Their sales are fantastic. We were in for some running gear and backpacks and were approached numerous times by staff offering their expertise. No shortage of staff (especially during sales) nor expertise. As many others have mentioned, the $20 lifetime membership is well worth it. You will easily get back the membership cost in the form of rebates based on purchases you make. Having your purchases on record has proven to be beneficial, too. With the recent sale, I saw an Osprey backpack that I had purchased more than a month back at a cheaper price than I had bought it for. At the register, I inquired about whether or not I could get refunded the difference if I brought it in with tags in tact. I also mentioned that I understood if it wasn't possible given the amount of time that had passed. But without even needing to come in again with him to verify this, the associate pulled up my record and credited the difference to my credit card. Came in to take advantage of their sale and walked out with great items AND the difference on an item I purchased pre-sale without any expectation of it (or the item itself). I've been to this location a few times and leave annoyed each time. Checking out of here seems endless. There can be 50 people checking out or just one person standing in line and the wait time is pretty much the same...Long. I seriously don't understand how 30 (exaggerating but feels like it) employees are on the floor stocking, selling to customers, just walking around. but only one register is open. When I first moved to LA, I was looking for something like a 'Mountain Equipment Co-op' (MEC), all you Canadians know what I'm talking about ;) and I couldn't really find something that could be compared to it.... guess I didn't look hard enough cuz recently I came across REI and I felt like I had gone back home.... haha almost! It is smaller and less selection than MEC but for LA, I think it's wonderful and definitely a place to find your outdoorsy equipment and supplies. read more

I'm not particularly impressed with this REI. The staff was fine, but the store is rather small. In general, the REIs in Socal seem to be smaller than the ones in Norcal. I'd say this one was half as big as the Berkeley one. The one in Rancho Cucamonga is huge in comparison. But this one is within 2 miles of my girlfriend's place so it's really convenient. Sadly, the shoes and cycling gear areas are woefully small. read more

How could REI be any less than five stars? The only con was that it seemed to be a smaller store than others I've been to. Regardless I managed to find some maps of the Angeles NF and hooked up a pair of hiking boots more suited to the climate than my alpine style Asolos. Yes, REI is pricey but their customer service is absolutely amazing. We're going on a hike in Machu Picchu in a couple months and were in desperate need for a hiking backpack. Being a city gal, I knew nothing about nature and hiking and all that stuff but did my best to research some backpacks that I thought would be fitting (and cute of course!). I was walking around with two pack packs probably looking dazed and confused when JULIE stopped me and asked if I needed help. From there, Julie spent almost an hour with me and the bf talking about different backpacks, the pros and cons of each one, the main differences, and even fit us to see which size backpack would be best (who would have thought you needed to be correctly fitted?!). She also showed us how to correctly put on the backpack (again, who would have thought there was a certain way?!) and how to make sure the weight of our packs were resting on the hips and not shoulders. On top of that, she also stuffed our backpacks and put weights in it to get a feel of how heavy it would be and how it would look stuffed. She also suggested what to bring for our hike and what we can do to prepare. In the end, we ended up getting Osprey backpacks for our trek down the inca trail. I was so pleased and satisfied with the time Julie spent on us and the extensive knowledge she offered also. She also didn't try to pressure us to buy it right away (although we did anyway lol) and was so patient when we kept asking her questions. Thank you so much Julie!!!!! read more

The store was a total mess. Went to get 2 pairs of hiking boots and the selection was dismal. They had no clean socks to try shoes on. If I worked there I would've opened a pair for the customer and tried to sell 400.00 worth of shoes. Ended up leaving. Went to the orange County one and got the help and merchandise we needed. The whole point of REI is to pay more for excellent customer service and a superb return policy. This REI is lacking. The cashier was very nice and helpful though. Ended up buying some lights for the dogs collars at night. Won't go back to this one. read more

She even went the extra mile to analyze our feet shape and the motion of our step to find out which shoe would be best suited for me and my gf. Service is really going to hell at this store. I've noticed over the last year or so the customer service has deteriorated. Came in today to get a backback and asked someone a question. Before they answered me they kinda rolled their eyes and gave me an attitude. The guy was not friendly at all. Then when I was checking out, the employee was rushing, was not friendly, and screwed up my dividend purchase. Had to talk to a manager about how bad my experience was today. I'm questioning whether I should continue to shop REI. Stuff is more expensive than other stores and when you return something it's like the inquisition. Better shape up! read more

The merchandise and selection at this store are about what you'd expect at an REI. I come here because it's fairly close and parking isn't usually an issue. The floor REI staff members are generally helpful but some of the checkers have been obnoxious and downright unfriendly. Seems like the guys with the worst customer service attitudes are assigned to work the checkout. Hey management, pay attention! I have to update my review and give REI a full 5 stars. Becoming an REI member has been sooo worth it! Returns and exchanges are a breeze. As an example, I bought a cycling skort with capri knickers. I didn't wear them soon after purchase because the weather didn't warrant it. Well, when I finally wore them, a seam on the leg ripped on the first wear. Even though it had been way more than 30 days, exchanging the skort was simple. I didn't even need my receipt because it was in my REI member information. If you buy fitness gear, get the REI co-op membership! It's a one-time lifetime fee. It's worth it just as back-up lifetime warranty protection for your purchases. Granted, I wouldn't be a jerk and use it if my hiking shoes wore out with normal wear and tear, but I like knowing I have insurance in case any big purchases fall short of acceptable quality. read more

I love REI. I hate this store. I called ahead of time because my father was transferring me his dividends. They said it wouldn't be a problem. I asked a staff member at the start of the line (start of sale - really busy) the same question and he responded the same. After waiting in line for 20 minutes, the cashier said there was absolutely no way I could use it. Then the witch manager incited that I stole the dividends from my father. It made me furious. I will never come back here. Called the Rancho REI, they said it wasn't a problem and they helped me out right away. They said it wasn't a problem and it actually wasn't! Go there instead! My belt buckle broke on my pack and we were on our way to do a 6 day backpacking trip in Kings Canyon NF. We stopped at this REI to see if they could help me out and they provided the absolute highest quality of service like REI always does. They replaced my entire hip belt for free and attached it to my pack in a super timely fashion. The gentleman that assisted me was great, knowledgable, and relieved me of a lot of stress. I came here with my husband to get him new hiking boots and somehow we both ended up getting new boots and hats. Levi, an REI employee, helped us get fitted and was very knowledgeable in hiking footwear. From my experience, employees at REI are very knowledgeable and helpful. Products at REI can be pricey, but you are paying for great quality. There is plenty of parking in their lot. read more

just ran in to buy a tent and the tents were all stacked up. actually it was a little difficult to figure out what kind of order they were stacked in but being a good reader and being that all their tents have their names clearly on them it didn't prove to be too great a challenge. i also checked out their bathrooms of which 2 out of 3 were surprisingly unkempt. i thought that perhaps being an outdoor specialist they were trying to simulate a rest stop or typical camping ground, but there was flowing water and paper towels and stuff. although for a second it looks like you're stepping into the storage section of the warehouse or where they sort out the returns, but again, you figure it out. this place is okay by me. read more

Rei has no way of looking up pass purchases that need warranty unless you purchase there membership, beware, no ability to look up credit card purchases, they were so happy to boast about warranty at time of purchase but when you need help they are no no no, especially at the Arcadia store. read more

Where else can you go to really get all your outdoor rec gear? Although the regular prices seem a bit high (I got a bag for $45 in the store, the same bag on Amazon was $30). I have always had good experiences at REI. The staff are super knowledgeable and helpful. I get asked if I need any help multiple times each time I go, it's awesome. Usually I'm not "no I got it" but at REI it's like why not ask for help, you'll probably learn something. This last time that I went there I was looking for a new tent. I had been on their website and I new which one I wanted. I walked in the store and I was greeted by some girl, I forgot her name, I'll call her X. Anyway, X knew just the tent I was talking about and she got it for me. I asked her if I could pitch it and she said sure if I could find a good place. I looked at the other tents while she went to find me the footprint. When I asked her questions and she didn't know the answer she went to look in the tent guide for me or ask another person. it was awesome. They ended up not having the footprint for the exact tent but she got me two other footprints that were closer in size. My brother, dad, and I pitched the tent in the store. I had a few questions about the components and she helped me out on them. A few of the other sales associates came by to see the tent pitched too. They all said it was a good idea to pitch it before buying it and they said they wished other customers did that too. They taught us how to use the crack pipe (a wider pole piece that fits over the poles in the event of a crack for reinforcement. X even convinced me to get a membership and it's already paying off. After I got the tent I got a sleeping bag liner, some wool socks, and a hat. I found everything I was looking for (except the footprint). I think I'll even go back to their member's only sale. I love REI. People who say that the clothes at REI are ugly: they're supposed to be functional not cute People who say they couldn't find X sporting good: it's an outdoors store not a sporting good store. People who say it's overpriced: REI has an excellent return policy and there stuff is quality. You get what you pay for but if you're still dissatisfied take it back. I was happy with the customer service today. We were able to find a great backpack for boys scouts for $79.95 which was originally $150.00. I was super happy with the price and quality of the backpack. They helped us find things on our list and the check out line was pretty darn fast. I took off one star for normal pricing. I was checking out and stupidly decided to try it thinking it would fast track things it didn't give me a receipt, but it charged my bank account anyways. I wanted a receipt, but the associates have no way to get a receipt out for me. Talked to the manager, he was no help either. Do not try the MSA system. I came here on the weekend during their annual sale, and it was crazy crowded. They were out of the climbing harness I wanted but had the climbing shoes I was looking for. The guy working in the climbing section was really knowledgeable and helpful. In general, I'm really impressed with the quality of employees at all the REIs I've been to so far. The check out line was really long (because of the annual sale), but it moved fairly quickly considering. Parking was really easy as they have a big lot. read more

I have been an REI member for...well an eternity. My first purchase was for a backpacking trip to Europe and I have been a fan ever since. They have a very good online store that I use to determine if certain items are in stock. The in-store experience has uniformly been very positive. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. The quality of the merchandise is always very high. Note that you are paying more for better quality, but your purchases of regular priced items are counted towards an annual dividend that goes back to you in the form of a credit at REI. They have regular 30% off specials for single-items via USPS/email and they offer classes on an array of outdoors activities from learning how to ride a bicycle to rock climbing (though not in-store). read more

Gosh, I love REI! Their employees are really helpful, and not overly so which I appreciate. They're always roaming around the store so the second a camping tent starts confusing you, they're there. They currently have a 20% off one item special for REI members which is pretty good if you intend on making a large one item purchase. I'm actually excited to shop at REI in the near future but I have to start saving up because some of their gear is pricey. Great store if you are a fan of outdoors activities. They carry all the well-known brands but in addition they also have their own REI brands for almost all items. This is what makes this shop really interesting because the quality is definitely a match with all the big names but the price level is a lot lower. Great and friendly service by people who have real hands-on experience with the products. Membership cards cost 20 dollars for a lifetime membership but this entitles you to 10% discount in the form of an annual dividend and special discounts throughout the year. read more

I usually come here to carpool up to Baldy or Wilson and occasionally try to buy a few things, but their inventory never seems to be up to snuff with their other locations. I still think the Rancho Cucamonga location is the best, but the staff is definitely friendly and try to be helpful here, though they seemed understaffed the last time I was there. read more
