Definitely check this place out. It's nestled at the quaintest part of Washington Heights up the hill on Fort Washington. I always get the appetizer platter for food, which you can get with chicken, beef or veggie. It comes with tostadas, quesadillas and chimichangas and fills you up just enough. What's the best though are the margaritas. The jalapeño margarita is to die for but the frozen specialties such as the Frida Kahlo are also excellent. I often stick a corona in but that's not necessary. There's plenty enough flavor without it. Peruse the variety of selections. If you live in the neighborhood like I do, you'll be back and back again. read more

So disappointed. My friend orders from here a lot and recommended but because of the city shutdown we had to order for delivery. Despite being a couple blocks away it took an hour to deliver, fine, it takes time to cook food and probably light staffed. Food was cold and incorrect, missing a drink and entree. We called to give them a chance to correct it because duh, mistakes happen. I am writing this two entire hours later from asking for the food and drink to be delivered. Food and drink never showed. It was not until we called them asking where the food was that we were informed that our address for redelivery was written incorrectly (despite the previous person on the phone repeating it back to us correctly) so they hadn't delivered. They again offered to have it delivered which at this point it is 9pm, a little late for that so we ask to have that portion refunded and they said they will do that. Ten minutes later they call us back and say actually the manager isn't there and they can't refund it and offer a third time to deliver. Clearly they have the phone number so why couldn't they have just called to double check the address when they couldn't find our apartment for redelivery? This place is amazing. Go here for drinks and food all the time. Only reason I'm giving a 3 star and not a 5 is cause the last time we had ordered a chicken salad that was not good. The dressing was sour smelling and didn't taste fresh and the chicken tasted and smelled off. This was brought up to our waiter who is normally great but he really didn't show any concern in the matter. He took it back and did remove it off the bill however I feel the owner should be made aware of what comes out of his kitchen because that was a dish that could of possibly gotten someone sick. Ah yes, my go-to delivery place. I order via Seamless, and this place always gets me my food faster than the website says it does. I usually get the Chimichanga special because it comes with refried beans, chips, and rice. As I type that out, I'm realizing how much carbs that is, haha. Anyway, it's pretty good. The chimichanga is about the same size as a Chipotle burrito but fried. I end up splitting it up into two meals. I don't like the rice, plus they put peas in it, so I switch it out for MORE refried beans, which is fun. They're really good about accommodating that. I find the food really delicious. The fry on the burrito is very crispy, flaky honestly. It's super heavy, and I get really sleep afterward. My only gripe is that it's kind of expensive. The chimichanga special plus a Jarrito and tip came out to over $20. I guess that since it'll be two meals, it's not terrible, but wow, that just feels like lower Manhattan prices I guess. read more

It has been my favorite place for years but unfortunately the last two times that I've been there have been disappointing. Their frozen margaritas now have a weird after taste. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Washington heights besides Rincon Mexicano. I honestly never actually sat down and ate at Refried Beans,but I always order take out from here. Whenever I order from here I usually order the chicken nachos, or seafood soup with rice. The prices on the food is average. I definitely plan on checking out this restaurant in person, their food is always on point. Very tasty, and delicious. I usually order between the hours of 3-5pm. To be honest, this place does not deserve a star at all. This review would have been left with UberEats, but nothing annoys me more when I hear a hostess repeat my order over the phone, but the manager yell in the background that he never got my order. Let me just point that the hostess expressed that she recalled my order so I found it baffling that the manager could just not be honest that he forgot to place my order from 9:30pm and I had to call at 11pm to hear they had closed. While living in Washington Heights, a roommate of mine introduced me to Refried Beans, as one of his favorite (probably only, to be honest) places to order delivery from. While it is a tad on the more expensive side compared to other places, it has never been one to disappoint. My roommate was not one for roaming around the neighborhood for some reason, but while walking one day I passed by the restaurant and saw it was decently packed, and had some outside seating, to boot. From that point, I vowed that I would get someone to dine in with me, and see how it compared to delivery (btw, no complaints about delivery at all, but food generally is better at the restaurant!). My husband and I stopped in earlier this month before moving to Queens, and thankfully we got to stop in around 1pmish on a Saturday and it wasn't super busy yet, so we got seated instantly. Their alcoholic drinks are rather tasty. I ordered a blood orange margarita, and a frozen margarita. My husband was pretty happy with his Mojito and Corona. The burritos are rather large, and most people will likely have left overs for later, unless you're ravenous (which they are so damn tasty, you might be!). I highly recommend them. The service was excellent and attentive. We had our water refilled without asking, checked on our food, and they made sure we were content. POSSIBLY THE WORST MEXICAN RESTAURANT IN THE CITY Be prepared for hours of heartburn after you eat there. Really, no kidding. We ordered the chicken mole and the vegetarian chimichanga, both were prepared in the worst possible way and both tasted horrible; basically inedible. The vegetarian chimichanga was a thick mound of over-fried dough that I could not even cut into and all it contained were a few pieces of pepper, no other vegetables. The chicken mole was a leathery piece of over-cooked chicken, so spicy hot, it barely could be eaten. I am no stranger to Mexican food, and really do enjoy it when cooked properly, but this was all wrong and showed a total lack of how Mexican food should really be prepared and taste. Anyway, we brought all this to the attention of the waitress and she said the manager would come to the table to rectify any problem. No such luck - she ignored us completely, even when we passed by her leaving the restaurant, as if to say " I don't really want to deal with it." This kind of attitude speaks poorly of any establishment, but especially one that relies on repeated local neighborhood support, like myself (albeit no longer, sorry to say). I don't like giving poor reviews like this because I know it can adversely affect business, but this place needs to do better. A lot better. P.S. the only good thing I can say about this place is that it served good guacamole, but here again, there was an issue. The menu shows a order of guacamole for $4.50, which we thought we were getting, but in the end what we got cost almost $10 (obviously, a different dish, but this was not conveyed to us by our waiter). read more

I've been to Refried Beans in person last year and had a great time but this review is focused more on how they're doing delivery during this COVID crisis. I ordered through Orderfood.google, Google's order service. I ordered fajitas de tierra y mar (shrimp and steak fajitas), salmon Veracruz, and 32 oz of frozen margarita on a Tuesday evening. My phone notification told me the order would take 15-20 mins and when I arrived at the restaurant, it was all there waiting for me. No extra waiting necessary. When we got back home, everything was still nice and warm. The portions were generous and I had leftovers for the next day. Fajitas were delicious and my mom enjoyed her salmon. The sides were great--my fajitas came with a side of flour tortillas, the refried beans were creamy, the guacamole was tasty, rice was seasoned well, and we also got small containers of crema and salsa as well as a little baggie of tortilla chips. The frozen margaritas were strong in the best way and it made me wish that I had dined in more often, so I could have enjoyed more margaritas in the restaurant. I'm looking forward to dining in again when COVID is over and I hope they'll still be in business. read more

Absolutely perfect tostadas. Best of my life. Artistically constructed--tortilla perfectly fried, ratio so exact, a stabilizing foundation of refried beans thoughtfully layered, not too much on top, everything with a purpose. You could eat most of it by hand and every bite was perfect. I'll go back for this. But the worst salsa I've ever eaten. It was 99.999999% roughly chopped onion with trace elements of other ingredients. Maybe this is a business strategy to make your salsa terrible, so that people don't fill up on it--I don't know. Don't even take a bite, just ask for the tostadas. But, please, someone who is prepping at Refried Beans, just Google "salsa." This person has clearly never seen or heard of salsa. I finally took advantage of my winning bid from the Leukemia Date Auction with the lovely Jean P. I was quite excited about this, maybe even slightly nervous at first, as I couldn't wait to see her. note: if you are meeting a date here, get here a few minutes early, and go right around the corner to Frank's Market and get that girl some flowers, nahmean? they have a small selection, ranging from roses to asiatic lilies to mums, etc. plenty for you to pick from to create just the right amount of awkward when she arrives. So Jean arrives (absolutely gorgeous,) I create a bit of floral awkwardidity, and then we go in and get a table in the back. I'm glad we were able to get a table back there because, although the tables are tiny, it wasn't nearly as loud as the front section of the restaurant. Jeanie-Jean gets the pomegranate margarita, I the Long Island Iced Tea. This is my drink, and it's either horrible or awesome. I tip my hat to TaCo...I mean Refried Beans for knowing how to make an excellent LIIT. Perfect. By the time my (awesome) ceviche appetizer arrived, half the LIIT was gone, along with any anxiety. So the main course - she gets the steak enchilada, which I thought was quite good (she made me eat half of it, I swear.) I'm not a huge fan of steak, but that was some pretty tasty and juicy meat in that tortilla. I got the Mexican linguini special, which was done with a spicy red sauce, with tomatoes and peppers and chicken. Quite tasty as well. She didn't want dessert, but I wanted flan. I had to have me some flan! So I ordered flan. The flan was quite flavorful, but a bit "mushy" for Jean's taste; and really, can you blame a girl for wanting some firmness with her flan? I could see her point, but I still thought it was pretty damn good. Or maybe I was caught up in how the rich, sweet caramel was so reminiscent of Jean Gorgeous herself... I'm being a bit generous with these three stars. Bordering on four years of living in this neighborhood, and I namely avoided this restaurant for two reasons: 1.) I heard it wasn't great when it was T.A. Cocina back in 2010. 2.) THE NAME! Ooooh, the name! Eating at a place called Refried Beans does not appeal to me. While tasty, just the image of a pile of hot brown mushy beans that is conjured up...I just don't know... Well, something spurred me to mention it last night as an option for dinner, so off the beau and I went. The small space is tight yet colorful and animated. We snagged a table for two along the side near the rear. Service was friendly yet a tad sporadic. We got our water, chips, and salsa promptly filled and subsequently refilled. It was a good 15 minutes before our orders were taken, though. I'd call the chips and salsa and our respective drinks the better part of our meal, for better or worse. Adam's piña colada was the perfect blend of rum, pineapple, and coconut. It was creamy and not overly icy / slushy as some tend to be. My margarita did not skimp on the tequila. Oy. That really constituted my use of the phrase "for better or worse"; better because I needed to unwind, worse because it was a rough walk home afterwards. Ha! The empanadas were good; the cheese seemed bit processed, almost as if it was filled with American cheese, though in not complaining; the steak one we ordered was also good, though it tasted like chicken..because they gave us chicken instead. Oops. We each got enchiladas: I got Suizas, he got plain ol' cheese. Each plate was much smaller than I had anticipated, with two enchilada wrapped in a small corn tortilla, served with rice and refried beans. My enchiladas were so spicy, I could not finish. In fact, Adam switched plates with me. (Yes, he's in contention for the World's Best Boyfriend Ever Award.) And his...in a red sauce...were still too spicy! The menu did not indicate they'd be spicy dishes. Those that know me know I'm adverse to anything spicy, though most green sauces with Suizas I can handle; I order this at many Mexican restaurants. I'm not a person ignorant to the fact that some of these dishes have heat. It just bowled me over. I was miserable. The rice and beans did little to cool my mouth down. Even Adam, a spice enthusiast on quite the opposite end of the spectrum as me, was a bit overheated by meal's end. The food did absolutely nothing to win me over, which was too bad. I merely did not enjoy what I ate. I'd say it's me, not so much them. Adam was happy with his meal, so that's good. If / when I ever come back here, I'd be more than happy (quite willing, actually) to get drinks and chips, perhaps a benign appetizer that I know can't be spicy (cheese quesadilla, perhaps), but a meal? I'll be fine eating elsewhere. I wouldn't discourage you all from eating there, however. The irony: the refried beans were the best thing I ate. read more

Popped in here for lunch with my boyfriend on a whim and wasn't too impressed. We were drawn in by the pleasing aesthetics of the place, but neither the wait staff or the food measured up. Our waiter was brusque and had a look on his face like, "I have a million better things to do than serve you guys food". The place had just opened and we were the only customers, so I honestly felt like I was ruining his afternoon! I ended up ordering the Nachos Supreme. When they were delivered to the table I started munching away, and was delighted to discover that they were quite good...until I munched my way past the top layer. Gah! The restaurant had committed my #1 Mexican food pet peeve! They'd failed to layer! Any good Mexican restaurant knows that you can't just put a whole heap of chips on the plate and only put toppings on the outside! You have to layer! Suffice it to say that once I'd gotten past the top layer, all I had left was a rather sizable heap of naked corn tortilla chips, and the very little bit of cheese that remained wasn't even melted. I ordered delivery for the first time today... The Taquitos Rancheros Lunch Special served with rice and beans. Well, it came without rice and beans. I contacted Grubhub who told me the restaurant said the dish no longer comes with rice and beans, and apologizes that they haven't updated the menu. Well, that's all fine and well, but you still owe me rice and beans, because that's what I ordered.Grubhub said they refused to honor their description. So there I was, with two taquitos and nothing to go with them. I had to appeal to a manager at Grubhub and asked that my rice and beans be delivered per the description, or I wanted a full refund. After the second attempt of Grubhub negotiating with Refried Beans, they finally agreed and sent me the rice and beans, which came about an hour after the original delivery. After I heated everything up it was pretty damn good, but it took all of my persuasive consumer rights knowledge and application tactics to get the full meal together! As a new local neighborhood resident, I wanted to like this place, but after two visits, I can't recommend this restaurant to anyone. I had ordered a chicken quesadilla during my first visit and it was awful. The beans, rice and chicken all tasted the same. I figured maybe I'd return and try their taco salad lunch special. It tasted worse than the quesadilla. Flaky taco shell, and again, no real flavor to the food. I have good taste buds, too. The customer service / wait staff is not good either. Never returned after delivering food to ask if my food tasted ok nor offered any refills on drink. I had to get up from the table and go to the bar and ask for my check. Some rude woman took my credit card, gave me a receipt and turned away. Never said "thank you". You've lost a customer today, Refried Beans. My best recommendation for those wanting to try this place would be to look elsewhere. read more

This place is okay.. I went there once and my sister ordered a salad and it came w/ a dead fly..Disgusting!! The waiter said that it came from outside b/c the kitchen's window was open.....! Really? Solid 3.5 stars. Came here for lunch prior to an afternoon in the cloisters, which is a short walk away. Lunch menu was VERY reasonable and the portions were generous. Food was good and decently flavored, but I've definitely had better Mexican fare elsewhere. Service was good, and the restaurant itself was appropriately decorated and even has an outdoor seating patio that is open during the summer months.
