    OrejA, tripa, and lengua tacos
    Jing K.

Sad, 20 years ago this place was probably one of the best authentic taco spots in the city. They're still good but not what it used to be. The quality just seems off, meat seems a little drier.

I was recommended this spot by family and it did not miss! I was quite full when I got to this spot but was craving Birria so that was all I had ordered. I plan on visiting again so I can try out other items as well, especially their Al Pastor! This spot has a whole spit on the side and it looked delicious. The Birria tacos were pretty good in my opinion but I did think the consommé was just a bit blander than other consommés I've had before. I still really enjoyed how full of meat the tacos were and the tortillas were nicely toasted as well. The space itself is quite small, but there is a small section where you can stand and eat if you don't want to wait or take it to go. This spot is a favorite for many in the neighborhood so I've heard and the number of customers who kept coming in definitely proved that!

As a Californian transplant, I was surprised to find this pretty legit taco place in NYC!! They have a big menu and lots of meat options for your tacos. The al pastor was well marinated and well seasoned. With the salsa and pineapple, it was well executed with the fluffy, warm flour tortillas. The tripa was very another highlight! Had the right amount of chew, char, and spice!! The lengua fell a little short of expectations. It wasn't as tender as other lengua I've had. Without additional salsa or other seasoning inherently, the gaminess of the lengua pieces was much more amplified. Shoutout to their special sauces because it definitely added to the tacos!! My favorite was the tatemade rosa because of its smokey profile with little chili chunks inside. I enjoyed the poblano as well! The store itself is long and narrow, with some standing counter top. Space was clean and staff were super friendly!

Taco Mix's tasty Quesadilla de Maiz with Carnitas (braised pork) and Mostaza Chipotle Sauce
    Mike R.

Have enjoyed Taco Mix on E. 116th! There are a number of different options not found in other of my nearby Mexican places, including some less common delicious proteins (read on). First time had received a menu and decided to check out Taco Mix. Ordered two different quesadillas. One was a Quesadilla de Maiz - a "traditional Mexican style" corn tortilla, filled with Carnitas braised pork, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and cotija cheese. The other was a Birria Quesadilla, another corn tortilla filled with red stew beef, mozzarella cheese, cilantro and onion. For the Quesadilla de Maiz I chose their sweet Mostaza Chipotle sauce, while for the Birria I selected the mildly spicy Verde Aguacate (Avocado) salsa. (Note - If you want consomé with your Birria Quesadilla, it's an extra $3.) While I'm more familiar with quesadillas that are basically fillings with cheese pressed between two tortillas, Taco Mix's were different like I envision street food, like their online photos. Their Quesadillas appeared more like a sizable well-stuffed soft shell taco (see pics). Note - Oddly, the green Verde Aguacate salsa came in a sealed clear pouch. Both Taco Mix Quesadillas were delicious, with the Maiz flavorful and mild and Birria was more spiced and robust. Although I didn't opt for the upcharged consomé with my Birria, don't believe I missed out on this selection considering it would have been hard to dip their style quesadilla. Second, if you haven't tried it before, (don't be squeamish,) check out tongue (Lengua) options. For those unfamiliar, tongue, cooked like this, is a tender, moist piece of beef that tastes like other cuts of beef without any off taste, such as with other organ meats. (My first experience enjoying tongue was cooked by my Russian classmate's mom.) On my next trip, ordered tongue for the protein in my Burrito Bowl, again with the Mostaza Chipotle sauce. While there's a small uncharge compared to other proteins, it's a very good choice! Hope to explore more of Taco Mix's selection next time, however will return to the quesadilla and tongue burrito bowl some time in the future!

The tacos came out quickly and the staff members were super friendly. This is a take out only place and the inside is quite narrow. I recommend the birria tacos. So juicy and a great deal for 3 tacos. Al Pastor was okay, not as juicy as i wanted it but quite a generous portion. Taco Tuesday deal: 15 for 4 tacos of the same kind, not bad.

Really disappointed. I have ordered from here many times and my only issue until today is that sometimes the pork does not taste very fresh. Today I found long hair in my birria tacos. Will not order from here again.

First impressions: N/A I ordered to go via seamless The Noms: Al Pastor tacos - not bad, generous portions. I would order this again, but pretty expensive at almost $5 a taco. If there's somewhere else to eat, I'd probably pass. Love that it comes with a slice of pineapple... some places either skimp on the pineapple or skip it altogether. Tacos Dorado - THE WORST! When I ordered they have options for 1) chicken 2) cheese 3) chicken and cheese. I selected option #3 thinking that it would be chicken and cheese both inside each tacos dorados... but instead I was give two chicken tacos dorados (fairly good, but a bit dry) and two cheese dorados (gross!). The cheese dorados were inedible because the cheese was solid, not melty or cheesy, it was a still solid block of cheese that tasted stale and tough. I had to abandon the last two (see picture) after one bite of the cheese dorado. Gross gross gross! They should have been more explicit in saying that it wasn't mixed chicken and cheese. Totally gross. Will not order again. In Conclusion: 2/10. I probably would not order here again and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else either. NO!

I hadn't been to Taco Mix in years. I grew up on 116 and use to come here way before the fancy reno. The tacos used to be $2 but now they are $4.50. I decided to stop by yesterday since i was in the area. The restaurant had about four other people inside. After i looked at the menu outside and decided to step in, the people were already exiting. The service here is quick. Upon walking in, i was not greeted or immediately asked what i wanted. It took a while for someone to acknowledge me. I think they are use to people walking in and immediately screaming what they want. I ended up ordering the shrimp tacos, which they have a menu items with 3 of them. Surprisingly the tacos each had 5 shrimp. It was topped with cabbage, onions and cilantro. They also added a sauce on top. The salsa hot sauces are now in small plastic packaging like the Ketchup packets, really cool upgrade. The tacos were really good. I didnt feel overwhelmingly full or bloated after. I got the order pretty quickly too. Overall the service was not bad at all. Everyone was kind, respectful and nice. The tacos are expensive now BUT everything everywhere IS. I'm appreciative that this place is worth the additional cost. The quality and quantity is unmatched. I can't wait to be back. I highly recommend this place for a quick bite to work on the go. Btw, they do have outdoor seating.

I been going here for years, way before they got their status, the food is great, best tacos in town. Is more like a grab and go ambiance and the town is very culturally diverse as if you were actually in Mexico. The service is on point and direct to the point. Great place to grab your taco and go.

We had our usual list of spots in Midtown East, but this time we wanted something a little different. We ultimately landed on Mexican, however even then there were several spots to chose from. One of my colleagues found CdM, and since we had nothing to lose we decided to check it out. In terms of physical space at CdM, there is very little; this is actually a walk-up spot hence it is solely a takeout restaurant. The menu is pretty straightforward - lots of Mexican staples with a good variety to choose from. The burrito bowl looked good so I decided to go with that - I was given choice of protein (I chose pastor) and types of beans (I chose black). The bowl was really good - all the ingredients tasted fresh and they were generous with the portion. They added sour cream to the top of the bowl and it came with a side of salsa verde which I thought was a nice touch. We also ordered some bags of tortilla chips to share - these were my favorite kind as they were semi-thick and super crunchy. Overall, I had a solid experience at Cinco de Mayo. It definitely hit the Mexican craving spot and I would have no qualms returning for another meal.

If you are someone who is looking at an aesthetic place, this is a top contender. Unfortunately, I would say this place is better looking than the food is good. The food was fine, appetizers were all fresh but lacked any real depth in flavor. I wasn't too thrilled with the bone marrow I had either (but the tortillas come in the cutest basket). Personally, if it wasn't for the drinks and the space, I cant say this place is worth it - you're not coming here for the food. Another little complaint I have is the women's restroom on the second floor - right by the door is a floor to ceiling mirror which I understand was included to make the space seem bigger, but my friends and I agreed that it is a little misleading - I kept wanting to walk into it thinking there was more space there and not wall. I would recommend maybe putting a decal on it to clearly show its mirror.
