After hearing many good recommendations for this place, I finally got to try it on Sunday. Red Stripe is definitely a must-go in Providence, especially if you go to college here. I ordered the Red Stripe eggs Benedict, and my boyfriend ordered the Red Stripe moules & frites. I have to say that the eggs Benedict was not worth the $14, yet it was still really delicious. It was two fluffy and perfectly poached eggs sitting atop salty prosciutto, sweet and tangy cooked tomato, and crunchy English muffins, smothered in a rich but thin hollandaise sauce. It also came with a side of crunchy, hearty, well-seasoned home fries that were amazing dipped in the hollandaise. My boyfriend's mussels, on the other hand, seemed like a fantastic deal for $12. He got a load of delicious, tender, perfectly cooked mussels swimming in a golden, savory broth as well as a cylinder of thin, crisp frites and aioli. We shared the two dishes and left full-to-bursting. Pro-tip: dip fries in egg yolk! The service was fast and friendly, and the decor is definitely unique. With so many incredible places to dine in Providence, it's always a slight bummer when you happen upon a "just average" spot. My fiance and I ate at Red Stripe last weekend and were happy to snag a table in the packed restaurant with just a few minutes wait. I will say that although it was graduation weekend for a few colleges/universities and the place was busy, our service was spot on. We started with a plate of buttermilk fried chicken and polenta frites with honey beer mustard, which were probably the best part of the meal. Salty, savory, and altogether irresistible. I went light for dinner with a chopped salad with charred red onion vinaigrette and Nick had the duck confit due (leg and crispy duck roulades) with baluga lentils, arugula & piccalilli. I still can't quite put my finger on it but nothing jumped out at me as completely delicious and worth the price. Overall, fine, but nothing to rave about. If you're in the mood for mounds of food made without any finesse, this is your kind of place. And for loads of local diners, it seems to be just that. Maybe the burgers are OK? But I never tried one and have never had a satisfying meal there. I dined at Red Stripe a couple of times several years ago, concluded that the management and chefs had a "kitchen sink" approach to food preparation, and decided I didn't need to go back. I returned tonight only because my companion suggested it, and because I was curious about whether the food had improved. Turns out the pile-it-all-on mentality still prevails. The menu is wildly varied and overstuffed (usually a bad sign), and each dish is crammed with an assortment of ingredients and flavors that don't necessarily coalesce into a delicious whole. It feels like a strenuous bid to be interesting and classy that just doesn't pan out. Tonight's salmon was served atop a mountain of orzo glommed together with cream, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes, the latter overwhelming every other flavor in the dish. It was a cloying, sweet-tart, starch and fat bomb. I left a lot of it on the plate and still felt both uncomfortably full and unsatisfied afterwards. I don't care what you say, I completely and utterly approve of a menu that is grouped by protein and has cute little pictures of each as the heading. Especially when there is an entire egg section and it isn't your typical breakfast-only omelette. I loved the bread, loved my entree, and the busy atmosphere and open windows on a summer night and loved that it was in walking distance of my house. I didn't love throwing my wine on the family next to me, but at least it was only a half bottle I wasted? This is probably the first place I would recommend to friends and family who are in the area. Went with my family, my brother's family, and my parents. Full brunch menu. Well executed in typical Red Stripe fashion. All good. So, we made a reservation for mothers day again this year. Went with my family and parents. Upon arrival (NOT when making reservations), we were informed it was a buffet at $32 pp. And, honestly, it really sucked. A third of the items were empty and not replenished during "prime time" (10a), with scrambled egg crumbs, no bacon, brick-like french toast, greasy grilled cheese, and on and on. Honestly, a Holiday Inn Express buffet breakfast would compete (and win) -- after all, at least it's hot and empty items are replenished in a timely manner. To mgmt: you run a great establishment. So, if you're going to change from a full menu on mothers day to a buffet, at least inform folks when making reservations (esp since we were expecting the full menu same as the year before) AND make it worthwhile. Came here with my girlfriend on a Tues night and was seated right away. From the outside, the street was quiet but inside, the restaurant was bustling. Waiter was very attentive and friendly. I'd give this a 4.5 stars but there's no half stars here. Grilled cheese - Made with prosciutto, pear and pesto. The blend of flavors definitely was refreshing and reminded me of the Thanksgiving holiday. The bread was perfectly crisp due to high amounts of brushed butter. Clam chowder - The highlight of our night, not canned! It was filled with clams, corn, peas. Not too thick but not watery either. Solid soup. Mussels - Huge pieces and decent sauce. I got the saffron sauce and it was just average for me. Not too flavorful. I'd try some other sauce next time. Truffled fries - Tasty but a bit salty. A last minute change led me to the Red Stripe. Reviews looked good, so in I went! Several staff walked right past me, not saying a word, until finally a woman came to seat me. Party of 1! So where did she sit me? Waaaaayyyyyyy in the back up against a wall and near the kitchen entrance. Guess having single diners is bad for their reputation or something. The waiter always seemed like I was an inconvenience given his dismissive demeanor every time he came to my table; often looking around as he spoke to me. And every waiter that had to walk by me as I ate alone in the corner, stared at me. It was quite uncomfortable. I first ordered the cheese - charcuterie plate. It was a total waste of money. There were literally only two tiny pieces of cheese, for a "cheese plate", that was extremely disappointing. Had I been dining with another person, they would've been SOL! I was charged for a 2 person serving, when clearly this is a single serving! It also had some small amounts of pate, olives, cranberry compote, mustard and crostini bread. There was too much mustard and compote for the measly amount of food I had to accompany it. For my cocktail, I ordered the cranberry mule. It was definitely delicious! Then I ordered the prosciutto and pear grilled cheese with tomato soup. The soup was a little spicy but very tasty. The grilled cheese, however, was severely lacking in cheese. After the two tiny pieces I got with my cheese plate, I can only assume that there must be a cheese shortage here. The sandwich was very greasy. Had they at least used butter to grill it with, it would have given it some much needed flavor. It sounded so delicious in theory, but they failed to execute it. Being extremely hungry, verging on hangary, and dipping it into the soup was the only thing that saved me from sending it back. For dessert... Hey, just because I was dining alone, does not mean I shouldn't end my meal with something sweet! I ordered the chocolate hazelnut pudding (it was called something else but I can't recall it). I was so pleased at the amazing service we got here!! My Mom planned a dinner in the private room for our entire family after a funeral. It had the potential to be stressful or emotional but it was a WONDERFUL celebration of life for my grandmother and exactly what she would have wanted: lots of wine, great food and laughter! Michelle was our server and she went OUT OF HER WAY to make sure our experience was stellar. I can't say enough about her thoughtful gestures (flowers on the table, giving us all condolences, remembering dietary needs...). THANK YOU, MICHELLE! The private room was also GREAT- it was small enough to be intimate but big enough for us to be able to circulate around and talk with each other while waiting for our food. I had the sole and the mussels- my dad and I shared! Michelle made sure the meals came out split already and they were both delicious. The sole was flaky, perfectly cooked and almost melted in our mouth. It came with a souffle of sorts that was complimentary to the fish! I've had their mussels before and they really never disappoint! Truffle fries and brussel sprouts were great starters for our table. Brunch at Red Stripe was a gluttonous affair (though it didn't have to be). I always have trouble deciding between savory and sweet fare, so I usually get both, resulting in a post brunch food coma. Luckily for me, Charlie C. is just as much a glutton as I am, and was willing to split the Bread Pudding French Toast in addition to the eggs benedict and BBQ pulled pork hash we ordered for ourselves. Our entrees were great and heartily portioned, but the french toast was a bit of a let down. Bread pudding is practically my favorite thing in the world, so I was a little disappointed when it was basically just a dense hunk of bread on a plate doused in syrup. It really needed something (blueberries, nuts, chocolate chips, ANYTHING) to brighten it up. Service was sloooow, but friendly. Our table was tucked in a corner where I was ass-bumped in the back of the head about 300 times by customers trying to get by. I'd suggest the staff space out the tables a bit. If you read any other reviews on this restaurant you will already know that the broth is so tasty. It was a pretty big portion too. I was expect more of a cup but oh no, it was more like a bowl. So come hungry! For our main courses I got the moules and frites which are only $10 on Mondays! Come for Mussel Monday! I extremely recommend it because they have so many different sauces to choose from and are big and plump. My boyfriend and his friend got the chicken parmesan and it was what they expected but HUGE! Seriously they have two filling meals on that plate. You are going to have leftovers! My friend got the Pappardelle Bolognese and literally licked the plate clean. She did not get a appetizer though. The rest of us had leftovers. For dessert my boyfriend and me got the brownie our waitress recommended which had candied nuts, whipped cream, and vanilla ice cream. The brownie was rich but not overly sweet like usual brownies. It had more of a dark chocolate taste. All four of us honestly could of shared the brownie dessert. My friend and her boyfriend got the flourless chocolate cake which was a lot smaller than ours for the same price but their cake had good texture. It also came with coffee ice cream and coffee tuile. We had excellent service throughout the whole 3 hours we were there (Not because the food took forever but we were talking a lot). I usually love this place. I had not been there since the Covid-19, so today I ordered a lobster roll online for curbside delivery - which worked great. When I opened the lobster roll it looked huge and delicious. But this is what I found as I attempted to eat it: the roll was sort of fat so though it looked like a generous portion of lobster, it was a lot of bread which was not soft at all (perhaps brioche type) - very bready which breaks apart when you try to eat it (I have also noticed this with their hamburger rolls). A lot of the lobster meat was not prime - It included a lot of the small claw tips and tips of the larger claw which are always thin and dry and not at all succulent like the tail and claw meat. There was even intact meat from some legs. There was not much mayonnaise but I could easily remedy that. The fries were delicious though. So I will continue to go there but steer clear of the lobster roll which was very disappointing for $25 read more

Now added to my list of favorite places! Everything was wonderful! Our server Dan was attentive, courteous, funny and handsome! Our first round of sangria was a little weak, but the second round tasted much more like what I expected. I didn't get an app, but my friend got the deviled eggs and liked them. I enjoyed the warm crispy bread and melty butter. For dinner my friend ordered the steak frites and it was super yummy, I even tried some and was impressed! I ordered the salmon dish with pureed sweet potato and brussel sprouts and I cleaned my plate! For dessert we split the chocolate mousse since it was one of few gluten free options. It was so scrumptious! What I love about this spot is that there is something for everyone and every price range. I could have just as easily ordered off the appetizer menu for my meal. The burgers sound AMAZING and i'll definitely be back to try the truffle burger! One thing I will say is when we walked in at 5:15 on a Friday they were pretty open but asked if we had a reservation (for 2 of us). So something you might want to consider. I'm a huge fan of Red Stripe. My boyfriend and I live very close by and we probably end up eating here once every month to 2 months or so. It's our go-to spot for times when we can't decide what we want to eat but definitely want a nice, but not stuffy meal. Their menu really has something for everybody, and the space is very warm and festive. Just like a brasserie should be! There are a handful of reviews here saying they've encountered just so-so food, but I have to say... this hasn't ever happened to me at Red Stripe! Everything has been delicious and I'm judging that mindfully against all the other wonderful restaurants in Providence. Maybe we've just chosen what we've ordered really well, so here is a list of the things we've enjoyed: -the Steak Frites -the bouillabaisse soup -the brick chicken with lavender polenta -the moules -the fish and chips -the scallops with risotto -the short ribs with mashed potatoes -the BLT -the crab cake appetizer All of the above have been fantastic dishes, particularly the bouillabaisse. We finally tried it recently and it was just outstanding. It was a very good value because the bowl came absolutely loaded with seafood (the bowl seemed bottomless!) in a complex, tasty broth. I think it might be my new regular. The only thing that hasn't been quite as great are the desserts, with the exception of the creme brulée, which is always good. Basically Red Stripe is perfect for many occasions, from a casual night out to a first date, to dinner with parents visiting college students. My wife and I were traveling through the East Side of Providence the other night and were looking for a place to grab dinner. I pulled out my Yelp app and up popped Red Stripe. There were over 250 reviews with an average score of 4 stars so I switched over to OpenTable and snagged a last minute reservation. We walked into the restaurant around 7:15pm on a Thursday night and the place was hopping. The two bartenders behind the pear along the left side of the room were in full swing and the area was standing room only. To us, this was a good indicator that we'd chosen well. Unfortunately, when it came to the food, we had not chosen well. But I'll get to that later. We were seated after 15 minutes, right on time for the reservation. The room has seats next the the window on the right side, close to the open air kitchen. Bistro tables run the length of the room between the bar and the kitchen. We were seated at a red leather bankers table along the back wall. Shortly after being seated, a terrific and attentive waiter stopped by and took our order. We selected a very reasonably priced Bordeaux for our beverage. My wife opted for the margherita pizza and I'm always a sucker for shepherd's pie when I find it on a menu, so I selected that. I should have been tipped off when I noticed everyone at the bar eating burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches. The wine was delicious but the food did not fare as well. First off, the shepherd's pie arrived in a hot iron skillet. As I dug in, I realized that 4/5 of the dish consisted of mashed potatoes. When I finally reached the meat mixture, it was disappointingly dry and rather bland. No moisture in a shepherds pie is an absolute fail in my book. My wife's pizza was covered in a greasy film and the crust was noticeably soggy. Perhaps we have become too spoiled from our pizza experiences at Figidini's, Al Forno and Bob & Timmy's. In any event, we were very underwhelmed by the food despite the great service and energetic room. The waiter seemed surprised that we didn't want to take the remaining food to-go. Red stripe has been my OG restaurant for so long now. The prices are so affordable and the food is great.

Went here for dinner. My husband and I split the Asian salad which was good. Then I ordered the cod entree and he ordered a burger. When our orders came, I was handed a Cobb salad instead of the cod. Fine. I can see how they sound similar and mistakes happen. I told the waiter right away and ate the fries off my husband's plate as I waited. It wasn't a big deal to me. What was the big deal, was the rushed order that came as a result. When the cod plate came it was hiding under a ton of sauce. I took a bite and everything seemed to crumble and water in my mouth. It was barely solid and lacked any taste. The small potatoes on the plate also tasted watery. It was a sad looking plate of gray, brown soggy food. The cracker/bread served with it is salty. Also had the mussels which were ok but the mussels were small and tasted old with 3 in my bowl that never opened. The fries were extra greasy as well. Good solid food. A providence staple on the east side. We went with friends on a Friday night and food took a long time and service on drinks etc during the wait spotty for sure. Stopped by for lunch today after driving by Red Stripe the other day, and I am glad I did. This place was casual but had white cloth on the tables. The food reflected the decor: High quality casual food including steaks, chicken, and fish. My server Eric was 5 stars. Attentive and professional from beginning to end. I was debating the clam chowder or French onion soup. Chose the onion soup, it was excellent. Although I'm willing to bet the chowder would have been just as good. As me, my mother, and my father came into this restaurant, we were greeted by the hostess. She was very pretty, nice, and quick with bringing us, and many others at once to the tables. Next, we have seen adequate covid equipment through separating the tables which is a basic, but good step. The waitress quickly gave us water which was good, but the bad thing is that she didn't give straws the first time. The worst thing about this trip was when my mom and dad ordered wine. The first cup of wine that my mother got had a LIPSTICK MARK on the glass. This was horrible, because this uncleaned stain could've had disease containing germs. The second wine glass had a piece of spinach in the glass. The third wine glass, the waitress spilt some wine in accident while pouring. This is bad training and questionable hygiene protocols. I had a cocktail that was strong yet delightful, we shared the crab cakes, which were arguably some of the best we'd ever tried. We also shared the Waldorf salad, which was accompanied by a great greek yogurt vinaigrette dressing. I took my mother here for her birthday and she loved it, saying she would definitely make the trip into the city from MA again, just for the crab cakes! My favorite dish is the lemongrass mussels and frites with their delicious crusty bread on the side. I am also impressed by how often they seem to change up their menu for the season. After reading the reviews on here and perusing the menu, I could not WAIT to hit up Red Stripe. We hit a bit of a snag when the GPS took us to Angell Road (instead of Angell Street), which is, apparently, on the opposite side of Providence. OOPS. By the time we arrived - almost 30 minutes late - I needed a drink. Their sweet, smooth Riesling did the trick and with a HUGE slice of their crunchy sourdough bread, smothered with the delicious creamy butter, I was good to go. I had eaten pretty bad during the week, so I went with the "Everything But the Kitchen Sink" Chopped Salad, with grilled chicken. It was HUGE and delicious. I couldn't even finish it, but I wanted to!!! My husband got the Roasted Half Chicken, which he devoured (the fries were too skinny for me, but were very tasty!). Our friends got the Bolognese and a special Beet Salad - they raved about theirs too. It seems like an upscale place, but they have pretty decent prices and there were a TON of college kids there dressed very casually. So you know it can't be TOO upscale!! For 4 people, with several drinks, it came out to a less than $150, which to me isn't bad! I like that they have a special "Late Lunch" menu. Tasted several other dishes on the menu but wasn't blown away by anything of them. Generally on the blander side. Not bad but also not memorable. In terms of ambiance, it's lively at best and too loud at worst-- a good all around space for a lunch meeting or a family dinner, but it's not easy to settle in and catch up with a friend when it's especially busy. I write this review after many visits to Red Stripe so my experience is not the 'One-off' experience and feedback. For years Red Stripe in Wayland Square has been my weekend 'go-to' for lunch. Lately, it has become a place I go to for dinner during the summer months. The food is always fresh, and the bar service is exceptional. The bartender Stephanie is one of the most attentive bar staff I have ever had the pleasure of being served by. Accompanying her at the restaurant in the kitchen is her husband Ben who previously worked at Chez Pascal (Providence, RI). He is a nice addition to the kitchen and his influence can be tasted in the upgrades to the menu. The rest of the staff are also good. I typically go in for a weekend lunch and again try to stay ahead of the crowd. Given that the restaurant serves the East Side of Providence and residents with disposable income, it can get busy. This is a place where I have a set ritual and generally eat 2-3 items off the menu. I can't judge the other items so any comments I make are restricted to what I've eaten. I usually start with a Rob Roy as opposed to a Manhattan because Stephanie does such a good job making the cocktail - using Luxardo Maraschino cherries rather than the chemically-laden neon red-dyed cherries. I often order the (gluten-free) Deviled Eggs with truffle, bacon, and chives as my small plate appetizer. I then order the Steak Frites with the bordelaise butter. This meal is my version of steak and eggs. I eat red meat once a week at most and red Strip is one of two places I elect to do so. My meal is always at the correct temperature and flavorful. When I am there for dinner, my meal of choice is the Lemon Rosemary 1/2 Chicken. This is served with a serving of a sauce for the chicken which elevates the taste of the bird. Not sure what's in it, but it's good. My preference to accompany the chicken is the greens which are also prepared well and fresh and are not over-dressed. The other dish I've tried is the Linguine & Clams which I generally only have during the summer months. It's filled with clams and hydrated well with an adequate amount of white wine butter sauce. My one desire in this dish is I wish it had more garlic - but that is a personal preference that I suspect is hard for the kitchen to meet for every customer. Again, I eat on the early side of the dinner and lunch hours so that I catch the kitchen and wait staff at a time when they are not overburdened with demanding customers. I am not sure how my experience would change if I went at other times. There are a lot of tables in the front dining area and reducing the number of tables would make the space feel less crowded and easier for customers and staff to navigate. Really nice service- cute space inside. Everyone who works at Red Stripe is so nice that it makes it worthwhile to go there for a sweet server! I had the famous grilled cheese- it was pretty good, but i didn't love the texas toast. It was tasty on a rainy day, but not mind blowing. The beet salad was tasty too- a little heavy on the dressing side, but tasty for sure. Next time maybe i'll try a steak- those looked freakin' fantastic. read more

My first time at Red Stripe was definitely one of the most delicious meals I've ever had, but the service could have been a little better. We got there around 1:30PM for lunch and we were immediately seated in a nearly-empty restaurant. It took about 15 minutes for a waiter to come see us, and the service continued on that path for the entire visit, resulting in quite the lengthy lunch. The food definitely made up for it though. I had the Steak Frites with perfectly cooked hanger steak and the most amazing fries I've ever had in my life. I didn't know it came with a salad, and it was okay, but there was a strong mustard-y dressing on it that got on a lot of my steak (which was on top of it), that did not go well with the Gorgonzola butter. Every time I come here it's great. I've never ever had a bad experience here. And I live close so that says a lot. One of the things about this place that just kills me is that you can smell it no matter where you are in Wayland Square. It just sort of beckons you to arrive at it's doors and come right inside and be fed. That being said, you have to be in the mood for heavy food I think to come here. I would never come here for a "light lunch" or even a "light breakfast" for that matter. I've eaten a lot of the things on this menu including their breakfast/brunch. All the dishes here have been delicious. If people come from out of town or ask what's good in the area I definitely recommend Red Stripe. read more

Had no idea they had a restaurant. Found this place through Yelp and I was amazed how awesome the food was especially for reasonable prices. They had $3 Red Stripes on the day I came in which was today. Not sure if they do that everyday. I ordered the Duo of Duck Confit and man it was delectable. The flavors blended together so well. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was amazed. The portions were rationalized well so I was very satisfied after I left. The bartender was a sweetheart. Highly attentive and had a great smile. I was pleased with my visit to this restaurant. It deserves a bookmark. If I ever make it back to RI I will surely pay a visit. read more

I hardly feel compelled to write an updated review but today Red Stripe has been demoted from 4 to 2 stars. I feel that after my experience here today I will not be eating here again. After my initial visit in 2014, I decided to give the restaurant another try. There were tons of people here so we felt that the quality of food must have at least stayed the same if not improved. The menu was very familiar and does not appear to have changed in the last 3 years. Tonight we ordered the mushroom pizza, french onion soup, beef stroganoff and the gnocchi. The mushroom pizza was otherwise a great pizza but was overly sweet with the glaze of honey on top. The honey simply overpowered the dish. I might recommend reducing the amount or eliminating the honey all together. The beef stroganoff was an extreme disappointment. The sauce was watery and underseasoned. I will say that the pasta itself was well made but there was not enough seasoning. The gnocchi on the other hand was over seasoned and required multiple cups of water before you could complete the dish. I think the only done well tonight were the fries. Parmesan truffle fries which were delicious and possibly the only saving grace during dinner. The service also was strangely poor tonight as well. Our waiter was seemingly uninterested in our experience. Plates were plopped in front of us and people promptly walked away. When told about our disappointment in the stroganoff dish, there was no acknowledgement. The only thing that came quickly to us was the bill. As you'll see with my reviews, I try to provide some constructive criticism. I just didn't feel that those working here at Red Stripe had a vested interest in ensuring people would enjoy their food. There are tons of restaurants here in Providence where people take the time to explain the foods that they offer and take pride in their patrons enjoyment. Red Stripe was not one of them. read more
