I was thoroughly impressed and satisfied with the experience I received for my 40th birthday event on Saturday, 2/26/22. First off, I can't thank Ms. Nicole Ellis enough for all of her help and effort in helping me plan and coordinate my event. Communication via email and telephone with her regarding the planning of my event was effortless and always prompt. On the day of the event, Reuben, the banquet captain and his staff went beyond my expectations to make my guests and I have a memorable experience. I received many compliments from my guests regarding how delicious all the appetizers and the plated entrees- the filet and the ginger soy salmon were. In addition, the patio view of the Long Beach shoreline during sunset was amazing. My event was in the Bayview Room and patio deck area. The room and the patio area was the perfect setting for an intimate party with close family and friends. For reference, our event had 56 people. Came here for a retirement party event and had a great experience. The event included a cocktail hour and then a plated dinner. The cocktail hour was set up at the bar inside and then outdoor area. I wish there was more seating outside, since the weather is so nice in Long Beach. We mainly had to stand, which was odd. The indoor area was spacious and the food was surprisingly good. They had a fish and steak option, we tried both and both were tasty. They had audio visual capabilities and it was a nicely coordinated event space overall. I would recommend this space for an event. Here goes 5 staff to all the staff and Michelle M. (Banquet Manager) if I'm not mistaken for doing all our requests and special agreement we had for the menu and space. I initially spoke to her asking for a quote on their smallest private room space. Unfortunately, the total count is way lower than the quoted amount for the said room and it's not ideal to take it. Michelle provided some alternative and worked with me on the menu. She had us stayed at the main dining hall but where we were was somehow private, no other people, and a long table set for all of us. Michelle worked with me as well for making our own menu so it will be controlled and uniform for everyone. She did an amazing job making our personal menu and listed all the foods we selected for the event. I really appreciate all her hard work regardless of how busy the restaurant was at that time. My step daughter had her wedding here, everything was exceptionally beautiful. The wedding on the roof was picture perfect, cocktail hour the bartender made the drinks to perfection to get the party started. Being the only vegan, the salad and entree was delicious. My spouses chicken was moist and flavorful, the cake was delicious and moist. The event staff were helpful and pleasant, the view was amazing it was perfectly clear with little breeze. That was pretty much my situation and I was grateful that the hosts requested a vegan meal for me and that The Reef could accommodate. Visually it looked amazing! So much color! This zucchini is stuffed with more zucchini, yellow squash, asparagus, red bell pepper, and onion. The onion was pretty much the only thing that gave this dish flavor. There are only so many options for a Long Beach Dine L.A. experience. Might as well go with the one with a view, eh? The Reef Restaurant offers upscale American/fusion food with beautiful harbor views. For me, I felt that this is one of those places where you mostly pay for the view. Service was good. Food presentation was great, and the food was good, albeit half the time over-salted. The Dine L.A. menu included a good variety of offerings. $40 for 3 courses, and $15 extra for the wine pairing. DO go for the wine pairing! It's a good deal, plus, the parings that are offered truly go well together. I was part of a group of 4 for dinner, so we were able to pretty much try everything. Our favorites were the spinach and artichoke dip, calamari, blacked swordfish, the prime rib, and the lava cake. Not mind-blowing or anything, but I do say this is a decent pick for Dine L.A. in Long Beach. read more

Made reservations to celebrate a birthday but we had to wait for over an hour to be seated because they had a wedding banquet going on. I'm disappointed how short staff they were and it took too long to get our food. Also they ran out of sword fish which was part of their dineLA menu so you'd think they would have more being it's only 1 of the 3 entrees to select from. Bless the bartender for being our server while also tending the bar packed bar because other people were waiting to be seated. Regrettably the food was not worth the wait or value. I did very large events both pre and post COVID both were lovely but the food options were too restrictive after COVID. No flexibility. I'm sad to say I wasn't impressed after. For the price, they could do better by allowing a tasting before the event or allow add ones for the side dishes if requested. I might consider them because of the location and view., but not much else. They just don't stand out as they used to. read more

Dine LA 2018: We couldn't make it out to the LA area to try some of the restaurants on the list this year. So as a last resort, we selected a restaurant closest to the OC area. The only decent one was The Reef. It's not the greatest but not the worst either. The best part of this restaurant was the LB harbor view. The interior is dim and has a romantic vibe. We took the scenic route through Seal Beach and Belmont Shore to get here. The 710 freeway commute would have been a mess around dinner time. The Reef is located off Queens Way in downtown Long Beach. The drive leading to the restaurant is very curvy and bit hazardous at night. It's near the Hotel Maya by Hilton if you need a landmark to remember. You will need to drive pass there to find the restaurant. The area needs a makeover. We had book reservations via Open Table ahead of time. When we arrived, the hostess said it would be about 5 minutes to get seated. The waiting area is so cozy with a log cabin feel. The chandelier lighting gave it a touch of elegance. There's also a wine display case. Quite fancy! The restaurant seemed empty on a Thursday evening. Many customers chose the patio seating with the view. We were happy with our booth that had an amazing view as well. Our server was decent. He brought us drinks and the bread basket immediately. We chose the entrees from the Dine LA menu. Our dinner choices: *Course1 Appetizer: clam chowder for both. The soup was not bad. It tasted more watered down than creamy. There was a generous amount of clams. No oyster crackers are provided. Just fresh ground black pepper to taste. *Course2 Main entree: Herb roasted prime rib 12 oz served with seasonal veggies and mashed potatoes. The meat was ordered medium rare and still came out so dry. Even with the au jus it failed. The veggies were so salty. The mashed potatoes were blah. The pineapple fried rice was a better option. It's accompanied with grilled shrimp and scallops. The bacon fried rice is served in half a pineapple. Delicious and tasty. * Course3: Dessert: Strawberry bread pudding. Skip this altogether. It was fresh out of the oven and still had no flavor. Not good! Overall, this restaurant is adequate for date night or happy hour drinks. The food is mediocre. Hi, I wish I could give no stars. I was very disappointed in the service myself, my fiance, and our wedding planner received at your establishment on Friday, July 31st, 2020 at 2:30 pm. My wedding planner had made an appointment for us to come to take a tour of our upcoming wedding next year. Our appointment was set for 4:00 pm, however, we arrived at 2:30 pm and we were seen by a young woman named Maria Sabrine. Maria greeted us in the lobby and told us what rooms we were going to be viewing. We started the tour by taking stairs to the outside area where potentially the ceremony would take place. When we got to the outside area we noticed here was an elevator and Maria said we have an elevator. ( my thoughts along with my fiance and wedding planner's thoughts were how come we couldn't have taken the elevator up to the area in the first place? why tell us there was an elevator after the fact?) anyhow, we saw the outside which was beautiful. Maria then pointed... not actually taking me in the bridal and showing me around BUT pointed to it. I had to go in and turn on the light myself to take a look around. We were then taken to another room which was closed off because it was being painted or had been painted and the paint was drying. However, we were able to see it. My planner did ask Maria why would your establishment be taking appointments when you are renovating because we were not able to see all the rooms and there were dust and dirt piles on the floor... not very safe. Maria answered by saying since the business is closed that would be a good time to do the renovating. We were done with the tour and we thought were going to sit down and talk about the cost of the venue (mind you my planner had asked what is the cost of the venue was) and what was all included. well....we were wrong!!!! we stood in front of the office and Maria opened the folder that had the dinner menu and the price of the plates. She didn't break down what the cost of the venue was or anything of that nature. My planner asked what the cost of an extra would be and Maria told her it would $750.00!!! FOR ONE EXTRA HOUR??!?!?!?!. My fiance walked out and my eyes got wide and said $750.00 for an extra hour? My planner asked Maria why was an extra hour $750.00? and Maria's reply wasn't very believable. She gave us the folder and we left. I did go back in there and returned the folder. We left The Reef very disappointed. Maria wasn't very personable it gave us the impression that she didn't want to assist us with the tour or anything like that. Her whole vibe was off and it showed. In a time like this, where businesses are being closed due to a nationwide pandemic, I would think that when someone calls your business wanting to potentially have their wedding at your establishment that your event coordinator would be personable, exudes customer service and gives an awesome tour that would have us excited to have our wedding there. It was the total opposite. We will not be back and I will make sure I tell my family and friends about this disappointing experience. My advice to the management team is to definitely train your staff over again... make sure your staff provides a customer service experience to future clients that will want to have their events at your place of business. Too expensive for service! I had the worst experience of all. On the day of the daughter's quinceanera we were allowed to come in a bit early to decorate and the chairs were not delivered until very late. our decorations were not ready and i had to pay the vendor extra to wait and put the seat covers i had order for that day. Second issue, too many events were going on at the same time. There was no security guard or anyone supervising . allot of the guest from other parties were coming to mine and sitting to eat. Instead of me seating and enjoying my daughters party , i had to go around and ensure to escort the people out. all night i had this issue. There was a small sign that didnt even have where to go. It was very confusing. Third i was charged additional 17 plates which i didnt even go over. i went through the guess list and the people i invited came i was even missing about 20 from the list. How was i over? i had to pay to avoid my guest from not eating. Also the steak finished and allot of my guest didn't get steak instead chicken which was also incorrect as i ordered breast not a thigh on my request. Also i order vegetables not broccoli. The servers were a mess and not coordinated. They are to be train to handle big parties but on mine all were confused and in a hurry. One of the servers even dropped all the bread.  The plates were being picked up even though people were still eating. It was rude and unprofessional. I had 2 hrs of free beer and wine the beer was disgusting like it was sitting for years , not fresh at all and the bartender was so rude to my guest and even to me that i paid for the party. THEY NEED BETTER TRAINNING. To top it all off by husbands window was broken into and allot of our things were stolen. when asked for a manager , someone came out and didn't even dare to help instead he said THE REEF is not responsible for any car, call the cops and complaint there! I am very upset i received very bad comments from my guest of the party the servers were treating them very disrespectful. I do not recommend this place , overpriced, and i will never reserve here again.  ( on a note i provided serving plates and 20 of those were broken also Reef didn't take responsibility). We have come back here a few more times, it seemed I always wanted the views more than the food. The restaurant front is just gorgeous, koi ponds and waterfall are so beautiful. The open views of the Queen Mary, Queensway harbor and Long Beach skyline are just breathtaking. The bar and lounge area has the best views, definitely have a few drinks at the lounge and enjoy the relaxing vibe and views, day or night, it's all amazing. This place is a great choice for special events or occasions too. We like to come here on holiday occasions, Thanksgiving and Easter. They have great selections of holiday buffet food at reasonable prices. For food they focus on meats and poultry, chilled seafood selections are decent, but hot seafood selections are less than impressive. This restaurant is definitely for meat lovers. The service is always on point, all servers are so friendly and attentive, although it gets slow at times cause this is such a huge restaurant, bar and lounge. I think this is one of the top places for brunch in Long Beach, can't beat the views, if you love meats and poultry, definitely try this place out! read more

The Reef is a waterfront restaurant with a fantastic view just down the road from the Queen Mary. Ok, kinda down the road. Lucky I was not driving, the roads in that part of the harbor is undecipherable. We did finally get there and was seated at a great table overlooking the harbor. While at the same time the rest of the nation was under a deep freeze, it was a sunny afternoon in SoCal. The service was warm and very helpful. I ordered the Shrimp Linguini. The shrimps were huge and plentiful. The sauce was a delicate balance of garlic, olive oil and Italian seasonings. The pasta was al dente but unfortunately there was not much of it. Oh well, helps me cut down on the carbs. Next time? Gonna try one of their burgers. read more

We decided to celebrate my friend's birthday at the Reef since they have beautiful views of the Harbor! pretty empty on a Sunday night, perhaps this place is mostly for special occasions/celebrations --complimentary bread served with pesto and butter: love that they offer pesto for the bread --crusted mahi mahi: a bit bland but great crusting --crab cakes: the deep fried crust was a bit over-browned --sampler platter: a big GREASY plate of onion rings, spinach dip, calamari and wings (the onion rings were my favorite) yummy but not exactly the best appetizer choice since it's heavy --rib eye: a bit chewy and lacking salt --cheesecake: a rich dessert they were nice enough to bring out for the birthday girl on the house! First impressions are lasting impressions! When we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess told us it would be 45-60 minutes before we would be seated. I said no problem and put our name on the list. We asked for a chair for my 82 year old dad and she told us NO and they didn't have any chairs to give us. So my husband talks to the manager, who profusely apologizes and said her employee acted completely inappropriately. After 25 minutes, the hostess tells us they're going to seat us but it will take 2 hours for us to be served. I'm like are they trying to get us to leave the restaurant?! So I ask the manager and the manager apologizes AGAIN and says they have a big party coming in 2 hours and they would prefer that we finish dining by then. Big difference and clearly the hostess is completely lacking in communication skills. So we get our table and head to the bar where the service doesn't get any better. The bartender loudly proclaims that they're all out of clean glasses, proceeds to "wash" a glass for me and attempts to give me a drink in half washes dirty glass with food on it. The bartender's mixology skills were questionable and I certainly felt like I could have made better cocktails. The only reason why I'm giving 2 stars and not 1 is because the server we had was very polite, funny, cordial, and just and overall pleasurable attitude. The food was nothing special. I ordered the beef short ribs and have had better. My daughter's prime rib appeared pale and bland and my husband's steak was dry and over cooked. The kicker was the peach mojito that I ordered with dinner. Can you believe they made it with freaking canned peaches ?! That was a cheap move and the drink was disgusting and disappointing. My Hubby's Christmas party was here this year and sadly we didn't like the service and horrid food. I felt like I was eating dog food. Portions were small and nobody was full or satisfied. You know its BAD when nobody has nothing to say. The only thing that was fine, were the drinks and nice view of the Long Beach shoreline. But thank earth and bartender for that. The whole time we were overlooking the water through large windows during dinner. Ground floor bar area smelled like Mold. My family from Long Beach hosted my grandma's 85th birthday bash here which was taken place at their large ballroom. The seating was probably more than 150+ guests. The event included a private deck which had multiple bon fire pits and a beautiful view of downtown and the lit-up bridge. The view was spectacular. My family and I enjoyed cocktails and lounging in their back patio while also enjoying the comfort of the intimate birthday party for my grandmas inside the ballroom. The food that is specially catered by The Reef includes: Ambrosia salad, fresh chicken salad, salmon, chicken stuffed with mushroom and sauce, fresh toasted rolls, asparagus, pilaf rice, and a skirt steak station. Everything was excellent tasting. The meat was tender & moist which was the main attraction of the food bar. There is a beautiful coffee station with lemonade too! Overall, my experience at The Reef was wonderful. My family had a wonderful time celebrating and eating. The Reef did an excellent job taking care of us as well as the bartenders at the bar. This is a great place for a prom date or a baby shower. The setting is beautiful. The food and service, however, are less than one expects for the price. We are just spent $113, not counting the tip, for a meal that only one of two of us ate. The calamari is fried and tender. A generous plate of circles of flesh with a few babies, served with a Tiki sauce, which is heavy on sugar and mayo. Nothing exceptional as expected at such a stunning location. My husband ordered the seafood collage which is shrimp, lobster, scallops and salmon over fettuccine in a heavy sauce. I ordered the Grand Prix with a choice of soup or salad, one of four entrees and a slice of cheese cake. We waited and waited for our entrees. At one point the waitress apologized for the delay. When the food did arrive, in my plate the vegetables were cold and only the meat was warm. I sent it back. By the time the plate came back, my husband had finished his meal. I found my short ribs too hot and too salty to eat. The garlic mashed potatoes didn't taste very garlicky. I had lost my appetite at this point. I declined to eat it and we asked for the check. I wasn't even asked if I wanted the cheesecake that came with the meal to go. We didn't get a discount for the slow service or the poorly prepared food. This was once a place worth saving your money for a really good meal. Now it isn't. It's a low class restaurant trying to be a classy joint. Did you see my photo of the dying roses? This looks to be an arrangement that should cost at least $100 that are not properly attended to. And on Saturday night? What are they thinking? I see the neglected roses as an analogy of the attention to details lacking at this restaurant. We will never return. read more

the Reef was such an incredible location for the celebration of life I had in Nov 2021. I worked with Maria Sibrian to set ups the event. She was amazing and worked with me seamlessly on every detail. the location, the Pacific room is awesome. it has a outdoor patio that was utilized for an additional bar area, with additional tables set up. it was a nice secondary area for people to meet and talk. the bar setups were great. the food I elected to have were 3 different "mingling stations' which worked perfectly to get people moving around and visiting. after the event I received so many great comments about the event, and how wonderful the location was. it was a wonderful, memorable event. Just like I wanted. I would absolutely use the Reef again for an event, and look to work with Maria again. read more

Got the prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes. The meat came with a side of au ju sause and horse radish sause. The horse radish wasn't all that spicy. I dipped a piece 3/4 of the way into the sause and bite wasn't all that spicy. It was nice but I think flavoring the horse radish sause with pepper of another spice might make it a little tastier. The steak itself was seasoned properly. You really are paying the higher prices for the food for the view out of the windows overlooking the bay of Long Beach which is impressive at night lighting up downtown. Calamari Market Price Spinach & Artichoke Dip Market Price Bleu Cheese Wedge Market Price Taco $3.00 Buffalo Chicken Wings $10.00 Tropical Ahi Poke $10.00 California Burger $10.00 I know there were beer & wine specials too. 6 different wines for $10 per glass. We had the Calamari & Poke. The Poke was stacked in a Tower with homemade fried wontons. It was amazing. In fact next time we will order 2 so we don't have to share. The Calamari-it was so tender & delicious. It came with a delicious marinara dipping sauce. We will be back next week when friends come in town. This review is long overdue, but better late then never! My husband and I got married here back in 2010, so making a reservation to celebrate our one year anniversary dinner was a no brainer. The setting is stunning. An ocean-front view complete with sailboats and yachts floating across the crystal blue water as the sun sets. We booked an early dinner as my husband had to catch an early flight, which worked out for us since we were all about a sentimental and delcious meal at a bargain price. For a little over $20 a person, you can enjoy a three course meal (soup or salad, entree, and cheesecake dessert) overlooking the Long Beach shoreline. And the food selection is great too! The entree selection includes Ratatouille Gnocchi, Atlantic Salmon or Chicken Roulade, but I always opt for their fatty prime rib, mm... So be sure to schedule a reservation with opentable.com to secure a spot. I believe they run this special year-round, but the hours are limited from 4:00pm -6:00pm, though 5:30 pm is the last time slot that they'll allow for the early bird special. There was a wonderful Christmas Day Breakfast presented by the Salvation Army, and hosted by The Reef. Extraordinary volunteers, and indeed if Brian and Liza are the face of these volunteers, kudos to all, for the good cheer and kindness. Having participated in similar events elsewhere, I have seen the tremendous energy and dedication required to put together such a grand scale event. The ambiance is nice. Great place for a date especially if you sit in the back patio area. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Be advised they may have events that get loud. Also, understand that if you sit in the back patio and you think you are alone with your date you may get disturbed occasionally since they give tours of the place to people that want their wedding there. Parking was good on a Thursday night. The food It was ok but not worth the price. Once again, you are going here for a romantic evening not to spoil your taste buds. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Nice venue for large, special gatherings, but not the most convenient location. My brother-in-law's family threw a big birthday bash for a beloved aunt and we had a great time. They'd rented the whole place for the afternoon and it was quite a to-do. The banquet room is spacious and nicely appointed with a great view; the buffet food was pretty good, and the staff was on the ball with any requests that came up. Driving to it and finding parking can be a bit of a struggle, but that would be my only complaint about this place. A great events space overall. read more
