I've been going to this REI location since it's opening. I have purchased a few Cannondale bicycles from them because of their excellent customer service. They fine tune every bike before it goes out the door. They also have an excellent repair shop. I took my older Cannondale road bike in for repairs after a bad crash. I needed 2 index shifters, a rear wheel, a stem and a few other miscellaneous small parts. They were very helpful locating the correct parts and wanted to do the repairs! I went to 2 other local bike shops to get a repair quote, they both tried to sell me a new bike, no interest in repairing my favorite bike! I went back this week for a cable adjustment. They took care of it while I waited and it works great, Thank you! read more

I came here this past Sunday to find a new sleeping bag for my upcoming backpacking trip. There was one that I wanted on sale but it was not in stock. However, there were some available in the Rancho Cucamonga store. The staff member gave me the item number and recommended that I go up front to customer service and have them order from that store and have it shipped to my house. So I do that and staff mentions that someone will call me later to confirm. About an hour later I get a call saying that there is none available in the Rancho store and that the nearest available store that had it was in Denver. With standard shipping it wouldn't get here in time for my trip. Two-day shipping would cost me an additional $25 so I told the guy that I would think about it and give him a call back. Flash forward to the next day I get a voicemail from REI. It turns out they did have my sleeping bag available in the Rancho store and that it would ship out to me by the end of the week. Sweet! I was pretty stoked. The person who left the voicemail did not leave an order number or tracking number so I decided to call back to get those. The lady who answered the phone was not able to find the person who left me the voicemail for me (apparently she left for the day). After a few minutes of being put on hold she comes back on the line and says the following: - I can't find your order - I don't know how to help you - There is a long line of customers in the store - Call back the next morning Wow really?! That was extremely rude and not helpful at all. You didn't even bother to take down my contact information to follow up with me. Also by saying you have a long line of customers in store, basically tells me that my call is not important to you and that serving customers in the store is your priority. Let me say this. I am extremely disappointed with this REI and do not plan on coming back to this location again. I will probably take my business to either the Huntington Beach or Rancho Cucamonga location. I would've given a lower rating but its saving grace is the quality and selection of their merchandise and the service I received in the backpack and footwear departments. read more

I'm not gonna lie. I went in expecting to try some trail shoes and running shorts on then buy them online for cheaper. The shoes were the same price as online, and the REI brand running shorts were high quality. So $170 later... (I also paid $20 for a lifetime membership which gets you 10% back annually, periodic huge discounts, etc.) I'm an REI fan. To which your noob staff says: We can't let dogs in (1) we sell food, (2) we are in a busy mall, (3) it's not safe in the parking lot... Came in to this REI with a friend who was in need of a camelbak. It was pretty busy at the time and there were a couple disorganized sections of the store. It seemed they were pretty understaffed for the volume of customers that were there. However, we were acknowledged and were asked if everything we found was alright and its for experiences like that, which is why I'm a fan of REI. Sure, REI has a lot to choose from for those who go outdoors, and you will get what you pay for, whether good quality or high quality but I base a lot of my reviews for these type of stores on customer service since that is really the tipping point to why I would shop here over a competitor. So overall, this REI is worth going to. Knowing that the employees will still be sure to acknowledge you even with how busy and understaffed it can be at a time, it's great to know I will be approached to have an opportunity to ask any questions I may have. This is my first bad review on yelp. I drove to REI on November 15th with the intent of purchasing a backpack and hiking shoes. That's worth around $300.00. REI was closed due to a location change. The store voicemail said it would be open the next day so I drove to the new location on November 16th with the same goal of purchasing a backpack and hiking shoes. To my dismay on November 16th, they were only open until 6pm because it was a "test day". This was not stated on their voicemail. If I'd have known that they were closing early, I would not have skipped my jiujitsu class, instead I would have gone on Wednesday. While inside the store I was helped by Tori who did an excellent job of helping me pick a back pack. In the shoe dept I was helped by Ed. I asked to try on three pairs of shoes and had planned to purchase the one that I liked best. However due to the recent move he couldn't find any of them. I selected another 2 pairs but he couldn't find those either. So I selected another two pairs of shoes...he came back with a pair that he had recommended and nothing else. I asked him, "What about the pair of shoes that I wanted to try on?". After he realized that the customer is the decision maker, he went back to get the pair that I wanted to try on. Just then the store manager Chris walked by and said that the store was closing. He said, "Today is a test day for our new location, thank you for taking part in it". This bothered me a bit, because I didn't feel like taking part in their test day. I want to purchase two things and leave. Then of the female employees in the shoe dept mentioned that I was the last customer in the store. I took the hint and headed for the door. I didn't want to be rushed into purchase a pair of shoes anyways. As I exited I stopped by to talk to Chris who I assumed was the store manager. I just wanted to explain that I was disappointed that they didn't specifically mention that they were planning to close at 6pm on the voice mail. Before I could say those two sentences, Chris interrupted me THREE times to placate me by apologize for the limited hours AS HE WAS CLOSING THE DOOR. I would have returned the next day to purchase the back pack and hiking shoes, but Chris was rude. Finally I said, "What's your name?" He replied, "Chris". I said, "Chris, you've just interrupted me three times and I haven't even gotten to finish my thought. Tomorrow i'm going to call and complain about your service." As I walked away Chris said that he would help me find my shoes. I thought to myself, thanks for the afterthought but I really don't feel like being the target of your frustrations. I called their hot line in WA and filed a complaint with them and GREG who is Chris's manager. If I do not hear back from then by tomorrow, I'm going to spend $300.00 at sports chalet instead. read more

Last year when I went here for ski maintenance, they were amazing! But this year they messed up our order BIG time. First, they gave us back someone else's skis after maintenance, which is ruing both our family's trip and theirs! Second, they messed up our order with which boots for which skis, so now I have to pay again to get it fixed! REI is another home for our family outdoor needs. The inspiration stemmed from simply walking in one day to be warmly welcomed by knowledgable staff. I've purchased several mountain bikes, a Cannondale SuperEvo Six which was almost impossible to source, and much more. My daughters prefer to come here and learn more about outdoor adventures than anything else. I know that ordering online is a breeze by today's standard, but having a retail experience is also important and appreciate service. I love REI. But i'm torn for this one. I used to go to the one in Santa Ana off the freeway. It was closer to me and easy to get to being right next to the off/on ramps. There was plenty of parking and not much else next to it. But they moved to this location. It's a little bit further but it's in the middle of the Tustin Marketplace. It's alot bigger and seems more open and lighter. But it's a pain when your competing with thousands of shoppers for the neighboring businesses. I can tell you this I will avoid this place like the plague during holiday season. Thats the reason for the 4 stars. As far as the selection and product its REI. Yeah some of the stuff is pricey but it's pricey wherever your get a North Face jacket or a Patagonia Merino Wool sweater. You get good quallity gear and clothing. And if for some reason it fails or you don't like it you can return it for a full refund no questions asked years later like Cost-Co or Sams Club. Plus there's the member dividend if you join the Co-Op. They also rent gear from kayaks to snow shoes to skis and snowboards. The rental prices are cheaper than if you go up the mountain and get a rental up there plus you keep it the entire trip. Also you can check out the used gear sales they have. Sometimes damaged sometimes just not used by their previous owners. They also provide training classes from mountain biking to Leave No Trace camping. Another cool thing is they have vacations you can go on with REI guides to Utah and Vermont as well as foreign locales like Macchu Picchu in Peru. So what are you waiting for go out there get your gear and get out there and explore, or at least look the part. PS For those wondering no you don't need to be a member to enter or purchase items. But highly recommend, it's worth it. read more

I went to REI for my first time a few days ago excited to find some cool camping/outdoors gear. I'm sorry to say I was very disappointed, the customer service was non-existent and the store arrangement made no sense. I spent a good 20 min walking around this store looking for first aid supplies without any luck, and the ten thousand employees they had walking the area never offered any assistance as I wandered and the one guy I asked had no idea. Very clean, organized, and well-staffed REI. They rent snowshoes at reasonable prices, which many locations do not. They don't charge for the first day and return day, so if you rent in the morning on Friday and return them Sunday night, you only get charged one day! I went to the garage sale on Saturday 3/12/16. The garage sale is held in a large tent outside the entrance. By 7AM there were about 400 people in line and it stretched around the tent. Here's some rough data (that may not apply to other garage sales) First person - 6:30PM the day before 15th ~ 11PM 50th ~ 3:30AM 100th ~ 4:30AM 200th ~ 5:45AM 400th - 7AM When they open the garage sale, they let about 25 people in. Then they let 25 people in about 1-2 min later. I think the first 50-75 people have a good shot at getting the first stab at the goods. Most people grab anything that is remotely interesting, then they put things back that they don't need. People coming in later can potentially get a decent deal from items that are put back. I hear that items that aren't sold get marked down at some point later in the day. Also, items are added to the garage sale periodically but are usually snatched up very quickly. Some of the better deals that I saw, to get an idea of what's offered: MSR Lightning Explore snowshoes, used once, marked damaged but works fine (MSRP $269) for $86 MSR Revo Explore (used) for $80. Kahtoola Microspikes (used) for $30 Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Axe (used) for $60 Black Diamond Sabertooth Crampons (used) for $65 Like new items/used once are typically about 40% off. Used, undamaged items are typically about 50% off. Damaged items are about 70% off, but some damage can be repaired for a couple bucks. Tip1: They only have a couple shopping carts, so bring your own cart or bag. Buy something from home depot and borrow a cart, maybe. Tip2: Starbucks across the street opens at 4:30AM on Saturday. Tip3: Don't buy used climbing shoes here. Go to the evolv factory outlet in buena park. They sell closeout brand new/factory second shoes for $25-45. For example, $120 Predator G2 or Talon G2 for $35 brand new, factory second shaman's for $45. read more

Disclaimer: I know someone who works here. REI is the Rolls Royce of outdoor shops. You don't need the stuff here or the prices. But it is the best you can get. You can get a thermal fleece jacket at Wal-mart for $21 ( I just checked). Or you can go to REI and spend $39 for the cheapest up to $185 for a North Face. If you're going to play in the snow for a day, don't pay the prices here. If you're going hiking in Utah in the middle of winter, come here to avoid dying of hypothermia. Yes, I bought a GPS here, hiking boots, various other doodads (and lots of socks for some reason). I haven't bought a jacket because I have several already. But I'm telling you if you want quality, come to REI. The people who work here use the equipment so the advice they give you is useful. On the other hand if you already know what you want why pay more? You can find Camelbak hydration backpacks for half the price at Wal-Mart and for $40 I become a Wal-Mart shopper. The bikes are a great selection, mainly mountain bikes as can be expected. I do buy shoes here, and I always get the Superfeet or other orthotics. The only other place to rival them for service and knowledge is A Snail's Pace but they specialize in running not hiking. REI also has good old fashioned maps. Make sure you get the all weather water proof ones. They also have classes and outings which no other sports store has (except the much smaller Adventure 16). If it wasn't for the prices REI would get 5 stars. read more

Of the REIs I've been to, most of them in the western U.S., this probably the worst for floor staff. It's obvious they haven't started filtering staff out after the initial hiring into the new store. The bike shop seems competent but the floor staff was less than helpful. We found the shoe dept reasonable but not overly knowledgeable about their products. Like many chain places, this ReI has settled for mediocre when it comes to service standards. We'll stick with other REI stores, online sales and other outfitters for now. read more

Went to big tent sale and spent time looking for a gift for my dad on Father's Day. Excited I found the perfect gift at a great price, then waited in the large line only to find out I could NOT buy the item. Why? Because you had to be a member! Not one person said anything about that prior, nor was there visible signage. Why no just join you ask? Because it cost money to be a member (and that would defeat the purpose of buying an item at a discounted rate)! Extremely misleading!!! And I was not able to buy my Fathers Day present. If you have a question about anything recreation related you must stop by REI. They are unbelievably helpful in a sincere way, not in a pushy you can tell they're trying to make a sale way. I came in with my girlfriend to pick up a bicycle and roof rack system and was approached as I was picking up my crossbars if I needed help. I did not believe I was going to need any but then he started telling me information about the product that I found very useful. He gave me options on different bike rack attachments and gave me the price differences so if I were on a budget I'd get the best for my buck. He also went searching for the rack while he was helping two others as well as building a bike in the back, boy was he multitasking, and at no point did it seem he was ignoring any of the customers. When he learned that we were also picking up a bike he also told us immediately he needed to calibrate all the brake lines and screws to make sure they are up to specification. CUSTOMER SERVICE! Need I say more? Some of their things are a little higher priced but they do have fantastic sales and for the customer service you get I believe the price is worth it. read more

I really like this place. The parking lot is huge and they have a good selection of outdoor gear with prices in-line with quality equipment. Just understand you need annual membership. Plus, they are knowledgeable. I was replacing a pair of Merrell hiking boots and even though I told them what size I needed, they measured and advised me to get a larger size. Poor bike shop service - I purchased a Cannondale bike here a few weeks ago. The salesperson was very polite and knowledgeable, however, when it came to servicing my bike, their service was subpar. Even at the shop when I tried the bike that I bought for the first time, the front and rear derailleurs constantly made clicking noise. I told this younger guy at the bike department and he said "yeah it makes noise because this bike uses cheap component." This guy was so condescending. So I asked him if the noise continues whether I could return the bike. This guy went on like "you can get tune up later". Ridiculous. I'm going to return this crappy $1K bike back to rei. read more

I got the America the Beautiful National Parks Pass for a friend and the gentleman (didn't get his name) at the front, explained the difference between this pass and the National Forest Pass. REI is my favorite store but I just can't understand why my wife hates something I like so much. Well really I know why. You can't just go to REI without spending $200. It's like Costco, you go in for chips you come out with two baskets. Same with REI. I go in for a new pair of mountain biking gloves and come out with new pants and a shirt too. Quality products and knowledgable staff. You buy from people that actually partake in the activities you do. They have first hand knowledge of what works and does not and the share that freely. What a ridiculous experience today came in today to purchase a child carrier backpack around $300 I had so many questions this time i really needed help. My wife and 2 kids where waiting for a good 30 mins for help. When finally the guy that was helping someone saw me and said I will be over as soon as I'm finished with him. Np we waited. Then another 15 mins when by 2 employees working the area now. I said I really need some help I have 2 kids that are not corporateing and I just want to know a few details so I can purchase and leave. He said just a few mins. Another 15 mins went by my wife and I said forget it let's go this is going to take way to long. As we put down our packs and started to walk away from the area as woman walked by said gi can I help you with anything. I said yes I'm wondering why if you have so much demand and 2 people working an area why don't you have a number system or something in place where I know I can get help instead of someone standing in front of the employees saying they are next?? She said that a good idea I'm sorry I can get someone over to help you. At this time I explained it's to late I've waited close to an hr already and have to leave told her my experience and said I'm sorry but I've found the same stuff on Amazon and that's for letting me look at your product my business will go there where it will be at my door in 2 days. I've come here to buy when you have sales that need attending to i suggest get someone to get the job done asap. I got the same product I wanted $20 cheaper and had no hassle. I'm so glad they decided to open up an REI here in Tustin. The location is really convenient. I haven't had any problems with the parking so far. The staff has been so helpful this past season as I have visited many times trying to get together my gear for snowboarding. They really are experts at what they do. Gavin helped me with my boot fitting and he really spent the time to fit the perfect match no matter how long it took. He was helpful, but not pushy and had good recommendations. I also had to take my board to the shop to have my bindings attached which they were so helpful with. I can't remember who I had here, but he was also really nice and informative. I think it's a little more pricey overall compared to other sporting goods shops, but the expertise and service that you are getting more than makes up for it. read more

I have always had great service here. I bought a bike rack for my car and the first has a broken part. No problem they exchanged it quickly. Tje staff is friendly and knowledgeable. What a great place. they truly have it all for the outdoors-person. The staff is always helpful and they have an outstanding customer service policy. Hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, if it is outdoor, they have it and in a quality product. It is pretty cool to talk to the staff here as most of them are enthusiasts in the products or sports that they represent. The store also has great classes on how to get associated with a new sports or activity as well - I have never attended one, but I have seen the flyers about special events and activities and they sound interesting. I was very happy when they moved the store from the Santa Ana location to the Tustin marketplace. I have found myself going more often just due to the easier location. read more

I had to get a couple things for my trip to Jackson Hole WY. They had a great selection. I finally decided to get the vibram five fingers shoe. REI by far has the best selection of them. The sales personnel were very educated on their shoes. They told me everything I needed to know about the shoe. Beware: they are a little pricey compared to other sporting stores. I just got back from REI. A friend gave me a mountain bike jersey that was to big, so I took my guest receipt and returned it for cash no questions asked. This place is a bull shit free company. You can return anything at any time. This means they stand behind their products. That's rare these days. So other than that they have about anything you would ever want for outdoors activity. I can spend hours just looking at everything. There is always a sale and you if you sign up for membership get back %10 on everything you buy. I got $4 off of the $12 bike tire gage I bought today. Excellent quality and service. Bought luggage as a gift for my niece. It was unique and cute, not like your generic cheap luggage. There was a smaller version and a larger version of the luggage. The larger one I wanted was missing handles and there wasn't another one available, so they took the handles from the smaller version and put it on the larger one. It looked like it fit fine, but I later found out the handles had come off. Because my sister didn't tell me right away about the handles, and she kept forgetting to give me the luggage when she came up from San Diego, I didn't bring it back to REI until almost 6 months later. I was embarrassed to show up so late with used luggage. I explained what happened and asked if they could just find the larger handles for it. I thought they were going to give me grief and maybe blow me off. Instead, about 5 minutes later, they just gave me a completely new piece of luggage with the correct handles. Didn't even have to fill out any forms. They just handled it quickly without any rolled eyes or attitude. Now that is an awesome way to treat your customer. Also, if you're a member, you get a % dividend on your purchases. It's pricey but if you want quality and service, this is the place to go. I can't say I shop here often, but it's definitely worth it for certain items. read more

After a terrible experience at Dick's sporting goods Newport Beach, I decided to go here. From the moment I walked in, I felt warm greetings. I was looking for waterproof hiking shoes and didn't know what to get because I've never own a pair. I am very pleased of the service. The shoe department was very helpful and patient with me. The cashiers were extremely nice and professional. The cashiers made sure the pair of shoes I bought match with the same size plus left and right shoes. I ended up leaving with two pairs of shoes! This place is HEAVEN! I can pick up an outdoor hobby or play more sports and will definitely get my supplies here!!!!!! read more

Everyone here is so unbelievably helpful and nice. I came to try on some hiking boots that I had planned on just buying on Amazon for slightly cheaper but ended up just buying them in the store solely because of the great customer service. I even joined the membership program. Everyone who walked past the shoe area stopped and asked which shoes I was enjoying most and asked where I was taking them and they were all genuinely excited for my trip and interested and wanting to help Wayne was wonderful over in the shoes. He spent a long time helping me out and brought me tons of different shoes before I chose the perfect pair for me. He went to great lengths to help me get the best pair and let me know that they could easily send a different size to a new destination on my trip if it was needed. He even showed me a different way to tie my boots in order to secure my heel down properly so I don't get blisters! read more
