Wow I can't believe I haven't been here in all of my years going to UT. This place is SO CHEAP, but the food tastes homemade and so quality. I got the classic burger and oh my god, the cheese was melty - the kind that you have to pull away after taking a bite - the mushrooms and tomatoes tasted fresh, and the meat itself was absolute perfection. I got fries as well and those were great, just classic french fries that you season to taste. The burger itself was only $7 and beat the quality of many burger places in town. They have cheap breakfast and specials daily on their menu that I will have to come back and try. Great food that doesn't break the bank. Empty except for the old man who took my order - he had a "look" and I'm sure he would make a great bit character in your Reservoir Dogs rip-off. Anyway it was just me, the old man, and the two construction workers who fired up the power tools in the dining room as soon as I had placed my order. And no. There were no "Sorry for the noise" or "construction in progress " signs and there was no apology from management. And then there's the food... I ordered eggs and French toast. It's on the menus. It's supposed to come with fruit or toast. The old man didn't ask me which I wanted. When the food arrived I got : - One plate of tasteless eggs scrambled into a solid oblong blob that looked like a 5th grader's failed science fair project and should have been served under a crudely lettered poster titled "Can you make an Amoeba using only eggs and a frying pan?" - One plate of soggy, tasteless French toast that would have embarrassed even the most seasoned of high school lunch ladies. - No toast and no fruit. Because if you are going to serve perfectly inedible food why risk screwing that up with sides that might accidentally not suck? Don't go here - unless you are shooting a Reservoir Dogs rip-off. Don't eat here - even if you only came to shoot your Reservoir Dogs rip-off. I know you are probably on a tight budget, but cater the shoot. Do not inflict this food on your cast and crew. I used to visit this place for lunch when I worked nearby around a decade ago and not much has changed. Tried to go last summer but they were closed. Thought maybe they were renovating but by the looks of my visit today, I don't think anything has really changed inside. I'd stick to the sandwiches and breakfast next time. Cool little divey diner that is apparently popular among local artist. There's lots of art from the locals on display here. Cool. Keep it in the family. So to speak. I like that these guys go free range on the beef and chicken. They have counter seating which seals the whole divey diner deal. If you opt to eat on the patio check your chair and table for bird droppings. I ordered a BLT here. It came out in adequate time, and, was pretty good. They use leaf lettuce, not bulk bags of cheap diced. Nice. My only complaint is that I would have liked a little more bacon. The burgers caught my eye here. I will definitely go back and try a cheeseburger for sure. Another positive is that they have beer and offer $1 off during HH. I never had a problem with service, but, I did witness the waitress bringing a dude a burger and fries and as she attempted to sit the plate down, she dumped some fries on him. Her response was a giggly "sorry". She walked off and never returned. He wasn't happy. For a dive, they are pretty clean. No greasy floor feel. I want to check out their breakfast/brunch here also. The Ugly: :: none. Would I go back? Sure. Even though they don't have the best breakfast food, it's terrific if you want a solitary, quiet meal, get a cup of coffee, read the paper, and relax. This place is a pigsty. I'm sorry. I usually try to write fair balanced even handed reviews that give equal attention to the strong and weak points of the places I eat. But I can't bring myself to do that for Red River Cafe. I have never eaten in a restaurant that was filthier - with the possible exception of one bus station i was trapped in in Northeastern Brazil - and that is not a standard an Austin restaurant would want to sink to. Some of the tables were so obviously greasy and stained I could not bring myself to sit at them. Dirty plates were everywhere in huge stacks, with the leavings of previous patrons meals on them. The one table I sat at that looked almost clean ...... wasn't. My hands and arms stuck to the table during much of the meal. To be fair - the restaurant did have a big help wanted sign on the front door. And yes - you eat at a restaurant with a help wanted sign - you deserve what you get. And yes - the food was not terrible (black beans in a taco, with chips out of the bag and home made salsa, with a not wonderful but not awful salad on the side.) maybe when they fill their staff quotas this place will be better. however, i really don't think the staff that was there gave a damn. yes, when understaffed you do spend a lot of time serving people food and taking orders under duress. but they had lots of time when they werent serving food or taking orders, and no one was doing much about the filthy plates or the decaying food. has a health inspector been there lately? read more

I was hesitant to go here from all of the so-so reviews, but my boyfriend convinced me that he'd eaten here before loads of times and he liked their toast a lot. So we went. I liked the quaint feel of the restaurant, and the service was great. The food was tasty, although not salted enough (this is coming from a girl who hardly ever salts *anything*). The food looked like real food, something you could make at your house, irregularly shaped and tasty (rather than that Perfect Pancake one-color-all-over omelets you get at other breakfast joints). Nice stop off 65 coming from/going to Branson. Kind of a mom-n-pop diner with daily specials. More delicious desserts than you need. We had a delicious good-quality fried chicken sandwich, fresh hand-patted hamburger steak with brown gravy, and chicken strips. All very good. I wouldn't recommend the cheese dip, mac-n-cheese (Kraft), or goulash (hamburger helper). But everything else is great! Food was fast to our table, staff were nice. read more

I'll call it a fiver for the simple facts that 1) there are options available at numerous price ranges (e.g. grilled cheese sandwich for $2.95) and 2) they are faaast. We got our omelettes in under 10mins. And hot sauce on every table is nice :) Mic was our server and noticed us immediately when we walked in, inviting us to sit wherever we wanted. I think Red River Cafe is the last neighborhood cafe in Austin to offer cheap lunches and all day breakfasts. The service has always been friendly and the tables have always been clean when I've been there, but who really cares when your entire meal comes in under five dollars? It kind of reminds me of Magnolia Cafe 10 years ago. Simple, good diner food within walking distance from the LBJ School and UT Law. read more

Service is friendly and reliable and I give props for their clear effort to give college students a job while they work their way through school. I've been here twice and both times, I felt the same way. While the prices are pretty low, you get what you pay for. The food is good but not great, and I would only come here if you're looking for brunch without the huge wait. I had the chicken fried steak today & it was alright. The gravy was quite bland and the steak itself didn't blow me away either. Everything else (eggs over easy, English muffin, and homefries) was pretty standard in terms of quality and taste compared to other places. The wait staff were friendly enough, and left us alone for the most part other than taking and bringing our orders of course. You pay at the counter, which also removes the responsibility from them to bring your check to you. The best time to go to Red River Cafe is on the weekend. Their weekend special dish of Eggs Benedict is the best in Austin(in my opinion) and I have tried many. It's cheap and so delicious!! The staff is very kind and always attentive to their customers needs and I always leave happy. The only reason I am giving this restaurant 4 starts is because I have often seen flies around the bar area and inside the restaurant. I think they could do a better job keeping those at bay but that is really my only complaint. read more
