They often serve dried up meat or stale chips, and after Best Farm Mex closed, I was without a Mexican restaurant until I discovered Mi Ranchito. None of the right ingredients of a well put burrito. It was eh. The 'complimentary' chips were not so complimenting for our taste buds. They were stale and sit out under a tiny station. Excellent service and friendly staff... CLUMSY MANAGEMENT. As a disclaimer Mexican cuisine is hard to be terribly original with. So if you frequent too many Mexican joints in a row, it starts to get a little redundant. Its like expecting one Chinese takeout place to produce better food than its neighbor. What do you expect. So this is my 2nd Mexican place in 3 days and so... my tongue is in a 'meh' mood. Clock times were quite reasonable. I'm not going to give that grade on this review because I forgot to hit the button when the food came out and so I don't remember how long it took for plate service. It didn't take long. Maybe 10 minutes. The Mexican dishes just like with many latin/caribbean cuisine comes on multiple plates and has a lot of moving parts. Take this fork and take a glop of this and use this spoon and put it over there on that tortilla and fold it up with this salad over here... look - not today. I just sat and at each item exactly as it was and it apparently threw off the waitress who came over and told me that I was doing it wrong. I maybe wasn't in the mood for that today, either. All tasty ingredients and the beef was just the right limit of spicy without going overboard. You can tell the four slices of jalapeno contributed to the heat. But again it was nowhere close to being too much. My problem came when the waitress told me that she couldn't charge my card without there being a minimum $15 order. I didn't find it terribly odd except for the fact that this limitation isn't advertised anywhere in the store. Not in its printed menus; no signs around the establishment. No signs on the tables in those little plastic frames that restaurants normally use to advertise promos. They just leave it to the waitress to tell the customer. I offered to add $2 as a tip (my ticket came to $13) and she said that she could not do that either... without the order being at least $15 the cashier computer literally would not put the purchase through. Well now we're at an impasse because guess what. I don't have enough on-hand cash to cover and so I'm basically stealing service. She offered me the chance to go to the bodega a couple of doors down to draw cash but this is the thing... she doesn't know me! She has no idea as to whether or not I'm going to go and get cash AND COME BACK, or ditch the place! The other faux pas that isn't unique to this restaurant is that they have both musical and televised entertainment going at the same time. When the digital jukebox is playing, you have to basically watch a TV you can't hear. Would I ever go back? Absolutely. I want to try their smaller menu items. But their owners are absolute morons. And I get the impression that $15 limit is going to stay in place forever regardless as to how many people complain. I mean come on. People being sent to actually LEAVE the restaurant to go and pull cash? I wonder how many theft-of-service calls they've had to make to the police thus far...(and still have learned absolutely nothing from it). read more

Oh, this place takes me back to my high school days... I was introduced to this place around 4 years ago by a friend, and it has been my go-to place in Washington Heights ever since. I was born and raised in the heights, so every time I come home from college, I almost always have to stop by here. I always order the nachos with chicken and refried beans. I LOVE the sour cream here. I almost empty out the bottle every time, haha. But the best part about this place are the FREE nacho appetizers! I've been coming here for a long time and I always order the nachos and get served by the same people. I live in the neighborhood and decided to get take out from here on a Saturday night. The place itself is small but cute. It was not very crowded, with places to sit both at the bar and at the tables. While the atmosphere was good, unfortunately the food was not. I ordered the vegetable quesadilla, guac and chips, and a strawberry smoothie. My friend ordered tacos and a drink also. Everything was reasonably priced, with our total for everything being around $27. The quesadilla was just pretty gross tasting. It was really dry, with melted cheese inside and shaken cheese on top. The melted cheese inside tasted kind of stale and was in clumps together. It was a short walk back to the apartment so I don't think it spoiled during the trip. It is a little hard to mess up a basic quesadilla, but this place succeeded. I also did not care for the guac, which had a really creamy consistency and appeared to have no chunks of actual avocado in it. I am not sure if the guac is homemade but the taste reminded me of the cheap store-bought kind. My friend did not care for his tacos either, and will opt for the taco truck instead next time. I gave this place 2 stars because the staff was friendly and the atmosphere seemed nice. I would maybe come back to try some drinks. I ran into this place last week while looking for a place to eat before my road-test. Having lived in this area (Washington Heights) for a year, I left this neighborhood thinking it was a black-hole for good food (outside Dominican food of course).So I went in this restaurant without expectations. Once entering I was greeted by a nice, smiling waitress. Still at this point, I was just alright, lets see. I proceeded to seat at the table of my choice and started to read the menu. The pictures of food look great, but what caught my attention was the Bistec a la Mexicana. This steak dish is my favorite dish when made properly, and though with doubts, I ordered anyway. A few minutes later, to my surprise, the food came out looking just like in the picture! My plate came with REAL fresh corn tortillas, salad with avocado, yellow rice and black beans, and sliced jalapenos sautée into the steak sauce like it should be. I was so exited. Right on my first bite I thought this place was great, and immediately thought I should bring my husband here. And so I did. I took my husband here today. He had the Mojarra frita and I had the bistec a la Mexicana. Again, the food was great! Although this is no longer my neighborhood, I look forward to coming back. I hope this place don't change; and I hope the rest of the dishes are just as good as my first one. read more

I only order tacos and beers from this place and have nothing bad to say. At just a few blocks north of the 1 train's 181 street stop, I frequently indulge in here after I get off from work (1 or 2am) and they are good even late night. Upstairs they've got a bar and a half for seating, about 5 tables, and then a downstairs area with another 5 tables for dining. The waitresses are all nice and accommodating and even with a full house the food comes out in a relatively quick manner. I get my tacos solely with onions and cilantro but there's always 1/8 a lime wedge to drizzle on mixed with sour cream, guacamole in a bottle, salsa de rojo o verde - perfecto! Highly recommended for those seeking to venture uptown for some great Mexican food - both lunch and dinner this place has never let me down. Oh and the cervezas are always mucho frio. The waitresses are all very nice and accommodating and even with a full house the food comes out in a relatively quick manner. Karaoke in Spanish happens sporadically, gangsters and families mingle together, happiness exudes beyond the mindless drunks who trickle in... Its a lovely uptown establishment and I am proud to say that I am and will continue to be a regular. read more

First off, I'm a little shocked that no one has written a review in the past two years they've been open, but what the hell. I've been craving their food ever since I lived around the corner , and here's why. For about five bucks, you can get a full tray of homemade tortilla chips along with their amazing pico de gallo. They'll make it how you like it (picante o no), and it is ALWAYS fresh. I have never had a bad experience with it. I've had a few items from their menu beyond that (the tacos are very good, but not excellent), so order from their specialty side. I think it's listed under "Mexican Pates". Between that and the rotating soups, you can't go wrong. Oh, and if you go on a Saturday night, be prepared to be patted down by a security guard (he was quite nice), and see a bunch of drunk people having a good time. You could be the next one! read more
