AMAZING. Hands down the best lobster roll I've ever had. We drove an hour from Portland to try this place and waited an hour and a half in line because it was wrapped around the street. It was worth every second! The staff was great and came by to pass out waters and umbrellas to people waiting in line. My mom and I ordered the lobster roll, my sister got the fish and chips, and we split a side of fried scallops. The lobster roll was so stuffed I had to eat a ton of it off the top before I could pick it up. The butter was also so flavorful it made it even better. My sister loved the fish and their homemade tartar sauce. After eating here, I've had a hard time ordering lobster rolls anywhere else because I know it won't be as stuffed! I got to Maine yesterday and purposefully held out on my first bite of Maine Lobster until I got to Wiscasset so I can do it right and eat it at Red's. Was totally worth it, especially after talking to so many tourists in Portland who mentioned all their Lobster experiences thus far had been meh. Ya know, victims of tourist traps. Luckily I made it to Red's and man was it worth the wait. Sure the wait sucked, but whatever. They pile that Lobster high and mighty let me tell ya. And they had an amazing gluten free option for my wife. Plus if you are dairy free, they put the butter on the side too. Allen's daughter who runs the place is such a kind and wonderful woman. So friendly and happy to see all her customers there. That lobster was cooked perfectly and served in big pieces. I mean I don't know what else to say. I simply loved it. read more

2-hour wait. Was it worth it? Maybe just once; I wouldn't do it again (I would wait an hour and 15-minutes max lol). I only had the lobster roll, as my friends and I were all full from eating things at the Lobster Festival beforehand. Red's piles the lobster meat so high you can barely see the bread! Definitely my kind of roll. It was super fresh and they give you a container of melted butter to go with it. For the price (around $25 as of August 2019), it's worth what you get, considering NY prices for a measly non-satisfyingly-filled lobster roll is around $15-$20. This is an experience alright. The place really is a shack and only outside eating area is available (only portable bathroom here). With that said, I am absolutely happy to stop by. The lobster was piled high on our lobster rolls served with butter and we got fries with our order. The lobster tasted fresh and so good. It's voted as one of the best places to get lobster roll in the area and it lives up to the reviews. I wouldn't give it less than 5 stars given that it doesn't promise a fancy atmosphere. The lobster and butter are both above average and possibly the best we had so far in Maine. Certainly better than their competitor across the street. I know what you're thinking...this place does not need another review. Well, I am going to write one anyway. Red's Eats was recommended to me by my mother-in-law. I bookmarked it and did not even know if we would come across it on our trip until the morning we were going from Portland to Bar Harbor, and I saw it was on the way. We left Portland around 10 and got to Wiscasset at around 11:15. We found parking less than a block from the restaurant before the bridge (free street parking) and walked to the line. Red's does not open until 11:30 and the line did not seem very long, to be honest. However, we waited about an hour to place our order and maybe another 30 minutes to get our food. Originally, the plan was to split a lobster roll and get a side of scallops because all of the scallops reviews were great. As we neared the front of the line and saw the market price for lobster rolls was $22, we decided to each get one. We are gluttonous Americans after all! So...there were these HUGE lobster rolls, melted local butter, lightly fried scallops...and the thing is, I am not really a lobster fan. I knew going to Maine that I would be eating it, but as much as I was reasonably impressed by the McDonald's Lobster Roll (unfortunately not called McLobster in the restaurant), I could not believe how juicy, succulent, tasty, and generous this lobster roll was, seriously! The scallops were indeed delicious too, so fresh and tender. We chatted with some cool people in line, and enjoyed eating outside. Then we went on our merry way through the midcoast and downeast. She's dealing with a long line of ordering, and calling out ready to pick up order numbers, keeping everyone moving efficiently, & she was still SO FRIENDLY! We placed our order, & in about 10 minutes it came up. And was it a beautiful sight..... Lobster Roll - cold, naked lobster chunks. And by chunks I mean whole claws, half tails, surely more weight on each roll than an entire lobster! Warm, butter-toasted classic split bun - whose only function is to deliver the lobster to your mouth, meaning it was not overly bready. Served with a ramekin of HOT MELTED SALTED BUTTER. That was poured to serve (as I watched) out of a teakettle on the stove. Blueberry Cake - a hefty square of generously blueberry-studded white cake. Topped with whipped cream & a leaf of fresh mint that we saw being trimmed off the potted plant at the curb. Worth it!! The warm lady who took our order said "I think you'll like this" when I picked up the tray. I mean, you've got to be DEAD INSIDE IF YOU DO NOT LOVE THIS FOOD. Be warned - if you eat one of these lobster rolls, you WILL be ruined for all others. So don't make it your first ever! My boyfriend and I planned a weeklong trip through various parts of Maine with a goal of "eating our weight in lobster rolls". After scouring various must try lists, Red's was on every single one of them. I made it our first stop. While I was prepared to wait at least an hour for these rolls, I honestly was not prepared for the nearly 3 hour wait we ended up standing through. We arrived around 12pm and didn't end up eating until after 3pm. The staff was nice and passed along cups of cold water and at one point, small slices of watermelon. It was hot and they provided some umbrellas. But bring your sunscreen, because in the summer, you will burn regardless. Now for the fun stuff. Were the rolls good? Yes - the meat was fresh and sweet, and we loved how simple Red's makes it. All we did was add butter! Was there a lot of meat? Yes - but you pay for it at $26 per roll. Was it worth it? No - I wouldn't go back and wait 3 hours for a lobster roll. Not to mention, I was disappointed in how soggy the actual roll was. Yelpers complained about parking but I'm puzzled. There was a dirt road running between the rear of the shack and the river (Railroad Ave on Google Maps) and ample parking in neighborhood surrounding. Tuesday late afternoon wait (July '17) about 50 min. But by the time we sat down around 3:00 it was very short. Waiting in line you'll wonder if it's really that good or is there a better a place? Experienced folks say it's the best and I could not disagree. If for no other reason than the shear freshness and volume of lobster in the rolls. Locally produced amazing butter. Great "house made" tartar & cocktail were special as well. Don't even get me started about the scallops either. Lightly battered and fried to perfection!! Yes, it is true the line can be long. We went on a Sunday early evening and we waited for about an hour but it is also true that it is worth it. But the wait was not that bad. They had umbrellas to help shade from the sun, they came around with water and shrimp samples; and we got to talk to people equally excited to try the lobster rolls. We got a massive lobster roll and it was delicious. I can't say it was the best tasting lobster roll I've had but it sure was the biggest and best value. The only problem I had with it was that the roll was soggy and not from the butter because I did not drizzle the butter on it--it was too massive, I had to deconstruct it to maintain my dignity while eating it. Would I wait in line for a lobster roll like this one again? You betcha!!! Are the rolls the only reason to come to Red's? Uhm, no. The blueberry cake was fantastic and the fried scallops were delicious. This place has ruined scallops for me in the best possible way - as in I no longer feel like eating scallops anywhere else). They were perfectly fried, extremely large and melted in your mouth. They weren't overly salty and had a tinge if sweetness.. now dipped in that good ole golden butter.. The lobster roll is extremely packed, it's true there's over a full lobster in this one roll.. the most I've ever seen in a roll or maybe ever. It's really delicious; though hard to say if it's the best lobster I had. But it's Maine and I was already over 5 lobster rolls deep in the trip in the span of 3 days so lobster tastes were starting to become fuzzy. All I can say is get the scallops and you'll still be dreaming about it.. even over a week later as I write this review. All I have to say the first experience at reds was quite overwhelming and one that knocked my socks off, our second experience their lack something to be desired. Upon our first time at Red's we got there before opening and stood in line for over an hour which normally I am opposed to but when you have to try what is supposed to be the best, we waited we tried, and the lobster roll was absolutely amazing. Overstaffed and fresh lobster one of the best I've ever had while in Maine. And trust me we've had our fair share of lost her while in Maine and a New England. Just this past weekend we took a long trip and one of our first stops was it rats. We got there just before closing it's still in line for about 3045 minutes, and then got our to go order as they have close their outdoor seating for closing time. This lobster roll was definitely not the same as we had had in our previous trip Also, we ordered the scallops which were on the menu as being so fresh and delicious and an order of onion rings and both were very burnt and greasy. Overall, five stars for a gluten free lobster roll! The presentation was enticing to begin with and the food didn't disappoint. The lobster had a crisp freshness to it, not fishy at all and incredible when soaked in the side of butter. The gluten free bread was delicious too, perfectly toasted with a hint of butter and soft consistency. I went a little overboard and got the (not gluten free) crab cakes too which were also flavorful and perfect. We're both stuffed but extremely satisfied. As you got closer, there was sun umbrellas (sanitized between customers), however there wasn't enough for everyone in line. In the end, it was the very first lobster rolll I had in Maine. It is so fully packed with lobster meat that you can hardly see the buttered toast roll on the bottom. The lobster rolls are piled high with lobster meat. It tasted so fresh and succulent. Local butter on the side to dip was the perfect accompaniment. Also tried the sea scallops and boy were they delicious! Lightly battered and then fried, the scallops melt in your mouth. We'd heard about this place from my husband's old boss and heard rave reviews. When we got out of the airport in Portland, the rental car guy told us to skip Red's Eats in favor of other places. But here are some tips I got from scouring the Yelp reviews to make it a better experience! First of all, I don't believe in waiting 2 hours for any food. It's just crazy! So I would suggest that if you could, come here on a weekday early evening. We came around 5p on Monday and there wasn't much of a wait. Lunch time seemed a lot crazier as we saw that line on our way from Portland to Bar Harbor. Thanks for that tip, Yelp friends! Second, I got the impression that some local folks think this is a tourist trap because of how expensive it is. When we came, it was about $24 for a lobster roll. Actually, I thought that was a great value because they piled the roll so high with lobster that it felt like we were eating lobster with a side of bread. To me, a good lobster roll is pretty simple: give me loads of fresh lobster with a toasted bun and give me the option to dress it the way I want. Red's definitely delivered on that! As a comparison, we got lobster rolls at a place in Bar Harbor for $16 and it wasn't even half what Reds gave us. We also got the sea scallops because a lot of the reviews suggested them and that they melt in your mouth. If you like scallops, I'd definitely recommend. They're huge and fresh and delicious. And finally, we got mozzarella sticks. Even though Reds is know for their seafood, they have a pretty big menu for non-seafood lovers. And fried sea scallops take longer than a lobster roll to put together I think. You can't really miss this place because traffic is backed up going both ways! There seemed to be plenty of parking on the side streets when we came, not sure if that's the case when it's busier.
