Joy House opened up near us a few years ago. Ordinarily we would have checked it out sooner, since it's close by and it'd be nice to have a go-to Chinese restaurant. However, when we looked at the menu, the prices seemed too high. Sure, that might work in Rocklin/Roseville but we didn't want to pay higher-than-normal prices. Finally had a chance to check it out this weekend. Husband wanted some West Lake Soup and we didn't know of any places around here that served it. Took a peek on Yelp and found that Joy House offers it, so we ordered 5 items over the phone and my husband went to pick it up. The total for the 5 items was over $90. Pricey. He brought everything home and as I laid it on our kitchen table, I remarked that it wasn't a lot of food for $90+. He agreed. West Lake Soup was decent, so that's good. Everything else was just kinda average, ok, meh but not spectacular. Beef chow fun--not bad but the beef was overly salty. They use the outer layer of an onion too, so I had to spit those pieces out. Owners must be cheap to have to keep the outer layer of an onion and feed it to their customers. Not a good first impression. Orange chicken--I don't think I've ever had orange chicken at a restaurant that I didn't like but this flavor was a little different. It wasn't bad though. Braised tofu--consistency of tofu was different from what I had expected. Decent but not sure why their thin bok choy pieces were bitter. Are they growing their own bok choy in their garden or buying it from lower end vendors? Yang Chow Fried Rice--super disappointing. Not much flavor, though it was dark like it had been seasoned with soy sauce. Rice was extremely difficult to chew. Not sure if they undercooked the rice or if it's low quality rice. (Also trying not to think about how I read about fake rice in China too). Overall, not impressed. Not much flavor other than SALT and MSG (had a headache after lunch). Sad because it's close by and the employees seemed friendly. But maybe to people who aren't super picky, they won't mind. There are just better Chinese restaurants in town that taste better and are less expensive. It's a pass for us.
So, I was out and about, having just finished my massage when I was hungry. I love Chinese food and when I was in my car, I looked up and saw a Chinese restaurant was right nearby. So with that, I stopped in to visit Joy House and have some lunch. I was the only one here and my first thought was, if I'm the only one here, something is wrong, maybe this place is no good. I went in anyway and got a seat all by myself with no one else in the restaurant. I was given some water with lime and the menu with the lunch specials I ordered the Yu-Shang Shredded Pork, which was at the top of the lunch menu for the lunch specials. The waitress said it was very good. I took the option and ordered the pork fried rice to go along with it. I haven't even eaten 1/2 of it and all I can say is it is outstanding! It says that it's spicy on the menu, and I can see a few peppers in there, but it is really not that spicy at all. I can't say that the flavor is amazing and the fried rice is absolutely stupendous. The Chef, David Zhang, came out and introduced himself and actually gave me a signed copy of his book. I told him what an excellent meal this was and he was very appreciative. David Zhang is the chef and the owner and he was very nice. The dish I ordered, the Yu-Shang Shredded Pork, is delicious, but there's no way I'm going to finish this. It looks like it's going to be a leftover, take home meal for me. I live nearby and I've never heard of this place before but, I will be back. Great choice!
Authentic Chinese restaurant in Roseville! (Yes) Its definitely a mom/pop family-owned business and the servers seemed like their daughters. Food was delicious and they do lunch specials on weekends, which come with hot and sour soup, rice and a fried wonton. We ordered the Singapore-style noodles, basil chow fun, green bean lunch special, pecan prawns lunch special, and braised tofu stir fry. The braised tofu and chow fun were my favorites. Would not recommend green bean lunch special. It had too much corn starch. In general, I would come back for the authentic Chinese food and family atmosphere.
Joy House is a classic, no-frills Chinese spot that delivers solid comfort food -- even when they're busy. We visited during Lunar New Year, and despite the crowds, the food came out hot and consistent. The beef chow fun had great smoky flavor, the sizzling rice soup was hearty and comforting, and the cream cheese wontons were crispy and familiar. A thoughtful bonus: they surprised us with sesame balls on the house, which was a nice touch. Simple, reliable, and satisfying. Would definitely return.
My husband and I came here after seeing a video on the Tasted Duo Instagram account. We started with the vegetable spring rolls, which were very fresh tasting. We also had the pan fried pork buns on special, and they were great along with the sauce they came with. For our dishes we chose the orange chicken (which was tasty but could have been a little more crispy and spicy), the curry chicken fried rice (which had a very nice mild curry flavor - just like the Tasted Duo said), and the black pepper beef crispy noodles (which was our favorite because the flavor and textures were so good). We had to drive about 40 minutes to go here, but we look forward to coming back and trying other dishes.
Very good Chinese place with good service and yummy dishes that come in fair portions. The ambiance is nice enough for a standard dining out/date night, not too fancy and that's ok! We did have a slight hiccup when we ordered a special, some pan fried pork buns, the waitress let us know the chef accidentally burned our first batch and that they would need to remake it which may take some time but we weren't too pressed by this. When they did come out they were superrrrrr good! Another standout was the Egg Foo Young.
I unfortunately had written off Chinese food in favor of Southeast Asian cuisine until I came by this fabulous restaurant. The Chinese food here is excellent, all freshly made with top notch ingredients made by a chef who truly knows what he's doing Coming here with several friends we settled into a large round table, perfect for conversation, and a large 'lazy susan' turntable for conveniently passing the food. The restaurant is clean, upscale, nicely decorated and very comfortable. They make you feel like family and are very welcoming and hospitable. The owner/chef introduced himself and gave us a special appetizer treat of deep fried wonton with filling. Delicious Hot and sour soup started us off and it was tasty and so good. We ordered the following for the table - Almond Chicken - Kung Pao Chicken - Mongolian Beef - Candied Pecans with Jumbo Prawns - Fish Fillet in Hot Chili Sauce - Braised Eggplant in Garlic Sauce - Garlic String Beans - White Rice Needless to say every dish was unique and stood out on its own. The combination of flavors was spot on perfect. Everyone seemed quite pleased. For me the standout items were the Candied Pecans with Jumbo Prawns. Simply amazing, on a bed of lettuce and a hint of mustard. Also, the Fish Fillet in Hot Chili Sauce... really a soup consistency and the fish was extraordinary, firm, tasty and cooked to perfection. It is super spicy which us fine by me. I expected the String Beans to be so-so as is so much the case in most places, but here it is just plain delicious. The beans are cooked just right with just enough garlic sauce coating. The portions are large and the price very reasonable. I had been here once before, for Chinese New Year last year with some Yelp friends. I was sold then, and even moreso now. I'm not going to pass a year without going back ever again! This place is superb.
Amazing food quick service fried rice is delicious I have yet to find a meal I haven't been completely 110% satisfied with highly recommend
The food was absolutely delicious! We ordered Beef Chow Mein, Tender Fish Filets in White Sauce and a side of steamed white rice. I absolutely love that the tender fish filets included wood ear and various vegetables. It is a traditional Chinese fungus/mushroom that is VERY good for you and is not often seen at any other restaurant. I love that they have tablecloth, giving it a bit of a nice fancy feeling without being too fancy. The downside though, they need to hire at least one more wait staff. It took a bit too long to get our check. Otherwise, everything else was amazing!! Went away stuffed to the brim at a very reasonable price. Will definitely be coming back but only if I'm not in a hurry.
Tasty, Authentic Chinese Food for Belinda C's UYE [Rocklin CA] I've since returned here twice since Belinda introduced Joy House to our group of 12. The first time I dined here I had the Mongolian Beef and it was delicious. I've also tried the Beef Broccoli and the Salt & Pepper Chicken. All lunch specials are served with soup and rice. Soup is Hot & Sour soup. The Mongolian Beef was not spicy which I loved. Joy House was the first and only one I know that served non-spicy Mongolian Beef. Love at first bite... "wowwoww! that's tasty" The first thing I loved about the Beef Broccoli was the broccoli!! Small bite-size florets with so much crunchiness. Mmm! The dish was loaded with fresh broccoli, tender flavorful beef, and the best stir fry sauce... I asked for fried rice and they were able to substitute the white rice with brown rice. Sesame Balls came with the meal. While I was really craving for crispy fried chicken I did not see it on their menu so I ordered the Salt & Pepper Chicken. This was just okay. It wasn't filled with flavors as the other dishes I tried beforehand, maybe because I opted to leave out the 'pepper' ¯\_('~')_/¯ The meal came with Wonton Chips & Sweet & Sour Sauce. Miranda was the wonderful server for all three of my visits. I came back another time to purchase 4-pc Bowl Sets. Loved the designs. The day we dined, we found out that this restaurant had been named one of The Best Asian Food (Restaurants) in the USA (see photo)! Congratulations! Our service (Miranda) was great. She was warm and friendly, patient even though some in our party arrived later than our reservation. We enjoyed a bright daikon radish appetizer, sweet and sour soup, several different entrees (party of 6), and sesame covered red bean balls (a dim sum) for dessert. The jasmine tea was good as well! This is a popular place to dine as well as order take out to pick up or have delivered. GO GO GO!!!!
Joy House is tucked into a suburban strip mall in Rocklin, CA. I traveled out this way to met up with friends for a weekend lunch. I had no idea what to expect since this was my first ever dining experience here. Our group ordered a variety of dishes. I was able to sample a bit from their orders. Everything tasted quite fresh and flavorful. Service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean and modern. Relaxing with a bit of an upscale ambiance. Miranda, the waitress, was fantastic. The husband and wife owners also work at the restaurant. He is the chef and she helps in the kitchen. Now let me tell ya about the food: The cuisine ranges from Hunan, Szechuan, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Hot and Sour Soup- Pure deliciousness! Luved it. Savory, spicy, and tangy. Beautiful thick, glossy broth. Pork Fried Rice- It was prepared well. No oiliness. Rice was fluffy and fresh tasting. Prawns and Lobster Sauce- Gorgeous color on the prawns and vegetables. Classic Cantonese flavors. Boiled Fish and Pickled Cabbage- This dish was new to me. The entree is prepared like a soup. Besides the large chunks of white fish, it had glass noodles and pickled cabbage. The broth had an intended slight sour taste. To be honest, my first sip threw off my tastebuds and confused them. But after several more sips, the flavors grew on me. I had enjoyed it. Spicy Beef Combo- This is one of their signature dishes. I have never had this before, so I gave it a go. It was thin slices of cooked beef mixed with honeycomb tripe, bamboo shoots, and what tasted like chopped pine nuts. It was all served in chili oil. The tripe was thinly sliced as well. The beef was tender and had a melt in your mouth texture. The dominant flavor was the chili oil, it had a "kick". This was another dish that at first bite, the texture and flavors put my tastebuds on alert. But gradually it grew on me. Yu- Shang Shredded Pork- This was my favorite dish. It was delicious! Besides the shredded pork, it had bamboo shoots, wood ear mushroom, carrots, green onion, and bell peppers in a chili sauce. Lots of flavors.
Came here for the first time with a group of friends to celebrate Chinese new year coming up. I never heard of this restaurant and was happy to hear that we have a more authentic Chinese restaurant in the area. Their lunch specials are a good deal! Many people in our party ordered lunch specials, and had leftover food. A friend and I decided to split a couple dishes. We ordered the spicy boiled fish and dry pot beef. They're both large servings and we had leftovers as well. The spicy boiled fish was served with glass noodles and cabbage in a soup. I was expecting more heat but rather, the spice level was mild. The dry pot beef had a lot of chili oil with it with a good spice level. It was kind of like a stirfry. I also like that with every meal, they serve you soup and gin doi or fried sesame balls with red bean paste for dessert, Prices are reasonable for the food that you get and it is more authentic Chinese than many of the other surrounding Chinese restaurants in the area.

The local Lincoln spot wasn't doing it for us, and while we love Red Lantern, nobody wanted to navigate a casino floor just for a noodle fix on a Friday night. We decided to give Joy House a chance. We ordered delivery, and they did not disappoint. We had their vegetable chow mein, sweet-and-sour chicken, potstickers ( not pictured) , and spring rolls. Everything tasted great. Next time, we'll try eating at the restaurant in person to get the full experience . Can't wait to see what else they've got on the menu! read more

Great food and portion size. Very friendly staff and service. Everything was tasty and definitely worth bringing back for leftovers. The atmosphere was great with Chinese lanterns hung up. read more

A wonderful venue with floor to ceiling windows (bring shades for sun blocking). A couple of tables outside, too. Our table shared all of our dishes. I loved the yu shang shredded pork and the pork fried rice was absolutely one of the best I've had. Sesame balls surprised me since I don't really like sesame seeds. Service was great. The restroom is imperfect (floor rough, bowl needed attention, exposed cleaning supplies and a lock that didn't hold but I'm sure will be fixed since they didn't know). The restaurant itself was clean and I loved the full length windows. Parking was plentiful on a Saturday at lunch. I look forward to returning to have their Chef Chu style Chinese chicken salad. It's a shame because the food is pretty good, especially for the area. This is my second time eating here, but my first time eating here for lunch. The first time I came here, they had recently opened, so I reserved judgement. I did remember thinking the food was mostly solid. Walked in today and the restaurant was pretty full, but I could see some empty tables with dirty dishes still on them. My party was told we would be seated in moment after a table was cleared, but this ended up being a ~15 minute wait. That wait time usually isn't an issue, but I felt deceived at the lack of transparency and slowness. There was essentially only one waitstaff member, and I hope they are paying her well because she had such a cheery demeanor for someone in such a stressful job waiting + busing all the tables. Tables were basically only bused when a party was waiting for the table, and being surrounded by dirty tables throughout my meal was something I haven't experienced in a long time. The floor was also very wet in some spots for some reason. Seemed like a slipping hazard. I ordered the lunch special (under $14 excluding tax and tip) which comes with an entree (I got the shredded pork), rice (got white over brown), hot and sour soup, and a sesame ball. Once again, the food was solid, although the pork was pretty oily. I also tried the salt and pepper fish (tasty and less oily) and the 10pc pork dumplings (the slowest dish that actually came out, tasted fine but was missing the condiments that usually go with it. Presentation was somewhat lacking bc the dumplings sagged and stuck together during the steaming process). The big problem was the hot and sour soup and the sesame ball - they never came out, and my party had to take the ask for both items. Ended up taking the hot and sour soup to go, but surprisingly the sesame ball ended up being sesame ballS! Not sure if this was intentional or if they accidentally gave us a bigger serving, but we weren't changed extra. However they are definitely not made to order because they were room temperature - I like them hot, so I took them home to eat. Don't come here if you're in a hurry and be attentive on whether you received everything you ordered. read more

My "go-to" place for authentic Sichuan cuisine! I know, I love the spicy stuff! Food is fantastic, and the service great! Dumpligs are NOT on the menu, but be sure to ask the chef! read more

Came here with family and got several items to share: 1. sizzling rice soup - has water chestnuts, snow peas, chicken - warm, hearty soup with crunchy texture from the crispy rice 2. beef in hot chili sauce - very soft and tender - lots of chili peppers but not too spicy 3. cumin lamb - lots of cumin and veggies 4. veggies - broccoli, carrots, woodear, water chestnuts, lotus root 5. honey walnut shrimp - a classic dish, didn't disappoint - includes apples and candied walnuts Overall, really enjoyed all the dishes! We ordered a light meal from this restaurant last night. The food was pretty good. Our meal consisted of Pot Stickers, Prawns in Lobster Sauce, and Brown Rice. The Pot Stickers were filled with tasty meat. The Prawns in Lobster Sauce on Brown Rice hit the spot. While the food was good, I would rate it average compared to other local options. Joy House is located in a plaza with ample parking, though the lot can become busy at certain times of the day. We arrived shortly after opening hoping to beat the lunch crowd on a Saturday. Upon entering the restaurant we were almost immediately greeted by the server, making us feel instantly welcomed. Just after we were seated we were handed menus and offered water. Three types of hot tea (jasmine, black, and green) are also available and complimentary with your meal. I enjoyed the jasmine tea on this cool, rainy morning. Now let's get to the food. The braised eggplant in garlic sauce (with ground pork added) was excellent, as was the salty fish chicken fried rice. I ordered a side of brown rice and it was cooked perfectly. Noodles of all kinds are my comfort food, so I was glad to find many different kinds of noodles on the menu. The chicken chow mein (a bit greasy for me), the chow fun with spicy beef and basil (also a bit greasy for me), and the Taiwanese style rice noodles were flavorful and well-prepared. The fried rice and noodle dishes all had the distinct charred, smoky flavor--a sign that the chef has mastered the skill of wok cooking. My husband thought the tomato beef crispy noodles (his all-time favorite) was one of the best he has ever had. The candied pecans with jumbo prawns were excellent--large prawns in the traditional mayonnaise-based sauce with a hint of citrus, perfectly toasted pecans, and a few chunks of fresh apple. He would reorder both these dishes in a heartbeat. The sesame chicken, requested by one of our kids, was the only dish we would likely not reorder. If you're like me and sometimes wonder if the lunch special means a smaller portion, you'll be glad to know that the lunch specials are served in generous portions at Joy House. The specials also come with a tasty hot and sour soup as well as two sesame balls--imagine a chewy and slightly sweet doughy exterior filled with a bit of sweet red bean paste. Both were welcome additions to our meal. The dining experience at Joy House is enhanced by the pleasantly decorated interior--beautiful wall art, paper lanterns, plants, and even delicate textile pieces on the tall windows that allowed just the right amount of sunlight in, adding to the inviting atmosphere. We have experienced consistently friendly and attentive service on our visits. Our server at lunch today recognized us from our prior visit a week ago. On one rather busy afternoon, we saw one server take care of at least 4 tables alone, and she took the time to make the guests feel well attended to. Lastly, my husband who has somewhat of a sensitive stomach has noticed that he has never experienced any stomach discomfort following the meals at Joy House. Today was our third visit this month and it has already become our favorite spot for Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hunan cuisine. Looking forward to future visits as there are more menu items I am eager to try. read more

Are there any items that are dairy free?
I would say most of the menu is dairy free. Chinese people are notoriously known to be lactose-intolerant and don't grow up drinking milk, so they don't use much milk in their cooking. To be on the safe side, I'd avoid the batter fried and curried…
What kind of vegetarian items (no fish/meat) do you have? Or do you allow tofu substitutions?
