Went in with absolutely no experience and a broken 15 year old RC car. The gentleman at the front asked if I needed help. I explained I wanted to get it running, didn't know much at all, and had a general idea of what I was looking for. He immediately jumped in to disassembling the car and explained everything I would need with a breakdown of price and a comparison of quality. He spent a very long time assisting me and even opened a fresh motor off the shelf just to test my car. He did not try to sell me anything I didn't need. In the end I left with a new car after adding everything up and realizing it was a better choice. I only interacted with the hobby side of the store, but the bike desk service seemed great from the probably 30-35 minutes I was in the store. I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

Even though this is called Cycles & Hobbies. the hobby department has completely alienated themselves from the bicy department. As if it's not their job to help "bike customers." The blonde "bicycle mechanic" doesn't know anything about bottom brackets. I asked for A bottom bracket, and told him what shell type and spindle diameter. He seemed confused, and made up an entirely fake Response Asking about the threads and saying "i didnt provide enough information." He asked if the Spanish bottom bracket has Spanish threads. Spanish bottom brackets are press fit, and Spanish threads are not a real thing. read more

Hands down the BEST bike shop in town. They have everything you need to keep your bicycle tuned and ready to ride. I picked up some bright lights for the darkness of daylights savings, got new tires for my Craigslist bicycle lol and they recommended and ordered some aqua socks (cold weather shoe covers for bicycle commuters), so when I went back I had a rack for the back installed (gotta get those groceries ya kno!), bought a cute bell for my bike and picked up the aqua socks. I'm SO happy with the customer service, I've learned so much from chatting with the guys at the store, specifically Marcus has been a huge help to me! He gave me some tips and helped me adjust my bike to my height properly and riding my bicycle has been a DREAM ever since. Seriously I commute 8 miles a day on my bike and I'm literally grinning the entire time. :D I'd HIGHLY recommend this shop to anyone! I always have had great service there and this most recent experience was the best yet. My favorite hobby shop in Jackson county even if it's the only one. Still the place has a great range of kits and supplies...and the extra large staff is eager to help even when they are not all on break. Special orders are no problem and usually arrive faster than on line unless you have an Amazon drone deliver it. Big proponent of supporting local businesses and am heartened that the owner will be enforcing a new dress code for the staff with matching uniforms. I believe he is consulting with Angus from AC/DC. Kidding aside this is a quality shop and no matter your interest you'll find something there to lighten your wallet. For a shop it's size you'll be amazed at the range of supplies and do-dads including most hobby brand paints and weathering accessories. Trains planes and automobiles in all sizes and shapes. My 11 year old son and I stopped in to check out the models and pick up some epoxy. We were immediately tracked and followed through our whole visit like we were expected to steal something. I noticed the hard staring and decided to warm things up with some simple epoxy questions, the guy behind the counter treated me like I was his enemy. We continued to look around until I couldn't take it any longer. My son was wearing a soccer jersey and soccer shorts, no pockets and no room to hide anything but that didn't stop this guy from following my son's every move. They have some very cool models and the prices seemed fair, I'd love to support a local shop like that but man, was that guy a jerk! I don't know why we were treated that way, so easy to just stay home and order online. Side note: the bicycle section was filled with happy conversation so maybe they're doing it right over there. read more

Great prices quality and cheap repair had lots of work done on my bike and they were always very helpful and had good recommendations.

I brought my bike in here to have it fixed. The 2 guys in the back were happy to help right away, which I'm not used to in bike shops. They worked on my bike immediately and were busy too. They took some time to kindly help other customers that needed just a couple minutes assistance, then got right back to my bike which was being a $%*@& and not making things easy. The final price was very reasonable. I FINALLY found a good bike shop in the valley that I would write a review for. I've been to most of them and not going to talk bad about any of them, but this is a gem. Also, the attachement to the hobby shop is just very cool..reminds me of when I had my Tamiya Frog and Futaba Attack. Just an all around great store. But I will say one thing they need...a model of an F4U Corsair hanging from the ceiling. They have dozens of planes and rockets hanging but I sadly did not see a Corsair. read more

I love fancy bikes. But on the flipside of that, I'm kinda stoked when I don't see dozens of $2,000 Cannondale/Trek/Specialized/whatever carbon fiber/sharksin/unicorn hoof specials on the racks. Nothing wrong with that stuff, but when you're a casual cyclist like me you appreciate that the staff isn't thinking LOOKIT THIS RUBE HE RIDES A WALMART SPECIAL whenever I come in. So, I took my Sports Authority special into Al's, and they worked on it, and it came back good as new. They did let me know that low-end components that come on bikes like that aren't going to perform like the magical Shimano Deore components or whatever. This I understood, but I did appreciate that it wasn't mentioned insultingly, just as an FYI. I'm just trying to get into riding a bike, not win multiple stages on the Tour de France. So if this is you, I recommend you pop into Al's. They won't treat you like an unwashed, mouth-breathing knuckle-dragger (of which, admittedly, there are many) just for having the gall to buy a new saddle for your $80 Magna. read more

Alright so, let's start with pricing. Everything is marked up 25-30% it's suggested retail price. That's pretty stupid. Now, the employees. There was two cool guys that used to work there now it's just this same cocky attitude unhelpful person. They never have anything you need. I let them true my wheel guess what? 35$ for nothing I had to true it the next day cause none of my spokes were tight my rim was flexing so much. Never letting them touch my bike. I can lace and true my own wheels I'm a local shredder and this bike shop is trash they should focus more on the cheesey little rc cars. read more

I just moved here from California and wanted to get my bike fixed so my brother found a place for me to take my bicycle, Al's Cycles so I went in and was greeted so friendly by Phillip he took a look at my bike and even took it out of the car for me, put it up on the rack and low and behold I only needed air so he checked everything else out and off I went. I have to say that Phillip is the sweetest young man ever also gave me a tip on who to call to get the grease out of my car from the brakes of my bike when I slid it in my Honda accord backseat........what a super guy. Shops like this just don't exist much these days, they just don't. I'm talking about exceptional customer service, knowledgeable staff, and a store that is truly geared towards people's passions. Welcome to Al's. We have purchased 4 bikes from Al's, and these guys know their stuff. This isn't your typical fancy bike shop with $3000 road bikes made from carbon fiber (nothing wrong with that....I like that sort of thing!), but rather, this is a family joint where you buy great bikes for the family, or even pro-level BMX for your aspiring racer. Overall, it's geared towards people who want to have fun and do it practically--they won't sell you anything you don't need. The store consists of both bicycles and numerous other hobby items like model rockets, drones, toy airplanes, and so forth! Fun place to pick up little items to make the kids thrilled! Support these guys...we all need to support stores like this and funnel our dollars into honest stores that employ local people...you can pay the same for a bike at Target and buy a bunch of junk....so consider staying local! I brought my bike in for a tune up as I recently moved to Medford and had the great idea of riding to work. Instead of a tune "up" I got a tune "down", literally. When I came back for the bike two days later my front shocks which use compressed air for rebound still had no air in them, my derailleur still skipped a few gears and were as dirty as the day I unpacked my bike from storage. And perhaps the most frustrating thing albeit the smallest thing, was that my presta valve caps especially made for this team bike of mine were missing and NO ONE in the shop knew where they could be. Instead I got a replacement used plastic pair that I could've pulled off a child's bike. I will never come back to this shop even if I had a gift card!!! Hopefully this is an isolated case. read more

I bought a bike rack the last time I went in and they didn't even charge me any extra to put it on(even though I got the 3rd one we tried). Also they are very knowledgable and seem happy to share their knowledge with you. Buying from your local hobby shop compared to buying from the internet is truly the best decision you can make. I bought a little quad copter from Al's after considering buying it from the net. There was a disclaimer on the box that I understood when I paid for it that stated that it was not returnable due to the obvious potential for damage by inexperienced flyers. The copter (in my humble opinion) had an issue with the electronics but it was sporadic and hard sometimes to duplicate. I took the unit to Al's 3 times for advice and they were extremely helpful each time trying to coach me with what, in their view, was what they believed were my errors. The last time, I left it with them to experiment with over a longer time period. The next day they called me and told me that I could pick up the unit and that is "fully functional". The didn't have to and I didn't expect them to but they replaced the little guy with a new copy and it now seems to do exactly what it is supposed to do with no issues. I've spent a fair bit at this shop, models, model rockets, rocket engines, bike parts, etc, but I'm probably not going back any time soon. I took my bike in for a new derailleur, and while the mechanic was knowledgeable and friendly, I have to say I took issue as he started writing down other things (cables, brake pads, etc). I let him talk me into a few items, but specifically said "no" to a new chain. It's my bike and I'm on a budget. Today I picked up the bike and all those nickel/dime charges, plus labor, added up to well over what we had originally discussed - including the chain I had said "no" to. I brought it up, obviously not happy about the bill, but the mechanic who had done the work had already left, and the guys on duty didn't seem to have a problem with my being charged for a chain plus labor that I didn't want. There was no apology, and no offer to adjust the bill. Al's is free to run their business however they like, but at the end of the day, I think the customer should be the one to decide which parts they want to buy and have installed. read more
