6:30PN dinner reservations on a Saturday night! We were greeted and promptly seated in a lovely room. I love the old school restaurant styles and the atmosphere did not disappoint. Our server promptly furnished us with water and took our drink order. Bottle of Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc). We opted for two of evening specials...Pan Sear Red Snapper with Lump Crabmeat on a small bed of Mushroom Risotto and a Cold Lobster and Crab Salad Entree. The food was superb! We both think these were some of the best meals we've had in SA. Dessert was sharing some homemade Cherry Ice Cream! We absolutely loved this restaurant and will return soon! read more

Service is always a 5. Food seems to be getting worse every time we visit. Medium rare steaks were served like charcoal - so overdone. The restaurant itself is a dump. Paint spilled from the last paint job all over the floor, bad smelling, dirty floors, rotten base boards and the bathrooms are atrocious. read more

First time here, it is tucked in the back of the building, dark, cozy and nicely appointed. We found our server wasn't very attentive, seemed to get easily distracted and would stay talking at other tables while we waited for water, drinks or food. We had a bit of a last minute change of Thanksgiving plans and were able to sneak in a reservation for Thanksgiving day at Fredericks. The setting is very elegant and cozy, and we were seated very quickly. Half our group got the Thanksgiving dinner, and there were a few other dishes ordered (salmon and halibut). The Thanksgiving dinners were good, we were all impressed with the sides especially being good. The halibut was the stand out entree of the table. For dessert, we had a few different things ordered (creme brulee, tiramisu, cherry ice cream, and a chocolate mousse). The desserts overall were very good but the creme brulee was not quite what we expected. It was served cold and lacked the crunch that you really want on the top. Service wise the waitstaff was very friendly and helpful but there was some mistakes on the food that was ordered and just seemed like they may be having an off day communication wise. When you walk in you know you are going to have a great dining experience. The rolls arrive piping fresh and delicious!! We weren't approached by a server right away but I thought that was great so we could catch up with our friends. The Old Fashioned was good. I had the Frederick's Salad which was nice but the Champagne Vinaigrette was the star!!! I think it may be one of the best dressings I have had. My husband had the onion soup which he wasn't too impressed with. He orders it without the cheese so it may be quite superb with it. I ordered the Shrimp and Scallops over Mushroom Risotto which was very good. My husband had the Lamb Chops and I got to taste them. They were perfectly prepared. So Yummy!! Before we arrived, I had scanned the menu and saw the Rum Euphoria and knew I was going to order it. I was so looking forward to it because I cannot remember a dessert that really caught my attention like this one did. Unfortunately, they were out of it!!! Boo hoo! Visiting again now that they are part of the San Antonio Gold Club. The food and service are always on point. Definitely a long-term classy staple of the San Antonio restaurant scene. Brett was our server this evening and did a fantastic job. He, as well as the manager, were not familiar with the Gold Club discount app, and thanked us for educating them. We got a free Caesar Salad on the app, which was so crisp and fresh. Bread service consisted of these little rolls so hot from the oven, crusty and soft inside. And they didn't just bring you a couple and let them get cold. They came back after we finished the first ones and offered us some more hot pillows of deliciousness. We ordered the Flash Fried Brussels Sprouts with a Thai chili sauce, which were delicious. The sauce was a little sweet, which balanced with the heat of the peppers. My wife ordered French Onion Soup and French Escargot with Spanish Chorizo as her entrees. Not what I order, but she said both were delicious. I ordered the wild caught Dover Sole which was lightly floured and sautéed with a lemon butter sauce and a variety of sides. Or should I say a lot of sides; roasted cauliflower, potato au gratin, asparagus, mushrooms, and sautéed spinach. Each one perfectly cooked. Team service is what I am accustomed to and they definitely practice this concept. As soon as we were done with a plate someone whisked it away. For the most part the crowd is a little older, though we saw one family with middle school aged kids. I loved every dish. Can't tell if it's because I'm Vietnamese and this was the perfect blend of Eurasian food but everything was perfectly flavored. They use a lot of cilantro in their dishes (bc it's a very Vietnamese thing to do) so if you dislike cilantro might want to mention that. They also have traditional American dishes like candied brussel sprouts. I wasn't a huge fan but nothing against the chef it's just my person taste. Anyone who loves Brussel sprouts would love their version. The ice burg lettuce was a hit. The friend that got the halibut cleaned his dish. It's tucked away in a corner so a bit hard to find but worth it. read more

Truly and interesting menu, great service, and bursting with flavor. First, the menu seems to be different from time to time (seasonal?) but this fine dining establishment has Pho as an appetizer right below French Onion soup and next to crab cakes. We started off with charred octopus with quinoa and some special sauce. It wasn't too big nor too small of a portion size but it was worth my $16 to give it a try. It was pleasant of an experience in my mouth. Then we had the Frederick salad....something about the dressing was super well balanced vinegarette, very very impressive. I expected just another garden salad but this was so much more with fresh ingredients. The seafood paella...not your mom's paella, more like a medley or a sampler of all their seafood options in one dish, each perfectly cooked, and with some cous cous in the center. Misnomer? Either way, it was one of the cheaper ones on the menu and it probably may be the best in the restaurant. Well worth a try. Plus, I'm from Alaska, so I tried many salmon dishes....this restaurant did it justice. Kept it very very juicy and yet created a crispy crust...without the skin, they must have a special grill in the back. It was like a creme brûlée of salmon....YUM! My half duck was super tender and tasted like what I expected but they had pickled greens that came out as a side with it that tasted like a cross between kimchi and sauerkraut. That was epic. Ginger creme brûlée?! Never tried it, always just creme brûlée but this le trio...have us a sample of three different desserts. Ginger creme brûlée was unique, bursting with flavor, and sooooo good. What a delight and surprise. 11 of us went to our weekly Happy Friday adventure. The restaurant is clean, well maintained and welcoming! The waiter was efficient, bring our drinks out in short order. My lemon drop martini was the best I have had in quite a while. We ordered a number of appetizers, all excellent. I enjoyed the ribs and calamari the best my. Went for an anniversary lunch. Service was slow. Server that brought the tea was non communicative - didn't talk at all Our stone crab appetizer was somewhat fishy and not inexpensive. Our food took forever and then we were told that the chef overlooked our tickets and was working on our food now - we got to the restaurant when it was empty and by then there were eight tables of people who all had their food!! I was just about to give up and get our check and leave. Food came and was adequate however potatoes and veggies were barely room temp - not hot. Crossing this off our list - hadn't been in a while and won't be returning. We did get an "I'm sorry" - wasn't looking for a free meal or entree or anything, but thought they would at least comp my soup or something!!!!! read more

Frederick's is hyped as a fine dining restaurant featuring French-Asian fusion (Vietnamese specifically), located around the backside of a building off of Broadway. The menu is intriguing, and we shared a majority of the menu dining here recently as a family. APPS: Tried the calamari, the sticky short ribs, and the grilled octopus. Presentation for all was, in a word, interesting, with the breaded mollusc rings served in a bead of noodles (carbs on carbs) and the grilled version served chopped in a medley of tomatoes and onions that was tasty but not particularly photogenic. The ribs were shareable and quite well flavored, would recommend this dish over the others. ENTREES: Several options for seafood lovers, with filleted fish in various preparations crusted or crispy, grilled or poached. The red snapper in particular was well-prepared with a Beurre-blanc and mustard sauce that didn't overwhelm. The NZ rack of lamb was just okay, overcooked from the requested medium-rare and served with a red wine garlic sauce that didn't really complement the protein. DESSERTS: Despite a table full of dessert lovers, we were so full that we only ordered one. For a small restaurant, they feature an impressive 10 options, and we agreed on the Chocolate Pecan Cake, which cites Emeril Lagasse's recipe. Prettily plated but this is obviously premade who knows how far in advance and either misnamed or poorly stored, as texture and density are comparable to a fudge not a cake. Pecan presence was disappointingly minimal and this single slice went unfinished at a table of five. Dishes were hit or miss but the experience was perplexing. High-end setting with private booths and white table clothes and stellar service, but they offer a groupon and happy hour specials and had a couple literally making out at a table behind us. Something was just distinctly off about every area of our experience. Rounding up an "A-OK" experience and open to a return visit, SA needs more places trying new things- this spot just needs to fine-tune them. read more

While the food was good, the service and attention to detail was very much lacking. The restaurant had a minimum of 8 empty tables towards the door and yet we were seated in back by a large, loud party and we literally could not hear each other speak. We inquired about a move to another table but were told they were going to be occupied and yet 2 hours later they were never occupied. THIS WILL WEIGH HEAVILY ON OUR FUTURE DINING FOR ANY OCCASION. We sat at the table for a minimum of 15 minutes with no one ever coming to our table. We were considering leaving at that point. The grilled lobster was delicious. The beet salad was delicious however it was the smallest portion we had ever had there. This was one of the big mistakes by the server. It appeared to have been split 3 ways which was not what we had ordered. The creme brûlée was not good at all. It tasted old and had no brûlée about it. The instructions for ordering our food were not adhered to. The noise from the large party likely prevented the server from hearing our orders. This restaurant used to be one of our favorites and we used to consider it fine dining however when you are forced to sit next to a fraternity like atmosphere it ruins the experience. We were there for a special birthday and it is highly likely we will not consider Fredericks for any special occasion again. read more

Visited this place for the first time on a Wednesday evening; small and intimate with elegant décor. Clearly very popular with the boomer crowd, but nothing wrong with that! Since it was a weekday, we got in at happy hour. Bread service typically $.50 a person was cut down to $.30 a person, specials on wine and cocktails as well. Bread was hot and fresh, the wine (Malbec and Cabernet) were divine. For entree I got the veal sirloin which came with a mushroom sauce, mixed veggies, and potato au gratin; absolutely to die for! It may have been one of the best pieces of beef I've ever had. Husband got lamb chops; came with the same sides. There was nothing left but bones when he was done with it. Dessert was the rum euphoria; I wish I could have eaten more of it but I was two glasses of wine and a meal deep at this point! Wait staff was extremely attentive. I've been to the pizza place next to Fredrick's so many times throughout the years, but I had never been into Fredrick's. The entrance is so unassuming you would never know how much deliciousness was inside. The temporary lobster fest banner is what drew us in after going to Florios Pizza, only to find it was closed for a week vacation. Upon entry the restaurant gives a cozy vintage vibe with dim lighting and kind of lounge feels. Everything on their menu sounds delicious. We ordered lobster, calamari, escargot with chorizo, and a beet salad. It was all amazing! I'm sad I just found out about this place. I will definitely be back! read more

We used to love Frederick's after discovering it in January 2024. We've been about a dozen times since then, but the last few months have been downhill. Four times we've had the Duck A L'Orange, and two times it's been wonderful while two times it's been terrible. Some appetizers have gone wrong. The paté has been questionable. Service has been hit or miss, with great servers in the past. On our last visit March 11, we had to drag the name of the single special out of our server, but later we heard her name additional specials at another table without being asked. I was served a dirty wine glass and a dirty bread plate. Even the music is worse - what used to be classical is now repetitive dancepop. That March 11 visit will be our last. read more

We ate at Fredricks in San Antonio tonight, a French restaurant. The service was excellent. Our waiter's name was Brett. The ambiance was nice--a dimly lit room with tables full of respectful, well dressed people. The food can only be described as just "okay," and certainly not worth the crazy prices. A note: we don't mind crazy prices for crazy good food. This was not that. One of the main reasons I love French food is the seared fois gras. I was thrilled to see it on their menu (but not surprised given this is a French restaurant ). I ordered it. After the amuse bouche the waiter advised me that they were out of fois gras and offered the fried spring rolls instead. Fried spring rolls as a substitute for fois gras? Whatever. A French restaurant that is out of fois gras is like McDonald's running out of fries. Major disappointment. Next came the salad. We ordered one to split that seemed like perfection. Walnut with blue cheese and red onion. What we got was good, but not what we ordered. We got a Ceasar salad with chopped walnuts. No blue cheese that we noticed--it seemed like to us like it was covered in canned parmigiana. No red onion except for one tiny piece on my spouse's. It was okay. The streak au poivre (pepper steak) was regular steak with some funky tasting pepper sauce. We both thought that the sauce tasted musty or moldy--not right. The flavor was not good in our view. The gran mariner soufflé came out and looked burnt to the point of being black on the top, and the soufflé had fallen. I thought maybe it was chocolate, but the inside color was light. We sent it back and immediately ordered the cream brûlée. It came out --the top was not crispy at all. It was a flan, with a good raspberry sauce, but not crème brûlée. A bummer. These are all basic French dishes. Nothing that should stump the band. We have ordered and enjoyed these same dishes many, many times at other French restaurants. We have cooked each of these dishes ourselves many, many times. You might ask: what do you expect in San Antonio? For a total bill for 2 people over $300, we expected much, much better. In fact, we have had many great meals in SA--for example, Paesanos' oso bucco is fantastic and is just down the street. I doubt we will be back to Fredricks. read more

We visited Frederick's for Mother's Day brunch and had a wonderful culinary experience. Our service was very good and the food was absolutely scrumptious. A couple of us enjoyed their mimosas. The brussel sprouts were amazing! The others loved their lobster bisque. Our entrees--lamb chops, beef tenderloin--were perfect! And, last but certainly not least, our desserts were out-of-this-world phenomenal! Everyone tried something different. From tiramisu to homemade cherry ice cream, we all delighted in their tasty sweets. It is a bit pricey but it is worth it, in my opinion. Also, Frederick's is a bit hidden in the Alamo Heights area but this hidden gem is definitely worth the trek. read more

The place is small so definitely make a reservation on a weekend. The food uses high quality ingredients, cooked to perfection. Service was 5 stars, our waitress was very attentive. My bf said his meal was the best meal he has had in a long time. My shrimp and scallop dish was delicious, I do wish there was more of the mushroom risotto though because it was so good...drool. The only thing, and it's a small thing is they coated the shrimps and scallops in some sort of light breading before searing and that's totally fine with me on shrimp but I like my scallops to be seared in oil and butter and that's it! In general we liked it; (just one complaint) the duck is amazing but the paella is not really a paella at all, it is not a bad plate but definitely not paella; barely any rice and it was watery from the juices from the seafood; I do not recommend that plate but the rest was very good. As far as atmosphere is concerned, you're at the right place. Dinner for two, fine. Service is efficient but not exceptionally friendly. Food is overpriced but good. Restaurant is clean overall. I will start by saying that the food here was absolutely delicious. Our entrees were the Duck la'orange and the Parmesan crusted snapper. Absolutely delicious, major thanks to the chef. Our experience however was a different situation. Our waitress was a lady named Letty. She was quite passively prejudice throughout our entire date. My boyfriend and I wanted to tryout a new restaurant and we saw Fredericks on the list for restaurant week. As we were looking through the menu, Letty mentioned that "it might be cheaper if we shared an entree off the regular menu" rather than each ordering the $55 restaurant week special. Later when bringing us the check she mentioned that she "went ahead and gave (us) our drinks with the happy hour price". I was unaware that there was a happy hour, however she concluded our stay providing further information. She stated that they had a great "cheap" happy hour (showed us the menu) and mentioned there was a room in the back, then looked to my boyfriend and stated that he could "watch sports" back there. Upon entrance, I'm sure many could look around and see that this is not a typical place where one would chose to watch sports. It's unfortunate that in 2023 people are still passing judgments solely based off looks. Our bill was $112 and $134 after tip. Unfortunately our date night was not what we expected nor wanted it to be, and for that reason I could not recommend this establishment. read more

Terrific service from the brother of the chef, told us a bit of his story from being a chef himself before moving to front of house. Nice guy. The tenderloin I had here was better than multiple other steakhouse chains in San Antonio. I won't name names, but it pays to support local business in my opinion. Recommended: Brussel sprouts, beef tenderloin, halibut with citrus beurre blanc Brussel sprouts: fried to a terrific crisp, perfectly cooked. Roasted brussel sprouts wish they were as consistently good at this. My only qualm here is that the sauce was a little too boring for "asian spice" - tasted like maesri sweet thai chili sauce. Toss this stuff in a little fish sauce, lime, palm sugar, and roasted sticky rice powder and I'm all in. 3.5/5 Crispy Calamari: tasted like the same sauce as the brussel sprouts, one-dimensionally sweet. Tasted fresh and the cilantro was a nice touch though. Fried lightly, very tender, was not overcooked or rubbery. 3.5/5 Beef tenderloin: very basic steamed/blanched veg with maybe a little butter, fine. Potatoes au gratin were also fine, maintained their texture and had a nice hit of cheesiness. The beef was perfect - cooked perfectly edge to edge medium rare like I asked. The green peppercorn sauce was perfect. Not too salty, perfect mouthfeel and depth of flavor. Perfect example of a french sauce. 4.5/5 Halibut with citrus beurre blanc: my dining companion had this dish and she said the fish was very fresh and perfectly cooked. I tried the citrus beurre blanc and it was perfect - nailed the body and flavor. Again, a perfect rendition of a classic french sauce. 4.5/5 Trio of desserts: the ginger creme brulee was nice, not too heavy, ginger was not overbearing, I don't think the top cracked very well though. The chocolate terrine had nice depth of chocolate. The rum euphoria was pretty dense and decadent, nice hit of booze, a little too sweet. 3.5/5 read more

We tried Frederick's because we had a Groupon and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere was very classy but you didn't feel like you had to dress up...casual was fine. It is a very intimate layout and they probably had about 20 tables. You immediately felt like you walked into a cozy, classy atmosphere when you walked in. They had a small bar set up to the right when you entered and there were about 6 or 8 bar stools. Sean(sp?) was our waiter and he was fabulous. He was very knowledgeable and attentive but not hovering. They have a streamlined menu with a variety of land and seafood options. We tried 3 different entrees in our party....we did the Filet with the peppercorn sauce, the lambchops, and the parmesan crusted pork shank. All were very tasty, tender and cooked to perfection. I love peppercorn sauce so I was in love with my dish....the sauce is what sets it apart. The filet was ordered to medium and there isn't anything they could have done better with the way it was fixed or presented. Loved it! We did the trio for dessert....small bites of 3 different yummy desserts (rum cake, creme brulee, and another chocolate creation). Loved them and great to try a small bit of each vs ordering only one large one. Can't wait to come back again and try more! read more
