We loved it here so much that we came twice in a 4-day span. I was looking for Asian food in Reno and saw this 5-star average place on Yelp and knew I had to check it out. The first time we went was for lunch on a Thursday and it was pretty busy. You order at the counter and sit wherever you like. My wife and I each had the Khao man gai chicken and I'm glad I didn't share because it was so delish! My parents shared a Khao mun fried chicken and I took a bite of it and it was also pretty heavenly. The rice that came with the Khao man gai chicken was also really good, as well as the sauce. Dare I say it was the best Khao man gai I've ever had. I knew they had high tea dimsum on Sundays so I thought I should ask if they had anything available for this Sunday. Unfortunately, Perapol (the owner) said they were fully booked for the weekend. But he heard that it was my graduation so he decided he was going to make another table by the festive and inclusive tree (see pictures) to accommodate us. Wow. I was so blown away by this act of going above and beyond for my party. On to Sunday.. we arrived just before 1pm and were immediately seated. Our drink orders were taken very quickly (there was an option of sangria and hot tea, or both). Our food also came out very quickly and tasted like everything was just cooked right before it was served. Everything was amazing, but my favorite was the mochi with a peanut filling. It reminded me of a delicacy from home (Philippines). The arroz caldo and puto also made me very nostalgic. I loved it so much that I asked Perapol if he would ever considering expanding to Vegas. Did a Yelp elite event a few months back where I had picked up a meal to take home. So thoroughly enjoyed it. But today I went back to celebrate a Birthday ( Nancy V .. also elite). Sundays the Rice Box Kitchen presents High Tea Dim Sum. Their menu changes monthly. And reservations are needed .. think there are three seating each Sunday. October's menu included: Drinks: Botanical Blooming Tea (hot); House Sangria (you can have both) Savories: Thai Shrimp Toast (yummy); Shrimp Dumplings in Red Chili Oil (spicy);Pork & Kale Dumplings; Lumpia; Box Box Chicken Wings; Baked Veggie Boa & Jook (this is a rice porridge) with Chinese Donut Sweets: Shortbread Cookie; Pandan Coconut Tart & Mochi Biites Check their website for schedules .. once a week they do a hot pot; they have frequent "special event" dinners. I'm still thinking about the chicken noodle soup. It's delicate, comforting, and layered in the quiet kind of way that lets each ingredient shine. I ordered the Chicken Panfried Dumplings and was very pleased. I spoke with one of the employees and asked if they made their own Dim Sum? He responded, "Yes, we make everything here. We have Dim Sum only on Sundays." I plan to go back and try them! This was a tasty little spot for a quick yet delicious lunch. This is a order at the counter and then sit down type of place. I had the Khao Moo Dang, which is a bbq pork dish with rice, cucumbers, a hard boiled egg and a sweet and spicy sauce. I personally thought the dish was missing a little something and some of the pieces were a bit dry but overall it was tasty. The reason I didn't give them 4 stars though was because my wife's meal was amazing, she had the Khao Mun Fried Chicken. Besides the Chicken being very tasty and crispy the rice was sooooo good! It was cooked with like garlic and ginger and man was it tasty. It also had this spicy tangy very tasty sauce on the side. We each also got the Hibiscus-Pineapple Agua Fresca and it was delicious. Menu choices aren't that extensive, but the food was good. I had the Khao Mun Gai, which was chicken in top of coconut ginger rice. It was a little dry, but the tasty sauce in the side helped. Not just a bowl... a revelation! I don't remember the name or number of what I ordered, but I certainly remember the flavor combinations making my taste buds explode!!! I got a crispy chicken bowl. I told him about my gluten intolerance and he pointed out things on the menu that would be saf for me. I can't remember the actual name but I got a curry chicken. There were many elements to this flavorful dish and it was just what I needed. No flavor was overwhelming, just very complimentary of eachother. The chicken was super tender, the noodles soft but not mushy, the veggies crisp. The music wasn't too loud and the dining room was comfortable. I asked Perapol of he minded me working on my laptop and he not only said it was ok but gave me the wifi password. I might go back for dinner tonight. Like many other discoveries, Yelp has yet again led me to another amazing one - Rice Box Kitchen. Being Asian (Filipina to be exact), I grew up with rice as a staple for every meal. Hearing Rice in the name of a restaurant was music to my ears. I quickly called in and placed an order for one of their signature dishes - KHAO MUN GAI (Poached chicken skinless chicken thighs over coconut, ginger and garlic rice served with soybean chili sauce). It was a dish that sounded so simple yet was so complex in its simplicity. It was quality ingredients cooked to perfection and served in a way that was harmonious and comforting. At first taste, these were my thoughts, that the meal was, comforting. Later, after looking up Parapol's story on his website, I found that his motivation for his restaurant was to share the same gift of comforting meals that he himself was lucky to experience with meals created for him in childhood by his mother. Perapol serves up his signature dishes, select dim sum, and has recently added Shabu Shabu, a Japanese style meal in which thin-sliced meats and other ingredients are cooked in a pot of boiling broth on the table and served with a dipping sauce. If you follow RBK on Instagram, you can stay up-to-date with seasonal changes to their menu and hours. Being a fan of his food, I didn't hesitate in signing up for a slot. I picked the 5pm slot on Friday since I wanted enough time for my three little ones to eat without being rushed to bedtime. Upon arrival for our all you can eat Shabu Shabu, Perapol greeted me and my family with a smile, as he always does, and we sat down at a nicely placed table. We circled our desired types of sides, noodles, meats, and veggies, and waited anxiously (with the enticing fragrance of the broth filling the room). I suggest tasting a little of everything since it's included in all you can eat. The drinks were a separate charge and were worth every penny. We ordered two of each of their hibiscus fresca and Thai lime tea. They were incredibly refreshing and although I'm a water type of person, these would be the exceptions. Other drink options include teas and beer. As soon as the tower (similar to a tiered tower found at tea parties) arrived loaded with fresh, well-presented, ingredients, my kids didn't hesitate and all participated in placing some ingredients into the pot. After a short moment, everything was cooked and everyone dug in. Silence hit and all I heard was "Mmm" all around the table. We had run into the perfect meal to welcome in the chilly breeze and we were in pure bliss. We were completely consumed in the warmth of the broth and the fresh ingredients that could be dipped in Perapol's tangy peanut sauce and combined in all sorts of ways between so many ingredients. This meal completely satisfied our taste buds, tummies, and hearts. Despite us being full, we felt pretty healthy, having consumed the equivalent of a magical food rainbow. Our meal was topped with a yogurt drink I grew up with, Yakult, which is refreshing and highly a addictive. You can find it at 168 Asian Market if you would like more. The restaurant also sells mochi bars (an asian style dessert made with rice flour) that are unique to Reno and super fun and delicious to eat. They come in all sorts of flavors - sesame, matcha green tea, ube, and chocolate. They come in cute boxes that would be suitable for any occasion. They are a must. Perapol is the small business owner behind this amazing food and one of the nicest and most hardworking people I know that puts in so much work everyday towards his business. He does so with passion, a smile, and the intent to provide the best possible experiences for his guests. From the restaurant and food to the details on the table and service, Perapol has thought everything out completely. I followed the Caldor Fire closely and noticed how Perapol jumped right in and offered his food to victims and displaced people in need. To give selflessly is something highly commendable in my book, and this trait, along with Perapol's delicious food, work ethics, and presence everyday to serve and make people happy is something that contributes to my new found love for Perapol and his business. I wish him nothing but success. After eating at Perapol's restaurant, I developed my own understanding of "Eat, Drink & Gossip" written on his wall. I am so happy that the owner Perapol brought his amazing food and his flair to Reno! His energy and passion for food is so evident and you feel at home in the restaurant. This was my first time at rice box and now we are planning several return trips. This is truly authentic Thai food. Khan Mun Gia: I think that the true measure of a great chef is when very few ingredients can be used, but when used perfectly the flavors are balanced in harmony. This dish, similar to Hainanese chicken rice is definitely one of those dishes. The soybean chili sauce is amazing! The last time we were this happy eating this dish was in Singapore. Khao Soi Gai: coconut curry egg noodle soup was so will warm your soul. I am a big fan of curry. But this may have been my favorite that I have ever had. Balance was the key here. The flavors are complex, yet nothing was overwhelming and the flavors play off of each other so perfectly. rice box is great creative asian cuisine. i came for high tea dim sum and had a great experience. flavors were on point everywhere and i enjoyed the entirety of the dining experience. it seemed like a very community driven place and i loved trying this special curated tea set. one note is you could visibly see that the fryer was getting hotter on each of the fried goods, resulting in each good getting slightly more over fried until the last one had a sort of unpleasant amount of crunchiness. it didn't deter me from eating it completely but it was something i noticed. i wouldn't mark it down since overall i left the experience happy and fulfilled. i've also indulged in the hotpot and thought it was great. i loved the smaller scale of it all and the broth was great. the assortment of meat was fantastic and tender and the sauce provided was the bomb. everything about it even dessert was great, it's easily the best hotpot in reno just off meat quality and flavor. overall this place is adorable and offers some great food. their dining experiences are superb and i'd recommend to anyone passing through. read more

And the owner Perapol revived his San Francisco Valentine's Day tradition this year. So glad he did !! Perapol creates some of the most thoughtful platings for his tasting menus each month. And the F U menu was no different. But tonight we had a more intimate look at the man behind the food. Fun course names and the stories behind, paired with fabulous unique dishes. The Threesome- a rich spicy coconut red curry butternut squash shooter (perfect for the cold night), kaffir corn fritter and passion fruit jelly on crispy rice cracker. Let your mind wander. The Infatuation- a devine tapioca dumpling filled with beet sesame pork floating in a roasted sesame cherry sake sauce. This could totally be my new infatuation. The Bitter Ex - come on, we all have had one. This delicious delicate charcoal bao bun was filled with savory mushrooms. The First Date- because who eats big on a first date, I'll have the salad. Pomelo, poached chicken, jicama, arugula, mint salad, with crispy rice noodles. The Hot Mess- we have all been there. Another perfect dish for the winter night. Sunday High Tea Dimsum is such a fun and yummy experience!! I've never had anything like it and we are so fortunate to have it here in Reno. The menu changes monthly and it never disappoints. $65 gets you a tower full of dim sum bites, desserts and more than enough food for two people. This review is for one of Perapol's special dinner events he regularly hosts. If I could rate this experience 10 stars I would! Everything was delicious and so well planned. The menu items all worked together beautifully and Perapol's witty narrative throughout the dinner made the evening so enjoyable. The standout items for me were the mushroom charcoal bao (the bitter ex) and the Argentine prawn dish (hot mess) but everything was amazing. The wines that were picked to accompany each course were perfect and the little gold box of cookies sent home with us added the perfect touch. I'm a huge Asian food fan as a white person and love expanding my horizons. When this place started getting popular on social media I knew I needed to try it, asian fusion from a californian? It took me way too long to try it out and wasted too much time not eating it. I've enjoyed, take out dim sum, yelp events, regular lunch offerings, and more recently the high tea dim sum. Everything has been delicious! The chicken soup is so good, light yet flavorful with depth, the red chicken is tender, moist and saucy. The dim sum is legit and such a great option for reno. (Sorry, I never remember the authentic names). The high tea dim sum was fun, we were allowed to sit for a very long time, my friend and I catching up. I also got to try new to me things like the chicken rice porridge, Chinese donut and shrimp toast. I loved every piece of dim sum on high tea and will 100% be back. I've actually been craving it so much, I missed out on the take out for lunar new year, but hopefully can ask about it in the future as on option as dining in is a bit hard at the moment. And I couldn't pass up the Yelp Noodle Tour special of Mee krob because you know....special! Anyway the Khao Mun Gai was a tasty meaty dish on some rice with some cucumber on the side. It has taken me a little while to review because I got takeout right before going on vacation/started my vacation feasting here before leaving! I caught the tail end of the Common Thread Noodle Tour here and boy am I glad I did! I ordered two items from the regular menu - Khao Mun Gai and Khao Soi Gai. The Khao Mun Gai was delicious but didn't blow me away. It's poached chicken over coconut, ginger, and garlic rice. So basically - a lot of chicken and rice, with a little cucmber on the side. Since I got it to go, the sauce was on the side, and boy was it packed with flavor. I didn't taste all the exciting flavors in the rice - maybe a hint - of them - but maybe my expectations were too high. So I am not saying this dish was bad - far from it! Just that it wasn't the star of the show for me :-) But! I'm in love with the other dish, Khao Soi chicken, which is a Northern Thai coconut curry egg noodle soup. Heck.Yeah. The noodles and other toppings were packed separately for takeout and I got to "assemble" the soup. That was both fun and really practical - it meant we didn't have to eat it all at once (with these three dishes, it was enough for two meals for two people). Zomg that curry! I want to eat it every day. And I am not the only one. I also had to try the Yelp Noodle Tour special - vegan! - of tofu Mee krob...even though I eat meat and sometime vegan food is boring. So super tasty! Addictive! It was crispy fried noodles with tofu and veggies in a sweet and sour sauce (ish). The tofu was a really nice texture and flavor too. I think it is great that these dishes can all be made vegetarian, and some can be vegan and/or gluten-free. Did I mention how awesome the owner, Perapol is? No? So friendly and funny! Clearly a lover (and creator) of great food. He made it a nice place to be and chat while waiting for food to go...also because there is great art and fresh flowers and it's a beautiful space with plenty of distance between tables, for eating in. Which I plan to do. Soon! When I go back, it will be on a weekend because the mochi bars, pork buns, Thai tamales, and other exciting tasty goodies are only there on weekends and I need to eat them allll! And more, like that khao moo dang. They don't have a full kitchen so I think the menu will remain fairly small, which I like because even more choices of so much good food would be overwhelming. Their Chicken Noodle Soup is my go-to when I'm feeling like I need a little comfort, on a cloudy day, or whenever I can splurge a little. It is a chicken bone broth, slow-boiled with plenty of fresh ginger and garlic, that results in a delicious, umami liquid. You can even buy just the broth at a great value! I have described the broth as revitalizing, refreshing, and and life-renewing, and it has become the reason I visit Rice Box Kitchen as often as I can. (When I told Perapol, the owner, that his broth changed my life, he just looked at me like I had a couple of screws loose (; the staff is great, read below). They boast in offering limited daily portions to reduce food waste and keep all ingredients super fresh, but the downside is that once they're out for the day, they're out! Yes, their hours are precise and to many, unorthodox or inconvenient, but they do have solid reasons for this business decision. They need time every day to prepare for Hot Pot in the evenings, picking up ingredients and allowing them to offer the freshest foods possible! I don't know of another place in town or in any of the places I've visited that hold themselves to this high of a standard. Perapol also attests to a general slow down in business during the 2:30 pm to 5 pm hours. I have personally tried to visit several times and they were closed for lunch or out of stock, but trust me, it's worth the wait and effort! Another thing to note is that on Sundays, they don't offer their typical lunch menu so they can focus on their Dim Sum seatings. Perapol, Gabe, and Matt are great! They are real people with genuine friendliness who treat you as an individual and not just another paying customer. They don't respond with generic customer service lines but actually try to get to know you. Go see for yourself why this is one of my favorite spots in town! read more

Came here for the first time with my husband a couple weeks ago and OMG it will not be the last! I had never tried Khao Soi before, but decided to give it a go. I can't even handle how delicious it was. If you ever wanted to feel a hug from your food, order this! It's spicy, filling, and had so many interesting flavors going on. I just want a whole vat at home!! Aside from the food, the people that own this are true gems. So kind and welcoming, and I can really taste the love in their food. Unassuming from the street, tucked away from the main thoroughfare, a window reads "Eat. Drink. Gossip." Stepping inside, you'll likely be immediately greeted cheerfully by the owner of Ricebox Kitchen, Perapol. The restaurant is, among other things, cozy and well maintained. A large mural of two men gossiping adorns one wall, and the black paint coupled with gold accents makes it feel larger than it truly is. The seating is comfortable, if limited. Just the kind of place I love. The menu? Simple and uncomplicated. And DELICIOUS. I have tried every piece of the menu, and I have been thoroughly sated and impressed by every offering. Each piece of the meal elevates the other, and keeps me coming back for more. High-quality, fresh ingredients ensure it to be so. Not to mention the High-Tea Dim Sum (which is so worth the money I can't recommend it enough. Gourmet is the word that comes to mind). After ordering, you are given space to eat, drink, and gossip. Perapol and his staff are both attentive and engaging, seeming to show up at just the right time to ask how your meal is without being overbearing. Which isn't to say he doesn't love a bit of gossip himself :) Friendly, warm, and inviting, the time spent eating and relaxing at RBK is a delight. They've been open for two years now, and I hope they're open for many more. Rice Box Kitchen is an experience. One I strongly recommend everyone has.
