My husband fell for the REI credit card offer. They told me twice at the counter that we get 15% back when we use the card (too good to be true) and then again on a visit 4 days later, the same guy clarified that when we received the Card, we would get %5 off the purchase that we could use pretty fast and that the other 10% applied later somehow. It's on the Capital One website or in the paperwork that came with the card; it never mentions this 15% or other mysteriously applied 10%. The guy was a manager. We'd better get our $100 bucks as promised for using the card. Not worth it, stick to better cards. read more

I had a pair of shoes that failed after 100 miles. Unfortunately I had to wear them another 100 miles to get to somewhere I could return them. For comparison, my last pair of shoes lasted over 1000 miles under the exact same conditions. But the manager, Guy, refused to listen. He also refused to give me a phone number where I could appeal his decision. He claimed that since the tread was worn down on the shoes, I had got the full life out of the shoe. It didn't make any difference to him that I had a photo of the shoe with a hole in it a week after I bought it, with plenty of tread left on it. The message was pretty clear that "if your gear fails in the woods, don't expect a refund unless it's in like-new condition" which is obviously incoherent. If Guy had listened to what I was saying, and come up with a good reason why the return shouldn't be accepted, it would be one thing. But it was really degrading to be treated like some kind of scammer and just be stonewalled. I guess I was supposed to call a helicopter to pick me up in the woods so I could return the shoes sooner? Doesn't make a lot of sense. And for a $160 pair of shoes it is really unacceptable from both Altra and REI. read more

I totally forgot to take any pictures inside the REI store! I guess I was so busy buying my snow boots. Finally I got around buying snow boots. Did my research and although I do like Sorel, I also thought they'd be a bit too heavy and not the best to drive with. The staff member at the shoe department helped me and gave me other options. I ended up buying a great pair of boots that are not only suitable for snow but also for rainy days. Found a great fleece jacket for $40, maybe not super cheap but definitely a good buy. I'm not sure why other reviews mentioned staff was not attentive or friendly; I found it a pleasant shopping experience and will definitely return. Needless to say REI has a great collection of whatever your outdoor heart might desire. Thumbs up! read more

Absolutely RUDE customer service...never again. We have been here a few times and both Alley pup and her no service dog friend chili were welcome in the store. Today we were looking for shoes...dog shoes. We were chased down by a store employee and asked if they were both service animals. Ask politely and quietly. Plenty of outdoor stores that sell dog products allow dogs. How are you to ensure you get the proper size if they can't come in? Ridiculous. Goodbye REI, you're overpriced anyways. read more

I have always enjoyed shopping at REI because of their quality products and great selection. Yesterday their customer service went above and beyond. We called looking for good snow shoeing trails in the valley and Kiera was so kind and gave us lots of options with wonderful directions and information on trails. What can I say about REI other than "I guess." Nothing particularly wrong about this place, but nothing particularly right either. Obviously a great place if you're the camping/hiking kind, but not much else going on if you're not. If you're a runner or a cyclist, then this place is pretty much useless. Their selection of running apparel is limited to one T-stand and a mix of just a few pieces each of Nike, Brooks, and North Face apparel. There's no reason any runner should go here instead of a local business such as Rogue Valley Runners -- particularly when REI's prices are higher. Their selection of running shoes is even smaller. And while their selection of mid-to-high end bicycles and accesories is pretty good for a chain store, their service is very much that of a chain store. It lacks the personal touch and attention to detail that a good local bike shop (and there are multiple here in the Medford area) would provide. That and the incessant pleas become REI members get real annoying. Basically, REI exists as either an Amazon showroom or as a place of last resort if you absolutely need a CO2 inflator or a GU or whatever right away and can't get to the local shop. read more

This is a brand new store to southern Oregon and they are building their fan base. Lots of locals who have been regulars of REI in other communities or online are excited to have it. It is not as big or as busy as my local REI in Boulder, but I was impressed anyway. Clearly the merchandise is selected for a different climate and different sports so they carry things my store does not even though they have less stock. I needed some bicycle tools/accessories for my hosts' bikes and I got what I needed. The exact model pump I wanted was not there and I did not have time to wait for an online order so I took a similar and acceptable model. This REI has a VERY LIMITED selection of goods and an even more scarce staff. It was so difficult for me to summon any help around this particular location!! I came from California to Oregon, basically for an overnight trip and my friend advised me to buy a pack from REI because there's no sales tax in Oregon. I went in and was looking for a particular size, in which one of the staff so kindly searched near and far for and despite the system saying there was 1 available, I didn't leave the store fruitful. #sadface Even though the selection is limited, I AM however thankful for the sales associate at the checkout that I pulled aside to help me get fitted. He really went above and beyond to try and find me that mystery pack. I love REI's customer service and it's strange to me that this store didn't have enough staff on hand to assist customers. read more

I bought a bike and had a small issue with it. I called and spoke with Ed in the bike center. He told me to bring it in. Ed was so awesome as he fixed the problem and also went over with me what he thought the problem was. Most bike mechanics that I have been to a lot of mechanics that always tend to put the blame on the customer as to why something happened. Ed was very patient, professional, and educated me on everything he was doing. Thanks Ed for all you did for me today as you, in my eyes went above and beyond. read more

I've been to this REI twice. I have been an REI member for many years and have been to REIs all up and down the west coast from San Diego to Seattle. My first time visiting this location was very pleasant with my furry adventure companion. We came in and bought a new harness. We love Ruffwear stuff and REI carries this. I noticed during my trip that my bud's neck was starting to bulge a bit in his "small" harness so upgraded my buddy to a bigger size of "medium" since he is on the cusp. The second time I went to this location, I was abruptly informed about the "service" dog policy on walking into the store. It caught me off guard, this has never happened at any REI location I have ever been to. There was also not any signage on the door or anywhere that mentioned this policy. I imagine because this location is located directly next to a Petco they get all types of levels of trained dogs but I do think if this location wants to promote this policy they should put up signage. I didn't buy anything even though I was able to stay because my dog does provide a service. I most likely will avoid this location in the future unfortunately since my companion is always with me. That vibe was off and sadly this is the closest REI in Oregon (aside from Eugene). Going to this store was something I started to look forward to on my drives between my hometown in Oregon and back to California but it's not worth it for the bad vibes. read more

Nearly all my gear comes from REI. Regardless of where I end up on the west coast, I enjoy exploring the outdoor genre of retail stores. Since REI is at the top of my list, I made it a point to visit (and spend) at the nearest location. The store is organized similarly to the California outlets and the employees are attentive and helpful. This store is great for what it is supposed to be: an expensive playground for people with expendable income who probably spend more time shopping than actually playing in the outdoors. They do have a great selection of high-end equipment. The staff is bright and knowledgeable and they actually use the equipment so they know what they're talking about. One of the locally-owned outdoor stores went out of business soon after this store opened, which I suspect is no coincidence. My number one complaint is that they have a very extensive collection of dog equipment and toys, but they won't let you bring your dog into the store even briefly just to try on a doggie backpack. read more

I am a little confused as to why the other reviews are so low. It's as if they decided to complain simply because an REI is an REI. I have had multiple helpful interactions with staff on gear, selection has been fine across snow/summer sports i enjoy, and I know what I am getting every time. It's an REI. Yes it is more expensive (but i doubt more than a local shop for the same gear...if the local shop can even get it) and yes they have policies on animals, etc. considering some people ate allergic to pet dander and it's partially a clothing store, this makes sense. If you've been to another REI, you know what this is like. read more

I am a fan of REI but not this particular one. I ordered something on-line. The day it was supposed to be available in store, I went to pick up. They told me the shipment had not arrived. I asked if I could get the same item from the store shelf - (but they only had the item in different color) - they said NO. I asked the sale person to notify me when the item arrived. From the time I walked up to register to pick up my item, to request the notification, I had to speak to 3 different sales persons. More than a week passed and they still had not notified me although the tracking showed it had reached the store just a day after I was there. So, I re-order the same item. Again, it showed on the website the item had reached the store but they never notified me. When I complained, they gave me some incoherent excuses. Never again. I will never use the pick-up-at-store option. They are not reliable and they do not care. read more

Today begins REI's long awaited grand opening. While it is still too early to tell how this store compares with other REI stores, the 50 or so people who camped overnight, packed out parking lot, and the couple hundred people waiting an hour before the store even opened its doors for the 1st time are good indicators of the excitement it has built. Garage sale day was stupid, their ticketing system wasn't a system at all it was just one dumb kid giving out tickets with times on them. He let some people early and some people right on time. Some groups were so big you couldn't even move in their garage. I'm sure its against capacity. read more

Poor service. Chacos broke 4 times in about a year and they decided thatvtheyvwouldntnreolace them anymore because it was "my fault" I've been a member over a decade. So then I asked if Olukai had a model that was vegan friendly meaning no leather that I could wear wet and the footwear guy said no. I immediately looked up the olukais I wanted on amazon and ordered them complete with paragraph about them being exactly what I was looking for . No thanks to the inept clerks! We recently had the wonderful experience at REI in Medford, from the first phone call inquiring if they carry Eagle Creek luggage, to the final stage where we picked up our special order. Daniel and his staff were friendly and he was very knowledgeable about Eagle Creek and the ability to special order for the colors we wanted. We drove up from CA and contacted Daniel, he immediately assisted us, was on the phone with Eagle Creek to verify information and placed our order in a very professional manner. While in the store we had the opportunity to visit a couple of other departments and each of the specialist in these departments gave us options and recommendations. Last night was the first time I had I ever been in an REI store and due to the experience I had, it will likely be my last. When I entered the store, I wasn't greeted by either of the two employees standing at the front registers, nor was I acknowledged by the staff member putting merchandise back in the section I was looking at. Because I had never been in the store before, I wasn't sure where the women's coats were and not once did any of the staff members who walked by me offer to help me. When I finally found the coats, I found the one I was looking for and went to the dressing room area to try it on in front of the mirror. While I was doing this, an older female employee came to the dressing room area, did not greet me or ask if I needed help, she actually didn't say a word to me, just stared at me. I said hello to her and just looked at me and didn't reply. She acted annoyed that I was there. Another customer came to the dressing room area and the employee immediately greeted her and asked if she needed help. It was at this point that I decided I would be purchasing this $300 jacket from somewhere else, a place that actually acts like they want my business and appreciates the fact that I am there to spend my money. On my way out, 2 more employees walked by me and did not acknowledge me once. I'm not sure if this store is just a fluke with rude employees or if I should expect this in all REI stores, but I don't intend to find out. I also will be letting my friends and family know that this is the type of "service" that they should expect from REI. read more

Its great to have a REI in southern oregon. they have had everything that ive needed so far and have a great staff. granted it dosnt have the masses of over flowing gear that a seattle or Bay Area REI will have but Medford is a smaller town and they dont have the demand that other cities do, and REI isnt a "bike shop" so dont expect to get everything you need for your bike there, there are plenty of great bike shops in Medford for that kind of thing. And lastly, REI isnt a "pet shop" so dont expect to bring your dog into the store. read more

I have never been to an REI before. I went to buy my wife a jacket. A woman helped me out with finding it and was nice and helpful, but then went on a pretty long talk of why I should become a member and how REI is special because it's not a corporation like Sportsman's warehouse. I listened politely and thanked her for her help. I went to buy the jacket and the cashier then starts giving me the same talk. I said I wasn't interested. She seemed offended that I wouldn't want to pay $20 to save $18 in the future. She continued to push. I continued to decline the offer. Still she continued to push. This went on for a short while. She gave the savings to some other people in line, which I'm fine with, but she began to lecture me about why I should become a member. This all takes place while I'm trying to give her $180! Just take the money and accept that I don't want to join your club. You'll never have to worry about seeing this non member in REI again since I will never be returning. read more
