This place is called refried beans for a reason! These are quite possible the best refried beans I've ever had, they're creamy, smooth and ever so tasty! This is definitely one of my go to place in the heights, be it take out, delivery, or eat in. The decor is festive with out being over the "mexican" the service is good and the food is fantastic, they even have garden area seating available which is really nice in the summer, I'm not sure if it's open in the winter. A friend and I stopped in here for an early (6 pm) saturday dinner. We sat outside and were pleased with the prompt bus service but thats about it. The waiter was aggressive, rude, and clumsy. To make things worse, he was unapologetic when he dropped silverware or was asked for a drink to be altered. Specifically a blended, 9 dollar margarita. The drink was way too strong and melty, and not in the way a great margarita might be way too strong. When asked if there as anything that could be done about this, rather than offer a different drink, or take it back, or any other reasonable fix, he gave us a flat out no. The food was overpriced and bland. Their "great, only the best avocados" guacamole, was only avocado, no spice no zest no salt. The food was forgettable, the waitstaff rude, and the topper was that its cash only unless you pass 30. I highly recommend the burritos (especially the little burritos in the combination platter, they're so good!) and of course, the refried beans are excellent. I'm not sure why this has gotten such bad reviews. I've ordered take out from here at least once a week for the last 6 months or so and I think they only made a minor mistake once (and every order has some sort of nonstandard request due to my special diet). I love their fajitas with such fresh vegetables that include squash, zucchini, and carrots in addition to the standard peppers and onions. I special request whole wheat tortillas with no problem. The only time this was not accommodated was the one time I dined in. The waitress was insistent it could not be done and this confused me, but I just ate them sans tortilla. I think their previous name sounded better than "refried beans" but honestly I've never tasted better refried beans anywhere so I guess it's apropos. For around $17, I got the 3 item sampler for dinner (chicken enchilada, chicken burrito and beef taco...all three of which were excellent), refried beans, rice, chips and salsa. It was way more food than I was prepared for. They have a great menu with as much selection as you would want from a Mexican place, their prices are beyond fair for what you get, the delivery was VERY quick...and the flavor was pretty good! I really wanted to dig this place. Their food is good, delivery's fast, prices are decent, menu has good choices BUT the last time I ordered from here, I bit into the tip of a plastic spork (spoon/fork utensil). The sharp piece of plastic was wrapped up in my beef enchilada so there was no way of knowing it was on the plate either. I thought I chipped a damn tooth biting into that enchilada! Anyway, I was in the middle of Game of Thrones and I was hungry as hell. I had a 5 second melt down, spit out the piece of plastic and my girl looked at me like I was a maniac. I shrugged it off, pushed the enchilada to the side and finished eating my refried beans and rice. Refried Beans was the first restaurant we ate at in Inwood after signing the lease to our apartment and has been a staple of our neighborhood experience ever since. The wait staff is amicable and takes the time to care about their customers and are always helpful with meal and drink suggestions and social banter. Meals, priced around $13, are fairly cheap and are large enough to leave you feeling full and with a small satchel of leftovers. Specials abound daily, and Refried Beans' fifth anniversary celebration is coming up this month. From the burritos, to the fish tacos that come heaped with white fish and a salsa so delicious you'll be licking the ramekin, there's something to quench practically anyone's thirst for Mexican-American cuisine. Most entree meals come with a side of rice and beans, and all meals come with the staple house tortilla chips and salsa. Drinks are also well crafted, with the Mayflower Margarita (a frozen margarita with Refried Beans' signature sangria on top) really messing me up the last time I was there. Just for the record, I'm a lightweight, but still. Sometimes the wait can be a bit rough, and the bathroom isn't the greatest (and neither is the view), but the atmosphere inside is cozy and hospitable, as much as the food is warm and yummy in my tummy. Nothing, dique, "authentic" about this Mexican food. That being said, it's okay enough to eat but it really isn't anything spectacular and it sure as he'll isn't 'real' Mexican food. Clearly management is trying to coax it into becoming one of these Uptown-chic locales. Quite frankly, they're missing the ball with that, given the size of the venue, the neighborhood and the stupefyingly mediocre cuisine. It's also worth noting that the service is often horrible. I live nearby and that's the only reason I still occasionally go here. Me and my bf came in on a Sunday night for dinner. I ordered steak tacos and my bf ordered a burrito. The food took a while to come out so not the place to go if you're looking to grab something fairly quickly. When the food did come out, the steak was tough and bland. I've been dying to find a great Mexican restaurant near me. I had high hopes for this place, but it fell a little short. The food was good, but it was kinda bland. Just a little more seasoning would have been great. I had the chicken quesadilla on the lunch special menu and for the price, $7, it was a lot of food. The specials are definitely the way to go. Returning to NYC, to spend time with cousins who were visiting from France, lead to a peaceful tour of the Cloister museum. Hoping to follow up with a nice lunch, we stopped at the restaurant in the park, but decided to look for an alternative close by. A short walk away, we spotted the outdoor seating and decided to give Refried Beans a try. In short; great decision ! The restaurant was clean, they quickly arranged a table for eight, distributed the menus and served us water: great service. The restroom was very clean, which makes one feel comfortable. Salsa and chips were pretty standard fare and went well with the $5 margarita lunch special. Now the food, that is where they distinguished themselves. I ordered the Chicken Burrito, which came with rice and refried beans. Delicious, I would order it again. My Sister ordered the chicken fajita which was over the top. The fajita vegetables were superb and the portion was very large for a lunch portion. Other orders included beef, which was tender and flavorful, as was the chicken. The next time someone in the upper Manhattan area ask me to recommend a Mexican restaurant, this will be it. read more

Went here Saturday night with my three year old son and sister in law. This was our first time here so we were walking into an unknown. I've passed this place dozens of times, mostly at night when looking for parking, and it's always full, so I thought 'hey, let's check it out tonight'. Pros: kid friendly! At first I was skeptical about it by looking from the outside but the staff was very nice to my very happy and active child. Most places either give me the eye or are just plain rude. They've won me over already; I had the black bean soup, I wasn't really in the mood for something heavy however it was good. My son had a hot dog with fries and he had no complaints (he ate most of it). I can't remember the name of what my sister in law ate but it contained steak, rice, and beans. She also liked her meal. We also had sangria and a piña colada. Both drinks were tasty! Cons: we were sitting in the back, kind of like an outside/patio/sort of setting. It was beautiful! However, because of the lounge next door, we were inhaling all of the hookah/cigarette smell. It wasn't a lot but enough to smell it. I wouldn't have mind had I been without my child. For the future, I will ask to be seated inside the restaurant if I'm with child (and would recommend to those who have children and are non-smokers). Overall, a good experience. BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN THE HEIGHTS! This place provides large portions, though it can be overpriced at dinner time. If you can catch the lunch special, DO IT! It's worth it. This is not tex-mex, this is the real deal. Not authentic Mexican food like you'd get in California, but it comes pretty close. I order take out from this place on Grubhub. I usually can grab lunch for under 20 dollars, dinner under 30. A few things I recommend on the menu are the tacos and enchiladas. The burritos are also also amazing but depending on which one you buy, they can range from 11.50-13.00 so you'll have to throw some money in for that. They make amazing refried beans! Refried beans mexican grill is great! I went fo brunch today, saturday & i had the mexican torta with a passion fruit margarita, then had a coconut margarita! It was great! I came with my family (aunts, uncles, sister, cousin, niece) & we were all able to enjoy our food & talk! The reason why i am not giving them a 5 star is because they did mess up on my sister's order & forgot to bring one of the drinks to the table, & sense a bit of stress and attitude in the servers (hoping it was just a bad day). This was our first time at Refried Beans after having been recommended by our neighborhood locksmith. My gf and I were seated promptly. First round of chips and salsa are on the house, second round is $2.50. I had a jalapeño margarita and my gf had a regular. Both delicious, but not overly spicy, so don't be afraid (white people)! I ordered the carne asada and my gf the carne asada burrito. Both were delicious. My steak was served at a perfect med rare and came with a tiny quesadilla on top and guacamole. We paid with credit card and with a 25% tip it was about $65. A little pricey for the heights but great vibe and a good atmosphere. The food is definitely delicious Mexican food with a gourmet touch, not cheap street food. I noticed a small bar, too, I'll have to come back and sit there and have a few drinks sometime. Only when the check arrived was it explained that the order was placed in the computer at 4:00:53. So I had to pay for regular margarita, which I didn't order, but was served. Okaaaaayyyy. Manager wouldn't budge. Server was caught in-between. After paying full price for that (and my entree) I was given a flyer for a free margarita with a $20 purchase VALID THE SAME DAY ONLY. I was in Wash Heights visiting Cloisters/Fort Tryon Park, so I swung by here to grab a bite. It was a nice enough day to sit outside, so I did. I ordered one of the lunch specials which was a burrito, an enchilada, and rice/beans. The food was pretty good. Nothing to write home about. The waitstaff was excellent; very kind and attentive. The outdoor seating is very close to a bus stop. This can be uncomfortable at time as there are random people all up in your meal. Again, it was an ok meal, but I don't plan on trekking all the way up to Wash Heights to eat here again. read more
