When I picked up the bikes, the staff were all super nice and helpful with getting bike ready to go. They don't rush in getting all the paperwork done and made sure I was comfortable with the hike before I rode to back to my hotel. Highly recommended for any rentals and they have a lot of decently priced parts if you need to replace anything.

Every single time I bring my bike to the store, they do their best to at least diagnose the problem and give me a reasonable estimate of when I could expect to have my bike fixed up. They are incredibly transparent about everything they do, and every time they ring up the bill it comes up to be less than I expect. But it doesn't even end there! During the summer, they have a mobile truck that rides around the area to provide their repair services free of charge for the local community! While I was there, they told me about the group rides that meet every other Monday for free for beginners (something they did not need to inform me about) and I ended up joining for a group ride. The team here goes above and beyond to make sure the customers feel welcomed and informed.

Good God I spend a lot of time wandering this store. Anything outdoors related gear for camping, hiking, biking, etc and they have it, along with all the accessories that go with it and the proper bag to carry it in! The selection of bags is truly impressive. Two duffels large enough to carry bodies, a backpack camelback and a smaller camelback have survived many adventures over the last four years. So has all the bike gear I got on the clearance rack except the light jacket I shredded in a crash. It was a gnarly crash and thin material, other than that I consider their gear to be virtually indestructible. In fact 90% of our outdoor gear is from here. They soften the blow to our wallets by sending us a dividend check each year. Become a member and you can get a percentage back of your purchases too! Check their calendar for events and various outdoor classes. I haven't taken one yet but I keep meaning to! The staff is very knowledgable and will hook you up with the right gear for your needs. By now I think they just recognize us and let us wander around cleaning up the drool in our wake ready to answer questions if needed. I wish the prices were a touch lower but the sales are killer. Each week they have an energy bar and gel on sale. That's about the only time I find those items to be affordable. As a member of REI for over 40 years, it's heartbreaking to witness the steady decline of a company that once stood as the gold standard for outdoor adventure, education, and community. REI is no longer the organization envisioned by Mary and Lloyd Anderson. The spirit of cooperation, quality, and passion for the outdoors that defined REI for decades has been replaced with cost-cutting measures and subpar services that betray the trust and loyalty of its longtime members. Customer service has suffered dramatically, and one clear example is their use of OnTrack delivery service--an unreliable partner that consistently fails to deliver packages or provide accountability when things go wrong. This kind of decision reflects a troubling shift in priorities away from customer satisfaction and integrity. Perhaps most disappointing of all is the recent shutdown of the REI Adventures program. For decades, REI led the way in outdoor education and guided travel, offering transformative experiences that connected people to nature and to each other. Now, that legacy has been cast aside. REI once meant something. It stood for quality, community, and a shared love of the outdoors. Today, sadly, it feels like just another retailer chasing margins instead of meaning. I remember coming to Seattle as a kid and entering the wonderland of the REI Flagship Store, totally in awe of the grandeur of the place. A few years later, the varnish has dulled a bit. It's still a great place for selection and it's often the only outdoor store that's open late (when you've forgotten to pick up a snow picket for tomorrow's attempt on Rainier). But, to the point: while REI's returns policy is incredible (even overly generous) on new items, it's nonexistent on used items, even if you have a good reason. To be fair, the tag says as much, but sometimes you can't properly assess the condition of a piece of equipment in the store. I felt I got the short end of the stick when I purchased a sleeping pad that had a slow leak and REI basically said "Tough luck," even though the tag said it was returned because the previous owner "didn't like blowing it up." Bottom line: when buying from the REI garage sale, caveat emptor! If you're looking for good deals on used gear, there are much better places to shop. read more

Spent over 3 hours in the Seattle store, and after leaving frustrated by the lack of value and choices on the specific gear I was after, I had to spend $15 for parking!?!? ...I then went online to purchase an item via their app that wasn't in my size at the store, and the REI app didn't even have a field to enter the 20% coupon code before checkout, which was the whole reason I was there in the first place on this particular weekend... I wanna love REI, but obviously they've not bothered to work out the kinks in the way consumers want to buy.. Thanks for charging me $15 for nothing and making me realize how many better options there are for buying camping and rain gear. I will continue to shop at The Clymb, Mountain Hardware, Outdoor Research, Sierra Trading Company, and the many others that don't charge me $15 for parking and actually have fields in their apps which allow you to enter their coupon codes before checkout!!! Those of you who give REI your hard earned dollars really need to do some research!! read more

This store is so incredible. I can spend hours here!! I absolutely love anything that is done outdoors. I fish, hike, camp, rock climb, run, kayak, etc. Anyways, this post isn't about me... I always find what I am looking for here. The selection is enormous and the staff is so educated. They seem to know the answers to my questions and point me in the direction of what will work best for me. They pretty much have never failed me and i have never had to return anything. I hear that their return policy is very flexible too. My wife won't buy running shoes anywhere else and it is hard to get her to leave the store. This is my playground and I could pretty much live here. All of their goods are top quality and people with specific needs will find what they need. I really can't say enough about the great staff too. read more

I've been to several REI stores in California, but this one, as the flagship, is nothing like those. I really liked this store, but not because the building and grounds are impressive. To be sure, I enjoyed walking to the front doors through a small, if obviously artificial, park. No, the reason I liked this store was the selection and the service. I had a very good, informative discussion with a member of the bike shop. I got the feeling that he spent more time with me than other employees at other stores would have.The selection, although I didn't shop very much throughout the store, seemed very good. The store is huge, they have to fill it with something, right?I didn't even make it up to the top floor of the store.The used gear section seemed anemic, but I suppose that isn't something the store can control. read more

REI screens potential employees by using mandatory credit checks. This policy has bad economical dynamics, and it doesn't help to predict reliable employees. http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salmon/2011/09/26/cracking-down-on-job-candidate-credit-checks/ The link is to a short blog piece with a quote from testimony by a TransUnion lobbyist: "At this point we don't have any research to show any statistical correlation between what's in somebody's credit report and their job performance or their likelihood to commit fraud." Yes, REI has a very large variety of good sports gear, and their 222 Yale Ave. N, Seattle store is a very big, clean, and beautiful place. REI is a really awesome store to visit. You step inside and it gets you revved up for your next trip to wherever! They carry so much stuff my head explodes every time I come in, and usually the employees are friendly and helpful. My only gripes are that 1) it's crowded as HELL and 2) the prices are pretty steep. In fact, if I have something specific in mind I'll often shop online (unless I'm down for just going in for fun) and go in if I can only get it there. It's mean, but with places like Outdoor Emporium around the area (near Qwest Field) that sell for SO MUCH LESS when I'm dirt poor ya have to find the best deals you can. Please don't shop here. You have to pay for parking and pay to be a member, and the everything is still super expensive. You can get it all on Amazon for cheaper. It is in a very dirty neighborhood, so in your way there you will see lots of homeless and mentally unstable people. It is hard to get to by car, lots of left turns with no left signal and constant oncoming traffic. The parking lot is tight. It is mostly just clothes for the super rich. I think it makes the world a worse place by existing and being so exclusionary about nature. Of course the ceo and board of directors are all white, very little diversity. read more

REI only believes in profits. They Union bust, they have Wall Street bros running the joint, any soul REI had originally has all been lost. Another useless, detrimental company destroying the earth and putting profits over people. They call themselves a co op but yet when it's time for co op members to vote in elections, people who are "lifetime members" (their words) aren't eligible unless they buy buy buy. So eat crap you Wall Street, admin, and executive jokes, the working class will rise up and REI will fall. Pros: Tons of supplies which are extremely high quality. If you like sports a lot, they will almost always have a form of something you need. Cons: Not a lot of variety compared to a specialty store, although there is still a very acceptable number of options. Also, the gear is way over priced. REI has become like Cadillac. It's a name brand and hardly anything more. You can find the same grade equipment online for a similar price. Overall verdict: There is less expensive stuff out there that is just as good. But if you want exposure to a variety of gear, this is the place for it. read more

REI is great. Since moving here to Seattle, I have been getting more and more into outdoor recreation. The workers at REI are really helpful and real. I just bought a tent with my BF because they were having a sale. The worker was super helpful and I thought he was really honest about the pros and cons of different tents. It's a fun place to shop around. Except that I see too much that I want to buy! The only downsides are that sometimes the checkout line is really long and the parking garage isn't that great. Rob helped me with a return in customer service. It was slightly longer than the allowed return window (1 year) but he took care of me anyway. I'm a somewhat well-informed shopper and would say that I abide by the rules most of the time. Rob made for a completely hassle-free experience, even though I was outside the window of return opportunity. Horrible customer service. Wouldn't let me exchange a North Face vest purchased online for a different size without the original packing slip. Even providing them with a receipt on my phone. When asked why, they said that I could be scamming the system!! Rediculous... I was just trying to get a different size and not returning or asking for a refund! Entrance is hard to find, thought I saw a sign that both members and none members could shop; apparently not as when I got to register after waiting in a long confusing line (it had two entrances that merged later on by alternating). I drove a LONG way to shop here for my new bike, but it was worth it. I was able to spend 2+ hrs test driving bikes up and down the outdoor ramps. The fellow who helped me was great about getting it adjusted on the spot so I could take it with me. (And he never teased me for picking a pink one!)
