I have 3 REIs to choose from that are around where I live/work. Arcadia is the furthest to me. But, I choose to go here instead of the other stores because of the help and service I get there. Mr. Fitzpatrick "Fitz" has to be the best store manager I have ever met. He resolved an issue I had so fast and smooth, it was amazing. He actually cares for his customers. He put me in touch with Peter, for a backpack fitting, and I have never been so impressed with the knowledge of an employee. **if you are going to spend more than $200-$300 on a backpack, come to this store and ask for Peter to fit you. You won't be disappointed!** When we were paying, Victor helped as well to make the transaction smooth and, he too, was awesome. The cashier was having a little trouble with the transaction and Victor made sure it was done fast and done right. The service I got at this store needs to be recognized. This is a great store. The employees are very helpful and knowledgeable on the products (not so much the selection). You'll probably be approached by more than one employee asking if you need help or not. They know their products pretty well if you ask them questions or for recommendations. I was looking for something specific and they guy pointed me to one location and told me thats their entire selection only for me to find what I was looking for elsewhere. So they know their stuff, they just don't know where it is. The store itself is really clean and well organized. I love how friendly the employees are. I hadn't been here in years...not since I went on a Yosemite trip more than 4 years ago when I needed camping stuff like a zero degree sleeping bag and thermals. Went back a few days ago looking to purchase a beach cruiser bike, since it's so close to me and all. Store employees don't really greet you right away. It's kind of like one of those places where you find yourself standing around looking for someone available to help you out with something, but there's nobody around. HOWEVER! Once you get helped, it's all downhill. Friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable service. (But I'm specifically talking about that one guy that works the bicycle department, I forget his name) I couldn't be happier with the purchasing process...from all the questions that I needed answered, the test ride around the parking lot; alerting me of a discount I had on an old REI member account; the smooth, quick and friendly transaction at the register; and making sure I had all the materials I needed before I left! On a side note, I like their return policy on bicycles. I was explained that it's all open ended. If I decided to return it next week, I could. Or if I decided to return it in 5 years, I could. Weird. Well, it won't be happening because I AM DIGGIN' MY NEW BIKE! Should save me a lot of miles just for making stops around the neighborhood (like banks, convenience stores, etc.) read more

I'm one huge fan of REI. Yes, I admit that you have to be a little snob to shop here and to have a membership, but the store has so much cool stuff, that I don't really need! A recent trip to Yosemite had me coming to REI to stock up on some hiking gear. REI has everything you need for hiking, camping, yoga, etc. The store even carries outdoor gear for your dogs that occasionally goes on sale. Lifetime membership is $20. You earn back a certain percentage from each of your purchases which goes towards a rebate check you receive once a year. read more

Yay! My search for a Camelbak, BPA free water bottle was done when I visited REI. Sure, it was on the pricey side, but well worth it. I have to agree with the other reviews that they have a ton of outdoor items. I found a ton of camping gear and thick jackets. I didn't really see the normal sporting gear (tennis, golf, bball, football, etc.). I guess this is a place for the outdoorsy type. We also asked a staff member a question. He talked for several minutes and I stopped paying attention after a minute. I think he helped my friend though. read more

All REIs are amazing. The products are amazing. The return policy is amazing. And the customer service is uber amazing. I saw an item online that I needed for Hawaii, but I wasn't sure if I could get it shipped to me in time so I called this REI. They told me that the had the item, that there were 3 in stock, and that they would hold if for me for 3 days. I never even asked them to hold it for me. They kindly offered after asking me when I thought I could drop by. The whole process went super smoothly. The people were very friendly and super courteous. I've been a REI member for over 5 years, didn't bring this up, and still got amazing service. read more

There was a really good selection of sleeping bags, self inflating pads and with the help of the sales people there, I was able to put together a first time camping trip with nothing forgotten... Got there first thing this morning to buy shoes. I felt sorry for the young woman helping me because I tried on at least 10 pairs of shoes. I have really screwed up feet and buying online is no longer an option. Bought two pair because I felt guilty for the time she spent! Ended up with a pair of Sauconys and Merrells. I will definitely be back to this store. The only thing is it should be bigger. They should build up to a second floor and expand some of their departments especially the shoe department so they could have full lines of some shoe brands. REI is great, I don't know of anywhere else that has a 100% guaranteed return policy. The staff are knowledgeable and the selection is decent. While prices are a little higher than you can get elsewhere, it's a good place to buy stuff if you remotely think you may need to return something. Anything you return ends up being discounted heavily at the used gear sales, so everyone wins. Only bad thing about it are the long sales lines and the busy parking lot. Our go-to destination for camping and backpacking supplies. A bit pricey, but quality is good. The shop is well organized and offers a good selection. An excellent way to happily spend more than you intended to. I came here looking for a pair of cold weather gloves. Thankfully, I found a great pair on sale for $40, which used to be $55. After finding what I came for, I browsed the other sections of the store. They have clothing, camping gear, things for yoga, and a lot cool gadgets! However, please note that a lot of things here are pretty pricey. I do think that the quality of goods make it worth shopping here though. Jerry helped me & spent 30-40mins explaining the different sleeping bags & backpacking packs & all the features each had. I left very satisfied. This is why i enjoy coming to REI. I love this store for my outdoor needs. It's a very good quality stuff but kind of pricy side. Every two months they have members used gear sale which most of the items are 50 percent off . It's a very good deal! You have to be there early morning at 6 am to get a number so at 9 when they open the store you can be in the first group of people to go in and be able to find a useful stuff. They have pretty much everything you need for the outdoors; though, I would have liked to see a larger bike selection. They have great sales as well, especially if you become a member. I spend money here every time I go and I've even been to a few of their free clinics and used gear sales. The return policy is really good and their prices are about the same as most internet places. If you're used to shopping for outdoor gear at sport chalet or someplace like that then the prices will probably shock you I guess. The staff is either hot or cold. More than a few times I've been lectured by "veteran" staff for things which I already know. I usually just nod and try to act like I'm thankful. Once I took a broken tent pole to see if they could send it away for repair and the guy at the counter started lecturing me on how to compress the poles so I don't break it again, even after I told him that it broke because there were 20+mph winds at my campsite. But most of the time they are really helpful when I need something and they go out of their way to look for certain items. REI plays a good middle role in the outdoor sports department. If you're pretty serious about rock climbing-mountaineering-alpine routes, then this place probably won't serve your needs. But if you're idea of outdoor sports is car camping at the lake, it'll seem way too serious of a place. Like I said, a good middle. read more

If you need to be fit well for a backpack this is hands down the place to go in the Los Angeles area (though I like options and would love to know if anyone out there has found other spots that are remotely comparable). Because of proximity I tried two other REI locations first and wasted many hours. I have spine issues that make selecting a pack quite a nerve-racking experience. Selecting and fitting my new pack did take multiple attempts with different packs as well as multiple extended visits in REI. I'm now the happy owner of a new pack that served me well on a five-day trip. The REI Arcadia staff went above and beyond with both their patience and sharing their knowledge. read more

Hiking Selection was good for my kid, however my daughter and I were not even acknowledged by the girl I the shoe area. I arrived at 8:18pm and she was assisting one other person and I guess there was no service available for people of my my kind or atleast that is exactly what it felt like as a 3rd person came and she was greeted and acknowledged even though I was there trying shoes on with my daughter right in front of her face. I made my $$$ purchase thanks to the guy that helped me with the water pack for my daughter and the 2 is for ease of access literally as I helped myself around. 0 for customer service. read more

Their return policy is amazing... My husband bought hiking boots there last June, wore them for a 10-day hiking trip in July (where they gave him lots of blisters), didn't return (or use) them until the following March, and they gave him CASH in return for them! That definitely made us want to support their business in the future. Great job, REI! Oh, they also have a decent amount of outdoor gear - including items you'd never think to buy, but suddenly decide you need when you see them... like an ice cream maker for camping that you toss around in a ball until it creams. Stopped by REI last night to pick up a pair of climbing shoes and left with much more than I anticipated. Peter (an avid rock climber) helped me find the perfect pair and fit, while also giving me a ton of tips for a new climber. I love REI, in general, and love this location, in particular. I don't know if it's because it's near the mountains, but the staff seems to be particularly knowledgeable on all things outdoors. As someone who loves to camp, REI has been the source of most my gear. Last year I stocked up on a great sleeping bag and sleeping pad. Can't wait to use this May! Look out for their sales to get a good deal on quality products. Also, this is my go-to location because it is home to one "REI Jeff" who my friends and I always seek when we are there (or sometimes before we even go there, we call to see if he will be there) as he not only has info on the products in the store, but also great practical tidbits like "eat bacon when camping in cold weather for the slow burning fat" and the "dual purpose" of a bear canister. read more

Recently took in my bike to have it serviced and had a great experience, mike hooked me up with everything I needed and set me up to be a liferime member. No one takes care of you like REI. The prices aren't always the best, but like they say - you get what you pay for. The lifetime warranty is gone, but that's ok. They still give you a year to bring back anything you don't like, which is more than fair. And you can find some killer deals at their used scratch and dent sales. High quality gear and service worth paying for. The $20 lifetime membership is a no-brainer. read more

I was helped by an employee named Daniela and I can't remember the last time I received such good customer service. My aunt received 2 gift cards for having spent several hundred dollars there recently, and during her most recent trip to REI, she forgot to use them (there was a big sale that day and she got flustered by the crowd and long lines). I thought I would try bringing in her receipts and the gift cards to see if I could fix it for her. I walked in and was immediately greeted by a smiling and friendly employee named Daniela. I asked if she could help me and she immediately opened up a lane to sort out my problem. She listened to my story and was enthusiastic about trying to make the adjustment for my aunt. She called for a manager (also a nice gentleman, I didn't catch his name but he was efficient) and explained my situation to him, and he approved the adjustments. I was in and out of the store in 10 minutes, and I was so happy for the wonderful service I received. I will bring my future business to REI for years to come, because even if I could find a better price on Amazon, I wouldn't find that kind of service at an online store. Thank you, REI! read more

I came here to buy two carry on backpacks for myself and my husband and 4 Patagonia shirts. This was my probably only the second time in my adult life where I went into a sporting good store to buy something. So to say that I was a bit overwhelmed would be an understatement. But all the REI associates at the store were so helpful that I found everything I needed really quickly and effortlessly. Tiffany N. helped me find all the items I was looking for and helped me place an online order for the shirts that the store didn't carry and the smaller size of the women's backpack that I chose. A few weeks later when I received the bag that I ordered online, I took it back to the store to get help adjusting it to my back. As soon as I stepped in Ernest L. at the bike section offered to help me find someone who could help me. He guided me to the right area where I could test the bag out by placing weights in them. That's when I was introduced to Mark N.! Ok, where do I begin with Mark N.?? He was the best! He taught me how to best arrange my pack so that the weight would be distributed in a way that would put the least pressure on my upper back and lower back. He then taught me how to adjust the backpack to fit comfortably so that the pressure was mostly on my hips and not my back! He told me to walk around the store with the weights in the pack and see how it felt. He then went to help another customer while I walked around the store. I overheard Mark comment that due to that customer's curvature of the spine, he recommended a few different brands if backpacks that would be most comfortable for his spine shape. How impressive is that?? I wanted to know if he thought the pack I bought would fit the curvature of my spine too! So I went back to Mark and asked him for his opinion and he carefully explained to me why the pack I already bought would fit my spine fine. He was so knowledgeable and helpful! read more

Rodney is the best!! We were just minding our own business looking at trekking poles without a clue of what to look for when in comes REI worker Rodney who politely offered to explain to us what to look for when choosing. He really took his time and explained a lot to us. His explanation was very thorough and yet very practical for what we needed. I really appreciated it. A lot of retail workers (and I know since I used to work in retail) just give you the obliglatory 1-2 liner explanation just to get you off their back but Rodney did oh so much more. He cared. He could see on our faces the "deer in the headlights" look and would not simply let us go through life any longer without a proper lesson in trekking poles. We didn't go in looking to buy just yet but after the extraordinary service from Rodney, we both felt like we wanted to do something special for him, like buy poles. We debated a while but alas, our conservatism and frugalism won out and we did not rush into making any trekking pole purchases that day but we do know where to go in the future when we do decide to buy. Rodney is a saint. He gets my vote for employee of the year! #Rodney2016 P.S. All the other workers were helpful as well but not on Rodney's level. The store isn't the biggest REI but it's service like this that will keep me coming back. They have very tough standards for the manufacturers of the products they sell and make sure that all of their merchandise is responsibly and sustainably produced. So important to me.
