    French Onion Soup
    colleen w.

Went here for restaurant week, we arrived early and were able to be sat right away which was nice. The atmosphere is quaint and eclectic and really reminded me of walking into my grandma's house which I'm sure was the point. Food wise the only noteworthy item was the French onion soup which was delicious but in comparison to other French onion soups in the area it wasn't enough to entice me to come back. My shrimp linguine only had 3 shrimps which I'm sure is a standard serving for this restaurant but in comparison to other places the price didn't justify only receiving 3 shrimps. The cocktails were great though! Don't think I'll be coming back due to the price point being too high for what you're getting.

As a 15 year plus downtown resident, this is our backyard. With 30 plus years in the hospitality field (now retired) I feel I can bring you real insight into our locations. The good, the bad and the ugly. If we run across a serious issue, I will always go directly to management and not post it. I truly believe you always must give management an opportunity to correct a serious issue. If not corrected and or just ignored, then I feel it is correct to inform the public - professionally. No establishment is perfect. I will bring to you smaller hiccups we may have come across. I will rarely comment on the taste of food - being bad, as that is a very personal thing. My wife and I disagree on taste of food and wine, no one is wrong or right. Now if the food is on fire, burned, under/overcooked to our requests, that would be mentioned. Found ourselves by the Pearl and checked on the OFFLINE application for nearby places to eat. Claudine on Grayson Street. Ladies you will love this place, not that I didn't enjoy it. The food was great! Most of the customers were lady groups having different types of gatherings. Great place to do this at a tea party theme place. Customer service was good. Then at the end of our meal our server stepped it up, giving us containers for our tea and labeling each container and placing them in a sturdy bag. We ordered two teas and had no idea we both would get PTS OF TEA lol - rookie mistake. A few notes and suggestions. If you go here to have a private conservation about whatever. Not the place. The building doesn't isolate the noise/talk at all. We heard many conversations and a few I wish I could get out of my head! With that said, we suggest lowering the music. It was a bit much with the talking and laughing and then add in the music. Nice touch, just suggest lowering the volume. Pricing, good for this area. A few items they are proud of, one being the $10 small pot of tea. The staff (front of the house as you entered and our server) asked us if this was our first time. Maybe a nice touch would have been when we ordered the tea, to inform us that it's a pot, not a cup. The menu, mmm mmm mmm. The items we ordered just see the pictures! PS flexible with Cindi and accommodating her vegetarian request.

The restaurant is a historic house that is beautifully redone. Each dining area is gorgeous complete with elaborate chandeliers and beautiful wall papers and paint. The drinks are spectacular, I had the spicy margarita and my husband had the old fashion both were perfectly balanced. I had the Lavender Linguine and it was pasta perfectly cooked, complimented with jumbo shrimp and the most flavorful sauce that was so buttery and creamy, I wanted to scrape the plate to get it all. The service was also excellent! This was my first visit but will certainly not be my last. ! I want to go back for tea time.! I highly recommend Restaurant Claudine for an amazingly prepared meal.

Food was SPECTACULAR. Service from a sweet host was great. He was so nice. Our server was "meh". I've been a server before-- she did not radiate positivity. But she did her job. The restaurant itself was very cozy and when it was full of people it was poppin!

Being a fan of this place, we wanted to give their brunch a try. First off, it is very quaint, located within a former private residence, and easy to access with free parking. You can usually find a spot directly in front of the restaurant. We started with the escargot in butter & garlic, which was excellent! I had the chicken & waffle, which was good, but could have been a little bigger (but with food costs these days, I certainly understand), but it was priced appropriately in my view. My wife had the muffuletta, which was also very good. It did come with a lot of olive tapenade. I suggest requesting that they go 'light' on that. The service was very good, and it was not overly busy. I did have a reservation on OpenTable, but you could have walked right in. It is a good option to get away from the crowd at the nearby Pearl. After brunch, we walked nearby to enjoy a cocktail outside at one of the neighboring places.

I'm a bit torn on this review. Our experience was such a mixed bag of good, okay, and bad. Good: really nice vibe and decor, cornbread was excellent, sweet potato biscuits were great addition, shrimp was seasoned perfectly Okay: drinks, service (although it took about 45 minutes to get our entrees after ordering), fried green tomatoes, Caesar salad Bad: the gumbo was basically gravy, no okra or sausage to be found. For a restaurant with Cajun vibes this was just sad Overall it was a very mediocre meal. I think we would go back and try some other options, we heard brunch is great but won't be at the top of the list.

Absolutely a must-dine for me. It's actually a renovated home so the inside is super cute with fun wallpaper, scones and chandeliers. I ordered the ceasar salad with fries and I will be dreaming about this lunch until the next time I have it. It was THAT good.

I went to Restaurant Claudine as a second resort when Smash'd across the street was closed. It was the best mistake that Smash'd made because Restaurant Claudine is amazing! I was celebrating my nursing school graduation and the server brought us their house champagne which was delicious and fruity. I was craving a burger and the down home burger with shoestring fries on the beautiful white plate was scrumptious! Overall, the ambiance, beauty, service, and delicious food will have me and my friends going back and you should too!

4.5 Stars. Saving the extra .5 star for tea? They serve trees specials in the afternoon! Michaela, our waitress, deserves 5 stars. Ambiance was amazing, this is a quaint little house turned dining experience. Interior decoration obviously had much thought out into it. See for yourselves!Located in the quirky downtown area and quickly becoming the ever trendiest Grayson Street with street parking. Slow night. Seated immediately, started with some already impressive Earl Gray tea, served with cream and sugar per request. Crab Beignets a little more savory and not as light and fluffy as expected. Champagne vinegar gastrique poured over it tableside was certainly an interesting choice; personally would have preferred something lighter and sweeter. Escargot was delightfully not overly salty or oiled. Moist and good, made excellent when coupled with their freshly baked baguettes. Ruby Trout was pleasantly light, with accompanying succotash and chow chow made for a versatile flavor profile. Pork Chop brined overnight, evenly tender throughout, with Hericot Verts, fancy foreign name for green beans, which added a welcome crispy twang. Not a huge meat piece, but dense so therefore filling. Dessert was Cardamom Cake with a lovely citrus orange taste. Was a little dry, but no real complaints. Price range maybe a tad higher than would make multiple return visits possible, but other than that would be a new favorite. As mentioned before, Michaela provided our dinner with her undivided attention, making our experience one we would love to repeat. Grandma Claudine, as she looks on from behind the hostess stand, would be proud!

The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, going above and beyond to make our dining experience unforgettable. The ambiance was perfect for a special occasion, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Our server was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring we had everything we needed. But the real star of the show was the food. Every dish was an absolute masterpiece, bursting with flavor and creativity. It was truly an exceptional meal. My favorite has to be the scallops!

If you've followed my "snooty social pariah about town" gastronomic adventures, then you know I hold French cuisine to a high standard. Too many places aim high but either fail to execute the standards (duck confit, escargot) or embarrass themselves with hipster "reinterpretations" of those very standards. When I perused Restaurant Claudine's sparse online menu, I wasn't sure what to expect. I saw a roster of decidedly French dishes interspersed with several decidedly non-French dishes -- a potential disaster of confused intentions -- yet I trusted the pedigree of Executive Chef Roland Gutierrez (formerly of Supper at The Hotel Emma) and Chef de Cuisine Cassie Ramsey (formerly of the phenomenal, ultra-exclusive Mixtli). With that kind of culinary gravitas at the helm, how could any restaurant falter? I am pleased to report that Claudine is indeed an outstanding restaurant, not only for Francophiles but also for fans of what I would call "upscale Southern." The menu pays homage to the French classics (the aforementioned duck confit and escargot) but also draws inspiration from Cajun/Creole (gumbo, blackened shrimp salad) and even the deep south (fried chicken, cornbread, chicken-fried steak). Having tried a record thirteen dishes over the course of three visits, I am prepared to place Restaurant Claudine among the top-ten eateries in all of San Antonio. For ease of reference, I have highlighted and rated (on a scale of 0 to 5) several of the most notable dishes among the eleven I've tried. Enjoy, dear reader! _____________________________________________ Cornbread (5.0): The frugal minded would scoff at paying $11 for cornbread, but this is not your ordinary cornbread. Unlike most iterations -- which veer towards crumbly, dry, and overly sweet -- the five thick slices on my plate bore the texture of a buttery, dense pound cake with hints of cornmeal. The accompanying compound butter was made from scratch and smoked in house, imbuing it with a subtle mesquite flavor that called to mind good southern barbecue. Blackened Shrimp Salad (5.0): Shrimp is a difficult protein, as finding the sweet spot between undercooked and overcooked can be tricky. The three meaty Gulf Coast shrimps on this salad were cooked perfectly. The blackening seasoning was intensely flavorful but not overpowering. Even the homemade ranch hit all the right notes: the perfect alchemy of texture (just thick enough to coat the greens), creaminess, and herbaceousness. Escargot Champignon (5.0): I must admit I was perplexed by the open-faced baguette interpretation, but one bite convinced me that this bold bastardization of the French staple was a triumph in ever regard. The escargots were cooked perfectly (not overcooked/rubbery), the oyster mushrooms made the dish look and feel more substantial, and the brie contributed a bit of funk (think "Andy" by Les Rita Mitsouko) to the traditional "chanson" of a classic escargot dish. Yes, I just referenced Les Rita Mitsouko in a Yelp review. This is one reason among many why you adore and adulate me. Duck Confit (5.0): Far too often, this dish succumbs to one of two pitfalls: a rubbery, unrendered fat cap or dried-out duck floss beneath the desiccated shell. Chef Cassie, however, clearly knows how to execute this dish, as the skin was shatteringly crisp and the meat beneath was moist and delicate. The butternut squash puree added a subtle sweetness, while the glazed rainbow carrots contributed texture and earthiness. It was also a very pretty dish, as evidenced by my equally stunning photography. It is the current featured photo (as of May 5, 2023) for good reason. Chicken-Fried Steak (5.0): This is Texas, so we all know what constitutes a great chicken-fried steak: good-quality meat pounded thin, a crispy, craggily shell, and a cream gravy redolent with rendered fat from the fry pan. Claudine's CFS hit all these cues but added a touch of creamy Dijon to the gravy, giving it a pleasant twang. The blistered green beans were seasoned perfectly, and the potatoes mousseline (don't dare call them "mashed potatoes," toi voyou!) were creamy and dreamy. I was so impressed with this dish that I send my compliments to the kitchen. Alas, it is no longer on the menu as of this writing. The critic in me feels awkward awarding Restaurant Claudine a perfect score across every dish, but try as I might (for I am indeed a nitpicky bastard), I cannot find a single fault with any of dishes. To say I am duly impressed with the cuisine would be an understatement. My only gripe is the quasi-residential location. The repurposed, remodeled 1920s homestead is a gorgeous homage what I remember seeing on road trips through Savannah, Georgia and NOLA, but parking is a big issue, especially on weekends. If my review persuades you to go (and it should), then definitely make a reservation and arrive early, lest you end up parking a mile down the street.

My main course was the rainbow trout which was very flavorful and cooked to perfection. The green beans were incredibly fresh and the rice was fluffy. The crème brûlée is dangerous. I absolutely loved the aesthetics -- there was plenty of parking, and when you walk inside, the décor feels classic, elegant, and welcoming. Our server, David, was extremely professional. His knowledge, attentiveness, and overall professionalism made this a really special birthday night for my boyfriend. We appreciated all the recommendations he made. We started with a Tempranillo red wine and a specialty cocktail. For appetizers, we chose the goat cheese salad and the French onion soup. Both were excellent -- the goat cheese salad was fresh and light, with an amazing crunch and flavor from the cheese. I would definitely order it again. The French onion soup was classic but honestly one of the best I've had, with the perfect balance of onion, salt, and cheese. For our mains, we ordered the beef Wellington and the lobster risotto, along with sides of blue cheese cauliflower and scalloped potatoes. The beef Wellington was surprisingly good -- I loved the crisp puff pastry combined with the mushrooms, beef, and sauce. The lobster risotto was chef's kiss -- absolutely delicious. I'm so glad they introduced the new menu because this dish was outstanding. The blue cheese cauliflower tasted good, though I wish the cream sauce had been a bit thicker so it would coat the cauliflower better. The scalloped potatoes, however, were phenomenal. We finished with a slice of strawberry cake that was incredibly moist and reminded me of strawberry ice cream with that nostalgic crumb coating -- really delicious. Overall, we were both extremely happy with our meals and the experience. We'll definitely be back to try more items and highly recommend it!

After reading many positive reviews on Yelp, we decided to try La Frite Belgian Bistro. We initially attempted to make a reservation for three through Yelp, but it wouldn't allow us to book for our desired time. We were able to secure one reservation for two and another for one. Fortunately, after calling the restaurant just prior to opening, they kindly combined the reservations and accommodated the three of us without issue. When we arrived on a Saturday evening, we were pleased to find the main dining area small and quaint, creating an intimate and charming atmosphere. At first, we thought this was the only dining space, but they also have additional storefront dining areas on each side, providing ample seating. We arrived shortly after opening, and only a few tables were occupied. That quickly changed -- by the time we left, every table in the restaurant was filled. We were warmly greeted at the door and seated at a front window table, which offered a great view outside. The gentleman who seated us also served as our waiter. I don't recall his name, but he was exceptionally professional and attentive, providing outstanding service throughout the evening. We ordered a carafe of white wine, which our server recommended as a great value -- and it truly was. For starters (using non-French names for simplicity), we ordered a large portion of mussels in a basil, garlic, butter, and white wine broth. The mussels (moules) are offered in seven different sauces, and after tasting ours, I wish we could have tried every one of them. They were plump and fresh, served over an abundant, flavorful broth that paired perfectly with the fresh bread -- ideal for soaking up every last drop. Our second shared appetizer was escargot prepared Burgundy-style in a rich herb butter sauce. The escargot were tender, earthy, and generously coated in a garlic-forward herb butter that was absolutely delicious. Again, the fresh bread ensured none of that wonderful sauce went to waste. For entrées, we began with the Steak Au Poivre. We selected the tenderloin, which arrived perfectly cooked to medium rare. It was tender, well-seasoned, and accompanied by crisp fries and a fresh selection of cooked vegetables. Our second entrée was a crab and mushroom crepe. The delicate crepe was filled with fresh crab and mushrooms in a light white cream sauce that also draped over the top. The flavors were fresh, balanced, and beautifully seasoned. Although we were extremely full, it was impossible to pass on dessert. We ordered both the lemon tart and the chocolate tart. The lemon tart featured a crisp, flavorful crust with a firm, well-balanced lemon filling that delivered just the right amount of brightness. The chocolate tart shared the same crisp crust but was filled with a rich, decadent chocolate center with a smooth consistency that allowed the flavor to linger pleasantly on the palate. We will definitely return on our next visit. This truly is a wonderful gem in San Antonio

Service was excellent from start to finish. We were never rushed. We started with the escargot which were served with some basic bread. Delicious. Then each of us had the large mussels with frites. I had the Marinières (white wine, cream, shallots, garlic) and my friend had the Basque (white wine, Spanish chorizo, red pepper, chili, smoked paprika). We both loved what we got. The frites were very tasty and served with two dipping sauces. They were not as crispy as I would've liked but they were very good. For dessert we shared the lemon tart which was the perfect ending for a delightful meal. So many delicious sounding things on the menu. Will be back next time in town.

Hubby chose the Restaurant Week menu, starting with the Halibut Cheeks as his appetizer, Grilled Lamb Chops for the entree, and Chocolate Mousse for dessert. I had a taste of all his courses and it was a wise choice. Everything was delicious! They had a regular prix fixe menu and Dad and I shared this: Escargots, Sauteed Flounder, and Creme Brulee. Our food was equally good. Brian was our attentive server.

The service was amazing .. though as they got busy about 6.30pm, service fell off a little. I do recommend a reservation for any time after 6pm. We started with small plates. The French Onion soup had a hearty flavor though it was more bread than broth. The Pear gorgonzola salad was amazing ... pears soaked in red wine paired with room temp gorgonzola, green and a light vinaigrette. The escargot brought yums. I had the braised short ribs. Super tender .. fall apart. I would have liked a little more veggies and a heartier sauce. The streak and fries was cooked and seasoned perfectly. For dessert, the creme brulee was glass on top and pure custard underneath ... perfect consistency. The mousse was a deep chocolate flavor with a tasty almond cookie. So many items I want to go back and try. Definitely recommend!!!

Our twelve guests ranged in age from 14-79 years, and everyone had a wonderful experience. We began with waters for the table, soft drinks, and cocktails/mocktails (Man Walks into a Bar, Amba No. 5, Don Alberto, Green Shug Collins). Due to our large party, we had booked a chef's tasting experience, which was spectacular. The appetizers were plentiful, flavorful, and unique. Our server, Anissa, did a wonderful job of explaining each dish-- its components, highlights, even suggesting that after finishing the beef dumplings, we stir the oil and yogurt together for an amazing pita dipping sauce. Our meal included four meats-- actually five, considering an off menu chef's creation for our pescatarian guest. It was such an immersive experience, I never took out my phone to capture photos of the food (or our group, sadly). Three desserts topped off the evening. When (not if) we return, we'll certainly request Anissa again. She made the evening a complete delight, even bringing out celebratory candles for our honored guests.

The hummus with the fresh pita was probably my favorite part of the meal, and the grilled skewers had a really nice char without being dry. The Turkish coffee was also strong and really good. Service was quick and servers paid attention to detail. Great place for date night or hanging out with friends. Plenty of great food options to choose from. Glad I tried it because the quality was amazing!
