Rice Box Kitchen - Shabu Shabu - Asian Fusion Near Me - Reno, Nevada

With much anticipation, I made a reservation and went to this place for the first time for their hot pot night. We received our food, but most of the order was missing - we got no vegetables and no beef. It was the kind of thing where you assume that the waitperson walked away in order to get the rest of your food, except she never does. We also got no ladle to retrieve our food from the boiling broth. So my wife and I used our chopsticks to bail out our food in some weird version of the game "bobbing for apples." Some other waitperson noticed at some point that we didn't have any sauce for our meal and asked if we had any sauce. We said no, so we got some. When we successfully fished out our food from the broth and were sitting there empty-handed, the waitperson came back and casually asked how everything was. I told her that there were many things wrong with our meal and listed them. She said OK and started casually walking away. I then told her more sharply that this was the worst restaurant experience I had had in a long time. She said OK, let me get the owner. The owner asked if there was anything wrong, and I told him that there was a lot wrong, and again listed the problems, including "we didn't get any ladles so we had to resort to using our chopsticks to fish out our food." I used a tone of voice that's probably about average for having really bad service. There was a range of responses available for the owner to use with me, and he picked one of the worst. With a patronizing voice, he told me that I should be using my ladle to serve myself, not my chopsticks, how I was using an aggressive attitude with him, and that I could leave if I wanted to. At this point, I raised my volume enough so that the people around me could hear me and told him that the problem wasn't that I didn't know how to use a ladle, but that we were never given one, and also that we got really shitty service all around. Then, and only then, did he take a more conciliatory tone and promised to make things better. Later, he stopped by and asked how things were going. I had forgiven everything at this point, so I pleasantly said "much better." He slapped me on the shoulder fairly hard and said, "good, why don't you calm down then?" He quickly added, "just kidding," but this was the moment where I realized that this guy was as false as a three-dollar bill. In the background was terrible, clichéd karaoke music, with the VJ imploring diners to get up there to sing for a 10% discount on their bill. The owner comped us part of the meal, I tipped generously for the amount charged. I told him I'd pay with cash because I knew that's better for businesses, and he told me that I was being a "good Asian." Great, on top of everything, he has applied some weird stereotype to the race that he and I belong to. We then engaged in small talk including what we should order when we come back. I endured this round of pleasantries because I figured that's what you need to do in order to leave a version of hell on earth. On the drive home, my wife mentioned that she got a bad impression of the owner right away. She reminded me that when we walked in ten minutes early, he used a patronizing tone about how we were early. And I remembered that I also thought this was odd since we were there for the last seating and the place was half-empty. But I hadn't quite registered this because I had been in such an affable mood when I walked in. read more

Khao mun gai... just get it. You'll open your box for the first time and maybe think you messed up because of how plain, basic and bland it looks. Take your first bite and you'll instantly regret thinking you were eating a simple piece of chicken. The flavors- WOW. In every bite. The coconut rice is cooked so perfectly. Fluffy, with the right amount of coconut flavor in it, SO comforting! read more

We went to the Rice Box for lunch and ordered 3 Mee Grop bowls, two with tofu and one with poached chicken. When they arrived, there was no sauce at all. It was very bland. When I went and asked for more sauce, I was told that they used it all on our bowls!?! If I had known, I would have ordered something different. read more

What can I say, five stars for the experience and exceptional service. The place only has about 4-5 tables which felt homey, personal and intimate. We made reservations for the Shabu Shabu Box, which was pretty much an AYCE hot pot, an Asian comfort food indeed. We were greeted by Gabe, who was very friendly, attentive and enthusiastic throughout our dinner. As first timers to the establishment, he gave us a rundown of how to order. We got to pick what we wanted in our hot pot along with AYCE appetizers. The Shabu was simple, yet very satisfying and filling. The aroma of the broth alone was so delicious! Even better with the udon and ramen, vegetables, seafood and beef in it. And the Enoki mushroom (which we've never had before) was an awesome addition to an already awesome broth. My husband never ate pot stickers before because most places we've gone to only serve pork pot stickers. It wasn't until the owner informed us that he only makes chicken pot stickers, that my husband polished off 4 large orders of pot stickers. All jokes aside, by far one of the best pot stickers we've had! Speaking of the owner, he really was a vibe! He went to every table to talk to the patrons and joked around with us. He was awesome! He made us feel at home and even offered more pot stickers. Reminded me of a relative offering you more food when you came to visit. He even said bye to everyone of us when he had to leave. The Hibiscus Pineapple Fresca was "one of the best I've had" according to my husband while I had the hot sake. As full as we were, Gabe came over asking if we wanted some dessert and told us what choices we had. We opted for the Strawberry Matcha Muffin which was made with rice flour. Because I love Butter Mochi, I instantly fell in love with the Strawberry Matcha Muffin. OMG! I'm craving for another one as I'm writing this! Just so you know, for some people, the texture will take getting used to. All in all, the food was really good, the owner was so friendly and made sure we enjoyed our stay and the staff (Gabe and Max) provided excellent service. Definitely will be back! read more

All you can eat shabu shabu?! Yes, please! I haven't had shabu shabu in years and after trying it again at rice box kitchen it was worth the wait. It is seriously good. They currently only offer this in the evening and reservation only, but I will take what I can get! They offer two kinds of broth and you can get two of the same or one of each for your hot pot. We got one of each and while the regular was tasty (a nice light broth, but still full of flavor) the spicy was the show stopper. My mouth was on fire and my nose was running like crazy but I could not stop eating!! Since it was our first time back we got almost one of everything. We got udon and ramen noodles (the ramen was killer in the spicy broth), chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, mussels, bok choy, cabbage, snow peas, carrots, broccoli, and mushrooms. It was so much fun cooking the food ourselves; it's quick and easy too! I loved trying a bit of everything to find my favorite combinations. I am hooked on the chicken, ramen noodles, mushrooms, and bok choy in the spicy broth and the pork, udon noodles, cabbage, and mushrooms in the regular broth. The night ended with a light dessert which was a strawberry black sesame mochi bar. I was stuffed after dinner but that was the perfect ending to the meal. I've also had the lunch menu from rice box kitchen and it's just as good so definitely try it out too, but the shabu shabu has stolen my heart! read more

The food at Rice box is unlike what I've been able to find in Reno. Very good tasting unique food in a good portions. My favorite was the verity of dessert that we had in our tasting. We rented out the space for a lunch and the service we received was great! The owner is involved and comes out to talk to the guests. The inside was clean and had a cool ambiance with good looking artwork. read more

First, I want to say that the entire meal was a flavor explosion. This small business is run with heart, passion, and a great well-developed palette. I called and made a last minute reservation for the last open table during the Saturday 6:45 seating. There are only a few tables in the place, so the experience and service are intimate. Second, the quality, freshness, and care is clear in all the food. The hand made dipping sauce, the mandu, the fresh meats, the amazing garlic rice, and the hand made mochi muffins made this experience worth every penny. Finally, the friendliness and personal nature of the experience makes it a one of a kind experience. I would recommend that you try the Shabu Shabu. I'd also (without trying it) say that both the weekend dim sum menu and the standard menu are probably out of this world good. Now for a few Shabu tips. I'm guessing that anyone who didn't enjoy their meal here either messed it up or just doesn't like Shabu. Tip 1: when they bring out the pot with tour chosen broths, be sure to add some garlic, radish, and/or green onion (which ever is available to add). Tip 2: while the water is coming to a boil, throw in some veggies. I use things like carrots, mushrooms in abundance. I don't eat the carrots but they help add flavor to the broth as it cooks and they don't really overcook. Even though the broth isn't hot enough yet, I like to drop a fatty piece of beef in and let it stew for a while. This adds a little fat. That piece of meat will be way over cooked but super flavorful later on. Tip 3: As you add veggies, meat, love, and time, the flavors will enhance and start to layer. When you are finished, the broth should be a rich and fatty explosion of flavor. Tip 4: as you scoop veggies and meat out of the pot and into your bowl, add some sauce and let your stuff marinate in it all before you eat it (plus it will then Cool down). Occasionally add some rice I. To the broth in your bowl and eat it like porridge. Then start again. Tip 5: the best part is sharing the company of your dining associates. Eating out of the same pot brings people together. read more

HIGH TEA DIM SUM! It's only on the weekends, and you reserve online, sit down ONLY, and it's a set menu, and it was... perfect. Seriously, you NEED to do it. It's cooked right there so you can't mess around with any other timing, it's MENT to just be enjoyed there. Not JUST the best dim sum we've ever had. It's one of the best meals we've had in this town. Far better than any dim sum had in SF. Don't shake your head at me, I lived in the bay area for over 20 years and ate dim sum at over a half-dozen spots that people swear on their lives by - and they ARE f'n delicious... but look at me when I tell you this... Was just put to shame by the food we just ate here. not joking. Everything served was some of the BEST we've ever had. dumplings, shumai, rice porridge, shrimp ball, sticky rice... everything was even better than the next, but there is dessert too! The mochi is flawless, but WHOLY CRAP. The custard tart and sesame ball! The custard had such a full texture without being pudding or flan like. The sesame ball so impeccably cooked - subtle with the sweetness it was beyond reproach. Everything was cooked to PERFECTION. The sear on the pork bun, the richness of the tapioca dumpling, texture of the custard tart. The timing of everything was cooked right before serving and came out HOT and just beyond expectations we already had set very high for this place. Only downfall? You can't order up a bunch of anything to-go. if you could order a dozen of ANYTHING on this menu to go, you would see a line flowing out of that place waiting to open every day. WILL BE EATING THIS AGAIN, soon and later. Taking friends here when they are in town and putting in reservations into summer. read more

If there's one thing Reno is lacking, it's a proper dim sum restaurant. But RBK has a small solution to that with Dim Sum Sundays! You can order ahead of time via Instagram or email and come pick up your little pockets of love or take a chance and come in on Sunday to order. I definitely recommend ordering ahead of time to ensure you get what you want as they will run out of stuff! The menu is always changing a bit and they have gluten free options. The dumplings are soft and chewy and full of flavor while not breaking the bank. This is a great way to get your weekly dumpling fix while supporting an awesome local business! read more

Omg, I don't know where to start to compliment this place. We saw the good reviews, and they did NOT disappoint. Upon entering, the owner greeted us with a pleasant welcome. I met Perapol, the engaging enthusiastic owner/chef of RBK, purely by chance; we were both getting our haircut at the same salon. Knowing my love for good cooking and food, my stylist introduced us and I promised to visit his restaurant. And boy, am I ever glad that I did. Visiting with my family, we ordered items one through four off of the interesting, albeit limited menu. The Yee Grop Tofu featured wonderfully crispy rice noodles, small cuts of flavorful tofu and crunchy sprouts, a refreshing dish and a great way to kick off the meal. Next, we had the Khao Soi Gai, a creamy coconut milk soup that was loaded with toothsome noodles and juicy pieces of chicken. I loved that it came with a small dish of toppings that really helped to make this dish "pop". The Khao Man Gai was the highlight for me. A take on hainanese chicken, the rice is both fragrant and flavorful, the chicken thigh redolent of chicken flavor (a rarity these days), and the slick, steaming hot broth really brought this dish home. The last dish, Khao Moo Dang, was chef's take on Char Siu and while I was lucky enough to have a super juicy, fatty piece, the rest of the pork was just a little bit too lean. (Fat IS flavor, after all!) Finally, Perapol completed our meal by bringing out a small dish of mocha bars, which we all very much enjoyed. (But none of us any more than my four-year old, he LOVED it!) Having spent three weeks in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore a couple years ago, canvassing the city streets for hawker stalls, night markets and food courts, this is the closest I've found to what I most loved about that trip. Namely, exotic fresh takes on national dishes. I honestly felt like we were back in Asia doing what we love most...Eating our way through the best of what each county has to offer. Prices were very fair, beer/wine sales are coming soon, there's dim sum on weekends (haven't had this yet, but chef says to email him your order in advance so he can be prepared) and Perapol is an awesome guy. We can't wait to go back! read more

I love Asian food and have struggled to find a place in Reno with truly great Asian food since moving here. My mom got me a gift card for the holidays to this place, which I previously had not heard of. She specifically told me she spoke to the owner and my gift card was enough for two people to have hot pot, so of course that is what I got! Finally found the time to make a reservation yesterday and was happy they could fit me in on short notice. The food is great, especially the fries and the meat. The spicy broth is delicious. And the desert was incredible! Completely worth the cost (even if you don't have a gift card) to have real hot pot right here in Reno. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating and the small amount of other patrons makes for a nice, personal experience. read more

Wow. The best chicken and rice we have had. At first bite we were both blown away. The owner was affable and kind, the type of local vibe you want. The mochi biscuits (or cupcakes? Can't remember, I am sorry!!) were creative and tasty, the type of fusion dessert you'd expect from stand alone bakeries. One of our favorite spots -- not just locally, like, of all time anywhere (and our family can never agree on a place). My only fear is hyping this place up but its high rating was warranted for us. read more

Stopped by this great spot for a quick lunch with my daughter. Right off the bat, I was struck by the positive energy of the place. The chef-owner and his partner gave us a warm greeting and offered us some samples of the pork dumplings, mochi, and a couple types of tea. As if we weren't excited to eat there before the samples! We ended up getting the pork dumplings, khao mun gai, pork buns, and a hibiscus tea. The chicken in the khao mun gai was perfectly cooked and laid on a bed of BLUE coconut rice. (They color it with flower blossoms!) It was insanely delicious. The rice was perfectly seasoned and the sauce it came it was the perfect blend of salty and sweet with a bit of spice. (They also gave us the sauce that usually comes with the pork dish to try-also delicious!) the pork buns were soft and had a lot of filling. I really liked that the filling wasn't overly oily. :) The pork dumplings were perfectly cooked and chock full of tasty filling. Overall, it was a great lunch and I can't wait to go back and try more dishes. BTW-the place was spotlessly clean and following all covid protocols...just so you know ;) read more

I was eager to work in the office this week so that I could try Rice Box Kitchen on my lunch break and so glad the anticipation was worth the wait because the food here is G.O.O.D. When you come in, the decor is modern and I love their motto 'Eat. Drink. Gossip' because, yes. Just yes. But when you come in you're warmly greeted right away. Today, I tried the Khao Mun Gai - pouched chicken over some of the best rice I have had in awhile....creamy, savory, sweet, perfectly steamed rice. The soybean chili sauce seals the kiss on this dish. I paired my meal today with the Thai Lime Tea and Mochi Bars....ooo the mochi bar is not too sweet, just enough and the texture is perfect The owner, SUPER NICE, hails from the bay area....this place is the little piece of home and diversity I was looking for in Reno. We recently spent our 5 year anniversary in Reno, and Rice Box Kitchen was absolutely the highlight of our trip, twice! Perapol (the gentleman you see pictured in the mural and mastermind of the operation) who's ancestry hails from Thailand, has a real understanding when it comes to blending flavors and textures. His contemporary culinary style really celebrates traditional Asian cuisines while presenting them in an exciting modern context. He just loves creating food, and maybe even more so, sharing that food with others. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted and welcomed and felt that our experience at his restaurant was important to him. Now as for the food, where to begin. - Sui Mai was my favorite (it was very close,) garnished with cilantro which just worked so well. - Khao Soi Chicken was addicting. Loved how spicy it was- my wife and I were fighting over the bowl. - Khao Moo Dang was generous, super flavorful, and paired nicely with the Serrano chili sauce and cucumbers - Thai Tamales with Curry Sauce were so original, and again, it worked! My Mexican-American wife loves tamales, and these really hit the spot in a new way. - The Chrysanthemum Sweet Iced Tea. We were joking in the car that we wished they came in Big Gulp size. So good! And the sweetness really pairs well with the spice and savor of the food. - The Pork Buns were surprisingly buttery like a croissant, with the best pork filling inside - The Tapioca Dumplings were also pretty addictive - The off-menu Pineapple Coconut Buns, amazing- buttery and delicious - And Orange and Chocolate Mochi bars were a great finish, and again, so new and unique. Again, we went twice, hence all the food, and so glad we did! Heads up, this is a small kitchen, so things will understandably run-out throughout the day, that said, you really can't go wrong with anything in the menu. Looking forward to coming back during our next trip to Reno! read more

Really fantastic locally owned business. The owner takes pride in every aspect of the business and the food. While it may seem like simple dishes, the depth of flavor is phenomenal. I didn't know rice could taste THAT good and there's just so many different flavors in one dish. I would quite literally buy ten pounds of that rice and use it for meal prep lunches each week. I had the moo dang pork dish over a week ago and I'm still thinking about that dish. Can't wait to try the dim sum on the weekends. While I wish it were available all the time, after speaking with the owner and how much time and effort goes into the dumplings, I am amazed and not mad about it at all. A great place all around. read more

Pretty tasty Thai food. Went here when other Thai places were closed. The pork was probably the tastiest of the entrees. It had a nice flavor to the five spice, and had a nice simplicity to it: you could really taste both the pork and the five spice. We also got some mochi bars, and tbh they were the highlight of the meal. They were chewy, but not too chewy: they had a nice sweetness, and added a nice textural component. It's probably the best mochi anything I've ever had. We also had a coconut curry soup and a chicken noodle soup. And they were both... okay. I thought in both cases, they needed a bit more seasoning: maybe a bit more boldness. Could see myself picking up some mochi bars as a dessert in the future. It's a good Thai place with good food, and I could imagine an older person or someone who likes minimalistic food really enjoying a place like this. As someone who likes bold, exciting flavors, it was lacking a bit, but it was still tasty in its own way. read more
