Went to rebones on a Saturday for lunch. We were served warm cornbread with cold butter to start. We decided to get the buffalo wings as an appetizer, they were 5 stars and amazing!!! For our main dishes we got the jerk beef sandwich which didn't really taste like jerk beef, the rib combo which came with 1 or 2 ribs of each. The beef rib was delicious and the pork ribs were super dry you could barely eat them. The beans on the side were nasty and the Mac and cheese was like craft creamy Mac and cheese. I have eaten and enjoyed Redbones for years. Yesterday, my gal and I ordered the Beef Ribs. We were expecting excellent, juicy ribs. What we got were dryed out shoe leather ribs. I called to speak with the manager a few moments ago and expressed politely our dissatisfaction. She put me on hold; spoke with her superior and I was told they would only offer me a gift card for $10. The original ribs dinner cost $24. In my opinion this was poor customer service as a resolution. They are profitable enough to honorably refund the order and this truly is seriously petty. Too bad, I genuinely would have preferred giving a great review to this long established venue. Unfortunately; I can't. The ribs had a flavorful dry rub crust and fall-off-the-bone meat. The brisket was ok. The hand-cut fries were decent (sliced thinner than my preference). Loved the bbq here. The brisket was fall-apart-in-your-mouth tender, and the ribs were meaty and with just the right amount of dry rub. I got their combination plate, which came with St. Louis and Texas ribs, and some brisket. When we got home, the food was barely luke warm and the portions were small. There was one small thigh, 3 ribs and smoked beef brisket. The sides were cole slaw and mashed potatoes. The ribs hardly any meat and BBQ sauce. The smoked beef brisket was dry and we had to douse it with sweet sauce to eat it. Everything was disappointingly bland and barely luke warm. It was not worth paying $29.99 + $6 for the meal. It was supposed to be enough for two people but the portions weren't enough. I have been to redbones two times! My first time was underwhelming and honestly not too good. I never thought I would go back to be honest, thank goodness I did tho! The second time I went food was amazinggggg. Done quickly and amazingly!!! I made a pretty big order and they got it right, forgetting nothing, and it was all realllllly good! I like this neighborhood staple a lot. The food is solid- I enjoy all of their ribs even though they sell out sometimes, I love the fried chicken and briskets. Even the sides, mac'n cheese, coleslaw, are fresh and good tasting. The price is very reasonable for Davis Sq. and quite a bit cheaper than restaurants in the area. I'm from Memphis, TN and we are known for our bbq and sweet tea..I've been in Mass about a year and half and so far this has been the only bbq place that I've really liked. The ribs taste true to home and the sweet tea is amazing. You can't really find sweet tea up here, or at least I haven't. It's sort of cheesy they serve it in mason jars but not so cheesy I hate it haha. I've been to Redbones several times, first time eating the Memphis style ribs with sweet bbq sauce. Second time I tried the fried catfish (a personal fave back home) We've also tried some of their appetizers...the corn fritters are really yummy, while we don't put syrup on them back home it's a nice touch. We've also had the fried okra (another personal fave from home) and hush puppies. I haven't tried Blue Ribbon yet and people keep telling me to go there but my boyfriend (he's from here but he's had real Memphis bbq before) LOOOOVE Redbones! read more

I wish there was a way to rate this restaurant with no stars because it certainly doesn't even deserve one. I met three friends for dinner the other night, and off hand, I can't think of a worse restaurant experience I've ever had. The food , served late and luke-cool on a cardboard tray, was okay, but just barely. But it certainly did not "pair well" with the glass of Cabernet I ordered, served ice-cold in a can. And it was expensive, with hardly any options for smaller orders for those who didn't want giant portions of overpriced slop. But what made this place intolerable was the inability of anyone on the staff to deal with any of our basic requests. We ate inside and downstairs, but there were no signs or any indication that servers couldn't deliver food down there. A simple explanation of this from the guy who seemed to be our server would have prevented many problems, but mysteriously he never fessed up. A major screw-up with the final tab was our unpleasant farewell to what once was, years ago, one of our favorite places to dine and hang out. read more

It's the best BBQ I have had in good ole New England. Pulled Pork sammiches for days, fried okra, delicious biscuits and corn bread all at a very reasonable bill. PLUS, a killer beer list. Hit the upstairs bar, and spin the wheel for a chance to try a beer you've never tried before. The reason Redbones gets 5 stars, is the ambiance and experience of eating here as well as the friendly attitude of the staff. On a date? Meeting a friend or a coworker for drinks? Head down to Underbones on the basement level! The artwork, the lighting, the music, the friendly staff all make this place one of my favorite establishments in Davis. Totally unpretentious and laid back. Often forgotten about as it's off the main roads a bit. Did you just see a good movie at Somerville Theater? Head on over for an after movie cocktail. True story. My wife and I shared a day off, and so decided to get lunch after running a few errands. We had thought of some great places to go, but then I recalled that it would behoove us to explore Davis Square, as a number of fine restaurants had gone up. As soon as we parked, the aroma hit us. We searched literally by smelling our way, finally to land at Redbones. We shared a barbecue belt, sides of BBQ beans and onion rings, and we started with corn fritters and fried okra. Now, I'm no Southerner, so what I say must be understood as a Northerner's accolade, but the food was tremendous. I have eaten BBQ in Austin, St. Louis, KC (Gates), Puerto Rico, and Kentucky (Mike's in Lexington), and this restaurant comes damn near close, if not better, than many of them. Redbones's interior matches both midwestern and southern aesthetics, blending comfort and music. Waitstaff: very friendly and unassuming. Kind of southern, too. This is absolutely the worst BBQ I ever had!! I ordered a combo dish of Texas beef rib and beef brisket because it was the first time I dined in. For the ribs, they just gave me two pieces of the extremely dry (drier than some beef jerky) and rubbery ribs with almost no meat on them. The brisket was not juicy at all. I love just about everything at Redbones - except the host service. The food and drink options make any wait worth it (and that's saying something coming from someone who hates waiting in a long line for food), but during my last visit, the hostess said upon check-in that it would be about 45 minutes. After an hour, my boyfriend checked back with her and she said there were still 15 people in front of us on the list. I understand that it gets packed on a Saturday night, but the estimated wait time should reflect that. It ended up being an hour and a half before we managed to snag two seats at the end of the bar downstairs (Underbones). We spent another half hour waiting for our food to arrive, and you'd better believe we attacked it once it was in front of us! At the end of the day, we had a great meal and great drinks (thanks to the bartenders downstairs who were soo courteous and friendly!), but the hosting skills really leave something to be desired. read more

The place does look old and dirty and I can't stand the hippie atmosphere in the basement but besides that the food and prices are great. I love getting the dinner special with meat, two sides and cornbread. Best thing to do is get mac and cheese and smother them in bbq sauce.The brisket is great you can taste the Smokey flavors and it melts in your mouth. The food here was way better than I expected for the location. We ordered the pulled pork, Mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and roasted veggies. All of the sides were all we could ask for. Mashed potatoes were not too mashed and even still had a few chunks of potatoes (just how I like it). It was paired perfectly with a gravy that complemented the potatoes with the perfect amount of salt. The mac and cheese was beautifully creamy and was clearly made fresh. I didn't try the roasted veggies but my partner said they were perfectly seasoned! The meat was so juicy and flavorful. You were able to pick the bbq sauce that worked best for you (sweet or spicy)! We went with the pulled pork and it was definitely worth a good choice! We rounded out our visit by ordering banana pudding and some beignets to go. The beignets are definitely better fresh, but we're alright even after sitting in the bag for an hour. The banana pudding came with homemade whipped cream and was delicious! The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because of the service. The server seemed annoyed by some of our questions and rushed us to order. I've always thought the BBQ was pretty good, worth the high price. I don't know if they hired a new chef or are trying to cut costs or what but the food tonight was just BAD BAD BAD. I accompanied a bbq enthusiast friend to Redbones after complaining about a lack of good 'cue options in the Boston area. Thus far, Redbones is probably the best barbecue I've had in the city. I had the brisket plate and specifically asked for burnt ends, which they provided. They were served dry and I used the table sauce to flavor things to my liking. On its own, though, the brisket was excellent. Tender, moist, extremely smoky, with a nice thick bark of char providing excellent flavor and a nice bit of crunch/chew. The pit beans were a great side and the collard greens were pretty boring, but I doubt anyone really cares. I was a skeptic, but Redbones proves that there are some places in the Boston area that understand barbecue. It's not the best I've ever had, but the best I've had in Boston. The staff was awesome....very attentive and very pleasant. Great menu options but I was craving ribs. I got the 1/2 rack of Memphis ribs with 2 sides. Hand cut french fries and baked beans. Recently made a reservation for 6 through an online service that awards points for reservations. We showed up on time, were seated, ate, paid, and left. The next day I received notice that the restaurant had "cancelled' the reservation. I called the restaurant, spoke to a "manager", provide details proving that we had been there, and was promised that the credit for the reservation would be restored. Three weeks later, nothing has happened. It was also the case that the entree I had been looking forward to was"sold out" (at 7 PM on a Friday night). I find this poor customer service consistent with previous history. I haven't lived near the restaurant for a few years, but when I did I tried placing take out orders, and twice when I got hoe there was at least one side item missing from the order. read more
