Unfortunately was not able to dine there today. We had reservations for a party of twelve. They could initially only accommodate 6 upon arrival. Then they could seat all twelve in groups of six about twenty feet apart. There were tables that could have been pulled together but the manager refused. The seats at our table were dirty. When asked to exchange or clean the chairs we got a ton of attitude and then she dragged a chair about thirty feet across the restaurant. Felt totally antagonized. Called the Korean BBQ restaurant (bbq chicken) around the block and asked if they could accommodate 12 hungry patrons who were having a horrible experience around the corner and they graciously took care of our entire party--moving tables and chairs as well. Dining here on 2/28 at the chef's recommendation, I thought I would be in for a gastronomic experience that rivaled the best restaurants the city has to offer. I, sadly, was not thrilled and was less than impressed. I ordered the Cubano (their take on the classic Cuban sandwich). While the overall appearance of the dish looked fairly intact, it lacked a lot in spice, seasoning, flavor, and well just taste overall. The pork on the sandwich was drier than dry, I only had a hint of mustard, no pickles on the sandwich (however they were on the side... and next to the fries, were the best part of the meal). My dinner companion ordered pulled pork street tacos. They must have used the same pork for her tacos, because again, they were DRY! They appeared to offer much more flavor than they actually did. I expected the food to knock my socks off, having heard all the wonderful things form the chef about all the fresh, farm-to-table, & locally sourced ingredients. Plus the fact that the chef brought our food to us, instead of the server, really led me to believe that this meal was going to be more than worth the almost $45 price tag for an entree and starter item. Unfortunately, it's just like any other hotel restaurant that's out there. Looks can be deceiving, and the Red Roost Tavern definitely fits into that category... If you're in the city for the evening, you're better off finding a restaurant that everyone is raving about and clamoring to get in to. Tucked away in a sizeable corner of the Hyatt Hotel - but with an additional separate entrance on Elm Street - we have walked past this place probably a hundred or more times in recent months without even giving it a second thought as somewhere we could try to eat at. Ignorance be my name! Hell, I'd never even wandered in the Hyatt's front door to see the high glass topped atrium everyone kept telling me about, so why would I venture into a restaurant that appears to keep itself something of a secret? Sorry RRT, but your signage is underwhelming. However, an inclusion in Cincinnati's "$5 Burger Week" has changed all of that... "Woah..... is THIS what it looks like inside??? Gently, and with a chainsaw please hun" I whispered to the missus as we were ushered to our window lit high top with a good view of the bar and most of the other diners and drinkers. "Damn," I said to the wife "THAT'S the service we've been missing out on?" as our terrific server not only asked exactly the right questions but also answered ours clearly and with no hesitation "BOY, that was good food!!" we exclaimed in poetic unison as the final belch of a great meal exited our gastric tubes an hour or so later. RRT prides itself in providing fresh food (sourced from local farms and suppliers) and it shows. The prices might seem a little intimidating at first, but those first few bites will have you convinced it's worth every cent. The surroundings are stylish but not overbearing and the service (for us at least) was impeccable. Their Happy Hour offerings would appear to match Kaze in terms of value for money and taste sensation.. no mean feat by itself. Can you tell we were impressed? Even better is that their menu clearly states which items are vegetarian and which items are vegan. Something which is law in much of Europe but is not legislated in the USA, with - in my mind - only the most progressive and forward thinking restaurants bothering to segregate their menu choices intelligently in this manner. We quickly agreed that this place would have proved a FAR more worthy venue to have celebrated our recent wedding anniversary at than the one we unfortunately chose where we had a disastrous experience (See my other recent reviews for the skinny on THAT awful excuse for "fine dining") Very few restaurants are worthy of my "we'll definitely be back" designation. Christmas day dinner was cancelled due to a sick relative, so my husband, brother, sister-in-law and I decided to find a place to eat out. I found reservations for Red Roost Tavern on OpenTable and had average expectations. We had a really great experience, especially considering this was our 1st Christmas Day dinner out. The staff is very friendly and our food came out really fast. Three of us had the burger and one had the prime rib. I can personally say that the burger was delicious. It was juicy, cooked perfectly to my preferred temperature, and the brioche bun complimented it well. The last burger I had was at Terry's Turf Club, and I was disappointed that it didn't live up to the hype. We learned on our way out that they do free valet if you eat at the restaurant, so we'll be doing that next time. Awesome experience over all, I highly recommend it! read more

I will not return to Red Roost Tavern. I was expecting something much different out of this place. It presents itself as an upscale farm to table restaurant that uses the best local ingredients. The decor adds to the deception as it is well contrived. I enjoyed the fact that I could see into the kitchen area and watch the 5 cooks prepare the food and the 3 managers standing around expediting the orders. Even though the place was not packed in the least. The waitress we had had a good personality, however, that is as far as my compliments can extend. One person in our party order the $33 Blue Ranch Encrusted Ribeye. The ribeye was not well marbled, the fat was not carmelized, and it was not cooked to how he had ordered it. The blue cheese crust was just melted cheese, it looked like they had just throne it on the meat at the end. Plus for a side item he was served shoe string fries, and no veg. I ordered the Cincinnati Spiced Bison Burger, which had no spices in it at all or so I thought. My wife and I were discussing it today and we realized that they had given my bison patty to her, as she had ordered a grass fed burger, which was supposed to come with bacon, but did not. Both of our burgers came with the same shoe string french fries as the ribeye, making them very reminiscent of a meal I could have gotten from steak n' shake. I don't know if the wait staff is trained not to take the drink order first, but we were told to place the food order then our drink order would be taken. Apparently the reasoning is because it takes a while for the food. It was wise advice since it took an hour and a half to get the food after we ordered, and somewhere between 20-30 minutes to get our drinks after we ordered them. This restaurant is supposed to portray the best of Cincinnati. I am glad that I have been exposed to much more of the city than this. So this is totally not the review I wanted to write. I REALLY wanted to like this place. We stopped in last week for pub crawl and it was empty, the bartender was nice and the drinks were good(expensive but good) so I was rather excited to eat here. So we arrived early for a 7:40pm dinner reservation on a Friday night. The bar area had a good crowd...not busy though. My husband and I got a few drinks at the bar while we waited for our group. While sitting at the bar, the staff was complaining, talking about how food was getting comped left and right, and a manager came over barking orders(we should have taken this as a sign!). As others have said, the decor is really neat. There is a table in the bar with reclaimed wood between glass that is impressive. Neat stone tile walls were also cool looking. The only downside is that it was pretty cold everywhere. I get that it is attached to a hotel lobby but it was cold in there. I love the use of local ingredients but to be honest, I don't believe it. The fries look frozen, some of the veg looks like it came right out of a can, and all of the meat I saw was slathered in sauce. As someone who is into wine, I was very under impressed by the wine glasses. This may seem super nit-picky, but red wine and white wine should not be served in the same glass and no matter what they should not be as small as the glasses that RRT has. Our waitress was personable but not at all what I would expect from a restaurant that is trying to be a place of fine dining. The entire staff(besides managers) were wearing jeans, not all well fitting either, and these semi-nice/semi-casual striped or checked shirts. I think they were trying to go for a casual-farm/city look and it just falls flat. Our server insisted that we place our food order first before we ordered drinks( I am guessing she knows that it takes a while for food to come out). This was a nice suggestion, but if the people who are paying want to order drinks, you shouldn't insist that we order food first and refuse to take our drink orders. I was not impressed at all with the menu. The most expensive item, a rib-eye steak, only comes with french fries...um what? If we would have got there for happy hour, those fries would have been $4 and came with three different sauces...but with dinner you pay $40 and all you get with them is cracked pepper. Our food took over an hour to get to the table( did I mention, there were only 5 tables of diners?) Before our food came out, a manager came over and apologized for the food taking so long and offered to comp 50% off of the bills(nice gesture). The food came out, it was ok. Rib-eye didn't come with a steak knife and it takes about 10 extra minutes for them to prep a steak knife, apparently! It took us asking 4 times for us to get our checks. It felt like our server was avoiding our table. The checks came and, surprise, 50% wasn't taken off. Also, the manager was nowhere to be found, our server couldn't find him, the people working the bar couldn't find him, he was MIA. We finished our food at 9:30pm, didn't get our checks until 10:30pm(did I mention that we got there a little after 7?!?) I think three hours was way too much time to spend in this place. I really wanted to like Red Roost Tavern, I just honestly believe that they weren't ready for what they were trying to do. I think they spent all of their resources on decorations & design but fell flat on execution and service. As we left, across the street was Jimmy G's. The dinner was good. I had angel hair pasta with salmon, the pasta was a bit too buttery... Wish it didn't soak in that much butter. The salmon was cooked perfectly. Overall the flavor of the dish was good. My son had grass fed rib eye steak and it was delicious!!! I wish I could eat the entire steak, but I tastes a few bites and the steak just melt in your mouth full with flavor. The service was above average. The Guinness chocolate cake is the dessert you have to get!! It's sweet and rich but you feel like you can finish the entire cake yourself!!! I have to try very hard to stop eating it. read more

I was excited to try this place out and since it was in the hotel, I thought this was my perfect opportunity! It boasts as being a farm to table place, where everything is super fresh and it may even take a little longer because of this. I didn't realize a little longer meant 35 minutes longer. My quinoa salad was good, but not fantastic, but the prices were fair and my coworker enjoyed her burger so for dinner, I would most definitely return. My big qualm was breakfast. We were slated to leave early in the morning but the valet station was pretty congested so we opted for bfast at red roost again and boy, there was no bang for your buck there. Everything seemed very "packaged" for a restaurant that speaks fresh. It was definitely not worth the $17 and next time, I'll find a panera for my morning cravings!! read more

Finally made it here after a super dooper hit Yelp event and was happy to experience a standard evening. I cannot not mention the service. The greeters are so friendly and polite, smiling from a distance, really nice. I felt welcome instantly. As a complimentary starter we got bread and butter, which was appreciated but a bit too basic. Bread was not toasted and felt stale and butter occurred to be a margarine. There is room for improvement! The smoked tomato soup with goat cheese was nice and just what I needed on this unexpectedly cold evening. The risotto was ok, a bit too much like soy sauce on rice, nothing to die for. However, my husband's salmon was amazing. All the courses are served beautifully, which is a huge plus. Seems like dishes are very unequal, some great and some would benefit from improving. The Holy Grail of the Slow Food movement is local, organic and sustainable. Red Roost lists their local suppliers on the menu and lauds itself as a 'farm forward' restaurant. This is a wonderful thing for both local farmers and customers. I ate here twice during my stay in Cincinnati and it was delicious both times. The asparagus with parmesan cheese and a fried egg was salty and delicate, the pasta light and well flavored. The second time was Salmon perfectly cooked and fried bread pudding (also perfect). Went here for lunch. Recently remodeled, nice decor, kind of hard to find in the Hyatt Hotel. The lunch menu is very appealing with lots of unique flavor combinations. You can select from salads, soups, and sandwiches but those descriptions don't really due justice to the menu items. I was between a quinoa salad with wild salmon and the bison burger with avocado, gouda, blackberry ketchup. I ended going with the bison burger. I asked for my burger medium-rare and unfortunately it came out pretty much well done which ruined it for me (someone else ordered the same thing and theirs was also well done). I must admit that the flavors were still pretty good and the burger has great potential but I couldn't get over the dryness of the meat (main reason for my 3 star rating). I will likely give this restaurant a second look, possibly for dinner. read more

I think I visited Red Roost Tavern on an off night, or maybe I just ordered wrong. We were letting yelp be our guide around downtown last Friday and we decided to stop in to try the poutine. I had been here before between a wedding ceremony and reception 2 years ago, not sure if it was the same restaurant then but it looked the same. The bar was completely full but there was plenty of seating at high tops in the bar area. They have a good selection of drinks and we just ordered draft beers. The service was prompt and attentive. The poutine was the only real disappointment on this trip. I am used to poutine being French fries with gravy, cheese, an egg and some spices on it. This was French fries in a bowl of gravy. There was so much gravy that it was almost hard to find the fries. The gravy itself tasted like it was out of a jar and left a lot to be desired in the flavor department. We were not tempted to order past this appetizer. It's possible that here are better menu options that we just did not explore. I will totally come back to Red Roost Tavern for drinks some day, but I'm not overly tempted to keep eating. read more

So the two stars really sums it up for me, "Meh, I've experienced better". The decor was lovely but to me it did not match the outfits of the wait staff. They wore flannel shirts with jeans so I got the look they were going for, but it did not do it for me. I was excited to try a new place while with friends and enjoy a lovely time laughing and drinking. Unfortunately my expectations were just too high. We were a group of 8 celebrating a friend's birthday and we had reservations for 7:40pm but did not get seated until approximately 8pm. That was fine, we all like each other so we just talked while we waited to be seated. Our server initially came over and only spoke to one side of the table leaving the other side left wondering what was going on/what was she saying (guess which side I was on). Thankfully my hearing is good but I was hoping it was wrong because I heard her telling us that she will not take our drink order until we placed our food order. What the what?!?! She then came to our end of the table and said it for us to hear. When we said we knew what we wanted to drink but needed more time to look at the menu she said she would just come back. I just think that was so rude. My friends and I were kinda sitting looking confused because we all knew we wanted to drink and did not even look at food items yet. I think we tried ordering drinks the next time she came back but she mentioned again ordering food first so we just gave in. Maybe if we were able to drink more what happened next probably would not have been so bad. It took over an hour and a half for us to get our food. No rhyme or reason, just 90 minutes to get some food. The kicker of waiting so long to get our food, is that my fries along with my husband and friend's were cold. We wanted to send them back but did not for fear that we would not see fries for another hour or so. And the burger I ordered was actually given to my husband and vice versa but because mine still had the fixings I did not notice until I asked him how was his and he answered. His burger was not seasoned whereas mine was and then our light bulb went off. I ordered the grass fed burger and it was really not worth the wait or the $14 price tag. I am all for paying extra for great quality food, I just did not feel like we received that this night. So it just wasn't the three of us who were not pleased, from our friend's expressions it did not seem like anyone was overally "wowed" by their food. Besides the wait for the food being long, the wait for the check was even longer. I think we had to ask several times for the check and initially it was wrong and thankfully it was corrected. To sum up, our waitress was no where to be seen a lot of the night which impacted the level of quality our table received. Maybe I could understand this better if it was a busy night, but it really wasn't. The reason behind me giving the two stars bis ecause the manager did give us 50% off our meals for the wait. I thought that was incredibly nice and to be honest I did not expect it. So I can say that customer service on the manager's end was commendable. read more

I had a bad waitress. I waited half an hour from the time that I sat down until she finally came over to me to ask if I would like a water. The restaurant wasn't busy. She was slow and didn't know her products very well. When I asked about the food, she tried to sell me on a Margharita flatbread pizza when I inquired about the size of the beet salad, the macaroni and the ratatouille- what were portion sizes and popular. It was like she was trying to down-sell me. The food however was pretty darn good for hotel food. I am a vegetarian so I ordered Mr. John's corn cakes with habanero butter and the Ratatouille. The corn cakes were like savory pancakes. They were cooked perfectly and had a touch of sweetness that made the habanero butter sing. The ratatouille ate like large salad. The bitter greens and citrusy dressing paired well with the stewed tomatoes and eggplant purée. The zucchini "falafel" were a bit of a let down. They gave the dish the crunch that it needed, but didn't have much flavor. A bit of minced herbs, onion, garlic, or pepper would have helped. We were seated immediately. Our drink order came quickly. The wait staff were very accommodating of our two overtired children, even going as far as to bring over a few maraschino cherries for the toddler. I had the grilled cheese of the week - oh man, that was good. Our oldest kid had the pancakes - those were killer enough to bring the leftovers home. My wife had the Buffalo Chicken Flatbread, which she polished off, which she never does. Unfortunately underwhelming... I live downtown and just needed a new option for breakfast. I looked online at the menu, which was a little dated, but still seemed like right up my alley. Primary focus: chef driven/artisanal grits options. I just enjoy me some good cheesy grits and a runny yolk egg... I figured out quickly why no one on Yelp has an updated photo of the menu.. it was promptly taken away from me as soon as I placed my order. This may seem pretty typical to most folks.. but I, personally, enjoy perusing a menu even after I've ordered, so that I may plan a next meal/craving. Immediately upon sitting, I felt like the service was rushed. I understand this is a hotel and that the average guest may need a quick meal before heading out for business stuff (and probably most often chooses the buffet option), but I did not appreciate being treated like the average guest. Why didn't I ask to keep the menu? I felt like my server wanted me to hurry up and get out. And I like to take in the experience as a while before I pass judgement. Maybe she would "wow" me later in the meal. I work in the service industry and am willing to overlook a few minor details.. For example: my table had crumbs on it. No biggie. I'll brush that off. What was a biggie was the meal. I ordered "Local Cheddar and chives" grits. I asked to add an over easy egg to it, with a side of bacon. This was after a very poor description of one of the other grits options.. She didn't "sell" it... She didn't know the menu. What I received was a bowl of plain, white, unseasoned, dry grits. It had what appeared to be grocery store shredded cheddar cheese on top in the middle. The chives were m.i.a. I also received a side plate with Two over medium eggs and four pieces of dried out bacon. Maybe I'm being picky. But this place looked fancy.. Perhaps my expectations were just too high. What happened to the "local goat cheese cheddar" on the dated menu...? That sounded legit. That's what I wanted. Not instant grits and Kroger thinly shredded cheddar. So then I have my boring grits bowl.. I decide the decaf coffee may not be enough.. I'm off today, I say to myself. My server finally walks by again.. I ask if she has anything in the way of a Sangria... "Mimosa?" she offers.. No, thank you. Once again, perhaps I'm being picky.. but you could at least try to upsell me on something other than a mimosa.. increase that check average, girl! But sadly, no.. Not even an offer to attempt to accommodate... $24 for bland, poorly executed grits, an extra egg that I didn't ask for, buffet bacon that had been sitting out, and a decaf coffee with rushed service.. Where to start...maybe it was the unopened beer bottle that we had to send back to get opened or the fact that they were out of so many things on the menu but took 20 minutes after ordering to come back to tell us and then expected us to order something new without a menu. Had to ask for that too. Drinks were never refilled or even offered. Overall just a terrible experience. read more
