Way over priced for what you get. The portions are very small. We had 5 girls in our group - none of which are big girls or huge eaters - and ordered almost 10 dishes. They recommend ordering at least 2 per person. Each tiny dish is priced approx like a meal. We actually joked about stopping at a drive thru on the way home to get something to eat because there was so little to eat for 5 girls. This is not at all like ordering tapas at a great restaurant in a big city, which we all love! Would love a real tapas style restaurant in the Lansing area and priced reasonably for what you actually get. This is not the place. It is also extremely loud!! Super hard to carry on any conversation when the place is full. I've eaten here 4 times now and the experience has been consistent each time. I cannot say enough good things about the meal my friends and I had at Red Haven. Service, first of all, was excellent. The menu in total was explained which allowed us to really decide on what to share. There wasn't a dish that didn't disappoint. I would say that most of the portions were larger than we expected, but we had six people so there wasn't any complaining. Presentation of the food was beautiful, and the flavors were so well thought out and surprising. It's inventive but not over the top for most people who aren't foodies. Great service. Staff was very nice and overall attentive. Food for me was hit or miss. Very disappointed in the steak, tough and stringy. Walleye was very salty, didn't even finish my portion. Chicken was very good, artichoke with it was tough. Bread with spreads very good. Presentation excellent. Small plates at entree prices. We ordered 12 of 17 items on the menu. This is my first time try this place. The food is fresh and taste very good. I came for my birthday dinner and I felt happy for those food. This place is tapas style, so they serve foods in really small size but taste delicious. The chefs working next the bar, so you can observe their cooking. The Lansing area is in sore need of a restaurant like this. The local idea provides a much needed respite from heavy cheeses, potatoes, pasta , and fried fare that is available. I appreciated the savory herb alcoholic beverages as well as the delicious dishes. We had the carpaccio salad, ravioli, cheese plate, stuffed chicken, and tempeh roast with parsnips and sweet potatoes. The flavors of everything can be described as lovely and accurately seasoned without excess. I am looking forward to my next visit and expect that it won't be too long before they expand hours or move to a new location. read more

We went there last night and the dinner and our waiter Nick were fantastic. Yes it is pricey ($50 person with dessert) but it is well worth it. Their meal consist of small plates and make sure to ask the wait staff about what they are. The combinations are unusual but tasty. I have never had greens with such a great vinaigrette, and the pork with fennel was great. As an starter, go for the Carpaccio-turnips, apples, walnuts and puff rice...sounds weird but amazing. I wanted to like this place. I support the concept of using local producers. The menu is creative, the food is unique, but unfortunately the food has little flavor. It is pretentious, overpriced, boring and unsatisfying. Yes, I know it is tapas, but the portions are small and overpriced. Did I say it is pretentious and boring? I and my son along with his friend( who had just graduated from MSU!) went to the Red Haven for mother's day brunch. We ordered the bread basket. That was excellent. My husband had the eggs benedict, my son and his friend had the mushroom quiche and I had a very interesting tofu stir fry dish that tasted like scrambled eggs. I enjoyed the tofu dish it was wonderful when there was a tomato with the tofu. There was a toasted slice of bread underneath the tofu mixture. The bread was very hard to cut. I Asked for a steak knife, it worked better. My husband liked the eggs benedict but thought that it wasn't done enough. We had an Asian pear dessert. I thought that was just okay. My son and his friend had a chocolate mousse type dessert. The portions are quite small. Not really large enough for a young man or a larger man. I was glad I ordered the bread to go along with the breakfast items. I would like to try their regular menu sometime as this was just their Mother's day brunch special. On the service side the wait staff was wonderful. We didn't make reservations but we were able to sit at the chefs counter. There was a table that sat open the entire time we ate. It would have been nice to sit at the table rather than the counter. Don't let me discourage you from trying their food. Like I said I would like to try their regular menu. read more

Found the food to be ok. The server was pretty pushy and insistent that we order only once and not as you go like in normal tapas restaurants. When we did order more because the portions were tiny, he tried to persuade us not to. But ordering dessert was apparently ok. Far overpriced for what you get. I'm from GR and you can get food that's better (and SLO) at places like Winchester, San Chez, etc for much less. Likely that I won't return. read more

The food is quite good and has variety. Its not your typical plate, it seems very well thought out and paired, and put together. The price however, is what hurts my review. Twice I have gone for happy hour food/drinks, about a year or so apart, to make the meal more affordable for myself or for two. Both times, they either wouldn't apply happy hour (5 minutes before happy hour ends I guess was too close), or an item "didn't qualify" with the other items beside it on the list - if this is the case, its something to tell the customer. I am usually between two plates or beers or drinks, and if one is half the cost of the other because a special applies ($5 vs $9), that would be something to mention, particularly after asking what the happy hour deals were that day. Overall, good food, but 2/2 times leaving with a feeling I got ripped off by the specials makes me less willing to head back in. Maybe Ill give it another go next year, but I'm certainly not jumping out of my seat to head there. read more

I had some business contacts coming in from out of state, and was looking for an appropriate place to impress them close to the MSU campus. I can't say enough amazing things about the food and service here, but will try to share some details. We went went the full tapas course for 6 people, which was basically the entire menu served to us. It was the perfect easy choice, as we didn't have to think about anything and got to try all the amazing options. At the end of almost 20 plates, we were all truly amazed at the consistent quality and uniqueness of everything that was presented from the kitchen. Not sure how they pull that amount of variety off so well on any given night, but we were all very impressed. Amazing cocktail selection as well from the bar. The attention to detail in the local ingredients, preparation, presentation, and service really shined. Thank you so much for an incredible evening, and I'd highly recommend for any business dinner, night out with friends, or any reason you can think of for great food with a relaxed atmosphere. Just got back for a birthday dinner at the Red Haven and left still hungry. I remember the early days of San Chez in GR when you could get delightful small plates for six or seven dollars. Started with appetizers, three small ravioli for nine dollars. Really? The Stilton cheese plate was very plain and not impressive. The best dish we had was the lamb. Tried the salmon and the shrimp and pork belly. The curry sauce for the salmon was delicious but a ridiculously small portion for $17.00. The shrimp and pork belly was completely forgettable. Although I am an exceptional cook, I do enjoy going out to dinner from time to time and I know how much quality food should cost. We will not be back. read more

Red Haven is easily the best place to eat in the East Lansing/Okemos area. The food is delicious and beautifully prepared from local ingredients, the atmosphere is upbeat and friendly-modern, and the staff is exceptional. I can't eat dairy or gluten and they make special accommodations for me that keep me eating safely and with great pleasure. This is a great place for a romantic date, a group outing, or a celebration -- we've used it for all three. read more

i love Red Haven as it is one of my favorite after work spots. I love the atmosphere here and the staff is lovely. The food has always been great and the drinks are on point. However, I was in this evening with one of my coworkers who I had invited out. Everything was great but there seemed to be some incident with the staff. One of the cooks exploded on one of our favorite bartenders. We were shocked at his reaction and it seemed incredibly unprofessional and made us uncomfortable. To say the least, we will not be returning. I do not feel this is how you should treat your staff. read more

Went for dinner on Mother's Day and LOVED it. Molly P. seems a bit grumpy and a itty bitty pretentious to me. As a party of 4 we had all but 2 of the smaller plates (passed on the chips plate and the cheese plate) and then ordered 3 of the larger plates. We shared everything and were completely full by the end. The food was delicious and well presented. I enjoyed being surprised by what actually came to the table because from the descriptions it is hard to tell how the ingredients will end up being put together. The egg dish, with whatever encrusted it, was by far my favorite dish this go around. Although there was a warm beet soup to start off our evening that fantastic. Our waiter was wonderful and attentive and we never felt like we had to wait very long for our "next course" even though they were extremely busy at 6:30 p.m. For some, the price might seem a bit high except when you take into account the labor intensive approach put into each plate. The freshness of the ingredients, the combination of flavors, the presentation, and the service were all fantastic. My primarily complaint is that the menu encourages sharing. This is a somewhat awkward concept for a nice restaurant close to MSU, where many dinners are likely to be meals with visiting scholars, job candidates, etc. But the concept is made more awkward by the fact that some dishes are served in ways that make sharing very, very difficulty/awkward. Some dishes were also served without the necessary serving utensils to enjoy the food--e.g., dishes with rich sauces served with only forks and knives, when a serving spoon is required especially when transferring to small plates to serve. If the presentation of the food was more amenable to sharing and the proper utensils were provided, I'd give this restaurant four stars for general quality and five stars compared to other culinary options in our area. read more

I came here as a special treat with my boyfriend and it was absolutely vial. To start off our waiter was extremely rude. He only checked in twice during our meal and refused to listen to any criticism. Our drinks were not what we expected. A "peach" drink ($14) was a shot of whiskey and a giant ice cube. When we expressed discontent with it we were told it was " just how they made them". We weren't even offered anything else. When we ordered our dishes we were pressed, then criticized for only ordering 3 dishes [ turned out to be the only wise choice we made]. All dishes we ordered were extremely salty, covered in sage, and burnt. We barely touched our dishes and the waiter could've cared less. I have no idea what the hype is about this place but I ( friends, family, and anyone else I know) will not be going there. It's not worth the money, time, or the offense on your taste buds. Have been wanting to try this place for a while now, and finally got my chance to eat there for lunch yesterday. Absolutely delicious! I had a "shooter" of the blueberry soup (great option if you, like me, are not a huge fan of cold soups, but want to taste it!) So delicious-not sweet or savory but "blueberry-y"--will get a full serving next time. I also had the "carpaccio" which was their riff on the classic raw beef dish, but with veggies (beet, radish, turnip & apple) instead of meat. Lovely textures and flavors and the sherry vinaigrette was amazing. My friend had the quiche (mushroom that day) and really liked it. We shared 2 outstanding desserts: the berry pavlova and the whipped ricotta with poached Asian pear. One of my pet peeves is when you go out to a great restaurant and the desserts are disappointing...Red Haven is the kind of place where I wanted every dessert on the menu and the 2 we ordered went beyond my wildest expectations! The presentations, especially the pavlova, were gorgeous and the taste surpassed the presentation. Our server was wonderful; she was friendly and gave us great advice about choosing menu items. When she saw me reading the dinner menu on display, she gave me a copy to take home! I will be back here many, many times!! Simply don't have any negative comments for this restaurant. Honestly, I'm surprised by the (negative) reviewers who have complained about the price--you will not get fresh farm-to-table food for "cheap." I thought the prices were quite reasonable--have paid much more for food of far less quality. read more
