This is not your typical Mexican place like you see in Corona. Refried Beans' plates are also pricier than most Mexican places. The name of this place does not sound Mexican at all. Their plates are really fancy and when you do takeout, they put their black beans in a fancy nice white round paper cup that you do not see in other Mexican places. The beans got mozzarella cheese on it, which I did not like at all. This place just caters to people in the neighborhood... especially for the prices they got going. I ordered here a couple of times when I used to be here and the portions are just kind of too small for me. I always ordered the combo platter with the 2 burritos or 2 enchiladas of chicken and beef. The environment was intimate and comfortable, and the music was at a reasonable volume, letting me speak without having to yell. The food was good, and the service was excellent. I came here with a friend to catch up and have a quick lunch. I usually pass by this place and the outdoor section is packed so I figured it would be a nice place to come to. I was having trouble figuring out what to order since the menu is pretty big, but I saw another table order a fajita dish. So that prompted me to order a skirt steak fajita and my friend order the Mexican shrimp dish. We also ordered some Mojitos, which were good, but my friend ended up getting a headache from drinking it. Back to the food, we both thought it was delicious up until I got extremely sick. It took about 20 minutes for it's a kick in, but my stomach was in shambles. I had to rush home because I was feeling so bad and I almost didn't make it. My friend did not get sick, but I will never come back due to what the food had done to my stomach. I'm not sure how I got sick, but it definitely was this place since it was the only thing I had to eat for the day. I also wanted to comment on the service, the waiter made us feel weird, and he was very unattended to when we were ordering. I was on my way to see my aunt at a nursing home that's a few blocks away so I ordered food through the app for pickup. I ordered a chimichanga with steak and arroz con camarones. The app gives you the option to say no to certain things to go along with your order. I said yes to guacamole for both orders which I didn't receive. I also said yes to utensils which should include napkins. When I got there to pick up the order I asked the young lady did you put forks, napkins and straws for the drinks that I had she said yes. I get all the way to the nursing home and go through the bags and I have no utensils no napkins. Luckily my aunt had a leftover utensil pack from her lunch. Also as I stated I ordered a chimichanga with steak they gave me a chimichanga with shredded beef which is not the same. I previously ordered from this place and had a small issue with my order but I didn't write a review about it but this time I felt that I needed to. It wasn't like I was going home where I could use my own utensils and then to walk back while my food sits and gets cold was not what I was looking to do because they didn't give me what I asked for. For the amount of money you spend at restaurants these days they should just automatically give you utensils it shouldn't be an option anyway. I was seated with my partner and sat for 30 minutes without so much as our drink order taken before we decided to leave. A large group came in about 10 minutes after us and they got their drinks and had their food order taken within minutes. In an neighborhood with more than 15 Mexican restaurants, Refried is my closest! as I always try to patronize local places; this has been my go to restaurant for years. One of thei promotions is a birthday coupon annually. Last year when i did not receive mine I spoke to the owner...(her excuse was "computer error" no offer of a make up or anything...however, "Ok" was her response. Another year NO COUPON..another "computer error"? The food is nice..the drinks good but overpriced. The staff are outstanding! I am very annoyed by the indifference toward customer satisfaction shown by the owner (and will take longer walks in the future!) The restaurant is modestly cute; but somewhat cramped. The vegetarian taco salad was pretty standard - nothing special but it hit the spot with lettuce, tomato, veggies, and guac in a tostada. It didn't come with any beans, so I ordered a side of black beans which was enormous (see photo) and delicious. My partner got something from the brunch menu which included a $3.95 frozen margarita and chips and salsa, which they let us eat outside at their tables while we waited for the takeout to be ready. I think this is an unfriendly Mexican restaurant, which l used to like, but now survives mainly because there is no competition. The food is dry and flavorless. They greatly raised their prices after Covid, and now even charge a fee to use a credit card. They charge for every little item, and seem to actually despise their customers. Several times now l have been floored by the rudeness of the waiters. So manager was HORRIBLE. Prices went up $10 for same food I ordered days ago. Food was crappy tonight and food left out of order. When I called they played games and offered me a laughable refund. They also took an hour for the manager to call me back. He told me to never order from the restaurant again after I asked for the owners name. Lastly- I order from there like once a week. Well, the atmosphere was nice. Very colorful with a lot of Mexican flare. The decor was interesting. There were dried Chiles, rice, and beans on display inside of the table. That was pretty nice. However that was just about it as far as the pros go. I've never had a margarita that I didn't like. These margaritas were just....okay. Food wise, I'd say the best part of my meal would have to be the refried beans. The chicken was flavorful but dry. The enchilada sauce was a tad spicy, also flavorful but just not memorable. Service though? Subpar. We were seated quickly but 2 large tables that came after us were served first. Very rarely checked on by the host. We had to try and flag down the servers for everything which sucked given our proximity to them. They were right next to us. Ehh, overall the experience wasn't terrible as the steak and eggs for brunch were delightful the rest of the experience kind of just sucked as the service overshadowed the few good things about the visit. Fantastic food!!! Walked by earlier around 3 and there was a line out the door. So we kinda knew it was a hot spot in the area. Came for early dinner and we ordered a steak (flank) taco salad and a chicken quesadilla. This food was so fresh and flavorful. Not the average Mexican joint. It's way up there in Manhattan but imho worth it. Service was great- prompt and informational. There's also outdoor seating which is comfortable. Been here twice and can't wait to go back. Service is always great and the servers are super friendly and quick. We've gotten the mini chicken tacos (flautas) served with cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and salsa. My favorite thing to get is the steak salad in the crunchy bowl. This our favorite restaurant in the neighborhood! We go here for anniversaries, birthdays, celebrations and just because. We are vegetarian and besides having a dedicated vegetarian section they are attentive to our requests. The staff are always friendly and, of course, the margaritas are clutch. So many varieties and a multitude of tequilas and beers. The kids menu is great for the pickiest eaters (our 6-year old is one of them). Unfortunately authentic mexican food is NOT found here! The food is bland and lacks seasoning. The place is cute with a patio in back, yellow walls, a small bar and sidewalk seating. The tables are unique and interesting with beans, rice, chilies etc under a glass display top. The menu has variety and some dishes are about $20. Apparently they also have a $30 minimum for credit card payment which in itself I dont like. We ordered the basic combination platter with a chicken burrito, beef taco and chicken enchilada. The platter also came with beans and rice and was quite plentiful. Ordered the side of quacamole instead of the dip thankfully as it was bland. True to what is stated in the menu, they do use perfectly fresh ripe avocados, unfortunately it ends there. Not much else added (i.e. oregano, salt, jalapeno, tomatoes,etc), that would give it flavor and not just end up tasting like mashed up ripe fresh avocado= not a good guacamole in my book. The chicken burrito was ok but tasted like the kind I can buy in the freezer section and heat up in the microwave, nothing special. The enchilada was bland dry chicken thrown in a tortilla with sauce and cheese poured on top. The beef taco was atrocious- bland chewy beef with no sauce, no cilantro and only topped with slivered iceberg lettuce. I am not sure who cooks in the kitchen, but it doesnt taste like a mexican chef. The rice was bland and nothing like real mexican rice. Overall not impressed by this "mexican" food, tasted more like watered down american food masquerading as mexican. Even my local salvadorean restaurant makes better tacos- for shame! I like to go to this place for its drinks and shrimp quesadillas. They have a full fledge margarita bar menu (about ten different types). So if you're a margarita fan, this might be a place you'd want to check out. The drinks are strong, but definitely on the sweeter side, which is a plus to me. The only thing is that this place closes relatively early for a place where you can get some drinks on a night out in New York. Other places stay open at least after midnight. read more

I have given Refried Beans numerous chances now and I'm done!! I live in the neighborhood and love having a Mexican Restaurant so close but I just can't support this establishment any longer. I do not want to speak too negatively on the food because it is not the worst but you can find much better not too far away. What I do want to let my fellow eaters/drinkers know is about their Margaritas. I have tried several off the menu. House. Premium. Optimum. They're downright HORRIBLE! I gave them the benefit of the doubt on the house marg because a restaurant needs to make a dollar but I am completely disappointed. Today I had their "Optimum" and would rather drink bile. Between that and their bartender/waitstaff having their Apple earbuds in and taking calls with their significant others while waiting on you.
