hint of heat which I think would be well tolerated by those who might otherwise be worried about it IMO. The spring roll was really tasty but it didn't come with any red dipping sauce so I dipped it in the Hot & Sour soup which had a vinegary bite. Stir-Fried Sticky Rice (4 stars) - I initially rated this dish a 3 but then upgraded it to 4 stars when I ate the leftovers the next day. When I tried this rice at the restaurant, it was not as sticky as I would have liked and it didn't have the fragrance of what you would find in the "Lo Mai Gai" sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf at dim sum. Heating up the leftovers in the microwave made the rice stickier and the flavors became more intense so now I love this dish! I really like the bits of Chinese cured pork belly ("Lap Yuk") which elevates the dish and is a nice change from the Chinese sausage that most restaurants use. The diced shiitake mushrooms add a nice chew and are well hydrated. The dried shrimp is the bigger size so you can easily pick it out if you aren't a fan but these ones are palatable and not too "stinky" tasting. I will order this dish again as takeaway so the flavors can develop in the fridge overnight. Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice (4 stars) - You need to like the taste (and smell) of salted fish to enjoy this dish. And ideally microwave any leftovers when you have a chance to air out the house. Don't let this dissuade you from trying this dish though :-). If you've had this dish before at other restaurants, Rice Express' preparation is comparably good thought the pieces of chicken are on the small side. Braised Pork Rice (3 stars) - This dish grew on me though my initial impression was that it isn't as flavorful as other "Lu Rou Fan" dishes I've had elsewhere. The pork was tender and not overly fatty. The egg was a bit salty. I appreciated the broccoli to offset the richness. I recommend trying the Pork Spareribs over Steamed Rice instead. Hot & Sour Soup (3 stars) - This soup came with the lunch order of Jalapeno Chicken. I enjoyed the soup, it's vinegary and the way I like it though others may think the balance is a bit off. I would have liked more tofu and cloud ear in the soup. I'm not mad at this soup though. read more

Alright so the rain was crazy and it was so cold. I suddenly had cravings for some RICE EXPRESS. That's right. I live in South Sacramento but I decided to trek out to Folsom during the super heavy rain to fulfill the cravings that I had. I was so scared driving all the way here, it took about 40-45 minutes because of the rain. All the fear of driving here went away when the food from Rice Express hit the tip and back of my salivating tongue. The flavor and the savoriness was on point. I got the best of both worlds tonight with the toasty flavorful beef noodle soup, the sticky rice, the chow fun, and LAST BUT NOT LEAST, the almighty great best of all time, jalapeño chicken. Well, I am sad to see Jen and her crew leave, but I had to check out the new place. It looks the same on the inside minus the familiar faces. I really wanted to try the wontons (soup) because previously they were some of the best I have had anywhere. I asked if my lunch plate soup of the day could be the wonton soup and not only did he give me the wonton to try, our friendly server gave me the regular hot and sour also! Well, def different wonton soup, but also def very good! I will order the wor wonton next time! I ordered the lunch plate broccoli beef with chicken chow mein (choice of chow mein, fried, white or brown rice). Once again different but also very good. It tasted more gourmet to me, and had great flavor which tasted homemade. The beef tasted like good quality too! Choice of soup: hot and sour or egg flour - the hot and sour was just ok and wasn't hot enough temp-wise. Choice of appetizer: eggroll or cream cheese wonton. I had the egg roll and it has that 5 spice flavor I don't care for so next time I'll try the cream cheese wonton. My husband had the shrimp noodle soup off the lunch menu which is what he used to always order, and he said it was different, but equally as good as before. Kung Pao chicken spices were amazing and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. I had a bowl of wanton soup with it and the broth was amazing. I couldn't wait to go back and try something else. So later that week I took my sister there. This time I had the Mongolian Beef. And my sister had a shrimp and veggie dish and we split the War Wonton Soup. It was all amazing. The man on the phone tells us to come back and he'll have the correct order ready. She writes it down and asks if we wanted steamed rice in a way that sounded like an extra means of making it right. I said that would be great. They come out with the correct order, charge me saying it's for the rice, but come to find out it's for the order they messed up and she asked for me to pay for the rice separately despite the man telling us to come in to pick up the correct order they messed up.
