i've been going here since it was located around the corner. since then, i've had a wide variety of experiences. they can be very neighborly and attentive, but also dismissive and snarky. which is fine, i get it, they deal in customer service and it can be frustrating. however, the last time i went in was the last time i'm going in. i brought my bike in on a tuesday afternoon around 3pm. a chain link had snapped. so had the front derailleur cable. the female owner of the establishment greeted me kindly at the door. i explained the situation and asked if they could fix it that day (they're open until 8pm) she said they were short a bike mechanic and very backed up. too busy to fix it or give me a quote. unfortunately, they're closed on wednesday so this meant i wouldn't have my bike back until thursday afternoon. i requested they call me with an estimate before working on the bike. i also explained that it was just the quick link on the chain that had snapped and that i'd prefer they replace it, rather than the entire chain. she said they'd see if they could. ok wednesday passes. thursday i get a call. it's gonna be $60 plus tax i know i'm being overcharged but ask for the breakdown anyway. one chain= $20 labor=$10 one cable= $10 labor=$20 i don't really feel like getting ripped off or engaging in a debate as to why they have to replace the entire chain so i say, ok thanks, don't fix it, i'll come by later today and pick it up. fine. fine. i pick up my bike. female owner asks me why i'm not having them finish the job. because the other place around the corner and down the street is going to do it for half the price. she looks disappointed but also pissed off at me for having the warewithal to call another shop and compare prices/services. well i wish you would have told us you were looking somewhere else. i did, on the phone. i really wanted to give them my biz but how can i when they're charging me double for the same job. do you mind if i ask you where you're taking it? recycle a bike. oh, well i'm happy to give them the business but i'm just annoyed b/c the bike sat here for 2 days taking up space. you were closed wed. actually we had an event oh did you? and that is relevant to my situation how? is it worth losing a customer who lives across the street over $60? was the bike really taking up that much space? also, why didn't you just replace the quick link? that would have been the right thing to do. then we wouldn't even be having this conversation. and i'd be back, again and again. i wheeled my bike out the door, dismayed. her annoyance palpable but at what? overcharging me and being called out on it? losing a $60 sale? who knows. who cares. obviously i'll never be back. they don't want me anyway. not unless i'm wiling to be overcharged.

I had a bike fit done last year, not by Red Beard, and knew things had changed as my riding matured. Also because it was getting colder and my spins on the trainer with Zwift were getting painful. My lower back and shoulders were getting tight after each ride and I was getting some numbness as well, which is never good. So I reached out to Red Beard to schedule a fit. They day had come and I met Ilya at the shop and we walked across the street to the fit studio. We sat and talked...for a while. For a good hour plus we talked about how I got into cycling, what I like about it, how it felt mentally and physically, what my goals were, what else I do besides cycling, what sports I played as a kid, any surgeries or injuries I've had, my job, and life in general. It was a bike therapy session, he scratched a lot of notes as he was getting inside my head as it related to cycling. He had me stand up, checked my posture, asked to do a few balance positions, took some measurements and then it was time to get on the Retul bike and start spinning. Ilya started making adjustments, some gradual and some extreme, he measured, took pictures and video, walked around me studying every move and angle, making faces like a mad scientist working several calculations all at once in his head. We changed seats, measured some more, changed seats back, swapped out with some others to try a few more. He paced about some more studying me, analyzing the pictures and video, took some more measurements and made some final adjustments. The slight grin that emerged told me he was happy with the results. He showed me the pictures of how my posture on the bike was before and after, on the bar, the hoods and in the drops and explained what he was working to achieve. We had shifted my whole geometry on the bike. He took down all the measurements he needed and we headed back to the shop to translate them onto my bike. He changed the stem, gave me a new saddle to try and confirmed measurements as his staff inspected the bike and got it ready for the ride home. It's a few rides later on the trainer with the new setup and it has been great. I am much more comfortable on the bike, no pains or numbness and can ride much longer on the trainer trouble free. I will report back in a few weeks after I settle in to the new fit and see if we need to make any adjustments. Not only is Ilya a damn good bike fitter, he is a super nice guy, very knowledgeable and meticulous in his work. The shop is nicely setup and has friendly staff, no bike snobbery, just people that like bikes. So do you need a bike fit? I know a lot of people say to just go by how it feels, but there's much more to it than that. There's a science to it and geometry that matters that you are unlikely to get right by playing around making adjustments on your own. Ultimately it's really up to you, but if you're someone that has the riding addiction and trains several times a week or are trying to reach some personal best I would encourage you to get a fit done. It will help you achieve the balance of comfort and performance you need to reach your goals.

Ilya answered all of my questions completely and was quick to offer two very high end bicycles for test rides.

On my Giant, they found a backwards jockey wheel, but I was also charged for derailleur adjustments multiple times and later learned the actual front shifting issue was a bent chainring. At one point it was suggested that I might not be shifting correctly, but the problem turned out to be mechanical. They also adjusted my saddle and stripped the bolt in the process. After multiple visits and additional issues, I lost confidence in the quality and completeness of the work.

Instead of helping, he gave me attitude and sarcastically asked, "What's 700C?" Before I could answer, I clarified my tire is 27 1/4. He then rattled off a bunch of other sizes before finally going to the back to get one. When he returned, he handed me a single tube, priced at $10. I asked if there were other brands or options, and again, more attitude. He told me it's all rubber anyway and questioned why I even cared. At checkout, I gave him cash and asked if he needed anything else. He said I owed him 88 cents, so I gave him a dollar, and he threw the change into my hand so carelessly that it bounced off and fell onto the counter. No apology, no decency. Do yourself a favor: skip this place. There are plenty of other bike shops where the staff will treat you with basic respect, actually help you, and not act like you're bothering them by being there.

I was all set to purchase, but the mechanic (I believe Luis) had me get on the bike and said I needed to size down. Unfortunately, for one of his builds, I did use them to get some components that I couldn't source other places and around every corner they drop the ball. We were not notified that parts were on backorder, even though it said when I ordered that they were in stock and would ship within a few days. Another part they ordered the wrong size and along this process, they never let us know what was going on. I had to call to find out why I hadn't received something in a couple weeks and then again to figure out where his stem was. They never returned our calls, which meant I had to take extra time out of my day to call back numerous times. It is unfortunate that they are such a large distributor of Colnago bikes. There's no way I'm going to support this place again. They don't deserve my money and I'm upset about the thousands of dollars I've spent there thus far. It won't happen again.
