This was one of the best coffees that I had in the Seattle area. My fiancé got a caramel latte and I got a Cortado and both were perfect. This is such a cool and unique coffee house. They lean in on community and outdoors by offering classes for people to come and learn or to rent gear. It also has taps for beer! If I lived in the area, this would be my go to spot. Gearhouse is amazing. I stumbled onto the site while looking for gear rental. My friend was flying up from the Bay Area for a break, and we were looking to go on an overnight camping trip. He'd never backpacked before, and while I'd been a few times, I'd always gone with friends who had the gear and knew what they were doing. After hours of research on spring hikes, we chose a hard first hike, the Lakeshore Trail in Chelan. It trip was 17 miles with 3500ft elevation gain, which we we had to do as an overnight trip because of other commitments. When renting gear you have a few options. There are a number of online companies that will drop gear off at your house, but they never responded to my emails. I figure they don't really exist and their websites are phantoms. The real default in Seattle is REI. REI provides a great service, but the experience at Gearhouse is way better. REI only offers a la carte options, you have to cobble together a gear list and pick the right items. At Gearhouse, you don't have that labor. You have a conversation about the hike you are doing and some preferences about the items you want, and they pick out a full list for you. The gear they carry is better, on our trail we met a backpacker that regularly does 200+ mile trips, and she had the same ultralight gear we rented. For items they don't carry they'll provide recommendations for you to buy. It's a huge help. REI also requires you to clearly specify dates for pickup and drop-off and charges per day. Gearhouse has a six-day window for members. You can pick up gear a bit early when it's easy for you without worrying about a micro-cost for one extra day. And if you get back late or want to take an extra day on the hike, you don't have to worry about missing a drop-off. Also, each tent and sleeping combo is a bit different, so we literally set up the tent in the Gearhouse space before we left. When we got to our campground we had intense wind, and without that prep it would have been frustrating to get everything together on the spot. That's not something you get with most rental companies. Finally, remember the hours I spent planning a hike. Well, if I'd signed up to Gearhouse earlier, I would have saved that time. They're experts and they will sit and listen to what you want and help pick out the perfect hike. I know this review is effusive, but I'm being genuine. I recently traveled to Seattle for an extended stay. My travel itinerary included a wedding and high hopes for a good hike or two. Quite the extremes when trying to pack suitcases and travel bags! Just prior to my trip, my Seattle-based friend suggested some killer hiking and camping options to consider. This is an incredible place and I'm so happy it was recommended to me and my husband! We just started getting into XC skiing so we don't own the gear yet. We rented XC skis, poles, boots, sleeping bags, and a roof rack for 5 days and it was all covered under our monthly membership fee ($45/month). A friend of mine was visiting Seattle from Austin, TX and I really wanted to take him overnight hiking in the Cascade Mountains. I was planning on cobbling together some of my own car camping gear plus stuff borrowed from friends when I found out about Gearhouse. After I signed-up, I was able to book a Saturday morning appointment to pick up a COMPLETE set of gear for me and my friend from their SLU location. This included 100% of the stuff we needed, and was 10x lighter/better than the gear I owned. Gearhouse is located 2 blocks away from REI, so we were able to walk over there and grab consumables like freeze-dried meals, snacks, etc. After our overnight hiking trip to Snowgrass Flats and Goat Lake (high recommend) we schedule another appointment to drop-off the gear at Gearhouse, and that was it! Gearhouse made it so easy to do this that I imagine I'll go overnight hiking at least 3-4 times a year now. read more

I've had an awesome experience with Gearhouse - excellent gear, new friends, new trip ideas. I've found it most useful when I want to get outdoors with friends who are visiting Seattle, or are new to hiking/backpacking, and we need more gear. Having this membership means they don't have to buy, it's cheaper than renting, and it's a one stop shop vs seeing what I can borrow across a variety of friends. It's also been a cost effective way to test out a new sport without having to go all in (for me, trail running), and I like the positive environmental impact from sharing more and buying less. They have lots of different gear - summer, winter and in between. But aside from the gear, I've made new running friends and discovered new routes, which is probably the best past. A friend was here last month and we borrowed trail running vests and poles to run the enchantments. GearHouse threw in a bunch of handy safety stuff (emergency bivouac, first aid, blister kit, electrolyte tablets etc). They were super interested in my feedback on the gear and ended up changing what they stock based on my recommendation. More recently we went in to pickup some backpacking stuff (quilt, backpack, bearbin etc) and turns out you can pick up some of the nice-to-haves like instant coffee (that's actually good, not a Starbucks instant sachet). I'm a fairly seasoned adventurer, but there's always something more to learn and it's nice to have convenient access to the gear I need for each trip. We got a detailed explanation on everything that was included. They helped us pack our backs. They taught us how to set up the tent. They gave us tips, does & don's, and best practices. We honestly couldn't have been treated better. During the hike, we had no issues with the gear whatsoever. Everything worked well. The gear kept us safe, warm, cool, fed, ... The hikers we met on the trail complimented us on our gear. We saw many experienced hikers who had the same gear as us, which is always a good sign. The return was also effortless. I am completely new to backpacking & they are offering classes for learning how to properly backpack & how to plan the trip. They have a cool co-op program so if you wanted to try backpacking out without buying all the supplies, you can borrow the equipment from them. Highly recommend Gearhouse!! I recently started getting into mountaineering, and so renting gear from here has made it a lot more affordable! With their 6 days window for returns, it also makes going and getting back from a trip more relaxing since I can have some buffer on both sides versus paying day by day at other places and feeling rushed before or after an outdoor trip.
